Through this partnership, Valley Health System will deploy eVideon’s fully integrated Vibe Health digital care experience platform. Using Vibe Health’s Engage TV, Insight digital whiteboard, Companion bedside tablet and Aware digital door sign products, the platform will integrate with the hospital’s electronic medical record (EMR) to provide a uniquely personalized experience to patients and their loved ones throughout their stay. The integrated platform will also streamline clinical workflow by automating manual tasks such as education assignment and documentation, as well as non-clinical service requests, giving nurses more time for patient care.

eVideon also convened a Vendor Summit with Valley Health System, bringing together the 15 solution providers who will be involved in the project. This collaboration will enable the seamless integration of multiple technologies throughout the hospital, enabling VHS to deliver a world-class tech-enabled experience to patients, their families, and staff.

Safecret Launches New Feature to Enhance Its Platform, Giving Users More Control of Final Messages to Loved Ones

Safecret delivers comfort to loved ones left behind through heartfelt messages

My hope is that Safecret changes our perceptions of death and offers even a little bit of comfort in one of life’s most challenging moments.

Thinking about our death can be disconcerting. Fearing that we’ll depart this life without letting loved ones know how we feel is a fear many people harbor. But thanks to the newest updates to the Safecret app, people can ensure that those they love know how they really felt about them in life through its messaging platform and emergency contact updates.

Safecret was launched in November 2021 and went live with its mobile app in March 2022. It aims to take some of the fear and uncertainty out of death by helping people have the peace of mind that any final messages they want to share with loved ones are communicated to them even after they are gone. The app allows users to write any message, including letters, poems, song lyrics, and more, to special people in their lives. Once the user departs, the personalized message is sent to the intended recipient, giving them comfort and helping their loved one’s legacy live on.

With the release of expanded emergency contact configuration, Safecret now allows users to request a manual wellness check before sending out final messages to recipients, ensuring that they are appropriately released. With these updates, app users can input emergency contact information and inactivity times that will trigger notifications. If the user does not log into the Safecret system for the user-specified amount of time, the app will send mobile and email notifications. If there is no response from the user, the Safecret team will perform a manual wellness check by contacting the user’s emergency contacts. If they confirm the user has passed away, Safecret will then deliver the messages to their intended recipients.

Anup Kattel, a Sydney-based engineer and entrepreneur, developed the app after his own experiences with losing loved ones. As a teen, Kattel lost someone close to him to cancer, and his cousin also passed away six years ago. His cousin was 25, and his death was unexpected.

“Losing my cousin so unexpectedly was shocking and filled my entire family with grief and so many questions,” said Kattel. “He didn’t leave a will, and it left us wondering what his final wishes were and if there was anything he would want us to do to honor his memory. It took me a long time to fully grapple with his death. But I also began to think about if there is something I could do to help make such a grief-filled time a little easier on others.”

Kattel realized that part of the shock and grief from losing a loved one comes from the uncertainty of knowing if those we love really know how we felt about them and if we truly said everything we needed to in life. Moved by the desire to help overcome these uncertainties, he leveraged his background in software engineering to create Safecret.

In creating the platform, Kattel also wanted to be sure the app met the highest industry standards of security and safety to protect users’ private messages and personal data. Safecret employs AES-256 and HSM RSA-4096 encryption to protect final messages and recipient details.

“My hope is that Safecret changes our perceptions of death and offers even a little bit of comfort in one of life’s most challenging moments,” added Kattel. “Our newest feature lets our users exercise more control over their final words, and we’re looking at additional updates in the coming weeks to further enhance the platform.”

SC Johnson and the United Nations Foundation’s Beat Malaria Campaign Join Forces to Eradicate Malaria in the African Great Lakes Region

Today, SC Johnson announced a partnership with the United Nations (UN) Foundation’s United to Beat Malaria (Beat Malaria) campaign. The partnership will leverage SC Johnson’s expertise in science and innovation and Beat Malaria’s global network of resources and educational content to deliver preventative measures to hard-to-reach communities across the African Great Lakes region.

In addition, Beat Malaria and SC Johnson will develop engaging digital content that illustrates the impact of malaria across the region and tells the stories of the families and health workers impacted by this disease.

This partnership aims to support and highlight the Great Lakes Malaria Initiative (GLMI), a multi-country collaboration supported by SC Johnson that aims to reduce malaria cases in the African Great Lakes region by 50% by 2025.

“The Great Lakes Malaria Initiative is a powerful example of the collective ambition and determination we need to end malaria for good,” said Elizabeth Cousens, the UN Foundation’s President and CEO. “We’re proud to work with country leaders, UN partners and SC Johnson to cut malaria cases in the Great Lakes region in half by 2025. For the past six decades, SC Johnson has been applying their entomological expertise to develop innovative products that provide protection against malaria and other insect-borne diseases. The partnership between the UN Foundation’s Beat Malaria campaign and SC Johnson is another step the organizations are taking to work towards a malaria-free generation.

Working toward a world without malaria

SC Johnson has a long history of using its expertise and core competencies to fight mosquito-borne, preventable diseases and expanding access to healthcare in the Great Lakes Africa region.

Some of the other ways the company is working to help eradicate the disease include:


  • Coordinating on the GLMI to help reduce malaria cases and deaths, with additional funds supporting health posts.
  • Partnering with Rwanda’s Ministry of Health and the Society for Family Health to establish health posts across the country that address malaria and other public health issues. Since 2018, the partnership has launched nearly 70 health posts in Rwanda; and in 2021, helped establish the first health post in South Sudan.
  • Creating and distributing Mosquito Shield™, a low-cost, effective indoor spatial repellent, to families where core interventions are constrained.
  • Developing optimized versions of spatial repellents that are long-lasting, low-cost and offer further solutions for area protection for families who need it most.
  • Additionally, the company continues to support entomology resourcing and providing preventative education for the approximately 60 million people in the region through partnerships and investments.

