United States Air Force Deploys LANAP Protocol and Dental Laser Technology to Treat Periodontal Disease

Used in conjunction with a specialized laser called the PerioLase® MVP-7™, the LANAP protocol selectively removes harmful bacteria and diseased tissue while preserving healthy tissue and regenerating alveolar bone, helping to save teeth from extraction. The no-incision, no-suture procedure will help airmen return to duty significantly faster, with less discomfort and without opioids for post-operative pain compared with traditional surgery.

The adoption of the LANAP protocol represents the first time the Air Force has implemented laser periodontal surgery at the Air Force Postgraduate Dental School, which is part of the 59th Dental Group at Lackland Air Force Base. The 59th Dental Group is the Air Force’s largest dental unit and is responsible for providing oral and maxillofacial healthcare while ensuring service members are medically ready for deployment around the world.

Periodontal disease affects up to 85% of adults and has been linked to many systemic conditions such as heart disease, stroke, cancer and diabetes, which can impact airmen readiness for deployment.

“Periodontal disease can be particularly problematic for members of the military, many of whom have limited time for lengthy, painful and invasive dental procedures that can impact readiness,” said Robert H. Gregg II, DDS, Founder, President and Chairman of the Board at Millennium Dental Technologies. “With the LANAP protocol, we can treat our military in a way that is less invasive and with faster readiness for deployment. As part of the implementation, 16 airmen including periodontists and residents were selected for initial training and certification through the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry (IALD), a non-profit education and research center. Leading Veteran Services Org. to Launch New Critical Service Programs on Veterans Day 2023

The organization had always accepted small donations of non-perishable food, providing them to homeless veterans on the street as part of their Mobile Veteran Outreach. Demand always exceeded supply, but now the gap between food prices and veterans’ benefit checks is exploding due to inflation. To prevent catastrophic suffering for the most vulnerable veterans, they have launched a partnership with Manna Conejo Valley Food Bank. This creates a direct, and life-saving link between the food bank and homeless or home-bound veterans.

GCVF had a small fleet of Chevy vehicles for street-level veteran rescue and transportation, as part of the Mobile Veteran Outreach program. The Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks recently donated the funds to purchase a new car, which was boosted by a $2,500 donation, and significant discount from Paradise Chevrolet, who also covered the cost of a patriotic “vehicle wrap”. GCVF’s Chevy fleet growth will allow the organization to increase its outreach, rescue, and food distribution by 10 fold. It also allows their staff and volunteers to transport more veterans with mobility issues to critical (often emergency) physical and/or mental health care services, court obligations, earned benefits and supportive services.

“This couldn’t have happened at a more perfect moment,” says GCVF’s Harris; “thanks to the partnership with Manna, and direct support from Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks and Paradise Chevrolet, we can save even more lives. AltaPointe’s Behavioral Health Crisis Center Offers Innovative Approach to Fentanyl Addiction Treatment Using Ketamine in Combination with Buprenorphine

Because of fentanyl’s high potency, it is much more complicated to treat than other opioids like heroin. Traditional treatments like Suboxone, if given too soon after opioid use, can actually make the withdrawal symptoms worse.

“Think about the worst flu that you’ve ever had and multiply it by ten. That’s what people can go through during opioid withdrawal,” explained Dr. Engeriser. “The withdrawal symptoms when someone is using opioids can be absolutely miserable and incredibly painful. It is so horribly uncomfortable that people may be desperately wanting to stop using the fentanyl, but they just can’t, because it’s so difficult to get through that process.”

However, leaders in the addiction medicine field are finding that ketamine, an anesthetic medicine often used to treat chronic pain or treatment-resistant depression, can greatly reduce opioid withdrawal symptoms and cravings.

“If somebody comes in and they are having moderate opioid withdrawal, we give an injection of very low-dose ketamine. That, in itself, helps relieve a lot of the opioid withdrawal. And then 30 minutes later, we give that first dose of Suboxone,” said Dr. Engeriser.

In the past, Dr. Engeriser explained that it could take a few days to help patients transition from fentanyl to buprenorphine due to the intense withdrawal symptoms. But with the use of ketamine, patients are able to return home in a matter of hours.

“When we treat these individuals at the BHCC, they can now walk out on the same day with a prescription for Suboxone and a follow-up appointment with our substance use treatment programs at AltaPointe Health,” added Dr. Engeriser.

He hopes that this breakthrough can offer a more manageable path to recovery for those who are trapped in the cycle of opioid dependency.

“We are in the midst of a horrible opioid overdose epidemic, where people are dying every day. The use of ketamine in this way may be new, but I think there is a really important place for this in helping people transition to Suboxone quickly, safely, and comfortably,” explained Dr. Engeriser.

AltaPointe Health is an extensive behavioral and primary healthcare system in Alabama. AltaPointe operates two psychiatric hospitals, one behavioral health crisis center, and 24 outpatient clinics. A leader in behavioral health for more than 60 years, AltaPointe expanded its service array in 2018 to include primary care.
