There was no explanation given for such a drastic 180-degree about-face. I brought my clothes and other belongings acquired in the short time that I had lived with my father up to my bedroom. As I moved back in, I realized that I was back unprotected again. My father was gone, and my mother and stepfather felt betrayed by my act of independence and had their way of reinforcing their parental authority over me. My experience living with my father lasted only a few months, but it disrupted my junior year of high school. I fell behind in my grades, so I was not able to compete in track and field, and even though no one on the team said anything, I knew I’d let them down. My friends saw my experience but never commented on my situation.”
