Hope Builders Launches Another Innovative Virtual Fundraiser

Shawna Smith, CEO of Hope Builders, says, “Our annual fundraiser has always focused on celebrating our students and the community who serves them, using innovative ideas. The financial support is secondary but continues to surprise us with incredible results.”

In the summer of 2020, Hope Builders made the decision to cancel its annual in-person Fall gala. For years it had brought hundreds of supporters together for one big night of food, fun, and fundraising. But, like most other significant gathering events at the time, it was the appropriate choice.

In its place, Hope Builders launched an online fundraiser that ultimately produced more support for the organization than any prior in-person event. The following year, 2021, continued with a virtual event that delivered equally impressive results. The Orange County Business Journal included both of these Hope Builders fundraisers as one of the Top Five Unique Virtual Fundraisers.

But these weren’t typical online fundraisers. Each included unique experiences that align with the innovative non-profit business model that Hope Builders is known for. No philanthropic organization has anything like Hope Builders process. Nor have they tried to succeed with online fundraisers as unique as these. And this year’s event will be no different.

2022 Event Theme: 10 Days for Launching Careers

Hope Builders’ 2022 virtual fundraising event theme is “10 Days for Launching Careers” and will run from August 27th to Labor Day, September 5th.

As a non-profit that is laser-focused on putting young adults into careers they might not gain access to otherwise, Hope Builders hears many stories from their graduates about their “first day of work.” Some are scary, some are funny, and some are downright crazy. But each is inspiring in its own way and offers encouragement to other Hope Builders students as they prepare to launch their careers. Because of these many stories, Hope Builders decided to build this year’s event around sharing “first day of work” moments. Not just from the program graduates but also their mentors, donors, and community supporters. Learn more at tsjhopebuilders.org/fundraiser.

These User Generated Content (UGC) videos will be shared via Social Media and email. Each one to two-minute story is self-recorded via the user’s smartphone and then shared with Hope Builders via text, who uploads it to their Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn pages. The personal recording ends with an invitation to a colleague, friend, or family member to share their “first day of work” story. Hope Builders will ensure the invitation is shared and seen.

The purpose of these videos is three-fold:

  • Generate brand and campaign awareness
  • Offer stories of hope from all walks of life
  • Encourage financial support for Hope Builders trainees

Aside from this being a fundraising event, Hope Builders wants to build a library of hopeful, fun, supportive messages that brings everyone together on a level playing field. Hope Builders’ goal is to post a wide variety of “first day of work” stories shared by students, graduates, mentors, sponsors, and community supporters. From CEOs of large corporations to night shift workers at McDonald’s, everyone’s “First day of work” is a story worth sharing. You can see a few here.

Shawna Smith, CEO of Hope Builders, says, “Our annual fundraiser has always focused on celebrating our students and the community who serves them, using innovative ideas. The financial support is secondary but continues to surprise us with incredible results.”

‘Mindful in 5’ can help busy Americans address anxiety epidemic

News Image

Spiwe Jefferson, CMP, JD, had a revelation while writing “Mindful in 5,” her first in the book series. Millions of adult Americans are stressed. Anxiety-based disorders are now the most common mental health concern in the United States.* What if there was a way to help busy, anxious professionals reduce stress, unlock their inner strength, and overcome the challenges of daily life with deeper calm and equanimity?

“We have collectively experienced unprecedented stressors, including the global pandemic, war, and worsening climate conditions. In the explosion of fear, stress, and loneliness, many people are searching for healthy, cost-effective solutions that will help them survive and thrive in a complex, interconnected world,” Jefferson says.

Relatable, captivating characters, insightful stories, and journal reflections guide those desiring a better life to be consistently present and realize inner peace even during challenging times, starting with just five minutes a day.

In her own quest to attain the benefits of mindfulness, most books that Jefferson found offered an abstract exploration of the subject. She wrote “Mindful in 5: Meditations for People with No Time” (published by Archway Publishing) as an example-based, step-by-step roadmap that empowers readers to translate mindfulness meditation concepts into action that will help them reduce stress, build optimism, and improve overall well-being.

Based on scientifically proven techniques,** “Mindful in 5” utilizes three distinct “seasons” — Dawn, Day, and Dark — that meet readers where they are. They can progress by deep reflection, emerging into reframed perspectives.

When asked what she wants readers to take away from the book, Jefferson said, “Mindfulness meditation won’t solve your problems. But with consistent practice, anyone can master it to improve their general outlook and overall quality of life. Set your intention to live and work to your highest and best purpose, starting with just five minutes a day.” For more details about the book, please visit https://www.archwaypublishing.com/en/bookstore/bookdetails/836681-mindful-in-5

At Work On Purpose’s Global XL Summit Takes Aim at ‘Isms’

Chuck Proudfit, AWOP Founder and President, speaks at the summit. AWOP is advancing citywide workplace ministry across the world, serving working Christians, local churches, and ministry networks.

