Groundbreaking Research Identifies Opportunities to Increase Educational Equity in Israel

At reGeneration Education, we believe that more peaceful childhoods promote a culture of peace.

reGeneration’s report charts a visionary path forward by uniting parents and teachers who are Palestinian citizens of Israel and Jewish Israelis to work together to close barriers to trauma-informed education.

Today, reGeneration Education announced the results of its 21-month study of systemic barriers that prevent children in Israel from accessing trauma-informed early childhood and elementary education. The authors of reGeneration’s study, “Closing the Gap: Increasing Access to Trauma-Informed Education for PCI/Arab Communities in Israel Through Waldorf Education,” identified Israeli governmental policies and societal phenomena that prevent trauma-informed Waldorf kindergartens and schools from opening in communities where Palestinian citizens of Israel (PCI) live. At a time when Israel’s new governing coalition has signaled receptivity to positive reform, reGeneration’s report charts a visionary path forward by uniting parents and teachers who are Palestinian citizens of Israel and Jewish Israelis to work together to close barriers to trauma-informed education.

Research shows that trauma-informed education can play a key role in supporting children’s healthy development in a diverse society. While any Israeli child may experience real hardships, a confluence of stressors merges in uniquely damaging ways for children who are Palestinian citizens of Israel. These societal stressors or Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) — localized violence, communal poverty, regional instability, acculturation, and discrimination — affect the everyday mental state of children who are Palestinian citizens of Israel and, if left unaddressed, can hinder their long-term intellectual, emotional and physical development and later participation in society. Trauma-informed education helps inoculate the stress experienced by all Israeli children and lays the foundation for a peaceful future.

“Children who are Palestinian citizens of Israel deserve an education that frees their spirit, honors their heritage, and allows them to realize their full potential. Trauma-informed Waldorf education empowers students to create a culture of possibility that transforms their community and the world at large so that all children and families may thrive,” said Muneer Waheed, Board of Directors at reGeneration Education. “reGeneration’s research illuminates the challenges that Palestinian citizens of Israel face when trying to access healing trauma-informed Waldorf education. It is incumbent on all of us who want to see a peaceful future in the Holy Land to support the Muslim, Christian, and Jewish parents and teachers working together for peace through trauma-informed education.”

reGeneration Education’s research sought to understand the cause of the trauma-informed Waldorf school movement’s struggle to scale in communities where Palestinian citizens of Israel live. Throughout its 21-month study, reGeneration identified five key systemic obstacles preventing its expansion, affecting every stage of an educational institution’s growth: systemic and individual governmental biases; school fundraising in the face of communal poverty; teacher hiring difficulties caused by anti-Arab employment discrimination in other fields; inaccessible and culturally irrelevant teacher training; and widespread teacher burnout.

“Trauma-informed education bolsters schools with proactive strategies to empower children to meet their own needs for learning in healthy ways. Further, trauma-informed education is underpinned with ethics of equity, care, and unconditional positive regard for all members of the school community. The holistic Waldorf approach to learning has the potential to be highly valuable for trauma-affected children, especially those growing up in crisis zones,” said Dr. Tom Brunzell, M.S, Ed.M., Ph.D., Honorary Fellow at the University of Melbourne, and Director of Education at Berry Street Victoria.

While many pedagogical approaches to trauma-informed education are used worldwide, the most widely embraced system in Israel is Waldorf education. Over 200 Hebrew Waldorf kindergartens, elementary schools, and high schools support Jewish Israeli families, making it the country’s most popular trauma-informed secular school movement. Despite significant and long-expressed interest from parents who are Palestinian citizens of Israel, the number of Arab Waldorf institutions has not kept pace with the rising demand. Less than three kindergartens and only one trauma-informed Waldorf school serve Palestinian citizens of Israel in Israel. Children who are Palestinian citizens of Israel, who have predominantly high exposure to ACEs, therefore cannot adequately engage with the benefits of trauma-informed education.

“At a time when there is such a need to change the status quo, we must find ways to reach across divides and build more bridges between Jews, Muslims, and Christians. As we outline in our research, trauma-informed education through Waldorf methods has a historical track record of both successfully lifting children in crisis zones up and building inclusive school communities of families that welcome diversity,” said Shepha Schneirsohn Vainstein, M.A. LMFT, President of reGeneration Education.

Grounded in the recommendations of its research participants, who are Palestinian citizens of Israel and Jewish Israelis, reGeneration’s report includes the Arab Waldorf Growth Platform, a roadmap for navigating the obstacles that impede the growth of trauma-informed education in communities where Palestinian citizens of Israel live. In an Israeli society shared between Jewish and Palestinian citizens, reGeneration Education’s Arab Waldorf Growth Platform unites both peoples to work together to implement strategies for positive change.

