“Dexur’s value analysis tracks a patient’s episode of care from the date of admission for 90 days and includes the index hospitalization, rehospitalization, home health, nursing home, and ED costs.”

Dexur’s analysis of Medicare claims of hospitals within a 50-mile radius of Boise, Idaho, showed that St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center had the best value outcomes over a 90-day episode for Heart Failure, followed by Saint Alphonsus Medical Center – Nampa and Saint Alphonsus Regional Medical Center. The analysis was risk-adjusted, for alive and non-hospice patients and was done at the DRG level, specifically DRG 291: Heart Failure And Shock With Major Complication Or Comorbidity, to adjust for complications and comorbidities.

St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center’s total cost of care over a 90-day episode was $19,432 (for the period of July 2016 to June 2019). The index hospitalization cost was $9,805 and the average rehospitalization cost was $6,254. The cost per rehospitalization was at an average of $21,891. Meanwhile, the average ED costs per hospitalization (when ED is involved) was $708.

NeoTract Designates Dr. Tim Davenport as UroLift® Center of Excellence

News Image

“This designation recognizes Dr. Tim Davenport as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing safe and effective treatment to patients with BPH,” said Dave Amerson

NeoTract, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE:TFX) focused on addressing unmet needs in the field of urology, today announced that Tim Davenport, M.D., The Jackson Clinic in Jackson, TN, has been designated as a UroLift® Center of Excellence. The designation recognizes that Dr. Davenport has achieved a high level of training and experience with the UroLift® System and demonstrated a commitment to exemplary care for men suffering from symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate.

Recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines, the FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.

The UroLift Center of Excellence program is designed to highlight urologists who are committed to educating their patients on BPH and the UroLift System as a treatment option and consistently seek to deliver excellent patient outcomes and experiences.

“This designation recognizes Dr. Tim Davenport as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing safe and effective treatment to patients with BPH,” said Dave Amerson, president of the Teleflex Interventional Urology business unit. “We are pleased to see the continued acceptance of the UroLift System as a standard of care treatment that may allow men to discontinue the use of BPH medications and improve their quality of life.”

Over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH, a condition that occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Symptoms of BPH often include interrupted sleep and urinary problems and can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.

Medication is often the first-line therapy for enlarged prostate, but relief can be inadequate and temporary. Side effects of medication treatment can include sexual dysfunction, dizziness and headaches, prompting many patients to quit using the drugs. For these patients, the classic alternative is surgery that cuts, heats or removes prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra. While current surgical options can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

About the UroLift® System

The FDA-cleared UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a minimally invasive transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue. Clinical data from a pivotal 206-patient randomized controlled study showed that patients with enlarged prostate receiving UroLift implants reported rapid and durable symptomatic and urinary flow rate improvement without compromising sexual function*1,2. Patients also experienced a significant improvement in quality of life. Over 100,000 men have been treated with the UroLift System in the U.S. Most common adverse events reported include hematuria, dysuria, micturition urgency, pelvic pain, and urge incontinence. Most symptoms were mild to moderate in severity and resolved within two to four weeks after the procedure. The Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines. The UroLift System is available in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. Learn more at http://www.UroLift.com.

Axios International Launches the First and Only Full Suite of Digital Solutions to Improve Patient Access and Adherence to Treatment

Axios+ Digital Solutions

Axios International, a global pioneering healthcare access company, has launched Axios+, a new generation of innovative digital solutions specifically designed to improve patient access and adherence to treatment. The solutions will support Axios-managed Patient Support Programs (PSPs) across Asia, Greater Middle East, Africa, Europe and Latin America.

Developed based on more than 23 years of specialized experience designing and managing PSPs, Axios+ aims to improve the medical outcomes of treatment by making it easy for patients to track and manage their treatment, while facilitating and expediting the PSP referral process for physicians, and the medication dispensing process for pharmacists.

