AuDConnex is Igniting Better Hearing through Mico-Grant

AuDConnex is stepping up to help provide hearing aids to those in need. The collaborative audiology network/buying group recently launched their Micro-Grant Program. The grant opportunity is being made available to hearing healthcare providers who are aligned with philanthropic work in their community and abroad.

“At AuDConnex we truly believe in providing support and access to help others. Giving the gift of hearing is so rewarding and we want to be able to pass that gift along to people who otherwise would not be able to afford it,” says Richard Johnson, Au.D., co-owner of AuDConnex.

The micro-grant allows hearing healthcare providers to apply for up to 20 free hearing aids per year to utilize through philanthropic work in their local market or as part of an international mission. Applicants must be an ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat doctor), audiologist or Hearing Instrument Specialist, describe the scope of the work or project they are aligning with and the mission’s goals. Each application will be reviewed and rated by the founders of AuDConnex.

“By offering these grants we hope that we will further engage the members of our industry to participate in community outreach efforts and to use their talents to help people in need with hearing loss improve their hearing and quality of life. Giving back not only helps others, but it is good for our souls,” adds Johnson.

For more information on the AuDConnex Micro-Grant Program, please contact Paul Harkness, AuDConnex Executive VP, at 952-300-0745 or paul@audconnex.com.

Study Reveals the Appeal of Feeling-Sharers

People who are emotionally expressive possess more positive and healthy traits than people who are reserved.

The “strong, expressive” types actually have more guts than the so-called “strong, silent” types.

When you open up to someone, you create an instant rapport, because you are connecting with the person on a much deeper level.

“Strong, silent” types with their “stiff upper lips” possess an undeniable allure. That’s why it’s the hallmark of much-loved, fictional British characters, like James Bond and Sherlock Holmes, and, let’s face it, pretty much every well-known Brit. After all, what’s not to admire about calm stoicism, even in the most perilous and dire of situations? It’s certainly more attractive than an adult temper tantrum. Nonetheless, recent research from Queendom.com indicates that people who are comfortable talking about their feelings are not just emotional. They possess other unique personality traits that can actually make them more affable than their more reserved counterparts.

Reviewing data from 1,162 people who took Queendom’s Big Five Personality Test, researchers compared the psychological profile of people who regularly talk about their feelings, and those who avoid it at all costs. Here’s how the two groups scored on different personality traits:

(Note: Scores range on a scale from 0 to 100. A high score indicates that the trait is a predominant aspect of the group’s collective personality. A moderate score suggests that the trait only manifests under certain circumstances, while a low score is reflective of a dormant or underdeveloped trait.).

COMFORT WITH SELF-DISCLOSURE:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 72

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 31

SOCIABILITY:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 56

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 37

EXTROVERSION:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 61

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 38

WILLINGNESS TO TRUST OTHERS:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 63

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 39

AUTHENTICITY:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 73

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 58

LIKEABILITY:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 73

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 56

KINDNESS:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 80

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 55

SELF-CONFIDENCE:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 73

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 57

ASSERTIVENESS:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 60

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 48

OPTIMISM:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 65

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 48

LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL:

> Score for emotionally expressive group: 65

> Score for emotionally reserved group: 50

“We are often in awe of people who remain stoic in intense situations, but there is much to be admired about people who express their emotions,” explains Dr. Jerabek, president of PsychTests, the parent company of Queendom. “In order to share your feelings, you have to allow yourself to be emotionally ‘exposed’; you have to accept the potential for rejection and even mockery. That means it takes a lot of guts to share your feelings. That’s also the reason why so many people keep their feelings, as well as their problems, to themselves. They think it will make them appear weak. The irony, however, is that you have be strong in order to be vulnerable.”

“When you open up to someone, you create an instant rapport, because you are connecting with the person on a much deeper level. We all have feelings. We all go through difficult times. This is why, as our study revealed, emotionally expressive people are so likeable – because they are real. They are their true selves, in all their vulnerability, yet still amazingly confident. So while ‘strong, silent’ types do have a certain allure, emotionally expressive people have a certain warmth and charm that is more likely to endear them to others.”

