MEDPLI Offers “A” Rated Tail Malpractice Insurance for Doctors Losing Coverage Due to American Physicians Partners (APP) Bankruptcy

Without tail malpractice coverage, doctors formerly contracted by American Physicians Partners (APP) can be exposed to an unexpected lawsuit if a former patient files a malpractice claim against them. A MEDPLI advisor can offer physicians affected by the APP bankruptcy multiple options for tail malpractice insurance from “A” rated carriers.

CARBONDALE, Ill., Nov. 30, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — MEDPLI, a leading independent medical malpractice insurance broker, is reaching out to help doctors formerly contracted by American Physicians Partners (APP) to obtain tail malpractice insurance. The Tennessee-based hospital staffing firm announced its closure in July 2023. APP later filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October and plans to liquidate. As a result, APP will no longer honor its contract to provide the firm’s over 2,500 physicians with tail malpractice insurance.

“Without tail malpractice coverage, these 2,500 physicians will be exposed to a lawsuit and risk potentially heavy personal financial loss if a former patient files a malpractice claim against them for an incident that occurred while they were under contract with APP,” says Max Schloemann, CEO of MEDPI. “Our independent MEDPLI advisors have deep experience and knowledge of medical malpractice insurance trends and carriers to help these physicians prepare themselves now for any unexpected prior acts claims with a strong tail coverage policy.”

A medical staffing firm typically provides its newly contracted doctors with medical malpractice insurance, but that coverage ends on the last day of employment, or termination of the doctor’s contract. However, a staffing firm will usually make provisions for a tail policy in the contract terms. But in APP’s bankruptcy’s case, doctors are left scrambling to secure their own tail malpractice insurance to cover them retroactively from their first day of employment with the staffing firm.

MEDPLI’s CEO Max Schloemann also noted that a new employer’s medical malpractice insurance policy will not cover a physician for prior acts that occurred while working for APP. Thus, standalone tail malpractice coverage is the only way to protect against personal financial loss if sued.

“As an independent medical malpractice insurance broker, MEDPLI can offer physicians affected by the American Physicians Partners bankruptcy multiple options for tail malpractice insurance from “A” rated carriers,” Schloemann says. “The volume of medical malpractice lawsuits in the U.S. shows no sign of decreasing, so we encourage physicians to speak with a MEDPLI advisor about securing strong tail malpractice coverage for their specialty as soon as possible.” Not all physicians will qualify for standalone tail coverage.

Physicians who have lost tail malpractice insurance due to the American Physicians Partners bankruptcy can contact a MEDPLI medical malpractice advisor online at www.medpli.com or call 1-800-969-1339 for a quote.

What do Texas Doctors and Nurses Want this Thanksgiving? For You Not to Fill Their Emergency Rooms

SignatureCare Emergency Center’s board-certified emergency medicine physician, Dr. Christopher Langan says there are steps you can take to keep you and your family out of the ER this Thanksgiving.

HOUSTON, Texas, Nov. 16, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Texans, your local emergency room physicians and nurses have one wish this Thanksgiving season – to have you stay safe and healthy, and enjoy the season with your family and friends.

Every Thanksgiving, local emergency rooms throughout Texas see a spike in weather-related injuries and most of those injuries are preventable. These illnesses and injuries can range from frostbites and hypothermia to auto accidents and other injuries.

“Most of these illnesses and injuries are preventable. Taking simple steps can prevent most injuries that we see during this time of the year,” said Dr. Christopher Langan, a board-certified emergency room physician and SignatureCare Emergency Center’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO).

Dr. Langan said SignatureCare is currently not experiencing an upward swing in the number of injuries or illnesses presented in the emergency rooms, but he cautioned that it is still early in the season.

“We have not seen any major changes in the number of weather-related illnesses or injuries in our emergency rooms so far but this is just the beginning of the cold season. As families come together to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas it is important that we exercise caution,” he said.

He advised taking steps to prevent accidents and weather-related injuries, and spreading illnesses like COVID, Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) and the common cold or influenza.

“If you are going to gather together with family and friends this Thanksgiving, doing simple things like masking up while indoors, washing hands frequently and keeping a short distance from others will go a long way towards ensuring everyone in your family enjoys the festivities.

“Another thing to be mindful of is cooking injuries. Burns from overflowing and boiling oil, and extremely hot handles and lids could be severe and require an emergency room visit, so guard against that as well,” he added.

In 2021 when Texas experienced an unprecedented freeze, local emergency rooms were inundated with patients suffering from frostbites, hypothermia and auto accidents. Dr. Langan said one way to prevent auto accidents is not to drive unless you must.

