NACDS Lauds Strong, Bipartisan Senate Finance Committee Vote – 26-0

“Make no mistake: Real PBM reform at the federal level must protect Americans on Medicare and Medicaid and their pharmacies. We urge the U.S. Senate and House leadership to enact real PBM reform this year, so that the most vulnerable Americans maintain access to all pharmacies on which they rely. It is time to capitalize on this historic and bipartisan momentum, and not to allow PBMs to complicate and derail the legislation and the process.

“NACDS looks forward to continuing to work with the Committee and with the U.S. Congress to ensure the effectiveness of this legislation in achieving their well-focused intent.”

NACDS released a statement on Tuesday, November 7, in advance of the Committee markup.

Additionally, NACDS currently is advertising on the vital theme of “real reform.”

Allegheny Health Network Advances Virtual Critical Care Service with Launch of New, In-House ‘TeleICU’ Program

The program utilizes the FDA-approved eCareManager telehealth software platform from Philips to support continuous ICU monitoring through an infrastructure of real-time monitors, electronic medical records and two-way, audio-visual conferencing. Powered by advanced clinical algorithms, eCareManager synthesizes and translates patient data into meaningful information which supports decision-making among the care teams and prompts rapid interventions for at-risk patients.

Health systems across the country have increasingly adopted virtual ICU models to supplement care at smaller hospitals with 24/7 intensivist coverage, while providing more efficient and effective care, according to Tariq Cheema, MD, division chief of pulmonary, critical care, sleep and allergy medicine at AHN.

AHN launched its first virtual ICU program with a provider partner in 2019. This program proved to be a valuable resource for the network and patients throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, supporting response and care planning.

“The extra layer of care afforded by our virtual ICU model has provided clinicians across AHN with unprecedented support in the management of critically ill patients, while also enabling patients to more comfortably stay at hospitals closer to home,” said Dr. Cheema. “With the launch of TeleICU, we are pleased to transition our virtual ICU service fully in-house, extending the expertise of our own intensivists across the network and further enhancing the quality of care that we provide.”

Studies have shown that patients receiving telemedicine ICU services may have decreased mortality rates and may be discharged from the hospital sooner than patients who receive traditional ICU care without round-the-clock, onsite intensivist care.

Following a study of 154,000 ICU patients, researchers from the Cleveland Clinic reported in 2021 that patients who received ICU telemedicine were 18% less likely to die and were released from the hospital an average of two days sooner.

The TeleICU command center is located at 4 Allegheny Center (4AC) on Pittsburgh’s Northside nearby AHN Allegheny General Hospital. It is accompanied by other AHN virtual care programs hosted at the facility such as the ‘Digital Nursing Program‘ in which digital nurses partner with bedside nurses to interact with patients; and ‘Virtual Sitter’ which utilizes remote video monitoring of hospitalized patients who are identified as being at-risk of self-injury.

Also based at 4AC is the ‘One-Call Center’ which provides referring physicians with a 24/7 phone line to request a physician referral, emergency admissions and inter-facility patient transfers; and ‘AHN Care Connect’ which manages the 412.DOCTORS line to help patients schedule appointments and get the care they need.

“This facility has emerged as a virtual health hub that is host to some of the most advanced technologies and tools which support our caregivers and staff in delivering high-quality patient care, helping to improve outcomes and enhance the overall health care experience for both patients and their caregivers,” said Ashis Barad, MD, pediatric gastroenterologist and AHN’s chief digital information officer.

TeleICU at AHN is part of Highmark Health’s Living Health strategy aimed at leveraging digital technology, including virtual care options and remote medical devices, to bring convenient, high quality health support and care to people where and when they need it.

“While health systems nationwide continue to face staffing shortages and budget constraints, our virtual health strategy is designed in part to help providers overcome these persistent challenges while delivering patient-centered, value-driven care,” said Tony Farah, MD, executive vice president, chief medical and clinical transformation officer, Highmark Health. “The collaborative launch of TeleICU with AHN as the pacesetter marks yet another important milestone along our journey to transform health care.”

