Martin Searle Solicitors launch their new campaign “Menopause Matters” in January 2024 to stamp out Menopause Discrimination in the Workplace

Although the menopause is not specifically identified as a type of discrimination under the Equality Act, the Employment Law Team at Martin Searle Solicitors are seeing a number of employees with menopausal symptoms experiencing disability discrimination, age discrimination and / or sex discrimination at work.

Many workplaces do not adequately support their staff who are going through the menopause. A 2022 report by the Fawcett Society reported that 80% of women said that their employer did not have a menopause policy in place or offered any training to staff around the menopause. Sadly, one in ten menopausal women have left their job due to their symptoms.

Fiona Martin, Director and Head of Employment Law at Martin Searle Solicitors, said “We have spoken to many employees who believe they have been unfairly selected for redundancy or discriminated against because they are going through the menopause. We are a campaigning law firm who educate employers to be supportive and to follow best practice on this issue. We also support employees who are being discriminated against. We want to make menopause discrimination a thing of the past and encourage employers to be aware of the issues and to make reasonable adjustments where necessary.”

Their campaign includes a free virtual seminar for employee advisers and trade union representatives on Menopause Discrimination At Work on Thursday 25 January 2024, and a virtual seminar for charities and non-profit organisations on Menopause Discrimination – Best Practice for Employers on Tuesday 30 January 2024. They are also providing a free menopause policy for organisations.

Martin Searle Solicitors Employment Law Team are also providing a free 30 minute confidential advice line for employers, employees and workers on the rights of staff going through the menopause and employer duties to support employees and workers. Employers, employees and workers can call 01273 609911 from 3.30pm – 5.30pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout January 2024.

Maximizing efficiency and safety with infrared inspections

Infrared inspections, also known as thermographic inspections, are non-invasive diagnostic tools that employ thermal imaging to identify anomalies in electrical systems. The key benefit of this technique is its ability to detect hot spots, which can indicate overloaded circuits, loose connections, or faulty components. These hot spots often precede more significant problems, such as electrical fires, which makes their early identification crucial for safety and cost-effectiveness.

Hot spots are the silent threats that occur when electrical connections become loose, causing resistance in the circuit. As current flows through the area of resistance, it generates heat. Over time, this localized heating can escalate, ultimately leading to catastrophic failures. The problem is that hot spots are often invisible to the naked eye, and traditional inspections might not identify them until it’s too late.

Infrared scanning, in the context of panels and equipment, is a proactive approach to identifying these hot spots. Here’s how it works:

  • Prior to the inspection, the equipment must be in a stable and steady-state operation. This ensures that any potential issues are more likely to be detected.
  • Thermal imaging: A certified electrician uses an infrared camera to capture images of the equipment and panels. These images display temperature variations, with hot spots appearing as bright areas in the image. The San Luis Obispo electrical contractors are certified and well-experienced for infrared inspections and troubleshooting.
  • Analysis: The electrician analyzes the images, identifying areas with abnormal temperatures. Any hot spots found are then documented and assessed for severity.
  • Recommendations: Based on the findings, recommendations are made for addressing the issues. This could involve tightening loose connections, replacing faulty components, or adjusting the load distribution.

While infrared inspections are a powerful tool, inspections should also include routine visual inspections. Regular visual inspections can catch obvious issues like damaged cables, visible corrosion, or physical damage. They also include cleaning panels and equipment, which play a pivotal role in preventing problems.

Dust, dirt, and debris accumulation on panels and equipment can lead to various issues, including:

  • Heat retention: Dust acts as an insulator, trapping heat within the equipment and panels. This, in turn, can lead to increased operating temperatures and potential hot spots.
  • Corrosion: Dust and dirt can also contain corrosive particles that may gradually deteriorate the equipment’s components over time.
  • Reduced efficiency: When components are covered in dust, their cooling mechanisms become less effective, reducing overall system efficiency.
  • Safety hazards: In extreme cases, dust accumulation can even become a fire hazard.

Best practices for panel and equipment cleaning include:

  • Scheduled maintenance: Implement a regular cleaning schedule for panels and equipment. The frequency of cleaning should be determined based on the operating environment, with more frequent cleaning required in dusty or harsh conditions.
  • Use proper tools: Ensure that cleaning is carried out with appropriate tools and methods to avoid causing any damage to sensitive components.
  • Safety first: Always prioritize safety when cleaning equipment, disconnecting power sources if necessary, and following established safety protocols.

Commercial and industrial infrared inspections, including scanning panels for hot spots, are indispensable for maintaining safety and efficiency in electrical systems. By identifying issues before they escalate into catastrophic failures, businesses can save both time and money, while also ensuring the well-being of their employees.

The San Luis Obispo electrical contracting team from Electricraft has been performing commercial and industrial inspections since the company was founded in 1984. American Board of Obesity Medicine announces more than 1,500 new diplomates as demand for better training and evidence-based obesity management grows

The 1,539 new Diplomates who passed the most recent exam join the 955 ABOM Diplomates who earned first-time board certification status in January 2023. Overall, the total number of obesity medicine physicians grew by 40 percent from 2022 to 2023.

Year    Number of ABOM Diplomates
2023*    8,263
2022    5,881
2021    5,242
2020    4,102
2019    3,377
2018    2,656
*Includes both classes of ABOM Diplomates announced in January 2023 and December 2023.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, obesity affects over 40 percent of U.S. adults and increases the risks for heart disease, cancer, diabetes, stroke, and musculoskeletal problems. Obesity has been officially recognized as a disease by the American Medical Association since 2013, and many doctors want to help patients lose weight and improve health. However, physicians often graduate from medical school and residency programs with little or no training in weight management and nutrition – they are unfamiliar with treatment guidelines and have low confidence in their ability to treat obesity.

