Positive Product Design™

Positive Product Design with the Human Potential Index, which is currently the most complete measure of human potential, can measurably unlock human potential at scale through technology.

Fast Company announced today that Positive Product Design™ was selected as a finalist in the Wellness Category of their 2021 World Changing Ideas Awards.

Positive Product Design is a new method for creating positive technology that helps people realize their full potential. Originally developed by Courtney Bigony (MAPP) at 15Five, Positive Product Design helps businesses be a force for good by combining the leveraged impact of technology with the latest science of thriving and human needs.

“The problem of negative technology has lacked a true solution until now. Positive Product Design changes the relationship between technology and the people who use it,” explains creator, Courtney Bigony. “Positive Product Design with the Human Potential Index, which is currently the most complete measure of human potential, can measurably unlock human potential at scale through technology.”

Now in its fifth year, Fast Company’s World Changing Ideas Awards honor the businesses, policies, projects, and concepts that are actively engaged and deeply committed to pursuing innovation when it comes to solving health and climate crises, social injustice, or economic inequality. A panel of eminent Fast Company editors and reporters selected winners and finalists from a pool of more than 4,000 entries across transportation, education, food, wellness, technology, and more.

“There is no question our society and planet are facing deeply troubling times. So, it’s important to recognize organizations that are using their ingenuity, impact, design, scalability, and passion to solve these problems,” says Stephanie Mehta, editor-in-chief of Fast Company. “Our journalists, under the leadership of senior editor Morgan Clendaniel, have discovered some of the most groundbreaking projects that have launched since the start of 2020.”

“Science shows that people need to feel psychologically safe and secure,” explains Bigony. “They need to experience autonomy, freedom, and a sense of control; they need to feel like they belong and feel seen and valued; they need to be aware of their unique strengths and leverage those strengths in all areas of life; they need to continually grow and develop, set intrinsically motivated goals, and make progress on meaningful work; they need to feel their life has purpose and that they contribute to something greater than the self. Positive Product Design brings this science to life through technology and helps tech designers build products that are for the greater good.”

The Human Potential Index, developed alongside leading self-actualization scientist, Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, will be completely free to the public this year and will help tech creators put Positive Product Design into action. Used together, Positive Product Design and HPI will allow Silicon Valley tech companies to co-create the modern human potential movement and unlock human potential at scale through technology.

Recovery Network of Programs Announces Two New Divisions

RNP’s New Logo

“Both CCIH and CRI exemplify Recovery Network of Programs’ long history and deep commitment of restoring health and healing for individuals and communities.” – Jennifer Kolakowski, CEO

Recovery Network of Programs, Inc. (RNP), a non-profit social service agency, has recently added two innovative programs—the Community Center for Integrated Health (CCIH) and the Community Response Initiative (CRI)—into its comprehensive network of care. The new programs greatly expand access and provide essential physical, mental, and emotional support to individuals living in Fairfield County.

As a comprehensive system providing critical treatment and support services to individuals living with mental health and substance use disorders, RNP’s new CCIH and CRI programs allow the organization to expand its reach and impact by providing essential services and care to both urban and suburban communities.

The Community Center for Integrated Health (CCIH) is the new centralized hub of RNP, created to provide easy, seamless access to all of RNP’s twenty-four programs, as well as its partner agencies. CCIH collaborates with other organizations in the community, including The Child and Family Guidance Center, OPTIMUS Health Care, and Greater Bridgeport Community Mental Health Center, to deliver enhanced, integrated services to children, adults, and families.

The Community Response Initiative (CRI) marks an innovative collaboration between RNP and the Stamford Police Department to address the needs of individuals living with mental health and substance use disorders. RNP employs a licensed clinical social worker who works directly out of the police department. This partnership allows RNP to meet the behavioral healthcare needs of individuals within the Stamford community.

“Both CCIH and CRI exemplify Recovery Network of Programs’ long history and deep commitment of restoring health and healing for individuals and communities,” said Jennifer Kolakowski, LCSW, CCDP-D, MATS, and CEO of RNP. “As a result of our extended network of care, dedicated staff, and generous donors and volunteers, we are now able to provide critical support to more communities and community members than ever before.”

In addition to launching two new programs, RNP recently rebranded to modernize and enhance its look and feel. Together with South Norwalk-based marketing agency Hatch 130 and its philanthropic Hatch Initiative program, RNP has debuted its new brand logo. The design team at Hatch wanted to mimic the tranquil and inviting environment of RNP, modifying the organization’s blue and green color scheme and incorporating varying shades to represent both diversity and collaboration. The leaf-like icon signifies movement and growth, symbolic of our ever-evolving nature as humans. RNP and Hatch will continue working together, redesigning the RNP website and creating a more purposeful digital experience for its clients and visitors.

meridian senior living logo

The Meridian Virtual Resource Series is delivering life changing information to a growing audience as these unprecedented times are thrusting many adult children into the role of caregiver to their aging parents.

