Historic Colorado House Bill 20-1424 Creating Social Equity in Colorado passes with Expungement Amendment Thanks to the Cannabis Consumers Coalition Last Minute Efforts

News Image

“I had suggested a broad definition for a social equity candidate in early stakeholder meetings. Fearing it was not moving fast enough and not inclusive enough of a process, I hired Ms. Sovine to assist me in ensuring that all stakeholders and all potential social equity candidates were included.”

Longtime cannabis activist and entrepreneur, Larisa Bolivar, who is Executive Director of the Cannabis Consumers Coalition and CEO of Bolivar Hemp Company, is happy to report that a bill she hired longtime lobbyist Cindy Sovine to craft to define social equity candidates. Colorado House Bill 20-1424 Social Equity in Regulated Cannabis Businesses was also amended to add the ability for the governor to pardon cannabis crimes to expunge criminal records and enable more people who were harmed by the War on Drugs to

The bill also enables the industry to move forward on an accelerator licensing program passed last year by Coloradans in the sunset bill, SB 19-224, as well as enable Denver to move forward for their social equity goals. Last year, Coloradans also passed social consumption and delivery bills which will allow for social equity licensees to also apply for making this bill extremely urgent for Colorado and Denver to meet social equity goals.

“I had suggested a broad definition for a social equity candidate in early stakeholder meetings. Fearing it was not moving fast enough and not inclusive enough of a process, I hired Ms. Sovine to assist me in ensuring that all stakeholders and all potential social equity candidates were included.” States Ms. Bolivar about the need to push the bill through during a very hectic time during a pandemic.

The bill, which was a last-minute bill introduced on June 9th during a flurry of other bills being rushed through the Colorado General Assembly in the wake of COVID and other major issues needing to be heard such as vaccinations and police body cams. There was a significant risk that the bill would die waiting to be heard, and Ms. Sovine was very diligent in ensuring that the bill was relevant and in ensuring that the bill received bipartisan support.

Having bipartisan support was not an easy task, and Republicans to have a significant say because social equity is also a free market issue. Any restrictions on the market go against free market principles. And, considering the current racial tension in the United States, it is remarkable that Colorado passed a social equity bill with bipartisan support, making this bill even more monumental. Plus, this also enable the creation of pathways to be developed for real ownership with support along the way. Ms. Bolivar has experience developing roadmaps to success for social equity programs and won a $650 thousand workforce development grant from the state of California.

“I know we can have a successful social equity program and the state can now make rules around grant and loan money from marijuana tax revenues. This is a double win for me considering I headed the campaign that was against high marijuana taxes.” Ms. Bolivar continues, “And, I can help along the way from outreach, to training, to internship and placed into management positions or successfully open up their own licensed cannabis shop.”

There are multiple possibilities that will result from this monumental and historical bill. The biggest win is the ability to create real ownership opportunities and economic stability for community members most harmed by the War on Drugs and begin repairing those harms. Experts Analyze Options for Treating Multiple Sclerosis-Related Cognitive Impairment

“Evidence suggests that cognitive rehabilitation is effective in MS-related cognitive dysfunction, and may confer long-lasting effects,” said John DeLuca, PhD, senior VP of Research and Training at Kessler Foundation, and a co-author of the article.

Next decade will see inclusion of cognitive rehabilitation and exercise training in treatment protocols for multiple sclerosis

Experts in cognitive research evaluated the status of available treatments as well as promising strategies for treating cognitive deficits in multiple sclerosis. The article, “Treatment and management of cognitive dysfunction in patients with multiple sclerosis,” was published in Nature Reviews 2020 May 05. (doi: 10.1038/s41582-020-0355-1) The authors are John DeLuca, PhD, and Nancy Chiaravalloti, PhD, of Kessler Foundation, and Brian Sandroff, PhD, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Cognitive dysfunction is a common, disabling symptom of multiple sclerosis, affecting two-thirds of patients. These individuals can have difficulties managing finances, performing household tasks, and functioning in the community and the workplace. Although the impact on daily life may be profound, the diagnosis and management of cognitive dysfunction in this population remains inadequate. The authors provided detailed analyses of different approaches to treatment, including cognitive rehabilitation, exercise training, and pharmacotherapy, and the important contributions of brain neuroimaging to advances in this field.

Over the past decade, research activity in cognitive rehabilitation has increased in the population with MS. There is greater emphasis on cognitive screening and assessment, and some standardized treatment protocols are available. “Evidence suggests that cognitive rehabilitation is effective in MS-related cognitive dysfunction, and may confer long-lasting effects,” said John DeLuca, PhD, senior VP of Research and Training at Kessler Foundation, and a co-author of the article. “Access to cognitive rehabilitation therapy is likely to increase as remote options for delivery become more widely accepted, such as programs for home computers and telerehabilitation services.”

Exercise training is an active area of MS research that shows promise for enhancing cognitive function and effecting positive change in the everyday lives of people living with MS. With improvements in methodology, this line of research will support consideration of exercise as the standard of care for individuals with MS. “It is critical that larger scale studies include participants with MS, including progressive MS, and target select cognitive outcomes,” Dr. DeLuca noted. To develop treatment protocols, the timing, dosage and duration of exercise need to be determined. “As studies continue to evolve, clinical applications of exercise recommendations are likely to be implemented within the next ten years,” he predicted.

