San Diego Addiction Treatment Center Brings The Healing Power Of Music Into Recovery

Our music therapy program allows people to connect with their innermost feelings, and with those around them on a deeper level. That’s where true recovery comes from, honesty and authenticity.

Northbound Treatment Center, a rehab facility for addiction in San Diego, promotes music therapy to help individuals overcome addiction, effectively express themselves, and prepare for a sober future. The program highlights self-expression as an outlet for emotion and teaches participants how music can serve as an effective coping mechanism for those recovering from substance abuse.

Ryan Snodgrass, Clinical Director at Northbound, says this about music therapy as a supplemental form of addiction treatment, “Many individuals who abuse substances do so as a way of coping with big emotions. We believe music can be a powerful outlet for these emotions, and music therapy allows individuals to understand themselves, and their experiences, on a deeper level.”

Northbound’s music program is part of a wider treatment program that helps individuals understand their addictive tendencies, and develop skills to successfully overcome substance abuse. Music therapy teaches these skills through composing, listening, and discussing music and lyrics. Once per month, groups are brought to a recording studio where they are given the opportunity to record their own musical works.

“There is a level of honesty that is expressed in music that may not come out in one on one therapy or group discussions,” Snodgrass continues. “It is powerful to watch the healing that takes place when these individuals are able to be themselves. Music heals. Our music therapy program allows people to connect with their innermost feelings, and with those around them on a deeper level. That’s where true recovery comes from, honesty and authenticity.”

Music therapy programs are available in both inpatient and outpatient programs and provide opportunities for individuals to learn how to enjoy live music and shows in a sober community, and how to incorporate music into recovery once formal treatment has ended. For many patients, music therapy at Northbound provided the alternative form of healing needed for individuals to get sober and stay sober – for good.

Groundbreaking Machine Learning Algorithm Accurately Predicts Mental Health Crises

Koa Health reveals groundbreaking machine learning algorithm that accurately predicts mental health crises.

Koa Health reveals groundbreaking machine learning algorithm that accurately predicts mental health crises.

Prevention is widely seen as the holy grail of treating mental health problems. Using AI to predict mental health crises can enable timely and proactive instead of reactive interventions to mitigate or prevent mental health crises and truly help both patients and healthcare systems.

Koa Health, a leading global provider of digital mental healthcare solutions, and Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust, today announced the results of a groundbreaking machine learning algorithm that has accurately predicted mental health crises in a real-world NHS setting. The results of the study suggest that such technology could allow for early intervention and improve patient outcomes.

Koa Health developed a machine learning model that uses anonymised electronic health records to continuously monitor patients for risk of a mental health crisis. The model has been found to correctly predict more than half of the crises 28 days in advance, without a considerable false-positive rate. A following six-month study evaluated Koa Health’s algorithm’s use in clinical practice. In as many as 64% of cases, the model proved clinically valuable, either in terms of managing caseloads or mitigating the risk of crisis.

Results of the study come during Mental Health Awareness Month and follow the UK’s Mental Health Awareness Week which acknowledged the nearly one billion people worldwide who live with a mental disorder. With the global mental health emergency considerably exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, healthcare systems face a growing demand for mental health services and seek solutions to allow for preventative measures. Koa Health is exploring the incorporation of crisis prediction into its comprehensive mental health service as part of its aim to use technology to radically improve access to high-quality support for mental health. The next step is to validate the model in other health systems and to undertake the larger-scale studies that will be required to obtain regulatory approval.

Dr. Oliver Harrison, CEO of Koa Health says, “Working as an NHS psychiatrist, I saw too many people arrive in our services through the Accident and Emergency Department. By the time we saw them, they were usually very sick and had often experienced problems with their relationships, finances, employment, and housing. Putting the pieces back together was almost always expensive, time-consuming, and painful for the people involved. We were delighted to be chosen as a Wave 1 NHS Test Bed to partner with Birmingham and Solihull NHS Mental Health Foundation Trust. We shared a vision of moving from reactive care – driven by crisis – to proactive care – driven by prediction and prevention. We have delivered outstanding results in this trial and look forward to continuing the development work. We believe this is the future of mental healthcare in the UK and worldwide.”