Axios+ digital solutions comprise of MyHealth app for patients, MyPatients app for physicians and MyPharmacy app for pharmacists, all linked to Axios’ digital Patient Management System. Anonymized data from the mobile applications is also aggregated into the MyPrograms web application, enabling pharmaceutical companies supporting PSPs to monitor program performance.

“Axios’ ultimate goal has always been to sustainably improve patient access and adherence to treatment to maximize patient’s medical benefits. That is why our PSPs are centered around the patient, rather than the medication boxes, and this approach has naturally been extended to our Axios+ solutions,” said Dr. Joseph Saba, Co-founder and Chief Executive Office of Axios International. “With Axios+, we now have laid a cornerstone in patients’ support outside the healthcare facility in order to optimize treatment outcomes and alleviate the burden on health facilities.”

Axios+ was created by Axios’ Digital Health team following ISO-certified procedures with enhanced security features in compliance with the highest standards of personal data protection and data safety.

“When designing digital health solutions, our main goal is to maintain Axios’ patient centricity while making our processes faster, simpler and easily accessible for stakeholders. Axios+ digital solutions achieve that, and our stakeholders are therefore more likely to engage. That ultimately leads to increasing adherence for patients in our programs,” said Raphael Itah, Head of Digital Health, Axios International. “Another critical focus when it comes to digital health solutions is to balance flexibility, engagement and security. Tremendous effort is continuously put into making Axios+ an airtight ecosystem and protecting our stakeholder data.”

The apps are available for download on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store for patients, physicians and pharmacists participating in Axios-managed PSPs.

AVMA explores the future of veterinary medicine & artificial intelligence (AI) with Vetology® AI Founder and President

Vetology AI in AVMA News

Our belief has always been that receiving a Vetology AI radiograph report within five minutes or less after taking the radiographs will positively impact patient outcomes. That said, every day I’m blown away by what Vetology AI does.

The American Medical Veterinary Association (AVMA) interviewed Seth Wallack, DVM, Board Certified Veterinary Radiologist and Founder of Vetology® and Eric Goldman, President of Vetology® AI. Dr. Wallack and Eric Goldman discussed upcoming challenges in the veterinary industry due to not having enough radiologists to meet the demand. The AVMA identified that artificial intelligence has the ability to speed up radiology interpretations and could provide a substantial benefit to both patient health and the DVM. Faster, reliable results translates into faster diagnoses, faster treatment implementation, and healthier pets.

This veterinary radiologist shortage is not just a problem for teleradiology practices, rather a global problem that impacts general practice managers, specialty and emergency hospitals. Turn-around times for obtaining a de novo radiograph over-read by a boarded veterinary radiologist can take upwards of 20 days. A 2018 study predicted that, by the end of 2022, 66 percent of the North American veterinary teleradiology caseload will not be met, which could potentially fuel life-threatening outcomes for our pets. Unfortunately, there is no end in sight for this veterinary radiologist shortage as veterinary radiology training programs continue to lose radiologists to the overwhelming teleradiology demand.

Vetology® recognized these impacts early on and decided to utilize the power of AI technology to automatically evaluate and report on radiographic images. In 2017, Vetology® developed and released image matching software. The techniques were first used internally to support the radiologists to be more efficient and meet demand. In 2018, the Vetology® AI radiology capabilities were further expanded and Vetology® AI was first to market with an augmented interpretation of radiographs using artificial intelligence and machine learning. This new approach to veterinary radiology allowed for a complete radiograph interpretation in 5 minutes or less, combined with the back-up of a boarded veterinary radiologist.

Family Physicians thank Lawmakers and Governor for Protecting Primary Care Infrastructure in State Budget

Family physicians, in addition to being the backbone of our healthcare ecosystem, are often small businesses. We need to do more to ensure these frontline physicians are able to keep their doors open. – Lisa Folberg, CAFP CEO

The California Academy of Family Physicians (CAFP) and our 11,000 members applaud lawmakers and the Governor for reaching a compromise State Budget that preserves vital primary care infrastructure programs. CAFP recognizes the devastating effects COVID-19 has wrought on state revenues and remains committed to working with lawmakers and the American Academy of Family Physicians on securing appropriate federal relief for California.

