Houston Emergency Room Physician Urges Extra Caution to Prevent Unnecessary Trips to the ER During This Winter Season

Falls by the elderly are common during the cold season, so it is important that if you are going to do stuff outside the house during this time that you are extra careful. Take all the necessary precautions and ensure that someone else knows where you are…

As Texans brace for chilly days and cold nights in the coming weeks, a Houston emergency room physician is urging Texans to exercise caution to avoid unnecessary trips to the emergency room due to preventable injuries and illnesses.

Dr. Hashibul Hannan, a board-certified emergency medicine physician, and managing partner at SignatureCare Emergency Center, said that emergency rooms usually get flooded with patients suffering from cold weather-related injuries during this period, but that it doesn’t have to be so.

“Normally during this time, we see more head, spine, and back injuries from car accidents as a result of slippery or icy roads, and broken bones or dislocated joints from falls around the house due to porches or walkways that have accumulated ice.

“But most of these injuries are preventable. If you do not need to be outside, then stay indoors and if you have to drive, pay attention to the condition of the road and slow down. It doesn’t take much to get into an accident that could lead to injuries, pain and suffering,” he said.

Dr. Hannan said that with the omicron variant of COVID-19 raging throughout Texas, many emergency rooms may be nearing capacity and getting flooded with cold weather patients could add another layer to an already difficult situation.

“With COVID-19 still raging, it is advisable to do everything possible to avoid going to the emergency room. Even though there may be beds available in your local ER, a flood of patients can easily overwhelm the system,” Dr. Hannan said.

He said he is particularly worried about the elderly, who may fall outside the home and may not be able to get up or get help.

“Falls by the elderly are common during the cold season, so it is important that if you are going to do stuff outside the house during this time that you are extra careful. Take all the necessary precautions and ensure that someone else knows where you are at all times so they can get you assistance if you should need it,” he continued.

Dr. Hannan stressed the need to cover up properly while outside as the temperature can drop quickly.

“Hypothermia and frostbites are real problems because here in Texas, we are not used to the cold weather. People in Minnesota, Michigan, or other such places are used to the temperature dipping down into single digits but here in Texas, we are not. So, it important that you cover up whenever you head outside the house,” he added.

Some cold weather essentials for the whole family, according to the emergency room physician, include warm clothes, jackets or thick sweaters, boots, mittens to cover both hands, and a cap to cover your head.

He added that it is important to be extra cautious if you are going to have children with you when you are out and about.

AONN+ Joins Organizations in Letter to President on Reinstatement of Pandemic Paid Sick and Family Leave

[ad_1]

The Academy of Oncology Nurse & Patient Navigators (AONN+) joined many patient and caregiver advocacy groups in writing to President Biden and urging the reinstatement of emergency paid sick and family leave time in a possible COVID supplemental relief package.

Congress passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) in March 2020, under which private employers that have fewer than 500 employees can receive tax credits for the cost of providing employees with paid leave taken for pandemic-related reasons. The FFCRA paid sick and family leave mandates expired on Dec. 31, 2020. After that date, employers are no longer required to provide employees with paid leave but may voluntarily choose to do so and receive tax credits through March 31, 2021.

As the Biden Administration considers requesting a supplemental spending package that includes additional COVID relief, advocacy groups urge the president to include in the request the reinstatement of guaranteed emergency paid sick and family caregiving leave similar to the mandates in FFCRA.

According to the letter circulated by the groups, the reinstatement will ensure that individuals with serious illnesses who are exposed to or contract COVID-19 and their caregivers do not have to forfeit income in order to treat their illness, protect themselves from exposure, or get a vaccine or booster that will provide robust protection.

More than 30 groups and organizations signed the letter, representing patients with serious illnesses and conditions including cancer, ALS, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, hemophilia, Alzheimer’s, Long COVID, and many others.

The full letter can be viewed here:

February 3, 2022

The Honorable Joseph R. Biden

President of the United States

The White House

1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW

Washington, D.C. 20500

Dear Mr. President:

As the Administration continues to address the COVID-19 pandemic and considers requesting a supplemental spending package that includes additional COVID relief, we write today to urge you to include in the request the reinstatement of guaranteed emergency paid sick and family caregiving leave for all U.S. workers, similar to what was passed in the bipartisan Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) at the beginning of this health crisis. This would ensure that individuals with serious illnesses who are exposed to or contract COVID-19 and their caregivers do not have to forfeit income in order to treat their illness, protect themselves from exposure, or get a vaccine or booster that will provide robust protection.