Dr. Aleksandar Matic, Koa Health’s R&D Director says, ”Prevention is widely seen as the holy grail of treating mental health problems. Using AI to predict mental health crises can enable timely and proactive instead of reactive interventions to mitigate or prevent mental health crises and truly help both patients and healthcare systems. We were so excited when the results from the clinical implementation of our model suggested that our predictions may have indeed prevented more serious symptoms. Providing the right intervention at the right time sits at the core of Koa’s approach.”

To learn more, read the study in Nature Medicine.

About the Study

The study – the results of which have now been published in the journal Nature Medicine – was conducted by Koa Health using anonymised electronic health record data* collected over seven years (2012–2018) from 17,122 patients. Using the data, Koa Health was able to develop a unique machine learning algorithm which it used to evaluate how accurately it could continuously predict the risk of a mental health crisis (defined as “the onset of severe symptoms that require substantial healthcare resources”) over a 28 day period.

Koa Health went on to evaluate the crisis prediction algorithm in clinical practice from November 2018 to May 2019. The crisis predictions were delivered on a biweekly basis to 60 clinicians, who then evaluated whether and how such predictions helped them manage caseload priorities and mitigate the risk of crisis. Those clinicians reported the predictions to be clinically valuable in 64% of cases.

*The anonymised data remained on the Trust’s servers, which are based in Birmingham at BSMHFT headquarters, and all analysis was completed there. All data sharing between companies was bound by EU, UK and Spanish Data Protection Laws, as well as legal contracts and governance processes. The Health Research Authority (HRA) approved the study and ensured that all NHS research governance requirements were met and that patients and public interests were protected.

iFoster Releases The Voice of the Foster Care Community Report

“Each individual youth in foster care is alone. Our families may have abused us, been unable to take care of us, or abandoned us, but we still matter. I’m alone, but I still want to be a part of this world, so please take us into account and give us an actual fighting chance.” Foster Youth

iFoster, a national 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to ensure that every child growing up outside of their biological home has the resources and opportunities they need to become successful, has released The Voice of the Foster Care Community Report at http://www.VoiceofFosterCare.org. The Report is the largest-ever opinion survey of people inside the foster care system.

Congress established May as National Foster Care Month in 2021 as an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges of children in the foster care system, and for advocates to encourage Congress to implement policies to improve the lives of these children.

“Each individual youth in foster care is alone. We have to worry about paperwork, we have to worry about food, we have to worry about school expenses, we have to worry about our future. I just want to go to college and get an education. … I’d like to tell the Biden administration that I and many other foster youth need support. Our families may have abused us, been unable to take care of us, or abandoned us, but we still matter. We want the ability to have hopeful futures, so please support us in our dreams. I want to have to stop worrying about court and paperwork. I want to feel secure, even if I don’t have a family. I’m alone, but I still want to be a part of this world, so please take us into account and give us an actual fighting chance.” – Currently in Foster Care Youth, California, From the Voice of the Foster Care Community Report.

The report, sponsored by the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, will be published annually. The May 2022 Report includes responses from 2,411 people in the iFoster network, including 1,049 transition-age foster youth (ages 16 to 24), 1,134 caregivers, and 228 workers in 49 states and the District of Columbia. The Report marks the first time that the voice of youth in foster care, their caregivers, both families and institutions, and people working within the system, have spoken in such detail to policymakers. The survey for the May 2023 Report is now live at http://www.VoiceofFosterCare.org.

Angela LoBue, Senior Program Officer at the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, said: “We are proud to support iFoster’s work lifting up voices within the foster care community. As the largest national online community in foster care, iFoster is uniquely positioned to tap into the lived experiences of the entire foster care community to provide real-time insights into the issues that need to be addressed to help young people in the foster care system achieve their full potential.”

iFoster is using the report as the basis for crosswalk analysis, comparing legislative agendas and proposed budgets to the clear mandates for change articulated by the foster care community. Starting in May with the release of the report, the foster care community will engage with taxpayers in every state to reach out to their elected officials via http://www.voiceoffostercare.org to ensure the voices of those most impacted by the foster care system are heard.