“The growth of obesity medicine board certification mirrors the rise in interest among physicians seeking a more evidence-based approach to treating patients with obesity,” said Dr. Judith Korner, MD PhD, Chair of the ABOM Board of Directors.

According to Dr. Kimberly Gudzune, MD MPH, ABOM Medical Director, board certification sends a strong signal to both patients and referring physicians that the Diplomate is prepared to partner with patients in addressing the complex challenges that obesity presents.
Dr. Gudzune also noted that new anti-obesity medications can demand an enhanced level of sophistication and training.

“In the past, many doctors prioritized treating the problems caused by obesity rather than the disease itself. This attitude may stem, in part, from pessimism toward the effectiveness of older treatment options. Now with the advent of highly effective anti-obesity medications, doctors are seeking certification to understand how to use these new tools,” said Dr. Gudzune. “Through the certification process, they also learn the complexity of the disease of obesity as well as comprehensive strategies for treatment.”

ABOM Diplomates come from a wide spectrum of medical disciplines and specialties with primary care physicians comprising the largest number of Diplomates, said Dr. Korner.

“The strong showing from the primary care community is promising because primary care physicians are often in the best position to treat obesity,” Dr. Korner said.

The 1,539 new Diplomates who passed the most recent ABOM certification exam include internists (561), family physicians (462), pediatricians/pediatric subspecialists (106), endocrinologists (75), surgeons (69), obstetricians/gynecologists (44), and gastroenterologists (39), along with numerous other specialists.

Certification as an ABOM Diplomate signifies specialized knowledge in the practice of obesity medicine and distinguishes a physician as having achieved competency in obesity care, with ABOM Diplomates incorporating obesity medicine into their everyday practices or devoting themselves full time to the treatment of obesity. The number of first-time ABOM certificates issued annually now exceeds those of other fields such as cardiology, pulmonary disease, and medical oncology.

The next obesity medicine certification exam will be administered October 14-26, 2024.

About the American Board of Obesity Medicine
The American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM) serves the public and the field of obesity medicine by maintaining standards for assessment and credentialing physicians. AMC’s Health & Wellness Expo Offers Myriad Benefits to Employees

“We’re very proud of the way our Health & Wellness Expo has expanded through the years to offer increasingly more benefits to our employees,” said Danielle Holloway McCarthy, AMC President. “AMC is built on a family atmosphere, and the overall health of our employees is a primary concern of ours and something we take seriously. We’re thankful to provide a day to bring all the employees together to help them become more educated about their individual health.”

The expo has literally been a life-saving event for some employees. Nikki Lizardi, AMC’s Director of Human Resources, has directed the expo since its inception in 2000. She’s seen expo insights convince countless employees to make positive lifestyle changes when it comes to health and even knows of a few instances where testing at the event essentially saved employees’ lives by alerting them to immediately dangerous health conditions.

“We have saved a couple lives, and there’s all kinds of stories about important individual health discoveries over the years,” Lizardi said. “I really feel like this is such a good thing we do. Even if it’s just one person a year that we affect — if we alter their future, healthwise, in a positive way, then that’s a great outcome. There’s a lot of smaller impacts that happen as well. Any impact is beneficial.”

Employees check in at 8:30 a.m. the morning of the expo and pick up swag bags of information, schedules and other goodies, as well as a new matching company shirt, which they all change into for the duration of the day’s events. There is some required training depending on each employee’s position, but then everyone is free to participate in a variety of health-related amenities.

Healthcare services provided at this year’s event included the following:

  • Cholesterol, glucose and body weight checks.
  • Bone density scan.
  • BMI checkup.
  • Posture screening.
  • Vision checkup.
  • Hearing checkup.
  • Dental information.
  • Chiropractor checkup.
  • Hairstyling, including men’s facial hair.
  • Eyelash and eyebrow care.
  • Dermatology assessment.
  • Flu shots.

One popular location was the Zen Tent, where a dozen masseuses provided stress-free chair massages. Other Zen offerings included reflexology tests, therapy dogs, yoga therapy and eco-friendly crafts. Additional tents were set up for power tool demonstrations, company benefits and career track training, professional headshots and a selfie station, and 14 vendors were onsite for early holiday shopping opportunities.

Lizardi said AMC supplies employees with $200 worth of work shoes, boots and insoles every other year. So there were two trucks filled with approved job site shoes for employees to pour their soles into.

“It’s a whole big production out there,” Lizardi said. “They put all the shoes on display like they’re going to a shoe store, and they lined everything up so it looks really nice. We had people there helping them try the shoes on. If they wanted more shoes than what the company provides, we offered them an employee payroll deduction instead of charging it out of pocket. We tried to make everything as affordable as possible.”

The event is held outdoors to take advantage of the beautiful Southern California weather in November and to help promote an overall healthy vibe. Eco-friendly ideals are a huge part of the planning, with most lunch materials being compostable or recyclable.

Looking back, Lizardi said the growth of the expo — which featured more than 100 volunteers this year — has been gradual, becoming a little more “ginormous” as the years go by.

“It’s just kind of evolved each year, and we’ve made it a little more fun, a little more interesting and a little more educational,” Lizardi said, noting that she really starts digging into the planning each year around April. “It’s a really fun event that’s dear to my heart because I’ve put decades of energy into it. It’s not just hearing, and it’s not just vision. It’s really for an employee’s overall well-being. It’s kind of like A to Z for everything you could possibly do healthwise in a group setting, minus any private things.”
