Applied Behavior Analysis Provider Therapy and Beyond Shares Tips for Success for the Holidays & Autism

autism

Success for the Holidays & Autism

You can create detailed social stories, take a trip to the venue beforehand to scope it out, and set up expectations with your child. This not only helps your prepare kiddo, it also helps you determine how to best prepare for the day. – Dr. Regina Crone, Ph.D, BCBA-D, Founder of Therapy and Beyond

“As the end of the year approaches, you may be looking forward to the holiday season as a time to enjoy family, celebrate with traditions, and make lifelong memories. This busy time of year also brings about new foods, faces, and social situations, which can be overwhelming for children on the autism spectrum. Preparing your child with autism, your family, and your friends for these situations can make all the difference in making sure everyone has a “merry and bright” holiday season,” says Dr. Regina Crone, Ph.D, BCBA-D, and founder of Therapy and Beyond, a leading provider of applied behavior analysis and speech services to individuals with autism in TX, OK, and CO.

Many children on the autism spectrum find loud sounds, bright lights, certain textures, strong flavors, and foreign smells to be overstimulating which could provoke a meltdown. Bright blinking Christmas tree lights or a crowded mall may be too overwhelming for your kiddo. Luckily, many seasonal sensory-friendly alternatives are becoming more common every year! Autism trained Santas, specific store hours for soft music and dim lighting, and tree lights that transition smoothly all accommodate those who prefer a sensory friendly environment.

Helpful Hints: Pack a bag including some of your child’s favorite foods, toys or activities. Use this bag to transition from one place to another by using it as a promise. For example, you could tell your child, “Let’s go inside the store and then you can pick out something from the bag.” To visit Santa, let your child include their favorite toy in the picture.

  • Success with Family & Friends

If your holiday plans include spending time with family or friends who are not as familiar with your child, discuss your child’s needs beforehand. Be specific! Make them aware of any food aversions, sensitivity to lights or noises, or if your kiddo does not like being touched.

Helpful Hints: Ask if there will be a quiet room available, and explain the possibility of a sudden retreat to take a break in it. There are two reasons preparing those around you before a gathering is beneficial – 1. The more those around your family know about your child’s needs, the easier it will be for them to understand any behaviors that might seem odd or inappropriate. 2. When aware of your child’s needs, loved ones usually do their best to accommodate them.

  • Success with Prepping your Child

Many children on the spectrum thrive better in consistent, predictable routines. However, the holiday season usually revolves around unpredictable situations, such as travelling, large group gatherings, as well as changes to eating and sleeping schedules. It’s a good idea to prepare your child for all the ‘new’ they may encounter so they can enjoy the magic in the season.

Helpful Hints: You can create detailed social stories, take a trip to the venue beforehand to scope it out, and set up expectations with your child. This not only helps your prepare kiddo, it also helps you determine how to best prepare for the day.

Even after you have fully prepared your child, family, and friends to avoid a holiday meltdown situation, the unpredictable can still happen. Have a game plan for when the unpredictable happens. Discuss ahead of time who will be in charge of removing the child from a difficult situation at a family gathering or church. When performing less structured activities, such as shopping or ice skating, determine the protocol if your child gets overstimulated by the music and crowd.

Helpful Hint: Practice plan B with your child and if possible let them practice asking for it appropriately instead of having a behavior problem.

The holidays bring a hustle and bustle that can leave you sprinting through this season. But with these helpful hints and prepping we you will experience the joy of the season with a little less stress.

Good Oral Hygiene is the Dental Cure for Holiday Candy Consumption, says Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental

When prevention fails, implants can provide outstanding replacements.

The more sugary and acidic foods are consumed, the more measures should be taken to minimize the potential damage that sweet treats can inflict.

A November 20 article on Yahoo Lifestyle details some of the many new candies that are available this holiday season. Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental says that indulging in a few holiday treats – brand new or traditional – is not a gigantic dental danger to the average person who eats a reasonably healthy and balanced diet, but the more sugary and acidic foods are consumed, the more measures should be taken to minimize the potential damage that sweet treats can inflict.

The Burbank-based dental center– which offers treatments in cosmetic, preventive, and restorative dentistry in the famed LA-adjacent city – notes that careful prevention is ideally the best strategy for preserving the wellbeing of teeth long term. The center explains that this starts with ensuring that the consumption of sugary and acidic foods and beverages doesn’t become truly excessive while also ensuring that individuals drink plenty of water before and after such treats so as to lessen the amount of sugar and acid lingering on teeth. The center adds that waiting for about 15 to 30 minutes after every meal to brush teeth allows tooth enamel to re-mineralize, thus preventing damage from toothbrush bristles. Flossing and using a mouth rinse will also go a long way in removing any remaining bits of sugary food, says the center.

Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental also notes that, should damage occur, patients still have plenty of options to restore their smile. There are a variety of treatments that can remove stains and whiten teeth, or when the damage is more severe, protect or completely replace vulnerable teeth or teeth that are too far gone to be salvaged. The dental center notes that veneers and crowns are ideal for protecting teeth that still possess an adequate amount of functionality but may have become unattractive or prone to further degradation. When teeth are past the point of being saved and need to be extracted, the center adds that dental implants can replace a tooth with a near-identical prosthetic that performs as well or better than the original tooth.

Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental says that, whether patients are considering preventive care or are concerned about the early signs of problems, the earlier they get in touch with a dentist, the better. Especially during the holiday season, when money seems to slip through everyone’s fingers, frugal patients will be happy to know that treatments for ailments in their early stages are almost always much cheaper than treating ailments that have progressed unchecked.

Medpricer Expands its GPO-Agnostic Platform to New and Existing Partners

“[Our customers’] faith in us is why Q3 of the 2019 calendar year was a milestone for our company and technology. As our product development and innovation steadily continues, we’re on track to exceed our goals for both this quarter and the remainder of the year,” said Medpricer CEO Chris Gormley.

Medpricer, one of the nation’s leading technology-based solutions to optimize healthcare provider savings across purchased services contracts, today announced that it has expanded its GPO-agnostic platform to new and existing customers. The company, owned by Premier Inc. (NASDAQ: PINC), continues to exceed its growth goals, having signed multiple new agreements this year and increasing its total contract value.

New payer acquisition

Most recently, the team welcomed a West coast not-for-profit regional medical center, a Southern teaching system and cancer treatment center, an East Coast university healthcare network and a Midwest health system to its customer roster.

“While the industry continues to shift its focus to GPO-agnostic technology solutions, our user base has steadily grown,” said Medpricer’s Chief Customer Officer Mickey Meehan. “We work with the nation’s leading healthcare organizations to understand the industry’s constraints and produce exciting new solutions that give sourcing professionals more control over their data, productivity and contract outcomes.”

Expanding contract value

Multiple customers, regardless of GPO affiliation, have renewed or expanded their partnerships with Medpricer to include subscriptions to the industry’s leading purchased services analytics and sourcing software to supplement its sourcing teams’ needs. With Medpricer’s sourcing services, its team of experts work together with sourcing teams to analyze purchased services sourcing data and determine optimal savings strategies by category.

Amplified customer success

Medpricer’s customized, data-driven approach provides its customers with a competitive edge to make sound business decisions quickly. New and existing customers recognize that the company’s data, sourcing speed, and industry-rich analytics sets Medpricer solutions apart from the rest of the industry. In the last six months, an Arizona-based health system identified $2.6 million savings using Medpricer’s cognitive analytics software. Another southwest regional medical center facing a 30 percent cost increase negotiated 10 percent savings on linen services with Medpricer’s Precision Benchmark Report. Additionally, a Michigan-based health system initiated six RFPs within 20 days of onboarding.

Accelerated development plan

Medpricer continues to be well positioned to drive further growth following its acquisition. In October, Premier, Inc. acquired the organization, through a strategic deal that fuels Medpricer’s commercial reach and product development capabilities.

“We hear it again and again from our customers; Medpricer’s market intelligence coupled with speed to savings is a gamechanger. Their faith in us is why Q3 of the 2019 calendar year was a milestone for our company and technology. As our product development and innovation steadily continues, we’re on track to exceed our goals for both this quarter and the remainder of the year,” said Medpricer CEO Chris Gormley. “We’ve listened to our customers’ needs and have been able to tailor our solutions to those, ensuring we offer the most robust services.”

Teen Lyme Activist Thanks Senators Susan Collins & Tina Smith for Passage of Kay Hagan Tick Act

LivLyme Foundation’s Olivia Goodreau with US Senator Susan Collins (R-ME)

This happened because of everyone working together. We must find a cure.

All the letter-writing, phone calls, meetings with members of Congress and the federal government are paying off for 15 year old LivLyme Foundation founder Olivia Goodreau. The Kay Hagan Tick Act is now law, marking a historic moment for people who suffer from Lyme and other tick-borne diseases. The legislation adds $150 million in new federal funding to fight tick-borne illnesses through 2029.

“Last May, I met with Senator Susan Collins (R-ME). The Senator asked if I would help her pass this TICK Act,” said Olivia, who also conceived the TickTracker app at age 13. “This bill almost died a few times. People said we would never get it through, that it would take years. I want to thank the Lyme advocates who kept fighting, Senators Collins and Tina Smith (D-MN) and their staffs, the senators who co-sponsored the bill, and all the Lyme patients who contacted their representatives. This happened because of everyone working together. We must find a cure.”

Olivia’s life was forever changed at age 6 when she was bitten by a Lyme-infected tick the summer after first grade. She founded The LivLyme Foundation when she was 12. Olivia collaborated with the Center for Lyme Action, Midcoast Lyme Disease Support & Education and a small number of other Lyme groups to fight for passage of the Act. More than 150 organizations signed on to support the legislation.

The Kay Hagan Tick Act unites the effort to confront the alarming public health threat posed by Lyme and other tick-borne diseases, which have risen exponentially from approximately 30,000 cases in 2003 to an estimated 450,000 last year. The bipartisan effort signals a monumental shift in how tick-borne disease is addressed in the U.S. and brings hope to tens of thousands of Americans who’ve struggled for years to receive appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Senators Collins and Smith renamed the bill in honor of former Senator Kay Hagan (D-NC), who passed away on October 28th, 2019, due to complications from the tick-borne disease known as the Powassan virus.

