Mercy Medical Center to Launch The Maryland Bariatric Center

Kuldeep Singh, M.D., FACS, MBA, FASMBS, The Maryland Bariatric Center at Mercy

“Lifestyle modification, eating habits, surgery, stress reduction, and the patient’s commitment to improving themselves—all are key to achieving a successful outcome for the patient, and we address each at The Maryland Bariatric Center at Mercy,” said Kuldeep Singh, M.D., FACS, MBA, FASMBS.

Noted bariatric specialist Kuldeep Singh, MD, FACS, MBA, FASMBS, has joined Mercy Medical Center to establish a new clinical program: The Maryland Bariatric Center at Mercy, scheduled to open in January 2020. Dr. Singh will lead the new center as Medical Director.

“At The Maryland Bariatric Center, patients will have the support of Mercy’s team every step of the way. Patients will have access to a premier multidisciplinary weight-loss resource. I am extremely pleased to join Mercy in leading this new center, dedicated to addressing two of the most significant health care threats today—obesity and metabolic disease,” Dr. Singh said.

According to Dr. Singh, an emphasis will be placed “not merely on weight loss, but treating the comorbidities associated with being overweight, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnea, joint pain and other related issues.”

Treatments will include:

  • Gastric Bypass (Roux-en-Y) Surgery (stomach is divided into a small upper pouch and a larger lower pouch and then the small intestine is rearranged to connect to both)
  • Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve Surgery (approximately 75% of the stomach is removed leaving a narrow gastric “sleeve”; no intestines are removed or bypassed)
  • Revision Bariatric Surgery (may apply to issues that arise following sleeve, bypass, or lap-band surgery; may be recommended due to surgical complication, if patient begins regaining weight, etc).

“Dr. Singh is well known and highly regarded by the medical staff. His comprehensive background in bariatric surgery will complement Mercy’s high-quality Centers of Excellence,” said Dr. Larry J. Fitzpatrick, Chair of the Department of Surgery at Mercy.

The Center’s team of medical, behavioral, nutrition specialists is bariatric-trained and work one-on-one with each patient to create a program tailored to their individual needs. The Center will be located at on the ground floor of The Weinberg Center at Mercy, 250 North Calvert Street in downtown Baltimore.

In addition to the new Mercy center, Dr. Singh will conduct a Mercy clinic one day per week at his office at 7625 Maple Lawn Boulevard, Suite 145 in Fulton, MD.

Patients will be scheduled to participate in a 1-2 hour educational seminar, undergo a one-on-one physician consult, and over a 3-6 month period, meet with a dietitian, take part in a weight loss plan, undergo a regimen of tests/screens including EKG and chest X-ray; consult with a psychologist and attend a pre-op class, all prior to surgery. Post-operative appointments will be scheduled in the months that follow, as well as an annual check-up, Dr. Singh explained.

“At the Center, patients will have access to a premier multidisciplinary weight-loss program that is supported by Mercy’s many strong clinical programs and specialties. For individuals who are suffering from severe metabolic and weight issues, the Center will offer an opportunity to improve their health and quality of life,” said Dr. David Maine, Executive Vice President for Mercy Health Services.

“Lifestyle modification, eating habits, surgery, stress reduction, and the patient’s commitment to improving themselves—all are key to achieving a successful outcome for the patient, and we address each at The Maryland Bariatric Center at Mercy,” Dr. Singh said.

A board certified general surgeon, Dr. Singh is fellowship trained in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery and Bariatric Surgery with leadership experience as a Medical Director and Program Director. He has also taught numerous residents entering bariatric practices and fellowships.

Prior to joining Mercy, Dr. Singh served as Program Director of the Bariatric Fellowship at St. Agnes Hospital. Dr. Singh completed his Fellowship in Advanced Laparoscopic Surgery at St. Joseph’s Medical Center and his residency in General Surgery at St. Agnes.

Named a “Top Doctor” in Bariatric Surgery by Baltimore magazine for multiple years, and a “Health Care Hero” by The Daily Record, Dr. Singh personally hosts numerous informational seminars to help patients determine whether weight loss surgery is the best option to achieve their health goals.

Weight Loss Surgery is the Most Powerful Weapon There is Against Obesity, says West Medical

Cheryl C. lost over 90 pounds with the help of a procedure from West Medical.

Weight loss procedures offer solutions that make reducing weight and maintaining the results more manageable than with diet and exercise alone by getting at the root of the problem and reducing the appetite.

