Youth Advocates Call on Global Leaders to Prioritize Youth Mental Health

Youth Advocates Call on Global Leaders to Prioritize Youth Mental Health

The Global Coalition on Youth Mental Health, with Presenting Sponsor, American Eagle, Host Advocacy Event in Conjunction with United Nations General Assembly

Today, the second annual event, “YMentalHealth? Our Future Depends on It,” will convene youth advocates, health experts, policy-makers, and other stakeholders in New York City to call on global leaders to prioritize youth mental health, in conjunction with the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Organized by the Global Coalition on Youth Mental Health – an inclusive, multinational, youth-inspired initiative – and hosted at American Eagle Union Square. American Eagle is a leading youth specialty apparel brand committed to empowering its customers through their style, strength, passion and purpose. The event will urge policy action on youth mental health and ask advocates and young people to share why youth mental health matters with the hashtag #YNow.

“As policy-makers gather for the UN General Assembly, youth advocates are seizing this opportunity to push for a comprehensive policy effort on youth mental health,” said Kathryn Goetzke, founder of iFred and Advisory Committee member of the Global Coalition on Youth Mental Health which aims to amplify the many voices on youth mental health to galvanize awareness, collaboration, and action. “We are proud to help these advocates raise awareness of the growing toll of mental illness on youth, families, and communities in every country around the world. We need policy action, now – our future depends on it.”

The event will feature youth advocates who will speak about their experiences with mental health and why this challenge should be at the top the global agenda. Policy-makers from around the world will also attend and discuss mental health responses, especially in light of the UN’s growing focus on achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). The event is part of the Global Coalition on Youth Mental Health’s ongoing campaign to drive global policy momentum, building on recent achievements like the mental health language in the G7 Communiques from 2018 and 2019.

“At American Eagle we work hard to put our customers first, and we believe we have a responsibility to raise awareness for the importance of youth mental health,” commented Chad Kessler, American Eagle Global Brand President. “We are proud to sponsor this event, while helping to amplify the voices of inspiring young leaders who are dedicated to changing the conversation surrounding mental health.”

“Young people are demanding long overdue innovation in how mental health can thrive and how treatment for mental illness can be designed and accessed, questioning conventional wisdom about more traditional approaches.” said Gary Belkin, Chief – Policy and Strategy, Thrive NYC in the NYC Mayors Office. “Safeguarding youth mental health in more ambitious ways has to be a cornerstone for building sustainable societies, and for the social climate and resilience to get there.”

The event invites people online and in-person to share what youth mental health means to them and why it matters now, using the hashtag #YNow. Youth advocates from around the globe will have the opportunity to join the conversation online, through Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook’s livestreaming platform. Users can participate on social media by following @y_mentalhealth and @AEO on Twitter using the #ynow and #mentalhealth hashtags.

Globally, one-in-five adolescents may experience a mental health problem each year, and the majority of mental health conditions manifest before age 24. In economic terms, the annual cost of mental illness is projected to more than double from $2.5 trillion in 2010 to $6 trillion in 2030. These disastrous, growing impacts indicate the importance of building global and national policy responses to youth mental health.

Featured Speakers include:

Youth Advocates:

  • Lian Zeitz, CitiesRise
  • Gabby Frost, The Buddy Project
  • Ali Hougnou, Project Heal
  • Nora Nissenbaum and Charlotte Holzapfel, Commit2Kind

The Prancing Peacock Yoga Studio today announced it has been selected as a Best of Bucks 2019 contest winner in the Beauty & Health category. Each year, hundreds of thousands of Bucks County residents cast their vote for their favorite local businesses spanning ten categories: Beauty & Health, Food & Beverage, Kids & Family, Home & Garden, Industry Leaders, Services, Shopping, Things to Do, Vehicle Dealers & Services, and Workplace. The Prancing Peacock won ‘Best Of” for the Pilates/Yoga subdivision. This marks the studio’s ninth consecutive year as the recipient of this award.

Liz Conner, Owner of The Prancing Peacock comments, “We are so unbelievably thrilled and honored to receive this award again. The sheer fact that so many in our community voted for us is humbling and is further validation that what we are offering here is truly special.” Conner continues, “It’s incredibly important for us to stay connected to our community. That’s why we’re constantly seeking ways to expand and grow our offerings so that anyone – whether they’re a seasoned yogi or brand new to the practice – feels a complete sense of comfort and belonging when they walk through our doors. This was my number one goal when I founded the studio more than 15 years ago and remains to this day.”