The authors found that current pharmacotherapeutic approaches were of limited benefit for the cognitive symptoms of MS. To date, none of the available medications or disease-modifying therapies for MS are indicated for the treatment of cognitive deficits. Dr. DeLuca addressed the fundamental challenge to trials of pharmaceutical agents: “To determine the efficacy of a pharmacologic intervention for cognitive dysfunction, randomized controlled trials need to include cognition among their primary outcomes.”

American College of Lifestyle Medicine Announces Addition of Brain Vitality Innovator Healthy Minds Initiative to its Corporate Roundtable

News Image

Nearly 90% of dementias and many other cognitive diseases could be prevented by healthier lifestyle choices.

The American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) has announced the addition of the nonprofit Healthy Minds Initiative to its Lifestyle Medicine Corporate Roundtable, a group of individuals and organizations whose collective vision is sustainable human health, a sustainable health care system and a sustainable world.

Healthy Minds Initiative (HMI) is the first nonprofit organization to approach brain health at the interface of community, technology and research. Its aim is to empower individuals to achieve their optimal brain health, and provide communities information regarding brain health, actionable research and locally relevant resources.

“The future of mind/brain health is centered on Lifestyle Medicine because nearly 90% of dementias and many of the other cognitive diseases such as stroke, depression and anxiety could be prevented by healthier lifestyle choices,” said HMI founders Drs. Dean and Ayesha Sherzai.

HMI provides science-based brain health education and resources to partner communities. HMI also undertakes Community Based Participatory Research (CBPR) in partner communities to better understand local needs, resources and unique approaches to specific community brain health needs. One such existing HMI project is in the Beach Cities of Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach, California. With a total population of 123,000 residents, 13 percent of which are over the age of 65, HMI’s current health initiatives focus on dementia and general brain health. This large-scale clinical trial in The Beach Cities Health District of Southern California is investigating the influence of a comprehensive lifestyle program on long-term cognitive and general health. HMI also works extensively in other local communities to provide education and raise awareness about a healthy brain.

“Healthy Minds Initiative’s vision of a global brain vitality revolution that prevents and mitigates cognitive diseases and disorders at their root cause is inspiring and greatly needed,” said ACLM President Dexter Shurney, MD, MBA, MPH, FACLM, DipABLM. “Some 47 million people are living with Alzheimer’s disease alone. We are pleased to welcome HMI to our Corporate Roundtable.”

“This collaboration between Healthy Minds Initiative and American College of Lifestyle Medicine is a perfect union of two organizations that believe in community empowerment, preventive medicine, and evidence-based health care,” said HMI co-founder Ayesha Sherzai. “We are so pleased to join ACLM in the Corporate Roundtable!”

The Corporate Roundtable of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine convenes health care and lifestyle thought leaders, with a keen focus on the power of Lifestyle Medicine to transform health and health care. Roundtable members explore effective Lifestyle Medicine clinical applications, strategies for accelerating reimbursement, and adoption and analysis of potential business-related opportunities. The Roundtable launched in 2015 and has grown to include more than 30 active member organizations.

ABOUT THE AMERICAN COLLEGE OF LIFESTYLE MEDICINE: ACLM is the medical professional society for those dedicated to the advancement and clinical practice of Lifestyle Medicine as the foundation of a transformed and sustainable health care system. Lifestyle Medicine is the use of a whole food, plant-predominant dietary lifestyle, regular physical activity, restorative sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substances and positive social connection as a primary therapeutic modality for treatment and reversal of chronic disease.

More than a professional association, ACLM is a galvanized force for change. ACLM addresses the need for quality education and certification, supporting its members in their individual practices and in their collective mission to domestically and globally promote Lifestyle Medicine as the first treatment option, as opposed to a first option of treating symptoms and consequences with expensive, ever increasing quantities of pills and procedures. ACLM members are united in their desire to identify and eradicate the root cause of disease. Learn more at http://www.LifestyleMedicine.org.

Patients With Psychiatric Diagnoses Are Testing Streaming Art in Sensory Room

ArtPlayer in Sensory Room

ArtPlayer in Sensory Room

When I see the charts of the results of our ArtPlayer patient monitoring, I think it’s quite positive and I believe it could be a valuable addition to the centers sensory room.

14 patients over 18 years with one or more psychiatric diagnoses on a closed section at Psychiatric Center Glostrup in the Capital Region of Denmark have tested ArtPlayer’s mood calming art streaming service on a large screen in the centers sensory room.

The purpose of the quantitative study of the effect of ArtPlayer was to investigate if ArtPlayer could function as an offering in the centers sensory room, in which they want patients to achieve peace and increased mental well-being.

Before and after results of mental recovery showed an average improvement from 5.5 to 7.14 on a 0-10 scale. That is, from how patients feel right before entering the sensory room to how they feel right after watching ArtPlayer for 30 min. in the sensory room.

Moreover, 12 out of the 14 patients found that ArtPlayer is a good addition to the sensory room. Especially, ArtPlayer made the patients feel calm, relaxation and contemplation.

Ditte Marie Hellberg, Occupational Therapist, Psychiatric Center Glostrup: “When I see the charts of the results of our ArtPlayer patient monitoring, I think it’s quite positive and I believe it could be a valuable addition to the centers sensory room.”

Morten Kryger, Managing Director, ArtPlayer: “The positive calming effects of using ArtPlayer in healthcare environments are certainly not new to us, such as reducing perceived waiting time and restless behavior in emergency departments, reducing fear of a blood test and fear of going to dentist etc. However, the cost-saving potential in mental health services using ArtPlayer on patients with psychiatric diagnoses instead of giving them expensive calming medicine could be the greatest!”
