From left, Yaneth Medina, Jacqueline Ruiz and Maria Castro attend the Today’s Inspired Latina Holiday Party and Awards. Medina and Castro both received the TIL Women of the Year Award for 2020.

“2020 will be the year of the woman, and we all hold the responsibility of lifting up every woman that we can.”

Recognized for their outstanding work in elevating Latinas in the Chicago area, Today’s Inspired Latina (TIL) authors Yaneth Medina and Maria Castro became the recipients of the third annual Today’s Inspired Latina Women of the Year Award for 2020.

Jacqueline Ruiz, creator of the highly successful and empowering TIL book series, presented the prestigious awards to the women during the TIL Annual Holiday Party and Awards Ceremony at the Wintrust Grand Banking Hall in Chicago. The series, which contains six volumes, showcases the poignant collection of 152 inspiring stories from Hispanic female authors all over the world.

The TIL Woman of the Year Award is presented to a contributing author who exemplifies the values of authenticity, passion, and integrity and makes an active impact in the community to elevate fellow Latinas.

Ruiz selected Medina and Castro for their tireless support of promoting the Hispanic community in a positive and uplifting light.

“These women have been instrumental in offering avenues for local Latinas to share their personal stories and missions in life to many audiences,” Ruiz said. “Our stories deserved to be heard by everyone so they understand the Hispanic community’s positive contributions on local, regional and national levels.”

Medina, a Vol. II author, is the senior vice president and head of retail banking for Schaumburg Bank & Trust and St. Charles Bank & Trust, Wintrust Community Banks. For five consecutive years, Wintrust hosted free special monthly networking events presenting TIL throughout its suburban locations.

“To be chosen as a 2020 TIL of the year, is such an honor and blessing for me! I’ve been fortunate to have witnessed the magic from the launch of Vol. I, five years ago,” she said. “ At that event, I thought to myself… ‘What a beautiful way to exhibit people’s successes in life!’ One year later, I was one of those authors who shared her story. Shortly afterwards we began the Wintrust and TIL partnership. Our mission is to continue to impact our communities and elevate others by sharing stories of the TIL authors. I am excited to see the fruitful happenings for 2020 and most importantly, I am ready to continue to spread the magic and make a difference!”

Castro, a Vol. V author, is the regional external affairs manager at Comcast in the Greater Chicago Region. She was chosen for her dedication, commitment and ongoing volunteer work with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and Telemundo Chicago’s Action Board.

“The work that has to be done in our communities is endless, and to those who much is given much is expected,” Castro said. “I’m up for the challenge.”

In accepting her award, Castro stated that she will continue to support all women through her philanthropic and work endeavors.

“2020 will be the year of the woman, and we all hold the responsibility of lifting up every woman that we can,” she said.

Today’s Inspired Latina Releases Today’s Inspired Young Latina In National Book Launch

News Image

Several young Hispanic women celebrate their becoming first-time authors with TIL creator Jacqueline S. Ruiz at the book launch of “Today’s Inspired Young Latina.”

“When I was in high school, there was very little representation of Latino authorship. There were very few stories that I could identify with or relate to culturally. These ladies are changing that narrative and unleashing the endless possibilities for their generation.”

Several young Hispanic women showcased their gratitude and joy as proud first-time authors as they and Jacqueline S. Ruiz, the creator of the international Today’s Inspired Latina (TIL) book series, launched the book debut of “Today’s Inspired Young Latina” in front of friends and family.

The festive event recently took place at J. C. Restoration, a premier Hispanic-owned restoration company in Rolling Meadows. Written by Ruiz and Alexandria Rios Taylor with a preface by acclaimed Hispanic actor Edward James Olmos, the book details stories of young Latinas overcoming obstacles and creating their own opportunities, as they become part of a dynamic and inspirational generation in American society.

“Today is another amazing representation of what it means to believe in a dream that is bigger than all of us,” said Ruiz, one of the book’s co-authors. “And today we have the privilege of elevating 14 young Latinas that reached out to us. They believe in something. They wowed us with their presentations that captivated our hearts and minds.”

The contributing authors in the book are: Evelyn Lozano, Alondra Ivette Guevara, Arianna Urrutia, Gina Aridal Pardino, Giselle Gonzalez, Andrea Vallejo, Samantha Ante, Maria Clara Ospina, Daniela Limon, Yahayra Argueta, Erica Franco, Gabrielle Hernández Franch, Evelyn Lonzano, Scarlett Magaña-Singh.

Ruiz explained that the idea about getting young Latinas to share their stories came from TIL author Elizabeth Colón-Rivera. From then the seed was planted to premiere the first ever Young LATINATalks at Naperville’s North Central College in September. A natural extension was to then capture these stories in an anthology book.

Hernández Franch, one of the book’s authors, wrote about her initial dreams of becoming a doctor. Life and God had other plans for her. Becoming a contributor was as an amazing journey for her.

“People say that there are three things that change your life,” she said. “It’s the people you meet, the events you attend and the books that you’ve read have the power to change your life. And I’m here at this stage, at this incredible event with the right people holding the right book.”