Award-winning, woman-owned, and entirely family-operated, The Prancing Peacock’s flagship studio in Yardley sits on a bucolic farm away from the bustle of everyday life. The second (opened just four years ago) is a sprawling estate-turned-yoga-retreat center conveniently located between the Bucks County suburbs and Philadelphia’s bustling city center. Dedicated to giving back to the community it serves, The Prancing Peacock maintains numerous community partnerships and donation-based classes to address specific needs in the Delaware Valley.

“Anxiety-Free: Who Would You Be?” by Mia Villatora and Jennifer Marsland.

“[‘Anxiety-Free’ is] a breath of fresh air amidst the miasma of anti-stress, anti-anxiety self-help books out there on the market . . . As I read through, I just loved the way that I felt the authors were talking only to me, as if we were having a face to face session.”

It is estimated that 260 million people worldwide suffer from an anxiety disorder. Two counselors, Mia Villatora and Jennifer Marsland, have teamed up to help some of these people break free from the grip of anxiety. Their new book, “Anxiety-Free: Who Would You Be?”, is a conversational and easy-to-understand guide to anxiety and escaping it.

Each chapter dives into a different aspect of anxiety and how it affects the mind and body. Villatora and Marsland offer techniques and exercises to help readers find inner calm during anxious times. Through over a decade of collective evaluation, experience with clients and their own journey’s, they share a simple approach towards anxiety that will give people hope.

“While it is a privilege to be alive in this age of technology and innovation, it’s clear people experience anxiety now more than ever,” the authors said. “We know the last thing you need when you have anxiety is a huge textbook, so we wanted to give real help in a small guide.”

One reviewer describes “Anxiety-Free” as “a breath of fresh air amidst the miasma of anti-stress, anti-anxiety self-help books out there on the market . . . As I read through, I just loved the way that I felt the authors were talking only to me, as if we were having a face to face session.”

iPatientCare is once again partnering with National Health IT (NHIT) Week 2019 which runs from September 23

iPatientCare is once again partnering with National Health IT Week 2019

“Healthcare IT plays an evolutionary role in transforming patient care and we are proud to work towards that goal every day,” said Vipul Patel, Senior Technology Officer, iPatientCare/AssureCare

iPatientCare, a pioneer in cloud-based ambulatory EHR, revenue cycle management services, integrated practice management, and patient engagement solutions, announces its participation as a proud partner in National Health IT Week that will be celebrated from September 23 – 27, 2019.

This September 23-27, iPatientCare is a proud partner of U.S. National Health IT Week. The annual week-long campaign focuses on supporting healthy communities across the U.S. through the application of information and technology solutions.

Comprehensive health care reform is not possible without system-wide adoption of health information technology, which improves the quality of healthcare delivery, increases patient safety, decreases medical errors, and strengthens the interaction between patients and healthcare providers.

Initiated in 2006 by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), U.S. National Health IT Week has emerged as a landmark occasion for using health IT as part of the overall solution to improve America’s healthcare as a bipartisan, federally led, market driven initiative.

The Week consists of events across the country, including U.S. National Health IT Week participants —market suppliers, provider organizations, payers, pharmaceutical/biotech companies, government agencies, industry/professional associations, research foundations, and consumer protection groups— all working together to elevate national attention to the advantages of advancing health IT.

“iPatientCare is pleased to be associated with National Health IT (NHIT) Week 2019 as a proud partner. As Healthcare IT leaders, we are continuously evolving innovative and disruptive information technology solutions to improve population health, enhance patient care, and reduce costs. Healthcare IT plays an evolutionary role in transforming patient care and we are proud to work towards that goal every day,” said Vipul Patel, Senior Technology Officer, iPatientCare/AssureCare.

The award-winning EHR, integrated practice solutions and value-added services, such as, the revenue cycle enhancement and quality improvement consulting, provide everything you need to control your practice operations, increase revenues, and provide better patient care.

The revenue cycle teams are comprised of senior executives with extensive experience in clinically-driven revenue cycle management systems including certified billers and coders with managerial capabilities to facilitate client interactions, escalations, and SLA.

The iPatientCare EHR – version 18.0, has received 2015 Edition ONC Health IT certification by Drummond Group, an Office of the National Coordinator-Authorized Certification Body (ONC-ACB), in accordance with the applicable eligible professional certification criteria adopted by the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). RCare announces corporate expansion, names Nick Garofoli as Operations Manager

Nick Garofoli, Niels Coch, Kaiser Clipston, Navy Keith

New RCare executive team members

“Our number one goal is to provide a comprehensive and interoperable suite of capabilities and services to improve the lives of our clients and those they serve,” said Myron Kowal, CEO of RCare. “We needed to build up our team to achieve these milestones.”

In response to an increased demand for its advanced monitoring and nurse call technologies, RCare, Inc., announced today a series of initiatives to support the company expansion. After moving to a larger corporate facility, RCare has rounded out the team with four new executive team members and has also recently expanded their nurse call monitoring suite by unveiling three brand new products.