An October 16 article on Prevention told the story of a Kentucky woman who was able to lose 150 pounds after having weight loss surgery. The woman spoke of how she had previously attempted to lose the weight permanently through dieting programs and fitness classes, only to regain it all back – and then some – each time. After considering the health complications her parents were experiencing due to their weight issues, the woman decided to move forward with weight loss surgery in order to get ahead of the close to inevitable health problems she would face in the future due to her very severe obesity. Southern California healthcare group West Medical says that, much like the woman in the article, the majority of individuals struggling with obesity who are able to lose significant amounts of weight have difficulty keeping off the weight they lose on their own, most likely due to the body’s natural response to fighting a sudden drop in weight. The clinic adds that because of this, weight loss surgery can assist in making successful weight loss much easier to achieve.

West Medical says that the body is essentially wired to ensure that it stays healthy and functioning in an environment vastly more challenging than modern-day America. This includes fighting off threats to the system from disease to the once very common-threat of starvation due to a famine. The clinic comments that, when the body detects a dramatic reduction in the number of calories it is normally used to receiving, it releases signals in an effort to encourage the individual to eat as much as possible to build up fat reserves. As a result, West Medical says, the more weight a dieter loses, the more the body encourages them to eat; ironically a feature that was once effective for survival is now a danger to our health when calories are all too cheap and plentiful.

The Southern California clinic says that weight loss procedures offer solutions that make reducing weight and maintaining the results more manageable than with diet and exercise alone by getting at the root of the problem and reducing the appetite. While weight loss surgery may seem like an obvious option for those who are struggling with severe obesity, West Medical says there are alternative procedures available for individuals who are less severely overweight but are still looking for assistance in their weight loss journey.

West Medical says that one option is a new nonsurgical procedure called Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG). In this procedure, accordion-like pleats are sewn into an individual’s stomach so that the stomach’s volume is reduced. In addition to helping individuals eat less, this procedure, sometimes called an accordion procedure, encourages them to stay on course with their weight loss diet, thus increasing the chances of successful long term weight loss.

Medgaus Dental Group Transforms Smiles in One Day with TeethXpress® Full Arch Dental Implants in Pittsburgh, PA

Pittsburgh, PA Implant Dentist, Dr. Carl Medgaus.

Dr. Carl Medgaus Offers Same-Day Full Arch Dental Implants to Pittsburgh, PA

With TeethXpress, patients leave with teeth, screwed into the implants, that look great and give them back their smile immediately.

Medgaus Dental Group Patients offers patients with missing or failing teeth, many of whom suffer with loose dentures, a permanent, same-day tooth replacement solution with TeethXpress® dental implants. TeethXpress allows patients to get a new smile that looks and feels natural in just one day, meaning they never have to go a day without any teeth. The team at Medgaus Dental Group offers TeethXpress® as a solution for full arch tooth loss in their Pittsburgh, PA office.

The TeethXpress solution is a revolutionary approach to tooth replacement. Instead of wearing loose dentures and suffering from bone loss, patients can have four to six dental implants placed into their jawbone that act as natural tooth roots. These implants fuse to the bone, forming a strong anchor for the attached bridge of teeth. Because of this stability, patients do not have to worry about their new teeth slipping, clicking, or falling out.

With TeethXpress, patients can have remaining teeth extracted, implants placed and a temporary bridge attached all during the same appointment. They will leave the office with a new smile that allows them to eat, speak and interact with others confidently. Other benefits of TeethXpress include:

  • Healthy jawbone stimulation
  • Longevity to last many years
  • The look, feel and function of natural teeth
  • Secure fit in the mouth
  • Streamlined surgical procedure

Dr. Medgaus and his team at Medgaus Dental Group have over 30 years of experience placing dental implants to help patients replace missing teeth without the hassle of loose dentures. The practice boasts a success rate of 99 percent with the TeethXpress solution, and Dr. Medgaus has placed over 600 full arch cases throughout his career. For those with complex health conditions or severe bone loss, the practice also offers bone grafting solutions to help patients qualify for the treatment. Bone grafting is a process that restores lost bone to create enough bone tissue to secure the dental implants.

“When a patient comes in and they are missing a lot of teeth or their teeth are hopeless, in their mind they think we can only do dentures. That’s when we begin the conversation about TeethXpress,” says lead dentist Dr. Carl Medgaus. “With TeethXpress, patients leave with teeth, screwed into the implants, that look great and give them back their smile immediately.”