CAFP appreciates the extraordinary challenges lawmakers faced this year to balance the state’s budget and appreciate lawmakers’ wisdom in not cutting critical primary care infrastructure programs like the Song-Brown Physician Training Program and support for Medi-Cal through Proposition 56 funds. These programs are critical to ensuring access to care for vulnerable patients now and in the future.

The Song-Brown Program significantly improves access to care in underserved areas and reduces the shortage of primary care physicians in California. Song-Brown-funded programs consistently send more than 60 percent of their physician graduates to practice in state and federally designated underserved areas. The program also delivers needed services to communities immediately as each family medicine resident provides an average of at least 600 primary care patient visits per year. Likewise, this program has significant long-term benefits for communities in which residents train, as the majority of residents stay and practice in those communities. The Song-Brown program is the only state physician training program to provide incentives to programs to train underrepresented physicians.

Many of the family physician practices that are also an essential part of California’s primary care infrastructure are struggling. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed significant flaws in our health care system that have hurt primary care practices. Direct support for primary care providers is critically needed to protect a vital part of front-line care, protect against future spikes in health care costs, and prevent failures in care delivery.

We hope the Legislature’s and Governor’s support for the critical primary care services California depends on will extend to support for the Care for Californians plan. The legislation would require the State to take three crucial actions that will help support these vulnerable primary care practices:

1) Provide immediate payment reform and support for a portion of primary care practices.

2) Establish a reconciliation process to ensure payments do not result in undue compensation.

3) Ensure a successful transition to sufficient support and value-based payment for primary care.

“The threat to primary care physician practices is immediate and severe, and the impact of practice closures will be long-lasting and incredibly detrimental to the health and wellbeing of the communities they serve.,” said CAFP President, David Bazzo, MD, noting that, “A recently released national study says that almost 80 percent of primary care clinicians are experiencing ‘severe’ or ‘close to severe’ strain as a direct result of COVID-19.”

“Health plans have been taking premium dollars for months without spending them on care – they should be directing resources to ensure our primary care providers are still around when patients go back for care,” said CAFP CEO, Lisa Folberg. “Family physicians, in addition to being the backbone of our healthcare ecosystem, are often small businesses. We need to do more to ensure these frontline physicians are able to keep their doors open. “

Again, we recognize the agonizing decisions our lawmakers face as the COVID-19 Pandemic has wreaked havoc on state finances. The 11,000 members of the CAFP and the millions of patients we serve thank you for protecting crucial primary care infrastructure in the State Budget. We urge lawmakers to ask health plans to do the same by using some of the premium dollars that have already been paid to support primary care practices and ensure these physician practices are there to take care of Californians when they need them.

Smile Dental Center’s Hygienists Happy to Return to Work

Smile Dental Center

Smile Dental Center, where smiles are created in a safe and comforting environment!

The Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic resulted in the temporary closure of many businesses, including dental offices for non-emergency work. In conjunction with the American Dental Association and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Governor Lamont released reopening guidelines for Connecticut dental practices in mid-May.

Due to safety concerns, the announcement sparked hesitancy among some hygienists, who protested their practices resuming non-essential dental services.

Located in Shelton, Connecticut, Smile Dental Center took all necessary steps to guarantee their office was fully prepared for staff to return to a safe and clean atmosphere.

Before doors reopened on June 8th, new sanitation equipment was installed and clearly outlined protocols were implemented to ensure the safety of both staff and patients. As a result, their hygienists were comfortable and happy to come back to a newly improved office.

Dr. Bruce Sofferman, DDS, Managing Partner at Smile Dental Center says that despite the current challenges, his dental practice remains committed to overall health and wellness.

“It has always been our top priority to provide quality dental care in the safest environment possible, with the highest standards of cleanliness in place. We take great pride in treating both patients and staff like members of our own family.”