The 20 undersigned patient advocacy and partner organizations represent patients with serious illnesses and conditions including cancer, ALS, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy, hemophilia, Alzheimer’s, Long COVID and many others. We represent people whose health conditions and whose loved ones with serious health conditions have a special interest in ensuring that people with pre-existing conditions can keep themselves safe as the COVID-19 pandemic continues. We came together earlier this year to advocate for a national paid family and medical leave program and we remain committed to seeing that through in the Build Back Better reconciliation bill and beyond. We strongly believe that being able to take time off work is fundamentally an access to care issue, and our current patchwork system of paid and unpaid leave forces some patients and caregivers to choose between treating their illness and keeping their job or having enough income to survive – while also exacerbating health inequities.

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, 33 million Americans lacked a single day of paid sick time they could use for themselves or to care for a sick family member. Today, the share of the workforce without access to paid sick time and extended family and medical leave remains largely unchanged. With the latest surge of the Omicron variant and the expectation of variants that will follow, it is essential that we move quickly and ensure that anyone who needs to stay home from work because they or their family member is ill or has been exposed to COVID-19 can do so without having to fear for their job or lost wages. This is even more critical to individuals with serious illnesses and caregivers given their heightened risk for COVID-19. Without access to paid sick time, these individuals and their caregivers cannot easily follow CDC guidance to isolate or quarantine without risking their ability to support their families or keep their jobs.

Reinstating guaranteed emergency paid sick and family caregiving leave makes sense not only in the context of the current Omicron variant, but for the duration of the pandemic. Despite significant coverage gaps, FCCRA enabled millions of Americans to access paid sick time and is estimated to have prevented more than 400 cases of COVID-19 per day per state – or more than 15,000 infections nationwide – and if more variants indeed materialize, paid sick and family care leave for COVID could be expected to prevent even more cases.

Our organizations have long fought to ensure that patients have access to care to treat their serious illnesses and health conditions. We view paid sick time and family and medical leave as a core access to care issue and we are committed to working with you as we tackle the public health crisis confronting our nation.

Thank you for considering our requests. If you have any questions or would like to talk with our representatives, please direct your staff to contact Jennifer Hoque at the American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network at Jennifer.hoque@cancer.org.

Harris Affinity Introduces Labor Costing Enhancement to Decision Support Costing Solution.

[ad_1]

News Image

“Instead of maintaining the separate RVU table, the resource intensity values will be extracted directly from the source system as part of the utilization (or charge item) extracts, saving users time and improving the usability of ADS.” – Nikhil Bhatia, Vice President of Research and Development

Harris Affinity (Affinity) is proud to announce the latest innovation in Activity-Based Costing (ABC). A new “resource intensity” element has been added to patient utilization and charge item records. This greatly improves the accuracy and specificity of staff and labor related cost insights while reducing overall maintenance of the decision support system.

“Historically, users would have to use the patient-level quantity field in conjunction with the separate Relative Value Unit (RVU) table to achieve Activity-Based Costing. With the new Time Factor field, the ABC method reduces/eliminates the RVU table maintenance,” stated Nikhil Bhatia, Vice President of Research and Development. “Instead of maintaining the separate RVU table, the resource intensity values will be extracted directly from the source system as part of the utilization (or charge item) extracts, saving users time and improving the usability of ADS.”

The RVU method, which is a common costing method in many Decision Support systems, limits a cost model to a single value per product. The improved capabilities provided by these labor costing enhancements help users to provide more precise information and a granular understanding of true labor costs while reducing the time spent maintaining their data.

Dr. Leita Harris Continues Partnership With Exclusive Haute Beauty Network

[ad_1]

Dr. Leita Harris

For Dr. Harris, the best part of her day is seeing someone experience tremendous life-changing benefits, especially after they have been ignored or neglected truly exceptional care.

Dr. Leita Harris has been delivering health care to women in the Inland Empire in California since 1990. She has achieved many accreditations throughout her career, among them earning her California Medical License in 1988, is board-certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 1992 as well as annual board recertification since 2006. Dr. Harris started Nurturing You Women’s Health & Wellness in June of 2015 after 25 years of practicing in multi-specialty groups, with the first 15 years as a full scope OB/GYN practice.

Throughout her career, Dr. Harris has found the need to re-examine ‘medicine’ and the methods with which she was practicing. It is all too common to feel rushed like there was no time to sit and listen to patients, no time to truly counsel them. Dr. Harris decided to branch out, to research and learn the various, integrative methods to truly manage patients’ underlying problems from a holistic standpoint.

