Stratus Receives UnitedHealthcare National Contract to Improve Access to Care for Epilepsy Patients

[ad_1]

“Stratus is proud to have the opportunity to support UnitedHealthcare’s initiatives to help ensure their members have access to the right care at the right time,” said Charlie Alvarez, CEO of Stratus

Stratus™, the nation’s leading provider of EEG solutions and services, today announced it has received a national, in-network contract with UnitedHealthcare, the nation’s largest private insurer. The contract, which became effective late in 2022, provides improved access to diagnostic electroencephalogram (EEG) testing services for UnitedHealthcare members who may be experiencing seizure or seizure-like symptoms.

This national agreement offers eligible UnitedHealthcare members access to Stratus’ nationwide, in-home video EEG services without prior authorization for the test. This means many patients needing a long-term EEG will experience shorter wait times between when their physician orders a test and when the test is performed. Prior authorization can traditionally take between 14 and 30 days, so the time reduction can be significant. Additionally, UnitedHealthcare members who live outside of a major metropolitan area will also have convenient access to testing in the comfort of their own home because of Stratus’ metropolitan, suburban, and rural service offerings.

“Stratus is proud to have the opportunity to support UnitedHealthcare’s initiatives to help ensure their members have access to the right care at the right time,” said Charlie Alvarez, CEO of Stratus. “This goal fits well with Stratus’ mission of providing high-quality and convenient long-term EEG testing services to patients. Without convenient access, many patients forgo testing completely and extend the time to get answers about their medical conditions. UnitedHealthcare granting this agreement to Stratus means physicians who order tests for their patients will get the information they need faster and help them make better and more timely decisions for their patients.”

Effective immediately, Stratus can schedule physician ordered tests as in-network for most members who are part of UnitedHealthcare’s commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid health plans. For more information about Stratus and its services, please visit the company’s website: https://stratusneuro.com/about/.

Better Aging May Soon Be Just A Pill Away

Slowing Down Aging May Now Be A Pill Away

“We’ve been able to develop advanced forms of these molecules and a series of complex combinations to combat aging, using the best science we have. This is truly a game-changer.” – Dr. David Brown, Ph.D., Seragon Biosciences

Regardless of whether the age-old myth of explorer Ponce de Leon searching for a Fountain of Youth is true, a new nutraceutical reaching the consumer market will mark a major milestone in the expedition towards improving the process of aging.

Researchers at Irvine, California-based Seragon Biosciences have developed a proprietary set of molecules that have been found to slow aging and issues that arise with aging. When integrated with a new controlled release technology, this new nutraceutical RESTORIN can attack the aging process at the cellular level.

“There are many studies that point to these molecules having a positive impact on aging and aging-related health conditions, but, so far, no one has been able to combine them at an optimal ratio to achieve a synergistic effect,” said David Brown, Ph.D., a senior scientist at Seragon who helped develop RESTORIN. “We’ve been able to develop advanced forms of these molecules and a series of complex combinations to combat aging, using the best science we have. This is truly a game-changer.”

Scientists at Seragon integrated three areas of advanced anti-aging research to develop RESTORIN: A NAD+ complex made of proprietary forms of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) precursors; A SSA complex consisting of multiple senolytic agents and a group of sirtuin-activating compounds (STACs); and a group of B vitamin compounds that provide additional support to healthy aging of the brain and the nervous system.

Based on research conducted at Harvard University, Mayo Clinic, and Scripps Research, which licensed a series of core patents to Seragon, senolytic agents used in RESTORIN, can reduce senescent cells – growth-arrested cells that build up as we age and hinder tissue repair – while not affecting healthy, regular cells. Studies in mice have shown that supplementing these senolytic agents increased their remaining lifespan by as high as 60 percent.

Senescent cell accumulation is tied to many age-related issues. As we age, our cells accumulate DNA damage resulting from environmental toxins, imprecise DNA replication, mitochondrial dysfunction, and inflammation. These factors ultimately lead to the formation of new senescent cells, which continuously sprout throughout the body and tarnish vital networks that trigger organ deterioration and systemic inflammation.

What makes senolytics unique is their ability to selectively target senescent cells, thus alleviating senescent cell burden. Rodent studies have demonstrated that senolytics can enhance muscle regeneration by limiting senescent cell burden in muscle tissue. Other studies have shown that using senolytics to reduce oxidative stress and cellular senescence in the brain can improve brain health. Through a series of collaborations with Harvard, Mayo, Scripps, and other industry partners, Seragon was able to significantly enhance the bioavailability of RESTORIN’s senolytic agents, making them suitable for oral delivery.

