Admissions and Residency Advisors Reveal All”

[ad_1]

“Non-traditional medical students are often overlooked, yet they’re frequently among the best candidates for practicing medicine because they offer a range of backgrounds, are passionate about the practice of medicine, and contribute to the overall diversity of the profession.”

The University of Medicine and Health Sciences, (UMHS), a small, mission-driven medical school with a commitment to student support and a legacy of successful residency placements in the United States and Canada, today announced that it will host a livestream event, “Non-Traditional Medical Students FAQs: Admissions and Residency Advisors Reveal All,” on Wednesday, February 9 at 7 pm EST. The session will be led by Marie McGillycuddy, UMHS Vice President of Admissions, and Patrick McCormick, Associate Dean of Academic & Student Affairs. In the presentation, the speakers will define what a non-traditional med student is, describe common challenges these students face, and offer insider advice on the admissions and residency match process. With their combined 50 years of coaching and advising medical students, the presenters will share their expertise from the front lines of working with non-traditional students. Following the presentation, Marie and Patrick will answer audience questions during a live Q & A session. The event will be livestreamed at https://www.umhs-sk.org/nontrad-med-stream, as well as on the UMHS YouTube, Facebook, and LinkedIn pages. The presentation will also be recorded for future viewing.

“Students who don’t follow the typical path to medical school are often overlooked, yet they’re frequently among the best candidates for practicing medicine because they offer a range of backgrounds, are passionate about the practice of medicine, and contribute to the overall diversity of the profession,” said Warren Ross, president of UMHS. “We celebrate the rich life experience that many non-traditional medical school students bring to the table and the unique perspectives they offer. UMHS is pleased to host this event to answer some common questions about following an alternative path to med school and what non-traditional students should expect when pursuing a residency post-graduation.”

“Non-traditional” medical students usually fall under one or two groups: recent college graduates with a degree outside of the typical premed majors, and people who are making a career change and returning to school to pursue a career as a doctor. During the “Non-Traditional Medical Students FAQs” Town Hall event, the presenters will address some of the unique challenges and concerns of this audience – including applying to med school when you’ve been out of college for a long time, succeeding in med school as an older student, and the realities of getting a residency as a non-traditional student.

The virtual town hall event is the latest in the series of presentations featuring UMHS faculty and alumni sharing their expertise on topics targeted towards current and prospective medical students and healthcare professionals. Past events include, “Ask a Microbiologist,” “Suicide Prevention and the State of Psychiatry.” and “LGBTQ+ Medicine and Theory.”

Tune in on Wednesday, February 9, at 7 pm EST to https://www.umhs-sk.org/nontrad-med-stream to watch.

Alaffia Health Announces $5M in Seed Funding, Harnessing AI to Disrupt a Legacy Healthcare Payments Industry

[ad_1]

TJ Ademiluyi and Adun Akanni, Alaffia Health Co-Founders

“Most insurance payers ideally would like to review more of their claims, but with claim volumes in the millions, it’s currently impossible to do so–industry incumbents are still reviewing medical claims and records by hand,” says TJ Ademiluyi, co-founder and CEO of Alaffia Health.

Alaffia Health, a cutting-edge healthtech company that is using proprietary AI technology to eliminate overpayments on medical claims, announced today that it has raised $5M in Seed funding, bringing its total amount of capital raised to $6.6M. The company intends to both scale its operations and expand its commercial footprint. The round was led by Anthemis with participation from investors including 1984 Ventures, Aperture Venture Capital, Tau Ventures, Twine Ventures, Plug and Play Ventures, ERA’s Remarkable Ventures Fund, and a group of other best-in-class investors and healthcare leaders.

Alaffia Health was founded in 2020 by TJ Ademiluyi and Adun Akanni, a brother and sister founding team who are using knowledge obtained from their family’s legacy medical billing business to reduce costs and waste in the healthcare system. Today, healthcare expenditures comprise about 1/5th of the U.S. GDP, and a significant portion of that spending is derived from errors in health insurance claims. It is estimated that about 80% of claims in the US contain at least one medical billing error, and $300B is lost to provider fraud, waste, and abuse every year.

Alaffia Health is working to lower healthcare costs by disrupting how and when medical claims are paid. The company offers health insurance payers (health plans, third-party administrators, self-insured employers, and stop-loss carriers) an AI-driven payment integrity service, working alongside them to review claims more thoroughly and in less time. “The issue with the industry status quo is that most medical claims aren’t fully reviewed but are paid automatically,” said Adun Akanni, co-founder and COO of Alaffia Health. “It’s likely that while maybe only half of the charges in that $10,000 bill sent to your health insurance payer were legitimate, a full payment was automatically granted. Given that 80% of medical claims contain an error, that wasted spend adds up quickly.”

Alaffia Health is redefining how claims are processed. It has introduced a more proactive system–thoroughly reviewing claims and supporting documentation on a prepayment basis to ensure that more claims are paid accurately. “Most insurance payers ideally would like to review more of their claims, but with claim volumes in the millions, it’s currently impossible to do so–industry incumbents are still reviewing medical claims and records by hand,” says TJ Ademiluyi, co-founder and CEO of Alaffia Health. The company is leveraging artificial intelligence to tackle this problem and automate the most arduous tasks. Its proprietary system allows each charge and piece of supporting documentation in higher-cost claims to be reviewed 5x faster than industry standards. This allows its customers to increase both the volume and integrity of claims that are reviewed.