Taylor, also the dean of students at Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, would have appreciated a book like this when she was a teenager. Unfortunately, there were not many inspirational stories to find. She hopes that will change with this new book.

“When I was in high school, there was very little representation of Latino authorship,” she said. “There were very few stories that I could identify with or relate to culturally. These ladies are changing that narrative and unleashing the endless possibilities for their generation.”

Today’s Young Inspired Latina is available on Amazon for $14.97.

Pastor MacDonald Apreku’s newly released “The Verdict of Decisions” is an enthralling book that helps the readers make a positive decision in any circumstance

News Image

“The Verdict of Decisions”: an engrossing book that explains to the readers the importance of decision making as a constant requirement in every situation in life. “The Verdict of Decisions” is the creation of published author Pastor MacDonald Apreku, the pastor of New Dimension Christian Center who has written many pamphlets and books and has mentored a lot of people into great and successful ministries. He is a very seasoned speaker who coaches and speaks broadly in seminars.

Pastor Apreku writes, “Every life has a beginning. Your life began when two people a man and a woman or one of these two decided to cause an action. That act could be a well-thought-through event or a random one, by consensus addendum, or otherwise. What is certain is that either one or both parties made a decision, whether it was a good one or not, one thing is indisputably certain; you are a product of decision.

“Decisions are a constant requirement, without which nothing can happen. However, decisions making is just the beginning of big things you will encounter. May it be known when you make a decision; you are just stepping into the unpredictable waters that lead to unprecedented ends. These ends nonetheless may vary due to certain factors. When you were born, you were born into a complex school—the world. You are not the victim of the school; instead, it is your decisions that make you a winner or a loser or yet still a victim. In the world of decisions, the only promising school principal is wisdom. In all your getting, get understanding and be cautiously guided by wisdom.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Pastor Apreku’s new book leaves a wonderful reading experience to the readers as this self-help book allows them to get to know how decision making works and how to decide with a positive outcome.

This book provides the readers with an example of how decisions affects one’s life and why decision making is considered to be the constant requirement of every single step that everyone takes in their daily lives.

Five Predictions For Divorce In 2020 By Matrimonial Law Attorney Jacqueline Newman

Divorce rates will be effected by the presidential race.

How will divorce change across America in the coming year? Jacqueline Newman (https://nycdivorcelawyer.com) , a managing partner at Berkman Bottger Newman & Schein LLP and author of the new book “The New Rules Of Divorce: 12 Secrets to Protecting Your Wealth, Health, and Happiness,” has revealed her top five predictions for divorce in 2020. They include:

Divorce rates will be effected by the presidential race.

There have already been studies released that the divisive political climate has caused great stress and anxiety for many people in America. Therefore it is logical to extrapolate that this emotional stress has trickled into people’s personal lives, in particular their marriages. The heat is going to rise come November and it will definitely impact marriages and may push those already on the edge – over the cliff.

If the real estate market continues to be soft (especially in the high end market), it may lower divorce rates.

It is common sense that it costs more to have two houses than one. This rings especially true when your largest asset (your home) has dropped in value and you cannot sell it for a price that allows you to afford two homes. There will be people who will table any divorce talks until they regain the value in their homes and feel that they can sell. A soft real estate market can make a spouse seem less annoying to live with.

The number of couples entering into Prenuptial agreements will continue to rise.

While prenupts use to only be only reserved for the rich, that no longer seems to be the case. Now, you still have wealthy people entering into these agreements, you also have people who plan to be rich one day, entering into the agreements. Much of the stigma of having a prenupt seems to have dissipated while also strengthens their popularity. I see more people entering into them in 2020 and beyond.

The movement towards 50/50 custody will continue to grow

Gone are the days of the “every other weekend and Wednesday dinner” Dads. More and more I see that parents are agreeing to 50/50 parenting access time with their children. With more households have two working parents, the parenting responsibilities are being divided more than they ever have before. The involvement of both parents is strongly supported by the courts and it is slowly becoming the burden of the parent who does not believe 50/50 is appropriate to prove why.

Litigation over spousal support awards will increase

When the tax laws changed and spousal support was no longer fully tax deductible to the payor and income to the payee, it had a significant impact on divorce negotiations. Although the tax laws changed, the formula that calculates spousal support did not which results in very skewed spousal support calculations. This has led to fights amongst attorneys as to whether the formula should apply at all. Combine the faulty formula with the overall movement against larger spousal support awards for parents who have stepped out of the workforce to raise children is a recipe for a lot of litigation.

On National Rural Health Day, University of Maryland Extension Reports a High-Impact Year Related to Farm Stress Management Education

University of Maryland Extension is promoting rural health through farm stress management workshops across Maryland.

As educators, our goals are to raise awareness and build educational resources for communities struggling with mental and behavioral health problems.