CR3 News Magazine Raises the question “WHY” regarding the funding of Cancer Research … What’s the answer?

NOV 2019 CR3 News Magazine https://joom.ag/YiZe

Lung Cancer is the World’s #1 Cancer Killer and is one of the “least” funded? … WHY?

Lung Cancer is the World’s #1 Cancer Killer and gets the least amount of funding … “WHY?”

A lung cancer patient’s life depends upon his or her medical team and research community for treatment and hopefully recovery. Because of the research in the last ten years, lung cancer patients have hope; however, our society and government must acknowledge the fact that approximately 160,000 individuals die each year of lung cancer.

Members of CR3, some of whom are lung cancer patients and survivors, are offering these comments about increasing federal funding for lung cancer research up to a total of $155.5 Million: “We are speaking in unison to support this funding; our future depends upon it. Citizens for Radioactive Radon Reduction will strive for improved awareness efforts in support of lung cancer research.”

The National Immunotherapy Coalition (NIC) plans to design, initiate and complete randomized clinical trials in cancer patients with cancer at all stages of disease in up to 20 tumor types in as many as 20,000 patients by the year 2020. The project’s stated goal is to aggressively focus on rapidly developing new treatments for the disease. The organization attempts to rethink how cancer is tackled, using the body’s own immune system and re-training it to detect and destroy the body’s cancer cells. Cancer_Breakthroughs_2020.

Mount Sinai Medical-Legal Partnership Expands Legal Services for Neediest Patients

Mount Sinai Medical-Legal Partnership (MSMLP), an organization formed to address the legal needs of Mount Sinai’s neediest patients, unveiled two initiatives that provide free special education law and advocacy assistance to families and patients in need. The announcement was made at an event held Wednesday at Mount Sinai that also honored the work of contributions of Blaine (“Fin”) Fogg, who was a member of the Boards of Trustees of the Mount Sinai Health System.

Cyrus Vance Jr., the Manhattan District Attorney and keynote speaker, commended the efforts to provide legal assistance to patients and families in need. The Manhattan DA’s Criminal Justice Investment Initiative awarded funds to The Legal Aid Society to support two full-time Legal Aid attorneys to provide free legal services for patients at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Child and Family Services. These attorneys will help patients and their families navigate the special education system.

“The role of law enforcement in the twenty-first century is not merely to arrest and prosecute,” said Mr. Vance. “We can deliver greater public safety and healthier communities if we prevent young people from coming into contact with the justice system in the first place. This is why, through our Criminal Justice Investment Initiative, we have partnered with Mount Sinai, The Legal Aid Society, and other leading organizations to provide the services and support necessary to help disadvantaged children and families succeed. I applaud the Mount Sinai Medical-Legal Partnership’s commitment to assisting New York’s most vulnerable through its new education law and advocacy services.”

The program provides legal services for families, education advocacy for parents and legal guardians, training for social workers and case managers, advocating special education services in schools, and representing youth in suspension hearings. Since 2016, this grant has enabled the Legal Aid Society to help approximately 200 students.

MSMLP also announced the pediatric legal clinic at The Mount Sinai Hospital, a new initiative made possible through philanthropic support that will identify and address the unmet legal needs of low-income pediatric patients and their families. This is a group with substantial unmet needs that can have lifelong consequences.

“We look at the needs of Mount Sinai patients in a holistic manner and believe that if we can work within the legal system to help demolish barriers to education as well as to housing, personal safety, immigration, and access to health care, it will materially improve the health of our patients and the community we serve,” said Barbara Berger Opotowsky, President of MSMLP.

At Wednesday’s event, Mount Sinai paid tribute to Mr. Fogg, a member of Mount Sinai Boards of Trustees for three decades and former chair of the Legal Committee. He was President of The Legal Aid Society of New York until his death this July.