Arizona Oncology Practice Director, Melinda Paipa, commented on the process with NexCore Group saying, “We were able to sit down with everyone from NexCore to discuss expectations for both parties, and it turned out amazing.” Medical Oncologist, Dr. Iyad Hamarneh, added, “It has exceeded our expectations. UCare and Fulcrum Health team up to bring massage therapy to UCare members of dual Medicare/Medicaid plans

Fulcrum Health established the TruTouch network in 2019 as a first step to establishing standards of care and credentialing for massage therapists that would ultimately make it possible for health plans to offer coverage of massage services to members. All TruTouch massage therapists are credentialed through Fulcrum Health to ensure they are current on best practices for massage therapy.

“At UCare, we are committed to going the extra mile to support our members, especially our older members and those with disabilities. With people increasingly discovering the benefits of massage therapy for pain relief, stress reduction, and more, we believe it’s important to provide access to credentialed physical medicine practitioners who will work in tandem with providers across the care continuum for our members,” said UCare’s Executive Vice President and Chief Growth Officer Jay Sivasailam. “Fulcrum Health’s TruTouch network and 40-year history of promoting physical medicine solutions makes them a preferred partner to meet our members’ needs.”

As part of UCare’s expansion of benefits into Massage Therapy, Fulcrum Health is actively recruiting massage therapists in Minnesota to join the TruTouch network to expand access to UCare members. There is no cost to join the network, plus TruTouch providers receive additional benefits such as access to educational resources and support and makes therapists more visible to potential clients through the directories.

Streamlining Compliance – RMD Inc. Deploys 2FA with Smart Auditing

Meeting CMMC Compliance without Hassles

As cybersecurity threats continue to escalate, compliance with CMMC and NIST standards has become increasingly crucial, especially for organizations in government contracting. According to a study by Cybersecurity Ventures, damages from cybercrime are expected to reach $6 trillion annually by 2021. Another report from Verizon revealed that 28% of data breaches in 2020 involved small businesses, who are also a sizeable part of the government supply chain. As a result, there is an urgent need for robust cybersecurity measures and compliance.

The Challenges Faced

RMD Inc., which operates in a unique workflow environment of shared lab stations for multiple users, faced several new challenges in meeting CMMC/NIST requirements. These included:

1. Compliance with specific CMMC/NIST controls.

2. Preventing unlocked and unattended computers (AC.L2-3.1.10).

3. Accurately auditing users on shared workstation access (AU.L2-3.3.2).

4. Enforcing robust 2FA (two-factor authentication) for PC access (IA.L2-3.5.3).

5. Implementing a 2FA solution without compromising employee login speed.

6. Finding an easy-to-integrate solution that would not disrupt regular operations.

Expert consensus statement defines best practices for integration of lifestyle medicine into primary care settings

A lifestyle medicine approach to primary care – where disease risk factors and symptoms are often first detected – could meaningfully improve patient outcomes and quality of life. Evaluation and management of chronic disease accounts for about 80% of medical encounters, largely due to lifestyle choices that influence eight of the top 10 causes of mortality, the statement noted. Lifestyle medicine aligns with many of the recommendations in the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine’s 2021 report “Implementing High-Quality Primary Care: Rebuilding the Foundation of Health Care.

“This panel of experts from diverse backgrounds agreed on many key aspects of lifestyle medicine that can be incorporated into the primary care setting to achieve improved quality and outcomes, while also identifying benefits such as decreased health-related costs and enhanced patient and clinician satisfaction,” said Meagan Grega, MD, DipABLM, FACLM, chair of the expert panel. “It is my hope that this expert consensus statement publication raises awareness of the unique aspects of integrating lifestyle medicine into primary care and helps inform clinicians as they transition to a delivery model that places lifestyle medicine at the foundation of all healthcare.”

