Caring.com Study Finds 1 in 5 Americans Died from COVID-19 Without Leaving Behind an Estate Plan

[ad_1]

Caring.com, a leading senior living referral service and the nation’s top site for senior care reviews, has published a recent study that examines the impact of COVID-19 on estate planning. The study provides insight into how personal experiences with the virus have shaped the way Americans approach end-of-life planning. Caring’s research experts examined responses from two separate surveys – both conducted in early 2022.

According to the study, 1 out of 5 Americans who died from COVID-19 had no estate plan in place. Forty-four percent of respondents say their loved ones had not filed any estate planning documents or they were unaware of any. The majority of respondents did indicate that they had some type of estate planning document: 23 percent prepared a will, 18 percent established a living trust and 16 percent had a different kind of estate plan.

For those who had a serious case and survived, survey results indicate that COVID-19 was a motivator to obtain a will – 48 percent of respondents who had a serious case of COVID-19 say they have a will. COVID-19 also motivated the loved ones of those who had a serious case of COVID-19. Forty-two percent of Americans who had second-hand experience with COVID-19 have an estate planning document. In comparison, only 29 percent of Americans without first or second-hand experience with the virus have a will, living trust, or any estate planning document.

“The COVID-19 pandemic was a wake-up call for Americans,” says Jim Rosenthal, CEO of Caring.com. “The increased exposure to sickness and death encouraged many people to become more proactive about end-of-life care and planning. Based on our study findings, there’s a need to increase awareness about estate planning and for more Americans to establish their end-of-life documents.”

Young adults are also more likely to engage in estate planning due to COVID-19. Twenty-nine percent of respondents aged 18-34 took action to obtain estate planning documents due to COVID-19. Middle-aged adults and seniors are less likely to be influenced by the pandemic. Only 22 percent of respondents in the 35-54 age group said COVID-19 motivated them to take steps to prepare an estate plan. Likewise, 13 percent of Americans aged 55 or older said the pandemic prompted them to start estate planning.

Caring.com conducted two separate surveys in 2022 – the information in this study is derived from those surveys. One survey was administered via the online survey platform Pollfish, and includes responses from 1,000 Americans who lost a family member due to COVID-19. The other survey is Caring.com’s annual estate planning study conducted in partnership with YouGov and surveyed 2,600+ American adults. Leading Long-Term Care Pharmacy Utilizes Buying Power to Combat Rising Drug Costs

[ad_1]

News Image

“When our facility decided to change pharmacy services to UnitedRx, it was due to their ability to offer a wide variety of products for my residents at the most cost-effective rates,” said Gem City Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center Director of Nursing Ken Chapman.

As prices continue to rise in the U.S. across all markets, many nursing facilities and residents are feeling the pressure of escalating prescription drug costs. High pricing remains a major obstacle for many facilities that no longer have the bandwidth to accommodate patients requiring critical medicine. UnitedRx, the Midwest’s largest full-service, independent long-term care pharmacy, is utilizing its impressive buying power to provide long-term care facilities with typically expensive drugs at a more affordable price point.

“Prescription drug costs continue to rise with no sign of slowing down, placing a lot of stress on nursing facilities that accommodate residents who require expensive medications,” said UnitedRx Chief Executive Officer Chuck Benain. “We understand that there are limited dollars for new admissions, and we are always looking for ways for facilities to reduce the drug spend on those admissions.”

Employing over 20 suppliers to find the best offers from multiple manufacturers, UnitedRx secures highly demanded prescriptions at a comparatively lower price point. The pharmacy uses multiple techniques to save facilities money on their drug spending, continuously working to provide a transparent model that proves effective time and time again.

“Facing the challenges of maintaining a superior competitive clinical program in Post-Acute Care requires superior clinical partners,” said Gem City Healthcare & Rehabilitation Center Director of Nursing Ken Chapman. “When our facility decided to change pharmacy services to UnitedRx, it was due to their ability to offer a wide variety of products for my residents at the most cost-effective rates. I have saved several thousand dollars a month while offering a superior clinical service associated with the now availability of normally high-cost medications for reasonable rates. This has allowed my facility to expand the ability to accept referrals that would otherwise be denied given the costs in servicing their clinical plan of care. On top of the savings benefits I have direct access to speak to the team in getting my needs met in every capacity. As a DON with 26 years’ experience in Post-Acute Care, I have never had a more dedicated pharmacy partner.”

Through its unique pricing strategies, UnitedRx offers prescription drugs that are notoriously expensive such as Insulins as well as inhalers, and over the counter (OTC) medications. Daptomycin, for example, is an antibiotic used to treat complex skin and tissue infections and normally has a market value of $1,490.36 at full price.