For 2021, National Senior Housing Operator Meridian Senior Living has launched the Meridian Virtual Resource Series, a presentation series dedicated to providing invaluable, relevant information to family members and seniors as they navigate the journey of life. The series consists of quarterly virtual presentations with wide ranging topics delivered by author and subject experts. These sessions cover topics including role reversal, surviving as an Alzheimer’s caregiver, brain health, and embracing change. With foundations of success gained from the first presentation, Meridian resumes the momentum of the series by offering subsequent sessions that are free and open to the public.

“The Meridian Virtual Resource Series is delivering life changing information to a growing audience as these unprecedented times are thrusting many adult children into the role of caregiver to their aging parents,” said Sue Johnston, VP Program Development, Meridian Senior Living. “We are thrilled to offer practical and impactful resources to adult children who face caretaking challenges that have been intensified by COVID-19.”

The first presentation in the series, held in January 2021, focused on role reversal. Serving the needs of family caregivers who are overwhelmed with daily challenges in providing care to their aging parents, award winning author Iris Waichler presented coping strategies in the first session of the series. Many of the strategies presented are featured in Ms. Waichler’s comprehensive guide “Role Reversal: How to Take Care of Yourself and Your Aging Parents”. During the presentation, over eighty-five participants gained information about topics such as estate planning, emotional support, building a support network, and finding the most suitable level of care for your loved one.

Caregivers can register now for the upcoming presentation: My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver taking place on May 18th at 6:00PM ET. Author and former Wisconsin Governor Martin Schreiber will present sage advice to those taking on the caregiver’s role based on his personal experience taking care of his wife with Alzheimer’s as outlined in his book “My Two Elaines: Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer’s Caregiver”. Mr. Schreiber will share how having patience, flexibility, and a sense of fun can help those who have been unpredictably flung into the role of caregiver. Advocating for Alzheimer’s caregivers, Schreiber has traveled to twenty-three states to provide support to families and healthcare providers in understanding the importance of counseling and other resources to de-stigmatize the disease, reduce stress, and alleviate guilt. Interested participants can learn more about this virtual presentation and register to attend by contacting a Meridian Senior Living community near you.

Future presentations include topics on Brain Health and Embracing Change. On July 20th at 6:30PM ET, Dr. Paul Nussbaum will present: “Brain Health: Making a Difference Right Now”. Dr. Nussbaum is board-certified in Clinical Psychology and Geropsychology with a specialization in Neuropsychology. With 30 years’ experience caring for persons with dementia, Dr Nussbaum is the Founder and President of Brain Health Center, Inc. and has presented his views on Brain Health to the United Nations, National Press Club, Mensa, Sirius Radio and CSPAN. All presentations in the Meridian Virtual Resource Series are open and free to the public with registration.

Two Perceptions Are Better Than One

Self-awareness allows us to understand what we want and need; other-awareness allows us to understand what other people want and need.

Life is much easier to navigate when we have a good understanding of our desires, needs, values, and motivations, as well as other people’s.

Having both self-awareness and social perceptiveness allows you to manage yourself, manage your life, and manage your relationships much more productively.

Perceptiveness is like a superpower. Imagine knowing when someone is telling a boldfaced lie based solely on body language, or that a person is untrustworthy just by the “vibes” he or she gives off. Equally amazing is when that sharp insight is turned within – like people who have eerily accurate gut instincts, or who are so strongly connected to their inner self that they can turn off their body’s stress signals with just a few deep breaths. According to research conducted by PsychTests.com, people who possess both self and other-awareness are at a major social, emotional, and psychological advantage. However, even just developing one type – specifically, self-awareness – can be beneficial.

Analyzing data collected from 12,259 people who took the Emotional Intelligence Test, PsychTests’ researchers divided subjects into three groups:

> People who have a good understanding of human nature and of themselves (Self & Other-Aware group)

> People who have a good understanding of themselves, but not of other people (Self-Aware group)

> People who have a good understanding of others, but who don’t possess internal insight (Other-Aware group).

Here is how the three groups compare on various emotional intelligence competencies: (Scores range on a scale from 0 to 100)

“Having both self-awareness and social perceptiveness allows you to manage yourself, manage your life, and manage your relationships much more productively,” explains Dr. Ilona Jerabek, president of PsychTests. “You’re better able to regulate your emotions, manage stress, achieve goals, and deal harmoniously with other people, which boosts life and relationship satisfaction. However, what’s clear from our study is that just having self-awareness alone is generally fine, but it would be good to use that insight to better understand other people.”