“Mr. Fogg’s commitment to service inspired the formation of the MSMLP. And, I have no doubt that the legacy of that commitment will continue to inspire the lawyers and others who work with the MSMLP for many years to come,” said Beth Essig, Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Mount Sinai Health System.

Recognizing that health care alone is often not enough to make patients well, and that some patients have legal needs that materially affect their health, MSMLP works with legal services providers, law firms, Medicaid managed care companies, and law students to try to meet those needs.

MSMLP, an independent charity, launched in 2016 and works with lawyers from The Legal Aid Society, the LegalHealth and the LGBTQ divisions of the New York Legal Assistance Group, Transcend Legal, and Youth Represent, as well as with dedicated lawyers from the New York City Bar Justice Center and New York City law firms Duane Morris LLP, Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP, Jenner & Block LLP, Latham & Watkins LLP, Schulte, Roth & Zabel LLP, and Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz.

In addition to the program at Mount Sinai St. Luke’s Child and Family Services, MSMLP has programs that provide legal help to patients throughout the Mount Sinai Health System including clinical programs such as Mount Sinai Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery and Palliative Care Services at Mount Sinai.

Early Diagnosis, Prompt Treatment Offer Hope for Those With Rare Form of Pulmonary Hypertension Called CTEPH

News Image

As part of Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month, on Nov. 13, the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) sets aside a day to help raise awareness and improve diagnosis of a rare form of pulmonary hypertension (PH) known as chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH). Unlike some forms of PH, CTEPH has several treatment options, including a potentially curative surgery.

CTEPH is a form of pulmonary hypertension caused by old blood clots in the lungs. Some patients with CTEPH also have other changes in their pulmonary arteries that can make them narrower and stiffer. CTEPH stops or slows blood from flowing through the arteries and causes the right side of the heart to pump much harder, which can lead to right-heart failure and death. Symptoms include shortness of breath, fatigue and chest pain. Because these symptoms are similar to other common illnesses such as asthma, people can go months and years without a proper diagnosis.

To accurately diagnose CTEPH, doctors must incorporate a number of tests, including a right heart catheterization to measure blood pressure in the heart and lungs and a ventilation-perfusion (V/Q) scan that highlights how blood circulates through the lungs in order to locate blockages. Although CTEPH is a serious condition, the good news is that advances in treatment offer surgical and treatment options. One of these is a surgery that removes the chronic blood clots from the lungs.

“If left untreated, CTEPH is a deadly condition. Fortunately, it is perhaps the most treatable form of pulmonary hypertension where even a cure is oftentimes possible,” says Gustavo Heresi, M.D., a pulmonologist at Cleveland Clinic.

PHA will host a Facebook Live event at http://www.Facebook.com/PulmonaryHypertensionAssociation on CTEPH Awareness Day:

CTEPH Awareness Day will also feature inspiring stories by individuals with CTEPH through PHA’s “PHaces of Hope” campaign, which involves a community of individuals with PH, caregivers and health care professionals who share what gives them hope while facing this disease.

For resources on CTEPH Awareness Day, visit PHAssociation.org/CTEPHDay. The day’s activities can also be followed on social media using #CTEPHDay.

PHA’s CTEPH Awareness Day campaign is supported by a sponsorship from Bayer.

About the Pulmonary Hypertension Association

Headquartered in Silver Spring, Md., the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) is the country’s oldest and largest nonprofit patient association dedicated to the pulmonary hypertension (PH) community. Pulmonary hypertension is a rare, chronic and life-threatening disease of the lungs for which no cure currently exists. PHA’s mission is to extend and improve the lives of those affected by PH. To achieve this mission, PHA engages people with PH and their families, caregivers, health care providers, and researchers worldwide who work together to advocate for the PH community, provide support to patients, caregivers and families, offer up-to-date education and information on PH, improve quality patient care, and fund and promote research. For more information, visit http://www.PHAssociation.org and connect with PHA on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