“Our society is in upheaval from health anxiety, economic disruption, social unrest, and political polarization. The Church in the working world can make a huge difference in addressing the intractable challenges,” said Chuck Proudfit, AWOP Founder and President.

Christian leaders from around the world connected with community peers and tapped into the theme of bringing heaven to earth at the 2022 XL Summit hosted by At Work On Purpose (AWOP).

More than 200 Christian workplace leaders attended this year’s summit, held on July 15 at Grace Chapel in Mason, Ohio. Attendees from around the globe also participated in the XL experience online.

“This year’s faith-at-work focus was on how to ‘bring heaven to Earth’ through the unique vocational contributions of everyday work. Together, we explored how to become ‘more than conquerors’ (Romans 8:37) as we confront the many ‘isms’ that get in the way of God’s Kingdom – the world as it should be rather than the world as it is,” said Chuck Proudfit, AWOP Founder and President.

The day-long summit included engaging presentations, insightful interviews, and interactive discussion focused on what it would look like for the Church at work to bring redemption to a society flooded with anxiety, discouragement, volatility, unrest, and polarization. “We seek to heal the ‘isms’ which create schisms in the Church and in the world at large,” explained Proudfit at the start of the summit.

The first panel interview focused on addressing racism, featuring Orlando Hale of the National Network of Youth Ministries; Walt Tracy, CEO and Co-Founder of UrbanNext; and Daniel Rumley, VP of Campus Development for UrbanNext. Hale shared the challenges of securing funding for his youth ministry, with black ministers statistically far less funded than white ministers, and how the Church can “even the scales.” Tracy and Rumley shared how their private school for disadvantaged minority students is bringing their black educational achievement outcomes closer to those of Caucasian children.

The second panel, focused on improving gender equality, featured Jane Doerman of Church Relations with Women in the Marketplace, and Teresa Tanner, Founder and CEO of the Reserve Squad. Doerman and Tanner shared actionable ways attendees could empower women in the marketplace with a focal point on leadership development and more empathy towards our female leader’s family needs.

The next discussion examined elitism, with panelists including Dr. Rob Hall, President of Trauma Free World and Mike Henry, Founder and CEO for Follower of One. Hall and Henry shared how marketplace mobilization efforts are often geared toward organizational leaders, yet the greater opportunity is to steward the right resources to reach each person in the marketplace.

Both Trauma Free World and Follower of One have developed platforms to equip those integrating their faith at work, regardless of their title. Hall and Henry explained how these platforms are accessible and have a low barrier to entry, allowing everyone to become involved—not just those in leadership. In hearing about both ministries, attendees learned common denominators to having a greater impact when integrating their faith at work.

In addition, a panel interview addressing ageism featured Spencer Hogan, Director of Young Professionals AWOP; Dana Dunmyer, President of TQI Solutions; and John Davis, VP of Human Resources at Cedarville University. All three panelists provided a series of practical solutions for multiple generations in the workplace learning how to bring the best out of each other, rather than simply clashing with each other.

In the second half of the summit, Karla Blair and Chris Batty of General Electric (GE) shared how they are working with colleagues to establish an Employee Resource Group at GE. Designed in alignment with the company’s human resources requirements, this breakthrough initiative allows Christian employees at GE to be faith expressive. Blair, Batty, and their Christian teammates were awarded the Transformation Trailblazers commendation by AWOP for 2022.

The last two sessions uncovered ways that God is leveraging marketplace resources for Kingdom impact.

Chris Beard, Lead Pastor of Peoples Church, spoke with Proudfit about the art of leveraging the resources of national and international ministries without losing the local context of cities; Nathan Smith of Glenmary Home Missioners shared how he is using small group discipleship in the marketplace to bridge denominational differences between Catholics and Protestants; and Chuck Peckham of Compassionate Justice spoke about the need to customize city transformation one neighborhood at a time.

Additionally, Steve Chua of InsightOut described how this innovative firm is harnessing Christians in consulting, coaching, and training for solving business problems in companies worldwide; Bob Seymore of The Global Leadership Network shared about a citywide pilot underway in Cincinnati, where revenues from their annual leadership summit will support local ministries in the Greater Cincinnati area; and Mike Larkin of the Great Awakening Project shared updates on how this ministry network is organizing Christians for faith expression across every channel of cultural influence.