“The nagging question is, why don’t people with strong other-awareness turn that sharp insight inwards? We believe it’s because it’s a lot harder to deal with your own emotional baggage than other people’s. Looking inwards means facing your fears, dealing with past hurts, and letting go of regret and guilt…and that’s a lot more challenging than dealing with second-hand emotion. So a lot of people distance themselves from their feelings, and look at any emotional situation with cool detachment – but that clearly comes at a cost. Self-awareness is not just about knowing your likes and dislikes. It’s about understanding what motivates you and using that knowledge to achieve your goals, why someone upsets you, why you failed at something and what it taught you, what your strengths are, and what you need to work on. If you are not self-aware, you don’t truly understand yourself and what you need in order to be happy.”

A Journey from Abuser to Advocate” is a heartwarming story of mental and emotional readjustment that lead to a life of healing

News Image

W.E. Commodore, an avid researcher of domestic violence and history and a lecturer to inmates who have suffered with violence, has completed his new book “Transformation: A Journey from Abuser to Advocate”: an emotional and powerful story of overcoming the environmental factors that lead to mental and emotional health or turmoil.

Commodore writes, “My stepfather answered the doorbell, and when he heard my father say, ‘You can have your son back,’ he tried to reason with my father but to no avail. There was no explanation given for such a drastic 180-degree about-face. I brought my clothes and other belongings acquired in the short time that I had lived with my father up to my bedroom. As I moved back in, I realized that I was back unprotected again. My father was gone, and my mother and stepfather felt betrayed by my act of independence and had their way of reinforcing their parental authority over me. My experience living with my father lasted only a few months, but it disrupted my junior year of high school. I fell behind in my grades, so I was not able to compete in track and field, and even though no one on the team said anything, I knew I’d let them down. My friends saw my experience but never commented on my situation.”

Published by Page Publishing, W.E. Commodore’s insightful tale takes the reader inside the mind of a child born into social and cultural conditions that shaped the emotions and behaviors leading up to a self-destructive personality.

With the journey to mental and emotional healing, it displays a fusion of teachings and principles that transforms one’s own spiritual nature.

Readers who wish to experience this inspiring work can purchase “Transformation: A Journey from Abuser to Advocate” at bookstores everywhere, or online at the Apple iTunes Store, Amazon, Google Play, or Barnes and Noble.

New Study Shows Promising Cognitive Gains in Students with Attention & Developmental Challenges

These studies are especially meaningful because the kids and parents who are navigating attention and developmental challenges want better options — not just more coping mechanisms.

New research, in collaboration with Cambridge Brain Sciences, found that children who completed the Brain Balance Program® saw significant overall improvements in cognition across all cognitive tasks measured, with the greatest changes seen on tasks of memory, reasoning, verbal ability, and concentration.

The study examined the effect of the Brain Balance Program® on the cognitive performance of children and adolescents with developmental and attention challenges. The findings support the role of the Brain Balance Program as an effective option to enhance aspects of cognitive performance for kids and teens with ADHD symptoms.(1)

“It is impressive and exciting that the children who completed this program demonstrated such significant improvement across a broad range of cognitive tasks,” says Dr. Wild, a research scientist from the Brain and Mind Institute at Western University in London, Canada, and lead statistician on the study.

The results of this research are consistent with another recent study, conducted by Harvard University’s McLean Hospital, which found that the Brain Balance Program was as effective as low-dose stimulant medication in improving attention and behavior.(2)

“There is a growing body of evidence supporting Brain Balance’s holistic, integrative approach to drive cognitive and developmental improvements,” says Dr. Rebecca Jackson, Brain Balance’s vice president of programs and outcomes.

“These studies are especially meaningful because the kids and parents who are navigating attention and developmental challenges want better options — not just more coping mechanisms. The findings support the role of the Brain Balance Program as an effective option to significantly improve aspects of cognitive performance for kids and teens with developmental and attentional issues.”

ATTENTION & LEARNING CHALLENGES IN THE U.S.