“This antibiotic, like so many others, is extremely expensive,” said UnitedRx National Director of Sales and Marketing Melanie Williams. “With our buying power, we are able to offer this medication at 1/10th of the normal market rate. Making highly demanded prescriptions such as Daptomycin more accessible, really opens doors for more admissions in nursing homes.”

Based in Illinois, UnitedRx currently provides services to over 350 facilities across 20 states, totaling more than 36,000 beds at skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities, group homes, intermediate care facilities (ICF-DD), and hospice. Priding itself on providing a friendly neighborhood pharmacy experience, the organization pledges to exceed all expectations with state-of-the-art communication and packaging technologies, as well as custom and flexible solutions to address specific customer needs and centralized billing.

TERI Students with Special Needs Raise Money for Ukrainians with Similar Disabilities

[ad_1]

TERI Learning Academy Student designed t-shirts

“For most people with intellectual disabilities and their families, it’s not possible to leave the war zone so they’re in constant danger and basic human needs aren’t being met. By creating a personally meaningful fundraising project we hope will have a positive impact.” Cindy Rogers

TERI Learning Academy Transition Class comprised of students with special needs ranging from autism to Downs Syndrome, cerebral palsy, and other developmental challenges, has initiated a project to raise funds for children and adults in the Ukraine with similar disabilities. A t-shirt designed by the students will be sold via the TERI website, Sheri’s Unique Boutique, and TERI’s Inspired Resale Shop. Proceeds from the sale of the t-shirts will be forwarded to Inclusion Europe (http://www.inclusion-europe.eu/) which is sending those funds directly to the Ukraine VGO Coalition. 100% of the money collected by the Coalition and their local organizations buys food, clean water, medicine, hygiene products, sleeping bags, clothes, and other urgently needed goods.

Cindy Rogers, TERI Learning Academy Instructional Assistant, developed the idea for the fundraiser as a result of her concerns over the plight of Ukrainian citizens with special needs and the immense burden on their loved ones. “For most people with intellectual disabilities and their families, it’s not possible to leave the war zone so they’re in constant danger and basic human needs aren’t being met. Our TERI students and teachers are eager to help by creating a personally meaningful fundraising project we hope will have a positive impact.”

Cheryl Kilmer, TERI CEO commented, “As a non-profit, we depend on the generosity and kindness of our donors. However, we’ve always made the importance of giving back to the local and international community a key component of the TERI culture and the organization’s core values. The situation for people in the Ukraine with special needs is heartbreaking. Our goal is to bring some awareness to their plight, generate funds, and allow our students to experience compassion for others with similar challenges but in much tougher circumstances.”

The TERI Learning Academy students are creating ad posters and will begin taking T-shirt orders this week. To order or donate, go to https://give.teriinc.org/TLAUkraineStrong.

CommonSpirit CEO Lloyd Dean Joins “Danforth Dialogues” Podcast To Talk About Leadership Lessons From His Groundbreaking Career

[ad_1]

CommonSpirit Health CEO Lloyd H. Dean joined Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM) for the latest edition of its new “Danforth Dialogues” podcast to discuss his groundbreaking career as a pharmaceutical company executive and leader of the country’s largest Catholic hospital system with MSM President and CEO Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD, FACOG.

Dean talked about his life growing up in Muskegon, Michigan, graduating from Western Michigan University, where he served as president of the student body and a member of the school’s Board of Trustees, to, his time as a teacher, then Executive Vice President at UpJohn before his long career as a hospital system executive.

“As he winds down his historic career, it was indeed a unique opportunity to have Lloyd on Danforth Dialogues to talk about his personal journey and provide his insights on successful leadership,” said Dr. Montgomery Rice. “Our conversation with Lloyd was the first Danforth Dialogues podcast before a live audience with members of both organizations joining us for the event.”

Dean, who also was the keynote speaker at the school’s 38th Commencement Exercises on May 21, talked about the strong support he received from his family that helped to inspire him to decide early in life that he wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. “In my whole career, I have had two disciplines, one was education which led me to become a school teacher, and the second was health care,” he said.

Dean also noted several key traits of successful leaders. “Number 1, for every opportunity I have had, I tried to be the most prepared,” he said. “Number 2, I was inquisitive. I tried to listen and learn from other people, and, third, I understood that in larger opportunities, it’s not about you, but your ability to get things done through other people.”

The Dean podcast episode is the first part of a two-part conversation. In the second part to air in July, Dean and Dr. Montgomery Rice will focus on the More In Common Alliance, an innovative partnership between the two organizations that seek to increase minority health practitioners and help reduce health disparities in underserved communities across the country.

Launched in March, “Danforth Dialogues” focuses on the leadership lessons from the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic and their broader implication for society. Named after the historic Danforth Chapel on the Morehouse College campus, the podcast series will also feature a cross-section of guests and topics not directly related to the pandemic but focused on broader aspects of leadership.