Key Findings from the report:

The System Fails to Prioritize Child Well-Being.

FACT: Children in foster care experience lifelong challenges not only from the trauma of maltreatment but also from their time in the child welfare system.

FINDINGS: Mental and physical health problems, food and housing insecurity, education, and substance use are often highlighted as priority needs. The system is focused on paperwork, policies, and procedures and does not prioritize the well-being of children and youth.

Structural Inequities Drive Child Welfare Involvement.

FACT: Minority and vulnerable communities are overrepresented within the foster care system.

FINDINGS: Children of color and LGBTQ+ youth face racism and discrimination, which affects their entrance to and exit from the child welfare system. Poverty intersects with discrimination based on race, ethnicity, and sexual identity, making poor youth of color and sexual or gender minority youth particularly vulnerable to child welfare involvement.

Providing a Stable, Permanent Family Needs to be a Priority.

FACT: The longer children are in the child welfare system, the worse their short- and long-term outcomes are compared to children not involved in the system.

FINDINGS: Greater efforts are needed to support biological parents prior to the removal of children and to help them regain their children as soon as possible. Though once children are removed, caregivers and workers and advocates identify the need to prioritize the well-being of the child versus the needs of the parents as the source for delayed termination of parental rights permanency.

Resource Scarcity and Inequity is Rampant throughout the System.

FACT: The child welfare system is under resourced and underfunded and this has dire consequences for children.

FINDINGS: Youth need more equitable access to the resources that do exist and more services as they age out of care without a family, services, like rental assistance, employment, and money for daily expenses, and broad support for achieving individual goals like a high school diploma and a college degree. There is consensus that youth deserve more time to achieve their goals. An important oversight is the unique needs of caregivers, as well as workers and advocates are often dismissed.

Teaching Youth Self-Sufficiency Must be a Priority.

FACT: Youth who age out of foster care are more likely to experience homelessness, as well as significant health disparities.

FINDINGS: Overall, transition-age foster youth fear for their futures because they feel ill prepared and under resourced to face emancipation in an evolving world. And caregivers worry they won’t have the stamina and financial stability to continue to care. The foster care community would like to see the child welfare system held accountable for, and adequately funded and supported to ensure all transition-age youth are prepared for independence.

Those Who Live and Work in the Child Welfare System Should have a say in its Functioning.

FACT: Current and former foster care youth are not part of the decisions-making process that impacts their lives.

FINDINGS: The community feels strongly they should have input into the decisions and policies that impact their ability to raise foster children. Both current and former foster care youth identified free or low-cost housing (98%), issues of homelessness (96%), and job training and employment opportunities (93%) as the main priorities for the Biden administration. Caregivers identified it was essential to ensure that children and youth get the services they are eligible for. They called for improvements in mental health and substance use treatment supports and increasing foster care and kinship care stipends. Workers and advocates identified issues of eligibility, improved mental health and substance abuse treatment, and increased child maltreatment prevention. In addition to these services, there was overwhelming consensus that Trauma-informed training should be mandatory for all foster parents and professionals working with foster youth.

A Delicate Balance, Emphasizing the Importance of Mental Health and Well Being

News Image

“Our lives and how we project ourselves are a balancing act and in difficult times our mental health has never felt more vulnerable. A Delicate Balance expresses the reality, truth and hope in this shared struggle and hopefully encourages a sense of normalcy,” says gallery owner Christine O’Donnell.

Beacon Gallery is pleased to present A Delicate Balance, a group show featuring artists Domenic Esposito, Nicci Sevier-Vuyk, and Sharon Whitham, which runs June 3-July 17, 2022. The premise of the show focuses on the challenges that everyone faces – mentally, emotionally and even physically – especially in such difficult or uncertain times as we are experiencing now, and seeks to highlight the commonality in this struggle.