Ideal Option Opens Low-Barrier Addiction Medicine Clinic in Conway

Ideal Option, a national leader in evidence-based treatment for addiction to methamphetamine, fentanyl, heroin, alcohol and other substances, is now welcoming new patients in Conway. The new outpatient clinic, located at 1355 Dave Ward Dr, Ste 102, will provide evidence-based medication-assisted treatment led by an onsite provider.

According to a recent release from the Arkansas Department of Human Services, methamphetamine is currently Arkansas’s greatest drug threat.

“Since 2014, the number of methamphetamine overdose deaths has quadrupled,” said Arkansas State Drug Director Kirk Lane. The release goes on to state that by itself, methamphetamine use is dangerous enough, but mixing it with opioids drastically increases the risk of overdose and death.

Ideal Option data from 2021 show 44% of patients in Arkansas tested positive for multiple substances at enrollment, most commonly opioids and methamphetamine. The data also support the effectiveness of treatment. Among patients who remained in treatment with Ideal Option during 2021, urine drug testing shows:

  • 78% less methamphetamine use
  • 80% less total opioid use
  • 92% less fentanyl use
  • 93% less heroin use

The new clinic in Conway is Ideal Option’s sixth location in Arkansas and is opening at a time of desperate need for expanded access to evidence-based treatment from experienced and specialized providers. Ideal Option has been specializing in addiction medicine for 10 years and currently operates 76 clinics across 10 states.

“Since opening our first clinic in 2020, Ideal Option has already helped hundreds of individuals in Arkansas struggling with substance use disorder, and we are thrilled to expand to Conway,” said Aaron Bunch, community outreach coordinator for Arkansas. “We are excited to offer our services here and change lives for the better so that this great community can thrive.”

The new Ideal Option clinic in Conway is open Monday – Thursday, 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. and is located at 1355 Dave Ward Dr, Ste 102, Conway, AR 72034.

Most forms of insurance are accepted, including Medicare and Medicaid, and patients can typically get started on treatment for fentanyl, heroin, alcohol or other substances within 1-3 business days.

Patients can make an appointment by calling 1.877.522.1275 or visiting http://www.idealoption.com.

About Ideal Option

Headquartered in Kennewick, Washington, Ideal Option was founded in 2012 and has since helped more than 50,000 patients through a network of 77 office-based medication-assisted treatment (MAT) clinics across 10 states. In all the communities it serves, Ideal Option collaborates with existing stakeholders and providers to improve the continuum of care. Rose Health & MyAdvisor Extend Partnership With Yellow Ribbon Fund to Offer Free Mental Health Services To 200 Additional Wounded Veterans, Their Families & Caregivers

MyAdvisor began with our VetAdvisor program, focusing on how to best serve our military members, their families, and caregivers. Being able to give back to those that serve others through this collaboration with Rose Health & Yellow Ribbon Fund is a true hallmark of our mission” – Jennifer Christman

The powerful collaboration began six months ago and will now triple the number of individuals with access to a personalized mental health care journey which includes a concierge care team through a digital mobile app platform.

Rose Health, a digital mental health company, and MyAdvisor, a specialized holistic wellness division of technology company Three Wire Systems, LLC (Three Wire), partner together to provide 300 veterans with free, personalized mental health self-help resources and access to a concierge care team to the Yellow Ribbon Fund (YRF). The Yellow Ribbon Fund, headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland, is a veteran service organization serving wounded, ill, and injured post 9/11 service members and caregivers from every branch of the U.S military.

Monday, May 30th, marks Memorial Day, a federal holiday for mourning the U.S. military personnel who have died while serving in the armed forces. As this day approaches, the nation often re-examines the needs of the veteran population and how we can best support them in return for their service to our country. As such, the importance of fighting the stigma against mental health treatment, increasing access to support, and addressing the specific needs of veterans has never been more important.

This powerful collaboration will now provide 300 veterans, their families, and caregivers with access to mental health care resources and a concierge care team through its integrated mobile app platform. This evidence-based approach is powered by deep tech to help bring the right care to the right person at the right time. On the mobile app, users are empowered to take control of their mental health by submitting daily mood check-ins and journals which are analyzed by 7 in-house AI algorithms to determine a given user’s specific needs and concerns. Self-care and mental health support are then individualized through content tailored to their specific needs. This suite of curated content is available to them at any time and is continuously updated.

In addition, members receive access to the Rose Care Concierge Team, offering 24/7/365 support in 30 seconds or less with one phone call. This team, available through the Rose partnership with MyAdvisor, offers assistance in a wide variety of areas including navigational advocacy to help identify and coordinate care between internal and external veterans’ support resources, triage and crisis assessment, behavioral health and wellness, career and financial guidance, and life adjustment skills. In doing so, the Rose partnership with MyAdvisor grants access to care coordination support and removes mental health care hurdles to connect veterans with the right level of care at the right time through the Yellow Ribbon Fund.

