Two Loma Linda University studies say smokers at higher risk for infectious disease

Researchers say the estimated 34 million adults in the United States who smoke may also be at greater risk of complications from COVID-19.

Before the pandemic, we saw tobacco use was associated with several infectious diseases including tuberculosis, HIV, and more. Understanding the correlation can aid in smoking cessation and preventative measures nationwide to slow down the spread of the deadly COIVD-19.

Researchers from Loma Linda University in recent years have conducted two studies in Southeast Asia showing that those who smoke are at greater risk of contracting infectious disease and spreading infectious disease. The researchers say the estimated 34 million adults in the United States who smoke may also be at greater risk of complications from COVID-19.

For eight years, investigators from the Transdisciplinary Tobacco Research Program at Loma Linda University Cancer Center have reported findings from National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded studies conducted in Laos and Cambodia that revealed the use of tobacco increases a person’s susceptibility and transmission of infectious disease due to the frequent sharing of smoking tools and destruction of mucociliary function in the lung. In the study Mixed Methods Pilot Study of Sharing Behaviors among Waterpipe Smokers of Rural Lao PDR: Implications for Infectious Disease Transmission published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health, researchers found waterpipe smokers share their personal tobacco pipe with an average of five people per week. Frequent sharing of pipes increases the probability of spreading infectious disease.

On March 11, 2020, as the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a global pandemic, Loma Linda University presented three different studies at the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco in New Orleans linking tobacco use and tobacco pipes with infectious disease pathogens. These studies, funded by the National Institutes of Health, revealed that tobacco use and cigarette smoking were associated with higher rates of tuberculosis in Laos and Cambodia. The higher rates were discovered due to the damages caused by smoking to the mucociliary escalator — the protective function of the upper airway that removes pathogens from entering the lower/deep lung where complications are caused as seen in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grant’s principal investigator Pramil Singh, DrPH, director of the Transdisciplinary Tobacco Research Program at Loma Linda University Cancer Center, says these findings can be instrumental in understanding how smoking can affect both the spread and complications from COVID-19.

“Before the pandemic, we saw tobacco use was associated with several infectious diseases including tuberculosis, HIV, and more,” Singh says. “Understanding the correlation can aid in smoking cessation and preventative measures nationwide to slow down the spread of the deadly COVID-19.”

Singh says increasing the number of smoking cessation programs in the United States and abroad would save lives and decrease the amount of the spread. Loma Linda University currently has smoking cessation trials in Mongolia and the U.S., and an innovative smoking cessation program for its employees. As Americans near the opportunity to return to work, Singh says employers can create smoking cessation programs to help their workers since only 6% of employers provide a discount on health insurance premiums to people who do not use tobacco products, and 10% offer a discount for participating in a program to quit smoking, according to the Society for Human Resource Management’s (SHRM’s) 2018 Employee Benefits survey report.

“With the support of employers, smokers are three times more successful in quitting smoking, according to a 2004 study involving General Electric,” Singh says. “These are difficult times, and we should take seriously any clues we can use to predict the causation and spread.”

Cognex Introduces World’s First Industrial Smart Camera Powered by Deep Learning

Cognex In-Sight D900 embedded vision system

“By embedding our ViDi deep learning software in In-Sight, customers can solve even the most complex visual inspections quickly, easily, and more cost-effectively,” said Joerg Kuechen, Senior Vice President of Vision Products at Cognex.

Cognex Corporation, the leader in industrial machine vision, introduces the In-Sight® D900 embedded vision system. A first-of-its-kind solution, the In-Sight D900 features Cognex’s ViDiTM deep learning software inside an In-Sight industrial-grade smart camera. The self-contained system is designed to solve a broad range of complex in-line inspection applications including optical character recognition (OCR), assembly verification, and defect detection.

“Sophisticated manufacturers are increasingly turning to deep learning vision to solve inspections that are too complicated, time-consuming, or costly to program using human or rule-based machine vision,” said Joerg Kuechen, Senior Vice President of Vision Products at Cognex. “By embedding our ViDi deep learning software in In-Sight, customers can solve even the most complex visual inspections quickly, easily, and more cost-effectively.”

Combining the self-learning ability of a human inspector with the robustness and consistency of a vision system, the In-Sight D900 expands the limits of what can be inspected in factory automation. “We’re sincerely grateful for this thoughtful donation from DICK’S. The fully-stocked fanny packs will help keep PPE close to our employees at all times for when they need it.”

DICK’S Sporting Goods (DICK’S), the nation’s largest omni-channel sports retailer, has joined the growing list of organizations stepping up to help health care providers like Allegheny Health Network (AHN) respond to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in western Pennsylvania. DICK’S donated cots and blankets to AHN, as well as fanny packs for caregivers to carry essential personal protective equipment (PPE) such as masks, gloves, face shields and hand sanitizer.

The fanny packs will provide those on the frontlines a convenient way to store and access their PPE.

“We can’t thank DICK’S enough for its generous support of our caregivers and everyone at AHN and Highmark Health who are working hard to meet the needs of our patients and communities during this challenging time,” said Cynthia Hundorfean, AHN president and CEO.

AHN implemented its pandemic response plan in early February and continues to take steps daily to better prepare for a potential surge of COVID-19 patients in the days and weeks ahead. In late March, the network made protective surgical masks available to all employees working in clinical areas at its affiliated hospitals, and last week announced its innovative N95 mask sterilization and reuse process to further increase the availability of PPE for its employees.

“DICK’S Sporting Goods believes in giving back to our communities throughout the country and here in our hometown of Pittsburgh,” said Colleen Wilson, DICK’S Sporting Goods Manager of Corporate Relations. “Now, more than ever, we felt it was important to support our local hospitals. Through this donation of fanny packs, cots and blankets, it’s our hope that we can support Allegheny Health Network’s ability to receive and care for ill patients during this unprecedented time.”

“Allegheny Health Network places the highest priority on providing safe care for our patients while protecting of our staff. To that end, we continue to focus on the heightened importance of PPE for our caregivers who are on the frontlines of this pandemic,” said Allie Quick, AHN chief philanthropy officer. “We’re sincerely grateful for this thoughtful donation from DICK’S. The fully-stocked fanny packs will help keep PPE close to our employees at all times for when they need it.”

DICK’S joins several local community organizations that have provided generous aid to support AHN’s COVID-19 response efforts. For more information on how to support AHN caregivers, visit https://www.ahn.org/coronavirus/ways-to-help.

This attachment is also available with a powered roll rotation.

These features ensure a quick, easy and simple transfer with minimal operator effort which means that the rolls can be handled surely and safely with minimum effort and complete confidence.

The attachment has been designed to provide a high load capacity with great strength and durability as well as enhanced wear resistance. It is very easy to use which provides a simple and safe action and is entirely suitable for the pharmaceutical and food industries and similar hygienic applications.