The works to be showcased are composed in three different media with very diverse approaches. Yet, together, these two and three-dimensional works and installations create a shared strength in message, representing the layers and aspects which may be found within all of us in shaping the reality of our human fragility.

“Our lives and how we project ourselves are often a balancing act. On the outside it may be all flowers, bright colors and sweetness, but our internal reality may be a very different story,” notes curator and gallery owner Christine O’Donnell. “In these difficult times, our mental health has never felt more vulnerable or precarious, and as such, A Delicate Balance serves to recognize and express the reality, truth and hope in this individual and collective struggle and hopefully encourage a sense of normalcy.”

Domenic Esposito’s Listen, a triptych featuring his iconic hooded figure in bronze, facing a series of individuals in three gothic panels, is evocative of current events. Esposito is an artist and social activist whose work reflects upon our innermost selves, the turmoil and struggle often experienced internally. Through both his series of hooded figures and his various allusions to addiction, Esposito plumbs the depths of human desperation and fragility, while underscoring the aspect of suffering.

On the other end of the spectrum, Nicci Sevier-Vuyk’s paintings and Sharon Whitham’s monoprints each represent the ways in which we seek to cover up these darker moments. Always a balancing act, rocks are assembled in unpredictable manners, just barely balanced on each other in a most precarious fashion. The cool, relaxing colors sit in opposition to the tension such assemblages represent in their unnatural arrangement. With a human hand perhaps just out of sight, one is left to wonder about the metaphorical balancing act, depicted in varying bursts of color. These flashes of beauty direct our attention not only to what is attractive in our own existences, but also to the overwhelming number of pieces that are anything but.

Beacon Gallery is proud to present this unique collection of work which is meant to inspire self-reflection, prompting audiences to look inward at their own vulnerabilities and importantly, encourage a willingness to recognize with empathy how much of our private inner worlds we actually share with others.

About the Artists

Domenic Esposito is a Massachusetts based artist and social activist. A graduate of Northeastern University, he was also trained in art from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Stonybrook Fine Arts, Artist Asylum and Prospect Hill Forge, where he developed his metalwork skills. In 2018, he achieved national attention through the massive opioid spoon sculptures he placed on the doorsteps of the FDA and major pharmaceutical giants, and founded the Opioid Spoon Project, a 501(c)(3) to serve as a solution-based platform in addressing the opioid crisis.

Domenic’s work includes sculptures, paintings, commissions and public art installations, and has been privately collected and exhibited in a range of galleries and art fairs across the U.S., including Artexpo New York, Canvas Fine Arts, Boston; Piano Craft Gallery, Boston; Insight Artspace, NY; Scope, NYC; Art Palm Beach; and SOFA Chicago Art Fair, among others. To learn more follow on Facebook and Instagram.

Nicci Sevier-Vuyk is an American artist known for her colorful, realistic acrylic paintings of iconic objects in American culture. Her work is fueled by her interest in the conflict between appearance, its meaning in culture, and substance. The stereotypes of beauty and playful sense of irony are main themes in her paintings. Nicci has painted throughout her life and after a career as a pediatric nurse practitioner she began her art practice full-time. She has attended The Glassell School of Art in Houston, but is, for the most part, a self-taught artist. Nicci has had two solo exhibitions and has been included in many juried exhibitions. She has twice been featured on The Jealous Curator’s blog. Born in northern California, Nicci creates her work and has made her home in Southborough, Massachusetts.

Nicci shares: “My work is a reflection of the stereotypes surrounding beauty and appearance. The chrysanthemum portraits I create are an exploration of the fascinating beauty that lies outside the boundaries of society’s definition of what is desirable. The delight of asymmetry, irregular form, and playful use of color create an unexpected floral painting. The minimalist and representational style of my work encourages an iconic feeling about the chrysanthemum, further magnifying what it means to us as individuals and as a society.” To learn more follow on Facebook and Instagram.