Collective action and partnership

This week, SC Johnson and the UN Foundation will both be at the Kigali Summit on Malaria and Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTDs), taking place in Rwanda alongside the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). The Summit will foster critical discussions centered around innovation and reaffirming values, actions and policies to improve the lives of the people in the communities around the globe.

Person-Centered Thinking Training in Universities Needed to Achieve Educational Equity

Universities are on the right track with implementing these inclusion programs, but they need person centered thinking training and support to ensure they are maximizing opportunities for each student’s success.

Recent statistics from Yale University report that approximately 11 percent of undergraduates in the United States register a disability with their school, and the actual number of college students with disabilities is likely to be two or three times higher than the 11 percent reported. (1) While more universities are starting to include people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in their curriculum, this only scratches the surface in terms of ensuring that this part of the population receives the same educational experience as everyone else. To achieve this, schools need to train staff who support people with IDD on how to deliver a person-centered approach that promotes post-secondary (any type of education beyond high school) educational equity. Patrick Lane, who manages person-centered services for IntellectAbility (a leader in providing training to universities for people with IDD), says, “equity is not equality—equality means ‘everybody goes to college’ while equity means ‘having the same educational experiences as everybody else.’”

College programs that promote educational equity for people with IDD are on the rise; a study showed that in 2019 over 260 colleges nationwide offered on-campus transition programs for the IDD community, compared to the mere 25 programs being offered in the United States back in 2004. (2) But while these programs have grown in recent years, they still face challenges. (3)

Simply implementing these inclusion programs does not go far enough to give people with IDD an equitable opportunity, according to Lane. Recent research found that students with disabilities are less likely to feel accepted or supported at their university,(4) and one-third of students with mental health disabilities reported that they were unaware of accommodations they qualified for at their post-secondary education institution. (5)

Even with these programs in place, there is still a specific skillset required among staff involved to provide a person-centered thinking approach that will amplify intellectual disability services and allow them to effectively reach the person, says Lane. ”Universities are on the right track with implementing these inclusion programs, but they need person centered thinking training and support to ensure they are maximizing opportunities for each student’s success.”

Bringing in experts that are well-versed in person-centered thinking allows post-secondary schools to move beyond something that was once just a theory and put it into action. The training for person-centered thinking has become more well known in certain environments, such as home and community-based services, but many universities have yet to be introduced to the unique person-centered approach offered by companies such as IntellectAbility. “It’s about making our two worlds meet to improve educational experiences for people with IDD,” says Lane.

Two common goals are behind the person-centered thinking approach.

1.    First: to give students with IDD a successful, integrated, and inclusive college experience.

2.    Second: to provide supporters of people with IDD with an approach that helps students gain or regain positive control over their lives. Person-Centered Practices are rooted in Person-Centered Thinking (PCT), which helps others to gain and keep a positive and correct response to the person. It promotes the all-important balance of what is Important TO and FOR the person.

Lane stresses that health and safety always come first, and the person-centered thinking approach leaves no room for neglect in this area.

Lane comments on frequently asked questions by universities:

  • What is the best way to go about introducing these programs to universities and getting them implemented? Lane says it’s important to first market the programs to administrative personnel at these universities to get the program started and allow the concept of person-centered thinking to penetrate. For the university staff, such as tutors and mentors, who will be working directly with people with IDD, there would be more formal training required.
  • What are some of the specific unique aspects that person-centered thinking training addresses that can easily be missed by personnel unfamiliar with this approach? One important aspect is having awareness of what the person with a disability values, and what brings them a sense of comfort. Receiving training in the person-centered thinking approach allows the tutor, mentor or whoever is working with the person to understand what is being communicated by the person both verbal and non-verbally.
  • By not incorporating the person-centered thinking approach, what risks are these universities taking? First, it’s critical that the university tutors and other professionals working with this population treat the person with respect, promote autonomy and avoid offending the individual and losing their trust, because then the services they are providing could be rendered useless. It is also very important that the programs promote independence and do not encourage helplessness in people with IDD.

Some programs are actively seeking out person-centered thinking training, such as Florida International University, with their FIU Embrace Center for Advancing Inclusive Communities. The FIU Embrace program presents a model that other universities can emulate. The FIU website states that the Embrace Program “empowers each differently-abled person to live at their fullest potential through research-based and innovative programming, community engagement and professional skills development.”

At the same time, Reagan says part of person-centered thinking training is “just really recognizing that at the same time that all those typical [college] things are happening, all of the same challenges that they had before they entered college are still there, and they have to be addressed.”

Adding the person-centered thinking approach to university programs ensures post-secondary educational equity for people with IDD, meaning not only do people with IDD have the opportunity to attend college like other people, but they also get to receive the same college experience.

Lavallee began his career at Spaulding Academy & Family Services in 1999 as a member of the Residential team while an undergraduate student at Colby-Sawyer College. He then held various positions within Spaulding Academy including Paraeducator, Special Education teacher, and Special Education Coordinator. He most recently served as Assistant Director of Special Education.

He was awarded the 2011 State of New Hampshire Division for Children, Youth and Families and Division of Juvenile Justice Services Exemplary Leadership and Service Award and was a 2006 inductee of the Gilford High School Athletic Hall of Fame for soccer and basketball.

Lavallee holds State of New Hampshire licensing in Special Education Administration, Special Education Teaching, and Early Childhood Special Education Teaching; a Master of Education degree in Special Education Administration from Plymouth State University; and a Bachelor of Science degree in Child Development from Colby-Sawyer College.