Suicide prevention is among the top concerns for the veteran population in conjunction with combating the stigma that often prevents veterans from seeking mental health support. By providing free access to care and support, this collaborative effort will help address these specific concerns. In 2019, there were an average of 17.2 Veteran suicides per day; over half of those were among individuals who did not receive targeted support through the VHA. By increasing the number of avenues for veterans to access mental health services, Rose Health in partnership with MyAdvisor and The Yellow Ribbon Fund can specifically address the mental health stigma and help prevent suicide via long-term monitored care on the mobile app and in-the-moment support available through the Rose Care Concierge Team.

This demographic also faces an increased risk for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and suicide. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, as many as 20% of veterans suffer from PTSD and many veterans report elevated feelings of anxiety and depression. Through daily check-ins on the app, targeted resources specific to veterans and PTSD, and the close monitoring of their mental health status, the collaboration between Rose Health, MyAdvisor, and Yellow Ribbon Fund functions to better coordinate care and ultimately increase access to needed resources in a highly specific and tailored manner while minimizing the burden of care on caregivers.

“Our military families deserve the best possible care, and that’s why we’re proud to partner with organizations like Rose Health and MyAdvisor. These organizations provide top-level mental health resources to our veterans and their families. Through collaborations such as this, we can break down the stigma surrounding mental health and provide much-needed support to those who have served our country,” says Gina Harrow, Executive Director, Yellow Ribbon Fund.

“MyAdvisor began with our pioneer program VetAdvisor, focusing on how to best serve our military members, military families, and caregivers. Being able to continue to give back to those that serve others through this collaboration with Rose Health and Yellow Ribbon Fund is a true hallmark of our mission,” says Jennifer Christman, President, MyAdvisor/VetAdvisor.

“Rose Health is humbled to offer 200 additional veterans, their families, and caregivers access to our services at no cost. We will provide the necessary resources to help them address PTSD concerns, anxiety, and depression to improve their overall well-being. PTSD concerns are particularly important for many veterans, but the lack of provider appointment availability often prevents timely access to necessary PTSD treatment for veterans. The resources we provide and a 24/7/365 concierge care team can help these veterans receive the right care at the right time. We are able to lower the cost of care for veterans with PTSD, who typically endure health care costs 3.5 times higher than their peers without PTSD. In observance of Memorial Day, we are honored to now grant a total of 300 service members access to our comprehensive mental health platform through our partnership with MyAdvisor and the Yellow Ribbon Fund,” says Kavi Misri, CEO and Founder, of Rose Health.

About MyAdvisor, A Division of Three Wire Systems, LLC

Free Retreats For Montana Military, First Responders Through Mighty Oaks Foundation

Mighty Oaks Foundation

Mighty Oaks Foundation

Mighty Oaks Foundation is offering free retreats for Montana active military, veterans, first responders, and their spouses this year. Costs to attend the programs, held in California, Virginia, Texas, and Ohio, are covered by a grant from the Gianforte Family Foundation.

Mighty Oaks Foundation is offering free retreats for Montana active military, veterans, first responders, and their spouses this year. Costs to attend the programs, held in California, Virginia, Texas, and Ohio, are covered by a grant from the Gianforte Family Foundation.

The Men’s and Women’s Legacy retreats are peer-to-peer intensive programs designed to help Montana warriors overcome daily challenges and the long-term effects of trauma, including PTSD, so that they can live lives of purpose and leadership. Scheduling is flexible and based on individual needs. Mighty Oaks also offers programs in Aftercare, Military Resiliency, and a follow-up program for couples, Marriage Advance.

Mighty Oaks National Programs Director Branden Kunath says, “Our main goal is to help Montana vets. The COVID epidemic and recent withdrawals from Afghanistan spiked demand for our programs across the board. Suicide hotline numbers have increased to what we’ve never seen before.”

Mighty Oaks’ goals include reducing the suicide rate among warriors to zero, helping heal broken families, and decreasing divorce rates of veteran families. A September 2019 U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs report cites a suicide rate for veterans of 1.5 times the rate for non-veteran adults. With veterans comprising nearly 10 percent of the population, Montana has one of the highest numbers of veterans per capita among all U.S. states, second only to Alaska, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The faith-based retreats provide a non-clinical, confidential, open environment fostering camaraderie and fellowship. In addition to free programming, Mighty Oaks covers all meals, lodging, and travel costs. Participants come from all faiths and backgrounds.

Mighty Oaks founder and president Chad Robichaux is a former Force Recon Marine and Department of Defense contractor with eight deployments to Afghanistan. A medal of valor recipient, he has been involved in various high-profile advocacy efforts, including chairing a White House veterans’ coalition and helping recover more than 15,000 U.S. citizens and allies from Afghanistan, working with other military veterans through the Save Our Allies mission.

Mighty Oaks Program Manager Bill Coate of Bozeman speaks to the importance of the faith-based programs: “The ‘New Normal’ has unleashed a tsunami of mistrust on our country. Men have lost trust in almost every sector of society…. At Mighty Oaks, we offer the only true hope in life: a relationship with Jesus Christ.”