Sharon Whitham is a printmaker and mixed-media artist. She spends part of each year working out of her studio in the Boston area, living on an island off the coast of Maine, and creating art in Mexico. Her work is inspired by both nature and culture, focused on themes of balance, loss and change, and our connections to each other and the natural world. She is particularly interested in the idea of balance in its many forms: physical; spiritual; cultural; juggling the demands of contemporary life; and navigating a path through a very complex world. Her work is also influenced by the current crises around immigration, climate change, tolerance, equality, and justice.

Sharon is inspired by the beauty, resilience and changes that occur in the natural world, and most especially the paradox of permanence/impermanence. She is drawn to the organic shapes, patterns and colors in nature, particularly rocks, feathers, leaves and water. Much of her work uses the imagery of cairns, which are balanced mounds of stones, typically built by fellow travelers from rocks found in the landscape. They are carefully placed and balanced to mark a trail or path to help guide others. Sharon sees cairns as a way to connect to nature, history and those that have traveled before us in life. Riverside Insights and Educator Impact Partner to Improve Student Well-being and Enrich School Cultures

We are confident that the addition of the Educator Impact platform to Riverside’s portfolio of assessment tools and insights will provide educators with a more robust understanding of each child – a first of its kind in Ed Tech.

Riverside Insights®, a leading developer of research-based assessments and analytics, today announced a new partnership with Educator Impact, an international, Australian-based Ed Tech company dedicated to enriching school cultures through student and staff well-being “pulse checks.” Educator Impact’s Pulse product, on its easy-to-use platform, provides key insights to help educational leaders regularly gauge the well-being of students and staff, inform SEL strategies and school wellness programs, and enhance overall school health.

Unlike other observational well-being tools, ei Pulse quickly gathers and amplifies student and teacher voices and empowers educators with direct feedback to help personalize connections, shape classroom climates, and strengthen school communities.

“Riverside Insights’ partnership with Educator Impact further illustrates our commitment to support the whole child and their ‘Limitless Learning’ by empowering them to unlock their full potential” said CEO, Rajib Roy, Riverside Insights. “We know that students learn best when they feel safe, supported, and loved. These contextual student well-being insights, paired with student ability and achievement measures, empower teachers with a 360-degree view of students so they can serve their classroom’s needs. Riverside Insights will now be able to support educators with a more comprehensive set of insights to accelerate student learning.”

With this agreement, schools licensing the ei Pulse platform can create a safe channel for students and staff to voice their needs. ei Pulse asks students six, research-backed questions, starting with “How are you feeling today?,” enabling educators to quickly capture a snapshot of student well-being and engagement. Each “pulse check-in” takes less than 60-seconds but provides real-time data that empowers school leaders and teachers with an honest understanding of how students are feeling.

As schools continue to face challenges with staff retention, ei Pulse offers an anonymous channel for teachers to provide candid feedback that helps administrators support their staff and work together to shape a healthy learning culture. This tool is of particular importance now, as about 40% of those working in K-12 education have considered changing jobs because of anxiety, stress, depression and burnout resulting from the pandemic, the National Education Association reported.

With the addition of ei Pulse, Riverside Insights now offers a holistic set of tools to help educators understand the full picture of each student, with insights into a student’s potential, performance, progress, and overall well-being. Riverside’s industry-leading ability measure, (CogAT®), coupled with its specialized assessments for Math and Reading performance (IowaFlex, Iowa Algebra Aptitude Test (IAAT) and Gates-MacGinitie Reading Test® (GMRT)), and its quick tools to support progress monitoring and intervention (easyCBM and ESGI) create a comprehensive assessment portfolio that can unlock every student’s potential through Limitless Learning.

“We applaud Riverside Insights for integrating the ability to rapidly and regularly check in on each student in a way that provides the most comfort, privacy and security to the child,” said Nabil Shaheen, CEO, Educator Impact. “We are confident that the addition of the Educator Impact platform to Riverside’s portfolio of assessment tools and insights will provide educators with a more robust understanding of each child – a first of its kind in Ed Tech.”