In 2008, Dr. Harris transitioned into a role that allowed her to see only GYN clinic patients and her use of bio-identical hormones in practice began to blossom as she continued at this practice until 2015, at which time she founded Nurturing You. Throughout her research and studies, Dr. Harris has also learned how to manage male hormone patients so that she can leave her female patients feeling great, and their partners as well.

For Dr. Harris, the best part of her day is seeing someone experience tremendous life-changing benefits, especially after they have been ignored or neglected truly exceptional care. She finds the first visit extremely rewarding, however, when she can sit, listen, educate, and give hope to her clients, that is the real reward. It is very common for women to leave the office with a newfound sense of optimism.

Dr. Leita Harris strongly advocates that women need to have better care, someone who will listen and validate their concerns, and not brush them off or prescribe something inappropriate. Women need to have someone who will uncover the root cause of their concerns and address them accordingly. They need a medical professional who acts as a partner, invested in their care and journey toward wellness and optimal health, giving them hope that they can return to a life full of vitality and wholeness. That is where Nurturing You Women’s Health and Wellness comes in.

Shell Avenue Expands Into Executive, Organizational & Career Transformation

[ad_1]

News Image

“Sean McFarland is an extraordinary executive and performance coach, supporting me for the past decade across all aspects of my life. He delivers wisdom, insights, and coaching with tough love, consistency, and a higher power.”

Shell Avenue, a private therapeutic recovery and personal transformation center is expanding its operations. The spiritual growth incubator focused on curated personal growth consulting for people aiming to overcome their life-limitations, such as addiction, negative belief systems, relationship and family challenges, is applying its transformation philosophy to drive massive in-house coaching success for companies, executives and those in need of career consulting.

“At Shell, we see that what unites all people who walk through our doors is some kind of misdirection in their personal GPS,” says Shell founder and CEO, Sean McFarland, “They’re stuck in their stories and reliving their trauma daily. Companies are no different. Their culture defines their success, and the pandemic saw one of the greatest upheavals in modern history: people finally realized the role their work life has on their sense of self.”

Founded in 2001 by Sean McFarland, Shell Avenue has helped thousands of individuals, couples and families overcome their struggles, confront their demons, and transform their lives. Now executives, organizations and other professionals are turning to Shell’s Sean McFarland to help them imbue themselves and their professional cultures with conscious decisions and intentional values. As ever, as Sean says, the goal is: “First one to love wins!”

This type of work isn’t entirely new to Shell. Sean McFarland has worked with companies such as advertising technology giant Channel Factory, SEO and digital marketing agency GR0, Ferrazzi Greenlight, a global consulting and coaching firm based in Los Angeles, and Peter Diamandis, MD; author of Abundance, BOLD, The Future is Faster Than You Think, and LIFE FORCE, which he co-wrote with Tony Robbins and is released this month.

“Sean McFarland is an extraordinary executive and performance coach, supporting me for the past decade across all aspects of my life. He delivers wisdom, insights, and coaching with tough love, consistency, and a higher power. He is extraordinarily pro-active in reaching out and making himself available at a level I’ve never experienced before. I feel blessed to have Sean in my corner.”

At the organizational level, academic research emphasizes how strategically vital company culture is to organizational performance and employee well-being and the pandemic has put enormous stress on all companies, even those with strong cultural track records.

The Shell Avenue philosophy takes a full 360º approach to the individual and institution with a focus on transparency, equality, and the importance of pause-driven decision-making. Pause-driven decision-making is all about creating empathic, non-reactive corporate environments by investing in fulfillment in all areas of employees’ lives. Time and again, we’ve seen how more fulfilled employees produce more effective work, unconstrained by personal resentments, unnecessary intra-office rivalries, and other day-to-day grievances or issues which jam them up and cause them to feel out-of-sync with their colleagues and the corporate mission.

“I look at my employees and my company in a completely new way thanks to Sean. I can’t wait to see other companies and executives benefit from what Shell has managed to provide GR0,” says GRO’s CEO and Founder, Kevin Miller, “As companies like ours continue to adapt to new-normal conditions, the Shell Avenue offering is welcome indeed.”

Shell Avenue’s Sean McFarland offers one-to-one coaching, in-house employee coaching, and focused corporate workshops and retreats both online and in-person. For more information, or to book a consultation, visit the Shell website here.