Since its founding, the company has grown rapidly, scaling the size of its team by 5x and increasing its revenues by 24x in 2021 alone. Alaffia plans to use its new funding to expand its operations and further penetrate its target markets. Vinay Singh from Anthemis noted, “COVID-19 has brought added focus from all industry participants–providers, payers, and regulators–on overpayments and waste throughout the healthcare system. Alaffia Health’s technology offers a seamless, efficient solution that has an immediate impact on reducing that waste.”

Dr. Ilyas of Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics receives board certification for Mohs Surgery

[ad_1]

Dr. Humza Ilyas of Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics recently received the prestigious honor of becoming board certified for Mohs surgery

“One of our main goals at Olansky is to be at the forefront of skin cancer treatment,” says Dr. Ilyas, “and Mohs surgery offers a notable improvement to standard therapy.”

Dr. Humza Ilyas of Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics – Atlanta’s premier full-service dermatology practice – recently received the prestigious honor of becoming board certified for Mohs surgery. Dr. Ilyas is one of the first Mohs surgeons in the country to achieve this new certification awarded by the American Board of Dermatology.

This outstanding level of recognition not only continues to solidify Dr. Ilyas’ expertise as one of the premier surgeons in this procedure, but it gives patients another reason to choose Olansky Dermatology & Aesthetics with confidence.

“One of our main goals at Olansky is to be at the forefront of skin cancer treatment,” says Dr. Ilyas, “and Mohs surgery offers a notable improvement to standard therapy.”

Mohs surgery is an outpatient procedure that removes skin cancer while minimizing damage to surrounding skin tissue, protecting skin aesthetics. Throughout the surgery, a physician sequentially excises small layers of skin, examining them for the presence of skin cancer. This is done until the skin cancer has been completely extracted. Mohs surgery improves the patient’s chance at a cure and drastically reduces the need for additional treatments, enabling patients to have access to superior treatments with increased accuracy and convenience.

The procedure is regarded as most effective in the treatment of basal cell carcinomas and squamous cell carcinomas, the two most common skin cancer types. The surgery can also be utilized for some melanomas and unusual cancer types.

Dr. Ilyas practices at both Olansky locations in Buckhead and Roswell, offering additional convenience to metro Atlanta patients.

“Mohs surgery can be technically demanding,” Dr. Ilyas explains. “So it’s an honor to be able to share our level of expertise with patients.”

Honor Technology Provides Insights into the Future of Caring for Aging Adults

[ad_1]

Emerging technology will shape the future of home care by creating better jobs for Care Professionals and better care for the fast-growing population of aging adults, noted Seth Sternberg, co-founder and CEO of Honor Technology Inc. Last year, Honor acquired Home Instead, the world’s largest home care franchise network. And this week Sternberg provided his vision for the future of care for older adults to industry leaders in a presentation at the Home Care 100 Leadership Conference in Scottsdale, AZ.

Sternberg’s vision for home care focuses on bringing three critical pieces together—local leadership, centralized operations, and a technology layer—which together form Honor’s Care Platform. The combination is the home care industry’s only machine learning-driven platform empowering local owners and Care Professionals to deliver more personalized care to older adults.

“Machine learning enables us to truly put Care Professionals first by identifying their preferences and client needs. Then we give Care Pros agency to choose their clients based on length of placement or specific client care needs,” said Sternberg. “We also have the ability to provide Care Pros real-time feedback on their performance, giving them a clear path to succeed which in turn enhances their work experience and increases job satisfaction.”

During his remarks, Sternberg highlighted other elements that are vital for a home care company to succeed, including local leadership and centralized operations.

“Local ownership provides us with boots-on-the-ground intelligence and enables our franchise owners to provide a personal connection to clients and their families,” said Sternberg. “Business tasks that are redundant and often repeated hundreds of times within a market, like recruiting Care Pros, scheduling, billing and payroll, are now being centralized for greater efficiencies. This enables our local leaders to focus on providing a superior care experience to clients and their families,” he added.

Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction (HFpEF) — Clues to the Identification of Undiagnosed Patients, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

[ad_1]

Join this insightful webinar to also hear about a critical new finding which the featured speakers believe will be of value to the audience, including clinicians caring for patients with HFpEF and scientists seeking new avenues for investigation and identification of this patient cohort.

Heart failure (HF) can be defined as a clinical syndrome due to structural and/or functional cardiac abnormalities, which results in reduced cardiac output. Identified factors have been associated with risk of progressive HF death and hospitalization in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) compared to patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

In this webinar, the featured speakers will discuss the prospective cohort study which followed up with over 900 patients identified as having HFrEF or HFpEF using the European Society of Cardiology guidelines for over five years (4,481 patient-years of follow-up). The primary aim was to examine risk markers for progressive heart failure in patients with HFrEF or HFpEF.

Targeted treatments for HFpEF are lacking, partly due to a substantial gap in the understanding of the mechanisms underpinning the pathophysiology of HFpEF. Hospitalizations or deaths of patients were characterized in relation to HFpEF and HFrEF due to progressive heart failure.

Please join this insightful webinar to also hear about a critical new finding which the featured speakers believe will be of value to the audience, including clinicians caring for patients with HFpEF and scientists seeking new avenues for investigation and identification of this patient cohort.

Join Prof. Mark Kearney, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Health, University of Leeds; and Dr. Elias Ketiar MD, DM MRCP, Sr. Medical Director Therapeutic Area Strategy, AES, for the live webinar on Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at 10am EST (3pm GMT/UK).