The expert panel of physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, a clinical psychologist and other health professionals who practice lifestyle medicine used a modified Delphi Survey to achieve the criteria for consensus on 65 statements, which were divided into 10 categories:

-Integration of lifestyle medicine into primary care
-Delivery models
-Provider education
-Evidence base for lifestyle medicine
-Vital signs
-Treatment
-Resource referral and reimbursement
-Patient, family and community involvement; shared decision-making
-Social determinates of health and health equity
-Barriers to lifestyle medicine

Examples of statements that achieved consensus include “Optimal lifestyle medicine services in primary care are best delivered through a multi-disciplinary team approach utilizing a qualified clinician lead and qualified supporting health professionals” and “Effective deprescribing of medications is an essential part of safe and effective lifestyle intervention treatment.”

Interest in lifestyle medicine has soared in recent years amid growing awareness that the trajectory of chronic disease in the U.S. is unsustainable. Sixty percent or more of U.S. adults—and an alarmingly rising number of children—have already been diagnosed with one chronic disease, while 40% have two or more. Since certification by the American Board of Lifestyle Medicine(ABLM) began in 2017, more than 5,000 physicians and other health professionals have earned certification in lifestyle medicine.

Medical education institutions and health systems, including the U.S. military, are increasingly incorporating lifestyle medicine. There are now more than 300 residency programs incorporating ACLM’s Lifestyle Medicine Residency Curriculum (LMRC) and student-led Lifestyle Medicine Interest Groups (LMIGS) exists at 132 U.S. campuses.

The expert consensus statement calls for future research to explore reimbursement models that make the incorporation of lifestyle medicine more universally economically sustainable for clinicians, guidelines to better define Intensive Therapeutic Lifestyle Change intervention (ITLC) and how lifestyle medicine can best address the social determinants of health.

ABOUT ACLM

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine is the nation’s medical professional society advancing lifestyle medicine as the foundation for a redesigned, value-based and equitable healthcare delivery system, leading to whole person health. ACLM educates, equips, empowers and supports its members through quality, evidence-based education, certification and research to identify and eradicate the root cause of chronic disease, with a clinical outcome goal of health restoration as opposed to disease management. http://www.lifestylemedicine.org

Daytryp Health Announces Partnership with Enthea for Groundbreaking Nationwide Availability of Ketamine-Assisted Therapy as an Employee Benefit

Enthea’s announcement comes after the company recently released news surrounding positive one year data with Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps. Results showed that Dr Bronner’s employees expressed dramatic improvement with various mental health disorders using KAT. As an example, patients with PTSD and depression showed an 86% and 67% reduction in symptoms, respectively.

“Investing in the mental health of employees is absolutely crucial. Daytryp is proud to partner with Enthea to help future-thinking employers offer Ketamine Therapy which have long lasting, transformative outcomes,” said Chris Cohn, CEO of Daytryp Health. “Our team of clinicians and doctors deliver compassionate care while our data-driven approach will help accelerate the adoption of psychedelic therapy by proving the efficacy of these new, innovative treatment modalities.”

Ketamine is known to interrupt unhealthy thought patterns – and also to increase neuroplasticity, thus facilitating some positive rewiring of the brain. “Ketamine is the most effective medical treatment for depression that currently exists,” noted Quinn Snyder, MD, Chief Medical Officer at Daytryp Health. “When a patient’s defenses are lowered using ketamine, they are better able to explore the root of their problems. This can result in long-term relief – and not merely symptom suppression, as is too often the case with today’s conventional therapy.”

To learn more, visit KAT: How It Works & Why It’s Different.

About Daytryp Health:

Daytryp is a Ketamine Assisted Treatment organization located in Phoenix, AZ. Daytryp utilizes legal psychedelic medicines, combined with psychotherapy, to treat its clients for many mental health disorders including depression, PTSD, anxiety and trauma. Currently, Daytryp Health offers Ketamine Therapy. They will offer additional psychedelic medicines such as MDMA and Psilocybin as they become legalized for therapeutic use. Daytryp also owns Bird Song 38, a wellness retreat center located in the Arcadia area of Phoenix, AZ. Daytryp Health combines legal psychedelic medications with an experienced team of Doctors, Psychiatrists and Clinicians, as well as data-driven coaching with the goal of continuously optimizing patient outcomes.

About Enthea:
