Successful Dental Implant for Marfan Syndrome Patient

The clinicians also reviewed the many complications associated with Marfan syndrome. In doing so, they highlighted that dental professionals should become familiar with the oral manifestations of this syndrome to help patients improve their quality of life through prevention and management.

Journal of Oral Implantology – Marfan syndrome is a genetic disorder that affects connective tissue throughout the body and causes many clinical manifestations in patients. One such common complication is advanced gum disease that increases the risk for mitral valve prolapse and damage the aorta, bones, eyes, lungs, and covering of the spinal cord. A recent case report in the Journal of Oral Implantology details a viable treatment option for a Marfan syndrome patient with jawbone loss and misaligned teeth.

Clinicians from the University of Kentucky and the University of Aberdeen cared for a 56-year-old Marfan syndrome patient who had a long and complex oral treatment history. However, as a result of advanced gum disease, bone loss continued to progress, and the patient sought a full-mouth dental replacement. First, dentists performed a sinus lift with a bone graft to augment the upper jawbone that had lost volume and density; without it, there would not have been enough bone to support dental implants. After a healing period of 9 months, clinicians extracted all remaining teeth and examined the quality of the bone graft, noting that the outcome was positive.

Nine SLActive screw-like implants were placed in the lower and upper jaw ridges, where teeth are normally. Then, after the implants integrated with the jaw bones—called osseointegration— locator abutments were installed, which are above-the-gum attachment pieces that allow the patient to easily insert a removable dental prosthesis. Finally, the dental prosthesis was constructed, fitted and provided to the patient. The patient was seen for follow-up appointments for 2 years, and the clinicians noted that the patient was pleased with the result and had no problems with the removable dental prosthesis.

The clinicians also reviewed the many complications associated with Marfan syndrome. In doing so, they highlighted that dental professionals should become familiar with the oral manifestations of this syndrome to help patients improve their quality of life through prevention and management. The authors conclude that their technique is an excellent option for patients with Marfan syndrome who need a dental prostheses.

News Image

BCEN’s Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) credential is held by over 5,200 trauma and emergency care nurses.

“Whether she is delivering life-saving trauma care, encouraging her peers to advance themselves and their practice through certification, or teaching weekly classes on trauma topics, Lt. Pruett’s dedication to trauma care excellence is remarkable.”

The Board of Certification for Emergency Nursing (BCEN), the benchmark for board certification across the emergency nursing spectrum, announced today that U.S. Air Force emergency services/trauma nurse First Lieutenant Mariah Pruett, NC, BSN, RN, CEN, CFRN, CPEN, TCRN, CCRN, from the 60th Medical Group/Emergency Services Flight at David Grant USAF Medical Center, Travis Air Force Base, California, is the recipient of BCEN’s 2020 Distinguished TCRN Award. Travis AFB is home to the state-of-the-art David Grant USAF Medical Center (DGMC), which provides a full spectrum of care to more than 130,000 TRICARE eligible patients in the San Francisco/Sacramento area and 500,000 Northern California veterans.

Each year, BCEN recognizes one top Trauma Certified Registered Nurse (TCRN) who demonstrates an exceptional commitment to certified trauma nursing excellence while advocating for others to earn trauma nursing’s highest professional credential. The over 5,200 nurses who hold the TCRN have demonstrated advanced knowledge, expertise and clinical judgment across the trauma care continuum, from injury prevention and prehospital care, to acute care, to rehabilitation and reintegration into society.

“Whether she is delivering life-saving trauma care and stabilization for U.S. and Allied forces while on deployment, encouraging her peers to advance themselves and their trauma nursing practice through certification, or teaching weekly classes on trauma topics to over 100 special operations medics and paramedics, Lt. Pruett’s dedication to trauma care excellence is remarkable,” said BCEN Executive Director Janie Schumaker, MBA, BSN, RN, CEN, CENP, CPHQ, FABC.

After earning the TCRN credential plus BCEN specialty certifications in flight nursing and pediatric emergency nursing in the same year, Pruett designed a mentorship program that increased the TCRN certification rate in the 60th Medical Group by 200%. Pruett also trained to serve on Critical Care Air Transportation Team (CCATT) and Tactical Critical Care Evacuation Team (TCCET) missions.

“Lt. Pruett has constantly let her achievements in patient care and certification shine as a bright example for those around her to follow,” said Major Michael C. Galante, DGMC Emergency Services Medical Director. “She continually strives for excellence in both her clinical knowledge and clinical care, elevating the knowledge and skill of those around her by doing so.”

“Becoming a Trauma Certified Registered Nurse has been a goal of mine since I first stepped foot into an emergency department,” said Pruett. “Earning this award shows how far I have come in my career, from a new nurse hungry to learn, to a skilled nurse running trauma bays, taking care of in-flight trauma, and advocating for my colleagues to earn their own certifications. It is an honor to receive BCEN’s Distinguished TCRN Award.”

Total Immunoglobulin M (IgM) ELISA Kit

Salimetrics Salivary Total Human IgM ELISA Kit

The Salimetrics Total IgM Assay Kit quantifies levels of total human IgM in saliva and other oral fluids, which can be used for sample quality assurance and as inclusion criteria when using oral fluid as an alternative sample type for serological studies.

As the world adapts to the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic, infectious disease epidemiologists and public health officials need tools to enable surveillance at scale. More so than ever, our need to understand who has and who hasn’t been exposed seems paramount. This is especially true when some individuals who have been exposed express disease symptoms while others do not. Research is needed to decipher how to interpret what “exposure without symptoms” means in terms of individual and public health in the short and longer term.

Saliva and oral fluids provide investigators and public health officials a minimally invasive means of obtaining biospecimens at scale. Studies show that saliva collection is preferred over more traditional biospecimen collection protocols (e.g., venipuncture, finger stick, nasopharyngeal swab) and that samples can be self-collected here, there, and almost everywhere with minimal training. In an effort to advance the science, Salimetrics introduces a new ELISA Kit to measure human total Immunoglobulin M (IgM) in saliva and oral fluids.

The Salimetrics Total IgM Assay Kit quantifies levels of total human IgM in saliva and other oral fluids, which can be used for sample quality assurance and as inclusion criteria when using oral fluid as an alternative sample type for serological studies. Pathogen specific IgM is indicative of recent acute exposure, and when used together with total IgM, researchers can confidently track outbreak scenarios and minimize false negatives due to inadequate total IgM levels using the convenience of oral fluid sampling.

Immunoglobulin M (IgM) is present in two major forms in the circulation. Natural IgM is a low-affinity pentameric molecule that binds to invading pathogens without requiring prior exposure. This form acts to directly neutralize viruses, activate complement, trigger phagocytosis, and drive antibody dependent cell mediated cytotoxicity. Adaptive IgM is the first antibody produced in response to invading pathogens and functions in a similar way to natural IgM but is a high-affinity molecule. The majority of IgM is pentameric and includes the J chain which is also a key structural component found in polymeric IgA. IgM also naturally forms hexamers, however, in this case the J chain is absent.

In serology studies, the detection of pathogen specific IgM is often used as an indication of recent exposure and has more utility as a marker during an infectious disease outbreak. The major source of IgM in oral fluid is serum leaking from the gingiva. For salivary measures of pathogen specific IgM, total IgM should be used to qualify the salivary sample to ensure there are adequate levels of total IgM to detect the disease specific IgM of interest.

The Salimetrics Total Salivary IgM Assay Kit features a small test volume of 10 µL, dynamic range of 0.39 – 25 ng/mL, lower limit of detection of 0.03 ng/mL, and average inter and intra-assay coefficients of variation less than 10%. The assay is provided in a standard 96-well plate format for single use and is also available in bulk packaging for high-throughput applications. The new salivary IgM assay takes its place alongside the recently released Salimetrics Salivary Total Human IgG Assay Kit. Together, these assays assure the quality of oral fluid/saliva samples and therefore improve specificity and sensitivity of corresponding pathogen specific serological assays. Saliva collection has been validated with SalivaBio’s oral fluid/saliva collection protocols and follows the same convenient and reproducible methods that SalivaBio has provided the scientific community for years.

Salimetrics is a key partner in best-in-class solutions to salivary bioscience research. By using Salimetrics products and services, researchers can experience solutions to problems where the full potential of salivary measures have yet to be realized. To learn more about the new Salivary IgM Assay Kit, researchers can visit the Salimetrics Website, or contact expert researcher support to integrate salivary IgM into their current or future research study.

Westwind Integrated Health Raises Awareness of Juvenile Arthritis in Phoenix, AZ, and Its Effects on Oral and Overall Health

Drs. Nabil Fehmi and Maryam Beyramian, Dentists in Phoenix, AZ

Drs. Nabil Fehmi and Maryam Beyramian Raise Awareness of Juvenile Arthritis in Phoenix, AZ

Patients seeking pediatric care can be seen by both a medical doctor and a dentist at the same location and frequently within the same day.

Westwind Integrated Health is spreading awareness of juvenile arthritis and how it affects nearly 300,000 children in the United States. Children who suffer from juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) can experience temporomandibular joint (TMJ) pain affecting their jaw, along with overall swelling or stiffness of the joints. Westwind Integrated Health specializes in both dental and medical treatment, so children suffering from juvenile arthritis in Phoenix, AZ can receive comprehensive pediatric care from this versatile practice.

Juvenile arthritis is an inflammatory condition or pediatric rheumatic disease that can develop in children under the age of 16, regardless of ethnic background or age. Juvenile arthritis is treatable, and children affected can live normal lives. Common causes and symptoms of juvenile arthritis include:

  • Genetic predisposition to arthritis
  • Joint pain, swelling, redness or warmth
  • Swollen or sore eyes, skin, muscles or gastrointestinal tract

Children with juvenile arthritis are more at risk of inflamed gum tissue and of being diagnosed with gum disease. It has also been found that these children can suffer from pain in the temporomandibular joint or muscle. Those with TMJ disorder may experience stiffness in the jaw, which impedes normal oral function. Additional dental concerns include jaws growing at different speeds or difficulty in brushing and flossing teeth.

Westwind Integrated Health offers full-service medical and dental care at their unique practice. Patients seeking pediatric care can be seen by both a medical doctor and a dentist at the same location and frequently within the same day. This multi-specialty approach allows doctors and patients to look at the whole body, not just one specific area at a time. Since the mouth and body are so interconnected, this integration allows the doctors of Westwind Integrated Health to give patients a comprehensive full-body approach to healthcare.

“Unless we have a healthy body, we can never have a healthy mouth. We start with the mouth, then go to the body, then back to the mouth and back to the body in order to make sure everything is healthy at the same level,” says Dr. Maryam Beyramian.

With timely and effective TMJ treatment and treatments for overall juvenile arthritis, children can see vast improvements in their day-to-day lives. The doctors at Westwind Integrated Health advise parents to not let their children neglect their oral health and to schedule dental exams every six months.

Those interested in learning more about juvenile arthritis or who would like to receive integrated pediatric care in Phoenix, AZ are encouraged to schedule an appointment at Westwind Integrated Health. Appointments can be made by calling 602-457-8024. More information can also be found online at http://www.westwindintegratedhealth.com.

Healthcare Distributors Use Opendock To Minimize COVID-19 Chaos

Opendock

“It feels good to know that our software is playing a key role in helping to successfully overcome this pandemic. And being able to get PPE to those who need it most is a critical component.”

Warehouses and distribution centers that move healthcare-related products are facing serious challenges due to the pandemic. Most were not prepared for the massive surge in volume.

While the difficulty in manufacturing and distribution for household paper products has been problematic, challenges in getting PPE (personal protective equipment) to healthcare workers is a matter of life and death. Indeed, hospital staff and other front-line workers require PPE to properly and safely perform their jobs.

PPE includes medical masks, goggles, clothing, gloves, and other protective gear used by healthcare workers and other first responders. In some cases, getting PPE to those who need it has been a manufacturing problem – the items simply are not available. In other instances, the snag has been with distribution.

Part of the difficulty with distribution during the pandemic has been that warehouses and distribution centers are not well-equipped to handle huge spikes in volume. One reason is that warehouses have a fixed number of dock doors. Even if a given warehouse has additional storage capacity, it can only serve a limited number of trucks at one time. This has created a logjam that has plagued thousands of warehouse facilities as a result of the pandemic.

But a specified number of dock doors is just one of the problems warehouses and DCs are facing.

Because many warehouses have extended their hours to help with the demand, they are being stretched thin on staffing. They are asking more of their existing team members while trying to quickly onboard new staff.

Additionally, the carriers who deliver to and pick up from warehouses are feeling some pain. A large food distributor recently reported lines of trucks of up to two miles and wait times spanning days. Many of the trucks were bringing goods to the warehouse. But a large number of them were waiting to be loaded so they could transport the food products to other DCs or to stores.

While the chaos has been nearly unbearable for many warehouses, others are smoothly handling this throughput challenge by utilizing dock scheduling software, such as Opendock.

Lawrence Dillworth, inbound supervisor at Owens & Minor, noted, “Without Opendock during the COVID-19 volume surge, it would have been a catastrophic failure.” Owens & Minor is a $9 billion manufacturer and distributor of healthcare products.

Opendock allows carriers to book specific appointment times to load or unload freight, solving many of the problems associated with the historical first come, first served model. In that model, trucks compete to get in line as early as possible to minimize their wait time. It’s an inefficient model for both truckers and warehouses.

Opendock CEO, Bob La Loggia, said, “It feels good to know that our software is playing a key role in helping to successfully overcome this pandemic. And being able to get PPE to those who need it most is a critical component.”

Opendock is based in Scottsdale, Arizona. It is a centralized shipping dock scheduling platform that allows carriers and brokers to book appointments with warehouses. With over 25,000 registered users, all major carriers and brokers use the platform daily, including C.H. Robinson, Echo, Schneider, XPO, DHL, and Estes. Additionally, some of the largest shippers in the world also use the system, such as Cargill, Ecolab, International Paper, Pepsi, and others. To learn more about Opendock, click here.

Disabled Sports USA and Adaptive Sports USA join forces to become Move United, the nation’s leading community-based adaptive sports organization

There is nothing like the power of sport. Sport makes us more; physically, mentally and socially, Move United Executive Director Glenn Merry

Leveraging more than 110 years of combined adaptive sports experience, Disabled Sports USA and Adaptive Sports USA are merging to become Move United. This new organization will lead the movement to fully include people with disabilities in American society, using sport to challenge perceptions and redefine ability for youth and adults with disabilities.

Move United’s network will launch across more than 200 chapters in 43 states offering 100,000 youth and adults with disabilities opportunities to participate and compete in more than 50 different adaptive sports. This merger delivers a robust platform for growth, fostering expansion to more communities, with a goal to be locally available to 90% of the U.S. population by 2028, when the Olympics and Paralympics return to the U.S.

To learn more about this merger and movement, please join Move United’s Facebook Live announcement on Thursday, May 7 at 3:00 p.m. ET.

“There is nothing like the power of sport. Sport makes us more; physically, mentally and socially. That is true for people with and without disabilities, but often today’s youth and adults with disabilities have few opportunities to participate.” said Glenn Merry, executive director of Move United. “Move United intends to change that by growing our network of 200+ community-based adaptive programs and challenging limits. Our vision is to redefine how society views ability.”

Bringing together the expertise of the two leading organizations in community-based adaptive sports will mean greater growth and more support to local, community-based adaptive sports programs, which often provide the only means of sports participation for youth and adults with disabilities. Move United’s mission is to help these organizations grow and thrive.

As a Member of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), Move United will provide a wide range of nationwide programming including recreational and competitive adaptive sports, staff, volunteer and instructor training, and services including risk management, outreach and adaptive sport grants. Move United is a 2019 USOPC Rings of Gold awardee.

“The merger makes Move United the pipeline for athletes with disabilities to not only learn adaptive sports but to compete at the highest levels,” said Susan Rossi, former executive director of Adaptive Sports USA and now Director of Competition at Move United. “The nation’s best and most prominent adaptive sports competitions, including the Move United Junior Nationals, will be supported through Move United and these competitions will provide greater opportunities for athletes aspiring to compete at the state, regional, national and international levels. With the heart and soul, history, and expertise of this network, we are thrilled to have a unified voice and collective goal moving forward.”

The Move United Junior Nationals is the oldest and largest continuously held competitive multi-sport event for youth athletes with physical disabilities ages 6 to 22 in North America. Started in 1984, the event commonly gathers over 300 athletes, their coaches, and family members from across the U.S. and has served as the developmental training ground for many U.S. Paralympic athletes.

“Beginning as an eleven-year old with no athletic experience, I found a welcoming community of athletes with disabilities to learn from, grow, and share experiences with – first locally, then nationally, all the way up to my Paralympic career” said Amanda McGrory, 3-time U.S. Paralympian and 7-time medalist. “Without assistance, it can be intimidating to start the journey on one’s own. Combining missions and forming Move United will help athletes at all levels, as well as offer more opportunities for people with disabilities to find a sport they love.”

Disabled Sports USA and Adaptive Sports USA were both originally formed by military veterans during the Korean and Vietnam wars. Move United will be the largest nonprofit provider of adaptive sports to injured veterans, annually providing adaptive sports opportunities to 2,000 injured veterans and family members at no cost through its Move United Warfighters program. In a 2015 research paper funded by the VA, researchers noted that often for veterans “adapted sports, recreation, and social programs acted as a facilitator of community reintegration as well as the only community activities in which they participated.”

“Sports have played a very important part in my rehabilitation since being injured in Iraq” said retired Army Captain Matt Staton. I was demoralized after my injury, but adaptive sports gave me the confidence and motivation to get back to living life. Today, I am a certified adaptive ski and scuba instructor and help other injured warfighters rebuild their lives through sports. Move United will help 2,000 injured veterans and family members each year, and I look forward to supporting their important mission.”

Move United’s name reflects the vision of the organization to lead a united movement creating opportunities for youth and adults with disabilities to move, by being included in sports and recreation. Move United’s unique logo typeface is based on the deconstruction and reconstruction of the word “disability.” The unique look and feel of Move United’s brand is based on a patchwork design, reflecting the patchwork of community-based adaptive sports organizations that are the heart of Move United. The various patterns in the patchwork reflect the many types of disabilities served by Move United. Brand work was done in partnership with Superunion, the world’s most awarded global brand agency.