Each year at the XL Summit, attendees are inspired to spur change in the workplace and in their everyday lives—and this year was no different. Explained Proudfit, “Our society is in upheaval from health anxiety, economic disruption, social unrest and political polarization. The Church in the working world can make a huge difference in addressing the intractable challenges.”

“A Journey to Me: A 40 Day Devotional to Help You Reset, Reflect, Reevaluate, and Reapproach Life”: a potent reminder of God’s devotion and continued acceptance of those who seek Him. “A Journey to Me: A 40 Day Devotional to Help You Reset, Reflect, Reevaluate, and Reapproach Life” is the creation of published author Clenesha C. Richard, a loving mother and resident of Texas.

Richard shares, “Life is a journey. There have been plenty of times in our own lives where we have felt the need to give up because we have nothing pushing us to continue. Closest friends and family may have turned their backs on us, but there is one person who never leaves us nor forsakes us—his name is Jesus Christ.

“Sometimes in life, we tend to miss out on things because of our views and attitudes. We tend to lose focus, take missteps, lose sight of the vision, and we need something to help us get back on the straight and narrow path.

“As you read this book, you will receive some insights on some things that I encountered along my own journey.

“In this book, you will receive the chance to read my personal testimonies, scriptures that I meditated on, and some questions that I asked myself along the way. You, too, will have the same opportunities to not only answer those questions but to write them down so that one day, you can refer back to them.

Harold Davis’s newly released “Walking Past the Porter” is a thought-provoking discussion of faith and understanding God’s promptings.

News Image

“Walking Past the Porter”: a potent discussion of one’s connection with the Holy Spirit. “Walking Past the Porter” is the creation of published author Harold Davis, who grew up on a small farm in Northern California in a strict Christian faith. Davis graduated from Willows High School in 1968, moved to Kansas, and married in 1970. He has been married for fifty years and has raised three sons.

Davis shares, “These inspirations came over a period of forty years, and I kept writing them down. Walking past the porter, which is the Holy Spirit, is ignoring the Lord and his gentle promptings. God will not force anyone; we all have free choice. The Lord said, ‘If my people will humble themselves and come back to me, I will heal their land.’ People need to come back to the Lord. The answers to this nation’s and everyone’s problems are really very simple.

“The chapters and titles depict some of man’s basic lust, sins, and nature that we must see and repent of.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Harold Davis’s new book will challenge and encourage readers to consider the author’s message of the need to be aware of one’s path.

Davis’s thoughtful reflections and encouraging tone will draw readers in as they take time for personal and spiritual reflection while considering the articulate points made within.

Consumers can purchase “Walking Past the Porter” at traditional brick & mortar bookstores, or online at Amazon.com, Apple iTunes store, or Barnes and Noble.

New Leadership Book Helps to Deliver Bad News, Strengthen Faith and Pay Attention to What Matters in Life

“Turning tragedy into triumph often means confronting bad news head-on”, says Carter. “delivering bad news will test any leader’s mettle, from telling stakeholders that revenues are down to informing your team about layoffs.”

What are powerful leadership traits that can result from tragedy? How great leaders deliver bad news?

“This book will confidently put you on the road to becoming a great leader, and the leadership lessons offered will help you expand your influence, strengthen your faith, build strong relationships and find your authentic self,” says Dr. Rob Carter III, author of the leadership books, A Man Named Robert: Lessons from the Life of America’s First Great Emancipator and The Morning Mind: Use Your Brain to Master Your Day and Supercharge Your Life. (source: themorningmind.com)

“Tragedy molds leaders,” says Carter “weathering difficult times can transform a leader’s character by developing key characteristics.

3 Ways to Overcome Challenging Barriers and Pay More Attention to What Matters in Life

1. Humility. “Overcoming hardship makes a leader see the triviality of always being right and proving a point,” says Carter, “they are open to feedback and honest criticism from peers and subordinates alike and are willing to consider it seriously.” “At the same time, they’re also teaching their team a great lesson about the power of humility and cooperation where everyone is heard and appreciated,” says Carter

2. Truthfulness. “Overcoming loss allows leaders to show vulnerability and be more open with their emotions,” says Carter “they set an excellent example for their people to interact with openness and honesty, which avoids the building up of grudges and other toxic feelings and emotions.”

3. Authenticity. “Trauma and tragedy make a great leader realize that pretense and fakeness aren’t worth the time and effort,” says Carter, “they have learned to live with themselves and expect others to accept them as they are.”

“Turning tragedy into triumph often means confronting bad news head-on,” says Carter. “delivering bad news will test any leader’s mettle, from telling stakeholders that revenues are down to informing your team about layoffs.”

Dr. Robert Carter III is a Colonel in the United States Army and the bestselling author of The Morning Mind: Use Your Brain to Master Your Day and Supercharge Your Life.