In early 2018, national reports from USDA, private industry and farm organizations began talking about another “farm crisis.” USDA Economic Research Service forecasted a decrease in farm income that would be the lowest level in nominal terms since 2006. Weather, prices and international trade have created a volatile, unprofitable and uncertain time for production agriculture. It became clear that this was an issue in the northeast, including Maryland. As a response, UMD Extension (UME) agents initiated partnerships and programs including a dedicated farm stress management website, a farm vitality forum bringing together multiple agencies to discuss rural mental health and collaboration, and most recently partnered with the Maryland Association of Soil Conservation Districts to provide four farm stress management workshops around the state targeting farmers and service providers.

During UME winter agriculture production meetings 517 attendees representing 22 of Maryland’s 24 counties were surveyed regarding their stress level. Of those attending, 62% were farmers, and 20% were landowners. Using a scale from 1 to 10, attendees were asked to rate their level of stress in the past month. Forty-two percent rated their stress level as 6 or more; 26% rated their stress level as an 8, 9 or 10. When asked to rate their current level of stress, 43% rated their stress as slightly, or much higher than the last year. And when asked what factors contributed most to their stress, 91% said finances and 90% said regulations.

In January 2019, UME funded five educators to attend the Farm Stress Management Summit hosted by Michigan State University. The educators were trained to facilitate “Communicating with Farmers under Stress,” “Weathering the Storm in Agriculture: How to Cultivate a Productive Mindset,” and completed eight hours of Mental Health First Aid training. Using the information and skills gained, UME conducted four meetings around the state targeting farmers and service providers. These sessions were attended by 82 participants and received positive feedback with requests for additional resources and training.

“As educators, our goals are to raise awareness and build educational resources for communities struggling with mental and behavioral health problems,” explains Shannon Dill, Principal Agent for UME. “There is a social stigma associated with mental health. We aim to break that down by encouraging conversation and connections, with the ultimate goal of increased well-being, profitability, and business sustainability for Maryland farm families.”

With respect to the impact of stress on our bodies, 86% said they gained “a lot” or “quite a bit” from the workshop. In terms of resources to refer people to for help, 82% of attendees said they gained “a lot” or “quite a bit.” On the topic of identifying signs and symptoms of stress, 79% said they learned “a lot” or “quite a bit.”

Several participants also recorded direct quotes on various aspects of the training, ranging from praise, “I have a better understanding of the physiological effects of stress and how that triggers the emotional response,” to suggestions for the future, “I would encourage you to collaborate with the health insurance extension program, because lack of health insurance that covers mental health care is a big barrier to getting professional help.”

“We are energized by the resources we’ve been able to offer in 2019, and are encouraged by a lot of the direct feedback we’ve received from participants,” said Dill. “Looking towards the future, we are committed to supplementing what we’ve already laid in place to ensure our farmers and farm families have the resources to stay physically and mentally healthy.”

USPS Operation Santa putting needy kids’ sad letters to Santa online for “adoption” by volunteers at Christmas

USPS Operation Santa Christmas volunteers mail gifts delivered directly to children.

This little girl wrote to Santa and her gifts were delivered directly to her!

“Some Operation Santa volunteers feel alone and sad over the holidays, and find comfort and inspiration volunteering for this program. People catch the true spirit of the holidays and put smiles on the faces of needy kids on Christmas morning,” says Be A Elf’s Chief Elf, Patrick Reynolds.

The U.S. Postal Service launched a new website this week that makes letters to Santa from needy kids available to members of the public to adopt.

Many of their letters ask Santa only for “a warm coat”, “new shoes,” and a favorite toy, according to a nonprofit that supports the effort.

In recent years the program has been available in under two dozen cities, but this year, the letters may be adopted in every U.S. city, thanks to a new USPS website, USPSoperationsanta.com.

Volunteers may also read letters in person at one branch in Chicago, and another in New York City. To protect children’s privacy, USPS staff redact last names and addresses from every letter. Gifts must be mailed by Dec. 20th, in time for delivery by Christmas.

The U.S. Postal Service has made the children’s letters available every December since 1912. It has been supported by Be An Elf, a tax-exempt charity founded by a volunteer, Elf Patrick. The site supports USPS Operation Santa by recruiting hundreds of new volunteers every year, encouraging media to cover the story, and by supporting those seeking assistance by offering them letter-writing tips. Be An Elf is not affiliated with the USPS, but its website serves as a guide both to volunteering for the program and for those seeking assistance. The group gets a major in-kind grant from Google in the form of free advertising.

Parents who are worried there won’t be enough gifts for their children this year will find great tips at BeAnElf.org/writing-to-Santa. Volunteers who want to learn more should start with the home page at BeAnElf.org

“Some Operation Santa volunteers feel alone and sad over the holidays, and find comfort and inspiration volunteering for this program. People catch the true spirit of the holidays and put smiles on the faces of needy kids on Christmas morning,” says Be A Elf’s Patrick Reynolds, who has the title of Chief Elf. He’s a grandson of tobacco company founder R.J. Reynolds but became a smoke-free advocate after his father, R.J. Reynolds Jr., died from smoking. Patrick Reynolds received the Lifetime Achievement award in 2015 from President Obama for his work against Big Tobacco.