Medgaus Dental Group is a modern dental practice that features many state-of-the technologies and procedures. Patients can benefit from cone beam CT scanners to capture panoramic 3D images of their teeth and jaw, dental implant guides for precise implant placement and sedation dentistry options, including IV sedation, to give patients a relaxed, anxiety-free treatment.

Those interested in learning more about TeethXpress dental implants or Medgaus Dental Group are encouraged to schedule a consultation by calling the practice at one of its two locations. Westwind Integrated Health Spreads Awareness of the Signs of Stroke in Phoenix, AZ and How to Prevent It

Drs. Nabil Fehmi and Maryam Beyramian, Dentists at Westwind Integrated Health in Phoenix, AZ

Drs. Nabil Fehmi and Maryam Beyramian Raise Stroke Awareness in Phoenix, AZ

The fifth leading cause of death in United States, nearly 800,000 people experience a stroke yearly.

Westwind Integrated Health spreads stroke awareness throughout Glendale and Phoenix, AZ, including the signs of stroke as well as risk factors to avoid. Westwind Integrated Health is one of the first practices to offer comprehensive, integrated medical and dental care in Arizona as well as the country. This effort to prevent stroke by spreading awareness stems from the practice’s passion for educating their patients, and the healthcare field, on how oral health is intertwined with overall health.

The fifth leading cause of death in United States, nearly 800,000 people experience a stroke yearly. However, 80 percent of strokes can be prevented. Some of the leading causes of stroke include high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, and diabetes. Approximately one in three U.S. adults has at least one of these conditions or habits.

While there are uncontrollable risk factors such as age, gender, race, and family history, many stroke risk factors can be controlled. The effect that each risk factor has on stroke varies, but if eliminated, a patient’s risk of stroke would drastically decrease. For example, if someone were to stop smoking, their risk of stroke would drop 12.4 percent. Below is a list of stroke risk factors and the percentages that the risk of stroke would reduce if each factor were eliminated:

  • Hypertension – 47.9 percent
  • Physical inactivity – 35.8 percent
  • Lipids (blood fats) – 26.8 percent
  • Poor diet – 23.2 percent
  • Obesity – 18.6 percent
  • Smoking – 12.4 percent
  • Heart disease – 9.1 percent
  • Alcohol intake – 5.8 percent
  • Stress – 5.8 percent
  • Diabetes – 3.9 percent

The doctors at Westwind Integrated Health strive to help patients understand the signs of stroke as well as what they can do about it. To help people retain each signal of an oncoming stroke, these Phoenix, AZ doctors recommend remembering the acronym “BE-FAST.” BEFAST is a mnemonic device to help patients remember the signs of stroke, which include balance loss, eyesight loss, facial drooping, arm weakness, speech difficulty, and time to call 9-1-1.

Motivated to heal the body as a whole, Westwind Integrated Health delivers medically necessary dental care. Their care model is centered around keeping a patient’s mouth healthy, free of gum disease, tooth decay, or any other oral disease, in order to keep the entire body at a healthier state. “Patients with chronic diseases such as gastrointestinal problems, diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, and heart diseases suffer from gum disease and tooth cavities in large part due to their medical problems, not because they don’t take care of their teeth,” says Dr. Maryam Beyramian, a respected dentist and co-founder of Westwind Integrated Health. “At Westwind Integrated Health, we understand the continuous frustrations from our patients with medical problems and design dental therapies that work and help keep your mouth healthier long term!”

Those interested in learning more about how to prevent stroke, lower high blood pressure, and increase whole body wellness in Phoenix, AZ and surrounding areas are encouraged to connect with the respected doctors at Westwind Integrated Health. Gentle Laser Dentistry at Clearwater Dental Associates Saves Failing Dental Implants in Clearwater, FL

Clearwater Dental Associates, Dental Practice in Clearwater, FL

Clearwater Dental Associates Saves Dental Implants with Laser Dentistry

With the laser, there are no scalpels or sutures and bleeding is kept to a minimum.

The highly experienced dentists at Clearwater Dental Associates save failing dental implants in Clearwater, FL with minimally invasive peri-implantitis treatment. The practice utilizes WaterLase® laser dentistry to remove gum disease from around a dental implant and other infected areas of the mouth. Patients with gum disease are at risk of losing their dental implants if the disease is left untreated. Laser dentistry allows gum disease to be removed in a safe, gentle manner, without the need for scalpels or sutures.