ADHD is a condition affecting nearly 10% of children and adolescents, creating challenges and disruptions in many areas of life including learning. 62% of children with ADHD are taking stimulant medication to help manage their symptoms.(3) While medications can help to manage many of the symptoms attributed to ADHD, there can still be underlying cognitive challenges in important areas such as memory, focus and reasoning — struggles that have been linked to weak connections across different regions in the brain.(4)

BRAIN BALANCE AS A SUPPORTING OR ALTERNATIVE OPTION TO MEDICATION

Extensive scientific research demonstrates that the brain can change, creating an opportunity for improvement. Brain Balance has applied this research to develop a program that focuses on strengthening the foundation of development and brain connectivity, rather than masking symptoms or coping with them for life. The program incorporates a unique combination of physical, sensory, and cognitive activities that can help improve our ability to complete cognitive tasks and enhance executive functioning.

ABOUT BRAIN BALANCE

Brain Balance offers a personalized, drug-free program helping individuals improve focus, behavior, social skills, anxiety, and academic performance. The program takes an integrative approach to strengthening brain connectivity through sensory engagement, physical development, academics, and nutrition. Over the past decade and across 86 locations, this unique and effective program has helped more than 45,000 families create a brighter path for their future. nQ Medical, a Digital Biomarker Discovery Platform, Unveils Latest COBRE Clinical Trial Results in Cognitive Impairment Across the AD Spectrum at AAN 2021 Annual Meeting

nQ Medical's results, Alzheimer’s Disease Spectrum COBRE TRIAL at Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health

nQ Medical’s results, Alzheimer’s Disease Spectrum COBRE TRIAL at Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health

Dr. Miller, Dir of Neuropsychology, Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, quoted Leurent and Ehlers, concluding that “the future vision is one where classically slow, subjective, and data-poor assessments of cognition are replaced by fast, objective, and data-rich digital assessments”

nQ Medical is proud to be a member of the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) 2021 Industry Roundtable and to Sponsor the 2021 AAN Annual Meeting held next week. During the Industry Therapeutic Update at AAN, nQ will be revealing the latest data and compelling highlights from its study, conducted at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health, Las Vegas. The nQ COBRE “Validation of passive typing monitoring as an indicator of cognitive impairment in the AD spectrum” is a Phase II, Proof of Concept study. It set out to answer the question: Can a Machine Learning (ML) model derived from keystroke dynamics aid in the assessment of individuals along the AD disease spectrum? The preliminary study results indicate that nQ Medical’s ML model derived from passive monitoring of keystroke dynamics can accurately classify individuals based on cognitive status.

Alzheimer’s disease is a neurodegenerative disorder that begins with subtle cognitive symptoms (typically short-term memory loss) invariably progressing over the course of years to decades to dementia, functional impairment, and death. Affecting more than 5 million people in the United States, it is the most common neurodegenerative disease. Advancing age is the strongest risk factor for developing the disease. This means that every living person over the age of 65 is at risk.

The economic and societal burden that Alzheimer’s disease imposes represents an emerging public health crisis for the United States, and more broadly, the developing world (where the majority of new cases are expected to occur). There is an urgent need to identify individuals manifesting the initial symptoms of the disease. Identification of these individuals will allow for testing of new agents in clinical trials, permit modification of lifestyle factors that may impact disease course, and, perhaps, most importantly, represent a crucial time point to initiate treatment for Alzheimer’s disease (if and when new medications are discovered).

Although several diagnostic tests are available that can identify patients in the earliest stages of the disease, these tests are prohibitively expensive (amyloid PET) or invasive (spinal tap) and are not feasible for screening millions of at-risk individuals. New screening tools that are inexpensive, scalable, and minimally invasive are urgently needed in order to combat the looming Alzheimer’s disease epidemic.

Decades of research has confirmed that subtle errors on cognitive tasks can predict those who will progress from mild symptoms to Alzheimer’s dementia. At this time, these tests are expensive to analyze, time-consuming, and not widely available. Additionally, data is typically collected at discrete time points at a testing center, making it susceptible to the influences of extraneous factors (i.e. a poor night’s sleep, anxiety, a “bad day”, etc.). The ability to sample cognitive performance continuously and in the individual’s natural environment would represent a major achievement for the field.

Typing is a complex motor activity that has been linked to an individual’s cognitive, psychological, and emotional state. Univariate analysis of mechanical keyboard dynamics (in a small sample) has recently been shown to differentiate individuals with mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer’s disease from a normal control group. nQ Medical’s typing tool is a novel technology that utilizes machine learning to capture and analyze an individual’s typing performance on either a keyboard and/or a smartphone. Importantly, the nQ technology can capture data continuously, non-invasively, and in a person’s “natural” or everyday environment, thus, making it a very promising screening tool for early detection of Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr. Justin Miller, Director of Neuropsychology at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas, Nevada, quoted Leurent and Ehlers, concluding that “the future vision is one where classically slow, subjective, and data-poor assessments of cognition are replaced by fast, objective, and data-rich digital assessments”.