In the waiting room, a state-of-the-art filtration system has been installed to purify and recycle the air every 12 minutes. In addition, each exam room is now equipped with a new Extraoral Aerosol Suction Unit, which removes even the smallest aerosol particles that can be generated while treating patients.

“I feel so safe and comfortable. More importantly, our patients continue to feel like family and are comforted by the installation of new aerosol machines in the exam rooms,” says Sue, Licensed Dental Hygienist at Smile Dental Center.

In addition to new sterilization equipment and top-notch infection control techniques, Smile Dental Center has introduced new safety protocols for patients and staff entering the office:

  • Pre-appointment / entry screening questions
  • Temperature checks for patients and staff
  • Face masks required for patients and staff
  • Limited number of persons in the office
  • Hand sanitizer & disinfecting wipes made available

“Smile Dental Center was 100% prepared to safely reopen with proper PPE, new sanitation guidelines and advanced technology to clean the air. My patients are excited to see how hard we’ve worked to create a clean and safe environment!” says Sarah, Licensed Dental Hygienist at Smile Dental Center.

John Lee, MD, Named Chief Medical Information Officer for AHN

John Lee, MD, Named Chief Medical Information Officer for AHN

“AHN’s commitment to investing in a robust, leading-edge IT strategy and system that drives better healthcare value, outcomes and experiences for patients has been extraordinary,” said Dr. Lee.

Allegheny Health Network (AHN) today announced that John S. Lee, MD, has been appointed as the organization’s new Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO), effective immediately. Dr. Lee succeeds Robert White, MD, who announced his plans for retirement earlier this year. Dr. White will stay with AHN through the end of the year to help support a seamless transition.

Dr. Lee joins AHN from Edward-Elmhurst Healthcare, based in Naperville, Ill., where he has served as CMIO since 2016. At AHN, Dr. Lee will assume oversight of the network’s electronic health record integration and optimization as well as direct all strategies and technological solutions related to the convergence and utilization of telemedicine, population health management and health care analytics. In this capacity, he’ll work closely with network and Highmark Health clinical and executive leaders in assessing, designing and implementing clinical support systems that maximize quality, safety, patient engagement, and process improvement.

In 2019, all eight of AHN’s acute care hospitals were recognized as Most Wired® providers by the College of Healthcare Information Management Executives (CHIME). Most Wired® is the industry-leading survey and recognition relative to IT implementation, integration and innovation in health systems across the country. AHN is one of the nation’s largest health system’s with a singular electronic health record (Epic) that integrates all affiliated sites of care, including now 12 hospitals, five large Health + Wellness Pavilions and other outpatient care facilities, and hundreds of physician practices.

In addition to implementing systems such as Epic, Most Wired® designated organizations are those that have deployed technologies and strategies such as population health and cost-of-care analytics, telehealth, and patient portals, to expand access to care and improve clinical and efficiency outcomes.

“Information technology has been the foundation of our success in building a transformative, physician-led and patient-centered model of care for our region,” said Cynthia Hundorfean, AHN president. “It takes exceptional talent and visionary leadership to sustain and continuously advance the IT systems we deploy, and we could not have found a more accomplished and qualified physician executive to take those reigns for our organization than Dr. Lee.”

An undergraduate of Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Lee earned his medical degree from the Loyola University of Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine, and completed residencies at Cook County Hospital in Chicago. His professional affiliations include fellowship in the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS).

Last year, Dr. Lee was named the Physician Executive Leader of the Year by both HIMSS and the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems (AMDIS).

“AHN’s commitment to investing in a robust, leading-edge IT strategy and system that drives better healthcare value, outcomes and experiences for patients has been extraordinary,” said Dr. Lee. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to help build upon the program’s success and to shape its future course as part of a blended health and wellness enterprise.”

About the Allegheny Health Network:

Allegheny Health Network (AHN.org), a Highmark Health company, is an integrated healthcare delivery system serving the greater Western Pennsylvania region.