To lead the change and support the product expansion, RCare has brought on a new Operations Manager. With a diverse background leading organizations of varied types and sizes, Nick Garofoli is a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and ADKAR trained. He has a proven track record of helping organizations identify opportunities and mitigate risk. “I’m excited to be joining a local, community-oriented company with international impact,” says Garofoli. “I’m looking forward to supporting RCare in day-to-day operations while improving the RCare experience for our clients.”

RCare was seeking a seasoned business development and sales manager to support the North and South American marketplaces. With nearly 15 years of global sales experience and over a decade in healthcare technology, Niels Coch fit the bill. Coch will cultivate new and existing relationships throughout the healthcare space for existing and emerging RCare technologies.

To continue their leadership in emerging technology products and services, RCare has also welcomed Kaiser Clipston and Nathaniel “Navy” Keith to the Product Support Engineering team. With a BS in Computer Science from The College at Brockport, Clipston enjoys working on business projects, mobile development, game design, and music production. With experience in technical support and troubleshooting, Keith has a BS in Computer Information Systems from SUNY and has a background in sales and relationship marketing.

“It’s an exciting period of growth for RCare,” said Myron Kowal, CEO of RCare. “Our number one goal is to provide a comprehensive and interoperable suite of capabilities and services to improve the lives of our clients and those they serve. We needed to build up our team to achieve these milestones.”

In addition to new staff, RCare has unveiled 3 new product offerings: A new interoperable wired nurse call solution, a full line of Inovonics products, and a new system designed and priced for affordable housing programs.

RCare has introduced the iCall system, the company’s latest full-IP wired nurse call technology. Communities can customize wired nurse call solutions, wireless or a hybrid of both. Now even wired campuses can benefit from RCare’s advanced analytics and rich reporting tools along with powerful data to support the organization’s compliance and quality improvement efforts.

“Allowing for seamless interoperability between wired and wireless solutions was necessary for communities looking to benefit from the latest in nurse call innovation,” said Kowal. “They can even save on upfront costs by using existing hardware and still optimize with RCare’s analytics and reporting technologies.”

To ensure affordability, RCare is now an authorized reseller of Inovonics products for new and existing call system installations. Companies choosing RCare’s state-of-the-art nurse call system can now use new or existing Inovonics hardware for upfront cost savings.

“Our mission is to improve the lives of all seniors and those who care for them,” emphasized Kowal. “In order to accomplish this, we decided to make an even lower cost solution to accommodate affordable housing providers.”

RCare created the HCube, an emergency call program for affordable housing communities. The program has an incredibly low cost of entry and nominal ongoing fees. It requires minimal hardware to maintain, no landlines, and only one internet connection for the entire building.

Things are moving quickly for RCare. They will celebrate their growth at the upcoming AHCA/NCAL show October 13-16 in Orlando, FL and the LeadingAge Annual conference October 27-30 in San Diego.

Famous Psychologist Dr. Stanley Goldstein Describes The Two Unacknowledged Reasons for Student Learning And Discipline Problems.

Regardless of what they sometimes insist, every child wants to succeed in school.

Children want to meet adult expectations, misbehaving only if they can’t help it for one or two reasons (assuming they don’t have health or nutrition or serious family difficulty):

1. A child’s ability to function normally requires basic psychological (ego) capacities which form during their first three years of life. These include the ability to distinguish reality from fantasy, to control thinking and behavior, to modulate mood, and to develop a “sense of self” or of who they are.

These abilities develop through a child’s continuous interaction with their parents or parenting figures. If this is inadequate, not “good enough,” critical mental weaknesses may arise with attention and behavior problems being frequent. Teachers, with exception, are unable to adequately help such students, having been trained to teach, not provide therapy or manage a therapeutic setting.

2. School principals who fail to take discipline seriously, by quickly intervening against bullying or other uncivil behavior, send the unspoken message these are not serious issues. Thereafter, both teachers and students conform to this expectation, causing staff morale and student performance to plummet.

While the underlying problems are not easily remedied, ignoring them by adopting the false explanation of prejudice or inadequate school funding makes it impossible.

Dr. Stanley Goldstein is an author and psychologist who has appeared on national broadcasts including The Larry King Show and CourtTV.

Chapters of his books (Troubled Children/Troubled Parents: The Way Out, Second Edition; Shopping For A Shrink: Finding The Right Psychotherapist For You Or Your Child; Through Children’s Minds: The Marketing and Creation of Children’s Products) can be read at his website (http://www.drstanleygoldstein.com), amazon.com, b&n.com, or the iBook store. HIMSS Analytics Survey Sponsored by Dimensional Insight Finds Healthcare Orgs. that Focus on Clinical Outcomes as Key ROI Metric Have Higher Success with Analytics

As healthcare organizations move to value-based payment models, they are finding that focusing on clinical metrics, including readmission rates, infection control, and patient outcome improvements is critical for success. Analytics provides tremendous insight into these areas.