“What we really enjoy using the WaterLase for, is to treat patients who come in with mild to moderate forms of gum disease. We are able to decontaminate the pockets and get rid of the bacteria that is causing the disease to progress forward,” says Dr. Keith Kiskaddon.

WaterLase is a state-of-the-art technology that utilizes minimally invasive laser light to perform dental treatments. With the laser, there are no scalpels or sutures and bleeding is kept to a minimum. The laser is often used for treatment of gum disease because it is able to eradicate infected tissue and promote a regrowth of healthy tissues. The laser is also very gentle and does not require the use of sedation. Often, gum disease and peri-implantitis can be cleansed in just one appointment with routine periodontal maintenance required every three months afterward.

Peri-implantitis is an infection of the gum tissues that surround a dental implant. The disease will cause the gums to become red and inflamed, pull away from the implant itself, and possibly spread the infection to other parts of the mouth or body. If left untreated, a patient may even have their dental implant fail. Signs of peri-implantitis include:

  • Bleeding around the dental implant
  • Red, swollen gums around the dental implant
  • Loose dental implant crown
  • Visible implant post

Clearwater Dental Associates is a full-service dental practice that features modern technology like WaterLase, CBCT scanners, and a Ceramill® in-house milling machine. The practice features a team of experienced doctors and offers general, cosmetic, periodontal and dental implant care. Patients can have their dental implants placed and restored at the practice, as well as receive cutting-edge gum disease and peri-implantitis care to prevent the implant from failing.

OMS Logistics, a Mobile Oral Surgery Service Platform, Doubles Footprint in Less than 12 Months

“ As dentistry becomes more consolidated, what is becoming clear is that multidoctor full service dental facilities are transforming the delivery of dental specialty services. OMSL offers an attractive “on ramp” for DSO’s to accelerate this trend.”

As Dental Service Organizations (DSO’s) continue to grow, the more insightful CEO’s are beginning to see the value of adding specialty services to their networks. Recruiting a stand-alone surgeon requires the development of a very complex infrastructure to ensure patient safety in a dental office. National patient safety organizations and State Dental Boards continue to develop more regulations that are rapidly approaching those adopted in Ambulatory Surgery Centers (ASC’s). This creates a real challenge for the DSO’s in that they often do not have the technical or operational expertise to begin surgical services.

OMS Logistics (OMSL) has developed a mobile delivery system to add surgical services and general anesthesia to the dental environment. By incorporating the latest in technical advances in cloud computing and using an anesthesia information management system (AIMS), OMSL is able to offer the same capabilities seen in hospitals and ASC’s. Using the technology, all of these out-patient encounters can be medically screened for appropriateness for general anesthesia before the day of the appointment. Creating a digital handshake before the initial visit is more attractive to patients and prevents multiple visits. Patient’s medical conditions can be screened using artificial intelligence algorithms to preselect appropriate outpatient candidates. Young children and medically complex patients are identified before the day of surgery and triaged to an alternate site of service for their conditions. Healthy patients needing oral surgery can be conveniently seen in the dental office without the need to travel to a specialist’s office for multiple visits. The record automatically captures physiologic data in a secure cloud-based data base thus allowing OMSL the ability to monitor patient safety. Abstracts of these records can then be uploaded to the national anesthesia safety registries thus insuring the same medical oversight as the ASC’s and hospitals.

The additional “value add” of OMSL is that it uses a team of surgeons to service a dental network and can provide multiple credentialed specialists. This allows the dental practice to have predictable surgical days per month and still have coverage when one surgeon is not available. This collaborative model is now a standard operating procedure with hospitalists, ER physicians, and anesthesiologists. DSO’s CEO find this turn key solution very useful and easy to add to their organization to insure patient access and rapid implementation.

OMSL began in Nashville in March of 2018 and has recently doubled in size, currently serving 31 offices, three large DSO’s and multiple states. The anesthesia software support is provided by a customization of the Plexus AT mobile anesthesia record. Plexus Technology Group is a subsidiary of MiraMed Global Services, a leading provider of anesthesia information management services. For more information visit http://www.plexustg.com.

OMSL is now collaborating with Cornerstone Dental of California http://corsgroup.com a specialty DSO that is the leading provider of endodontic services to large group practices. The ability to approach the C-suite of a DSO and provide both endodontic and surgical services is gaining traction.

“For the first time, IV based drug therapy can be given to dogs and cats subcutaneously, thereby eliminating tangling IV lines. These companion animals can get back up on their feet, feel the freedom of mobility and move as their natural recovery allows.” – Doug Nutter, Chief Marketing Officer