Another key component of RESTORIN is the NAD+ precursor complex. NAD+ is an essential coenzyme in the body. Other than water itself, NAD+ is the most abundant molecule in the human body. NAD+ is a key component in our metabolic processes and immune systems and is responsible for repairing DNA damage that all of us suffer due to common and unavoidable exposure to pollutants, radiation, and more. NAD+ is also key to the function of sirtuins – guardian proteins in the body that manage cell health and are linked to longevity. In fact, as we age, our levels of NAD+ drop. And, without NAD+, we’d all be dead.

While NAD+ isn’t a new discovery (it was discovered in 1906), scientists have long tried to figure out how to supplement it. The body cannot simply absorb more NAD+ itself, so scientists have focused on how to get the body to create more of it. That’s where NAD+ precursors come in. Studies have shown they have a distinct ability to increase NAD+ production. Seragon has made advancements to effectively deliver these precursors into the body, maximizing the potential for NAD+ repletion.

In recent years, the effective delivery of NAD+ precursors has been deemed the “holy grail” of anti-aging research. To tackle this challenge, RESTORIN’s development team created proprietary, more stable forms of NAD+ precursors. They then coupled them with Seragon’s SERC™ controlled release technology that utilizes hydrophilic and lipophilic vehicles and a pH-responsive enteric delivery system to enhance cellular NAD+ levels. Researchers at Seragon concluded that these new forms of NAD+ precursor complexes, when combined with the other molecules in RESTORIN, will effectively attack aging and issues linked to aging from several angles.

“In the field of aging, a critical issue to resolve is how to deliver NAD+ precursors in a way that best boosts cellular NAD+ to achieve healthier aging,” said Dr. Brown. “We believe that RESTORIN has achieved best-in-class performance in this regard, which is truly a breakthrough. Especially when you consider recent studies showing an increase in NAD+ can even make immunotherapies against cancer more effective, it’s very exciting to be a part of this development.”

“It’s very thrilling to see aging research advancing ways to help people age slower, better, and healthier,” he added.

RESTORIN is available to consumers exclusively through its official website, http://www.restorin.com.

Donations to Benchmark Senior Living’s One Company Fund Increased 40 Percent in 2022 in Support of Employees in Need

[ad_1]

News Image

“It is inspiring to see One Company Fund supporters continue to open their hearts and their wallets to those facing unforeseen challenges.” -Tom Grape, founder, chairman and CEO of Benchmark

The Benchmark One Company Fund, a non-profit which provides grants to Benchmark Senior Living employees in times of need, reports that its associate and corporate donations increased by more than 41 percent to $667,000 in 2022.

The One Company Fund is a senior living industry first launched in 2008 to give financial assistance to those who provide Benchmark residents with excellent care and experiences.

“The fact that donations increased so dramatically – despite a turbulent economic environment – speaks to the generosity and commitment our associates and corporate sponsors have to supporting the individuals who care for and bring so much happiness to our residents,” said Tom Grape, CEO and chairman of Benchmark. “It is inspiring to see One Company Fund supporters continue to open their hearts and their wallets to those facing unforeseen challenges.”

Last year, the Fund gave $325,000 in grants to associates who couldn’t purchase the necessities of life or meet financial demands created by an emergency.

Rosie Belizaire, CNA, a widow who for nine years has cared for residents at Evans Park at Newton Corner, was one of many associates who benefited from the Fund when a fire destroyed her home.

“Everything was gone. Through the Fund, I was able to access $6,750 to get me settled into a new apartment. My children and I were so happy. If it wasn’t for the Fund’s help again, I don’t know what I would have done,” said Belizaire, who had previously accessed the Fund several years ago to help family in her native Haiti following the earthquake and hurricane.

The One Company Fund was also there for Jim Salley, the director of dining services at The Atrium at Rocky Hill for over three years. In 2001, he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer. As a chef who loves food, he was devastated. “It’s the worst thing that could’ve happened to me,” he said.

The Fund gave him $9,000 to cover out-of-pocket medical expenses.

“The One Company Fund is underestimated. In a million years, I never thought I would get cancer. People overlook it because they don’t think something will happen to them. You never know what could happen,” said Salley, who is now cancer-free.