Dimensional Insight®, the maker of Diver Platform™, a data management, analytics, and performance management solution, today announced the results of a survey it conducted with HIMSS Analytics of 109 senior healthcare leaders. The survey examined how healthcare organizations implement metrics and measure ROI from their analytics programs. It found that those organizations that focus on clinical outcomes as their key ROI metric – as opposed to financial returns or staff efficiency – rank higher across the board in terms of usage of analytics across the organization, average number of metrics used, measured success rate, and overall effectiveness of analytics.

“As healthcare organizations move to value-based payment models, they are finding that focusing on clinical metrics, including readmission rates, infection control, and patient outcome improvements is critical for success,” says George Dealy, vice president of healthcare solutions at Dimensional Insight. “Analytics provides tremendous insight into these areas and can benefit healthcare organizations that are navigating this transition.”

Key findings from the survey include:

  • Of organizations that are leveraging analytics, 84% are doing so in multiple areas (clinical, financial, operational), while two-thirds are leveraging analytics across the organization.
  • Organizations feel their analytics solutions have been most effective towards improving financial performance, but they have been able to see the most measured success with clinical analytics (77.7%) vs. financial analytics (73.5%) or operational analytics (70.3%).
  • The primary method organizations use to determine ROI is most often financial returns and improvements (41.2%) vs. clinical outcome improvement (37.3%), staff efficiency (12.7%), or measured improvements across the patient journey (3.9%). However, they see the highest measured success rate (75.4%) if they use clinical outcomes improvement as their primary metric.

We Will Fight Purdue Settlement on Behalf of Opioid-Dependent Babies

“This fight is not over, nor should it be.” – Celeste Brustowicz

Attorneys, medical experts and non-profit leaders represented by the Opioid Justice Team and more than 35 class actions representing infants born already opioid-dependent due to the mother’s use of prescription opioids while pregnant, intend to fight vigorously Purdue Pharma’s efforts to shield itself from thousands of lawsuits filed in relation to America’s prescription opioid crisis, fueled in large part by the marketing of Purdue’s OxyContin drug.

“Our clients, the innocent victims of this nation’s unbridled corporate promotion of an addictive substance to thousands of men and women, but especially child-bearing aged women, will not accept the bankruptcy settlement,” said Lead Attorney Celeste Brustowicz. “This proposal ignores the most critical victims of this crisis, who will suffer birth defects like Spina Bifuda and Gillam-Barre, and very often be sent home from hospitals as opioid-free babies with unsuspecting parents who may not see developmental disabilities in these children for months.”

According to a settlement announced Sunday, Purdue hopes Chapter 11 bankruptcy will prompt an automatic stay of current civil litigation against the company over the opioid epidemic. Though Purdue estimates the value of the settlement at $10 billion, others with a vested interest in the proposal believe this is too optimistic a calculation and could be worth only half that much. Others oppose the deal because the restructured company proposed in the settlement allows on-going sales of OxyContin to fund the settlement structure, rather than the existing profits of Purdue’s owners themselves.

“After two decades of indiscriminate destruction and devastation to families nationwide, it is insincere for Purdue to declare in the days preceding its bell-weather trial in Cleveland, that it and the Sackler family alike are in a rush to get money to the politicians, whether it be the states, counties or cities,” said Ms. Brustowicz. “Purdue voluntarily surrendering itself by agreeing to enjoin themselves from engaging in misconduct is unprecedented, even by Purdue’s own lawyers.”

Currently, cases against Purdue because of the prescription opioid crisis linked to drug manufacturer and distributor falsehoods and suspect marketing practices, number in the millions of individuals. Among these are at least 250,000 infants represented by the Opioid Justice Team. These attorneys and medical experts fighting on behalf of opioid-dependent infants estimate a baby with Neo-Natal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) is born in the U.S. every 15 minutes.

“This is an insensitive response to children and their guardians. The time for defendants and Big Pharma to make amends with babies suffering from Neo-natal Abstinence Syndrome and related maladies is long overdue,” said Ms. Brustowicz. “This fight is not over, nor should it be.”

Ms. Brustowicz said her team will continue to push for a legal track in the Multi-District Litigation before Judge Polster, whom drug manufacturer representatives moved to have removed from the case over the weekend, as well as in the 35 individual states which have filed NAS class actions.

“We’re on the side of the angels and we will continue to press on,” she said.