“If you are not on the road, you will not have to worry about getting into auto accidents which could result in head, spine, neck and back injuries. Chest and abdominal injuries can also result from seat belts worn incorrectly – too high on the abdomen instead of across the hips,” Dr. Langan said.

Cold temperatures also lead to falls, especially by the elderly and Dr. Langan said these can be prevented as well.

“A lot of people, especially the elderly, are injured during cold temperatures. These injuries occur when they step outside without realizing that the sidewalks, porches or driveways are covered in ice. They slip and fall causing hip, back, leg and arm fractures, or head and brain injuries. These are all preventable. All we need to do is stay indoors,” he added.

Dr. Langan also advised covering up if you plan to be outside during the cold season.

“We are going to have cold days between now and the end of the year and if you plan to be outside, it is important to be covered to prevent hypothermia, frostbite and other issues. Take steps to protect yourself and your family and you will have a merry and enjoyable holiday season,” he said.

Pre-Thanksgiving Study Exposes Significant Cell Phone Use During Family Mealtimes But Discloses They Are Not Welcome at Holiday Table

The study provides a fresh update on attitudes and behaviors related to cell phone use during mealtimes among American households. It shows a contrast of both positive and concerning information. For example, it verifies that family meals are alive and well in the U.S., with most dinners (64%) eaten together. At the same time, it substantiates that cell phone use during meals has become commonplace, both at home and at restaurants.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the data demonstrates that there is a generational stratification of tolerance of cell phone usage during shared meals in that 58% of Baby Boomers find the behavior to be rude, while only 23% of Gen Z share the sentiment. Males are twice as likely as females to feel that it is fine to use a cell phone during a family meal. In households with children, adults live up to the adage of “do as I say and not as I do” in that 64% of male adults and 52% of female adults use their cell phones during meals versus 39% of kids (13 to 17 years old).

In stark contrast to self-reported behaviors, most households (71% all households / 83% households with kids) do suggest putting phones down when eating at home. And 67% suggest putting phones down during restaurant meals. When it comes to Thanksgiving etiquette, be prepared: 53% of Baby Boomer households warn that cell phones “absolutely will not be allowed at the table;” 41% of Gen X households and 29% of Millennial households are planning to enforce the same rule.

“There is no doubt that Thanksgiving is the poster-child of family meals and all the goodness they impart – emotionally, culturally and physically,” says SupermarketGuru, Phil Lempert, the founder of the #FoodNotPhones initiative. “It also is the ideal meal at which families can make a resolution to put down the cell phones so they can enjoy some undistracted, quality time and appreciate the value of real-world interactions and the joys of savoring food without digital interruptions. In my house this Thanksgiving, we plan to use our phones to take great photos of our family and beautiful food – and then leave the devices in the other room. I encourage others to join me in this challenge. It may just heighten your awareness of how much you have to be thankful for!”

Strategic Radiology Adds 17-Radiologist Skagit Radiology for Foothold in Washington State

Strategic Radiology enters the state of Washington with new member Skagit Radiology, based in Mount Vernon, Wash. The practice includes 17 subspecialty-trained radiologists, covers six hospitals in Washington and Alaska, and has served the region since 1972.

SEATTLE, Nov. 14, 2023 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Strategic Radiology enters the state of Washington with new member Skagit Radiology, based in Mount Vernon, Wash. The practice includes 17 subspecialty-trained radiologists, covers six hospitals in Washington and Alaska, and has served the region since 1972.

“Skagit Radiology has developed a high-service, subspecialized, patient-centered model to meet the needs of patients and partners in the key cities in Skagit County as well as rural communities in the region,” said Scott Bundy, MD, FACR, CEO and Chair, Strategic Radiology (SR). “We are excited to welcome this innovative group into the coalition and introduce them to our unique process of sharing and collaborating.”

In addition to covering hospitals, the practice has a strong outpatient imaging presence in its coverage area, operating two full-service imaging centers and partnering with Skagit Regional Health on a third. Skagit Radiology deployed advanced interoperability technology to connect all sites serviced by its subspecialized team trained in neuroradiology, musculoskeletal, breast, and body imaging, nuclear medicine, and cardiovascular and interventional radiology.

“Our group is a strongly independent, service-minded practice dedicated to providing our patients and partners with excellence in diagnostic and interventional imaging services,” said Kelley L. Cline, MD, president of Skagit Radiology. “We hope to expand best practices, scale business operations, and leverage the group purchasing opportunities through our membership in Strategic Radiology.”

Skagit Radiology is based in Mount Vernon, Washington, the county seat of Skagit County, and adjacent to a vast river delta that stretches west to the Puget Sound. Mountains surround the delta on three sides and support an area of fertile farmland settled by Swedish and Dutch immigrants, whose legacy lives on in the annual Skagit Valley Tulip Festival each spring.