Since the Fund launched 15 years ago, it has raised over $6 million and given $3.2 million in associate grants to those affected by natural disasters, personal tragedies and other unexpected challenges.

The Allograft Provides the Greatest Guided-Bone Regeneration Potential

[ad_1]

Issue 48 Volume 6

Considering the dimensional changes to the bone region, following tooth extraction, alveolar ridge preservation via [GBR] can be strategically included in the treatment plan

Journal of Oral Implantology – Tooth extractions can be necessary for proper dental care and increasing the longevity of oral health. Though tooth extractions are one of the most performed surgeries in dentistry, they can cause problems maintaining the mouth’s structure and preserving the jawbone. To ensure minimal impact from tooth extraction, dental professionals often recommend guided-bone regeneration (GBR) after extraction to help regenerate supportive bone for optimal oral health.

“Considering the dimensional changes to the bone region, following tooth extraction, alveolar ridge preservation via [GBR] can be strategically included in the treatment plan,” pens Eirini Zampara, DMD, and colleagues from a multinational study group from the United States, Brazil, and Greece. Zampara et al. recently published a retrospective review in the Journal of Oral Implantology to compare three types of bone grafts to support successful GBR, including allograft, xenograft, and alloplast. The study results ultimately show that the allograft provides the greatest GBR potential for successful healing subsequent to necessary tooth extraction procedures. Zampara et al conclude that “[d]epending on the type of the defect, the operative site, and the esthetic requirements, each bone substitute can be used if properly adapted with a treatment plan.” They go on to suggest that “[f]urther studies, with a greater number and more homogenous group of samples, should be conducted to validate these findings and shed light to the concept of ridge preservation.”

A total of 32 participants, 19 men and 13 women aged 45 to 70 years needing tooth extraction, were enrolled in this randomized control, multiarm trial. Equal representation of the maxilla and mandible (n =16) was included. Each graft type was assessed through the following qualitative and quantitative variables: (i) graft particle present over time; (ii) structured bone density; (iii) osteoblastic and osteoclastic cell presence and activity level; and (iv) angiogenic activity around the bone regeneration site.

Zampara and colleagues observed that the alloplast group showed the highest vital bone percentage with the lowest residual graft particles. No significant differences in newly formed bone or percentage of residual graft particles were seen between the alloplast, allograft, or control groups. The xenograft presented the lowest amount of regenerated bone and the highest percentage of residual graft particles. All three graft materials resulted in effective alveolar ridge preservation as all surgeries were performed as planned, and none of the participants reported complications during the observed healing period.

The study results ultimately show that the allograft provides the greatest GBR potential for successful healing subsequent to necessary tooth extraction procedures. Zampara et al conclude that “[d]epending on the type of the defect, the operative site, and the esthetic requirements, each bone substitute can be used if properly adapted with a treatment plan.” They continue that “[f]urther studies, with a greater number and more homogenous group of samples, should be conducted to validate these findings and shed light to the concept of ridge preservation.”

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Honors Texas Child Life Specialist for Her Support of Children

[ad_1]

Schenk poses with a colleague after being announced as the 2023 Child Life Specialist of the Year award recipient.

“Child life specialists play a critical role in supporting patients and families at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the country.”

In honor of her dedication to change kids’ health for patients in Texas, Kaitlyn Lavery Schenk is being recognized by Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and national corporate partner Ace Hardware with the 2023 Child Life Specialist of the Year award. This recognition is part of the celebration of Child Life Month in March.

Schenk got her start as a child life specialist in 2021. Her impact at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, a member hospital of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, reaches far and wide. She not only supports the patients and families treated in her unit but throughout the hospital, the city, and even throughout the state.

“Kaitlyn brings such light to the patients and families she serves at our hospital,” said Lyndsey Paulson, Director of Child Life and Volunteer Services, at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. “She is calm under stress and is able to meet families where they are in order to serve them best. I am thankful that she chooses to share her servant’s heart with all of us.”

In May 2022, when the tragic school shooting in Uvalde happened, Schenk was quick to support. Schenk and other Associates went to Uvalde Memorial Hospital and provided a safe space for their staff and children to express their feelings related to the trauma they had just experienced. Schenk prepared therapeutic activities for adults and children, put together educational resources for parents and caregivers on developmentally appropriate responses to trauma and death, and supported them in any other ways she could.