“As the mother of a child who suffers from Lyme and 6 co-infections for more than 9 years, I am so grateful to Senators Collins and Smith, their staffs, and the co-sponsors of the Kay Hagan Tick Act,” said Holiday Goodreau, Olivia’s mom, Executive Director of The LivLyme Foundation and CEO of TickTracker. “This groundbreaking legislation will help patients, scientists and future generations to come.”

Using a three-pronged approach, the Tick Act:

1. Requires the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop a National Strategy. This helps expand research, improve testing and treatment, and coordinate common efforts with DOD, USDA, EPA, the VA, and the Departments of Interior and Homeland Security.

2. Reauthorizes Regional Centers of Excellence in Vector-Borne Disease for five years at $10 million per year. Funding for these centers, which was allotted in 2017, expires in 2021. These Centers have led the scientific response against tick-borne diseases, which now make up 75 percent of vector-borne diseases in the U.S. There are five centers located at universities in New York, California, Florida, Texas, and Wisconsin.

3. Authorizes Centers for Disease Control (CDC) grants at $20 million per year that will be awarded to State Health Departments to improve data collection and analysis, support early detection and diagnosis, improve treatment, and raise awareness. These awards will help states build a public health infrastructure for Lyme and other tick and vector-borne diseases and amplify their initiatives through public-private partnerships.

The LivLyme Foundation encourages the public to download the free TickTracker app, which is available at the Google Play and Apple app stores. Created by Olivia Goodreau to help combat tick-transmitted infections and diseases, the app uses a patent-pending algorithm to coordinate multiple tick-activity data sources into a simple and user-friendly map view.

The LivLyme Foundation envisions a world without Lyme disease and supports the work of researchers and scientists who are dedicated to finding an effective treatment and a cure. LivLyme Foundation also provides education and funding to children and their families who are struggling with Lyme disease. For more information, visit http://www.livlymefoundation.org.

TickTracker is a mobile app developed to help educate everyone as well as assist in the fight against tick-borne diseases by logging and tracking tick sightings and bitings. Our goal is to learn where ticks are and are migrating to in order to help educate and prevent against tick-borne diseases. For more information, visit https://ticktracker.com/

EVRL Cold Laser Therapy Comes to Cutting Edge NYC Practice

Dr. Shoshany uses the portable EVRL purple laser to help a fitness athlete in NYC.

The EVRL Cold Laser in NYC

If it makes my life easier and takes less time to set up, that means more one on one time with patients. That’s not something you see anymore in most practices. That is what sets us apart. We get the patient back to where they want to be, not just back to normal, we help them excel past recovery.

Dr. Shoshany’s legions of satisfied patients know well how much he likes using lasers as ancillary treatments for pain and injuries. Not satisfied with the three existing hot and cold laser devices, last year Dr. Shoshany added the FX-635 which also holds FDA approval for chronic lower back pain and plantar fasciitis.

While he’s been getting amazing results with the FX-635, Dr. Shoshany also decided to add the latest Erchonia laser, known as the EVRL. What makes this laser unique is it offers red light therapy, which is what most medical laser devices output, but the EVRL also outputs a violet laser frequency. In mathematical terms, the wavelengths are between 4 and 500 nanometers, so it has great applications. The light is also both antimicrobial anti-bacterial.

Patients complaining of neck pain, back pain or even knee pain now have an even easier time undergoing non-invasive treatment. With all these advanced attributes combined, Dr. Shoshany is getting extraordinary results without drugs, and without surgery.

The application of the laser lasts about 3 minutes, so after an adjustment, before undergoing spinal decompression, a provider can quickly use the laser on the neck or back. This allows the use of additional ancillary treatments to help manage pain and speed healing without adding a lot more time to each visit. And the addition of the EVRL is not limited to an already unrivaled class-leading spinal decompression protocol. Violet laser light is not just a colored diode, it operates on a different wavelength, and may demonstrate different recovery properties. When combined with the red laser, we have a new and unique combination not seen before in the field of light therapy. The device’s individually programmable heads put out different frequencies at the same time so several different symptoms can be addressed with the same EVRL device.

When asked about his favorite attribute of the EVRL Laser, Dr. Shoshany says, “I love portability and ease of use. If it makes my life easier and takes less time to set up, that means more one on one time with patients. That’s not something you see anymore in most practices. That is what sets us apart. We get the patient back to where they want to be, not just back to normal, we help them excel past recovery.”

Whether it is simply pain, inflammation, or rotator cuff tendonitis, adding this laser to any treatment protocol can speed a patient’s tissue healing, getting patients back to their routine functional and pain-free quickly. If you’re a patient looking to learn about the new EVRL, or want to learn how Dr. Shoshany and his team integrate the EVRL laser into physical therapy and chiropractic applications, please call us at 212 645 8151.