Schenk is frequently recognized by her peers for the compassionate care and creative legacy building she provides during end of life. She is passionate about serving patients with sensory needs or behavioral health concerns. Recently, she visited the local behavioral health facilities to learn about their admission processes in order to create preparation books that can be shared with families prior to discharge from the hospital. Schenk is working on creating a sensory-friendly room in the emergency department to best serve her patients.

Child life specialists like Schenk support the emotional and mental health needs of young, hospitalized patients and their families with programs that bring comfort, joy, and a sense of normalcy. These programs include art therapy, music therapy, pet therapy, play activities, and comfort toys and tools.

Funds raised by partners like Ace Hardware help support many areas of local member hospitals of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. Ace Hardware is known as the helpful place – retailers are hard-working, local, and loyal, just like child life specialists.

“The Ace team is incredibly proud of Kaitlyn and the amazing work she does to support children and families at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio,” said Kane Calamari, President Ace Hardware Foundation. “Child life specialists play a critical role in supporting patients and families at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the country. Congratulations, Kaitlyn!”

In celebration of Child Life Month, Ace Hardware with support from vendor Benjamin Moore, in partnership with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals, is proud to be presenting the Child Life Specialist of the Year award to honor the hard work, compassion, and generous spirit of child life specialists like Schenk and to bring awareness to the need for child life funding at local member children’s hospitals. A $20,000 donation from the Ace Hardware Foundation will be given to The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio in Schenk’s name to be used unrestrictedly.

Philanthropy is essential to fund construction, innovative programs, and equipment purchases at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. Because of donations, physicians, nurses, and clinical teams continue to deliver the highest quality of medical care for pediatric patients. Donations restricted to Child Life help fund salaries, music therapy, the facility dog, supplies for medical play and distraction, holiday activities, and our Child Life Zone.

“Congratulations to the 2023 Child Life Specialist of the Year award recipient Kaitlyn Lavery Schenk,” said Teri Nestel, President & CEO of Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals. “We’re so grateful to partners like Ace Hardware who help make sure funding to local member hospitals can support child life departments and the invaluable care they provide to patients and families.”

Genuv Teams With Celltrion to Develop Novel mAb Treatments / Genuv Embarks on Mouse Platform Business

[ad_1]

We believe Celltrion’s in-depth knowledge and experiences in antibody development and production and Genuv’s expertise in novel antibody discovery with our SHINE MOUSE platform could generate great synergies in providing innovative antibody therapeutics. – Sungho Han, Founder and CEO of Genuv

Genuv Inc., a clinical-stage biotechnology company focused on drug discovery, and Celltrion, a leading global biopharmaceutical company, have entered into a partnership to jointly discover and develop novel therapeutic antibodies using Genuv’s proprietary SHINE MOUSE platform.

The partnership underscores Celltrion’s commitment to best-in-class or first-in-class antibody therapies and affirms Genuv’s expertise in innovative drug discovery. Under the terms of agreement, Genuv will conduct antibody discovery service using the SHINE MOUSE technology to be followed by research collaboration. If Celltrion exercises its option for joint research and development projects, the agreed milestones are: development milestones up to $25 million followed by total commercial milestones up to $680 million in case of accumulated $7.5 billion sales of per candidate antibody.

The SHINE MOUSE platform generates antibodies with greater diversity compared to conventional mice, which led to the discovery of the experimental, novel anti-PD-1 monoclonal antibody, GNUV201. GNUV201 has the unique feature of exceptional interspecies cross-reactivity and binding affinity allowing preclinical disease animal model studies with increased clinical relevance. Additionally, Genuv is developing GNUV205, an improved IL-2-based immunocytokine anticancer drug that is made tumor-specific by leveraging the properties of GNUV201. Genuv currently has NuvoFc platform, which enables the design and discovery of new bi-/multi-specifics. Furthermore, the NuvoMab platform, which directly discovers human antibodies, is nearing completion of development.

“We are excited to embark on our mouse platform business with Celltrion as our first partner,” said Sungho Han, Ph.D., founder and CEO of Genuv. “We believe Celltrion’s in-depth knowledge and experiences in antibody development and production and Genuv’s expertise in novel antibody discovery with our SHINE MOUSE platform could generate great synergies in providing innovative antibody therapeutics.”

Kisung Kwon, Head of R&D unit of Celltrion said, “Celltrion is continuously interested in antibody-based new drugs and anticipates to discover differentiated antibodies through innovative antibody discovery platform technology. We look forward to partnering with Genuv for the development of innovative antibody therapeutics that will bring new hope to patients with high unmet needs.”
