GHX Survey Finds Supply Chain Data Key to Accelerating Healthcare’s Shift to Value-Based Care

Our survey found these Best 50 providers are not only pushing for greater levels of automation and standardization within supply chain processes, but also for ways to drive integration with clinical processes.

In support of the Association for Healthcare Resource & Material Management’s (AHRMM) annual National Healthcare Supply Chain Week, October 6-12, 2019, Global Healthcare Exchange, LLC (GHX) today announced the results of a survey conducted among its Best 50 provider organizations regarding healthcare supply chain priorities for 2020. The survey underscores the growing role of data derived from the supply chain as a key contributor in solving the cost/quality/outcomes equation in healthcare, as well as understanding and improving overall financial performance.

Today’s supply chain professionals are tasked with bringing increased levels of automation and standardization to supply chain processes to support the healthcare industry’s shift to a value-based care model. Process and efficiency improvements rely on accurate accessible data. Survey results show respondents are implementing initiatives that will empower them to make data-driven decisions to improve efficiency, reduce costs and gain visibility into the true cost of care.

“The GHX Best 50 represent an elite group of supply chain professionals who consistently demonstrate the powerful role supply chain plays in understanding the true cost of care,” said Bruce Johnson, president and CEO of GHX. “Our annual survey provides a pulse check regarding the direction in which these leaders are headed. In keeping with the theme of this year’s AHRMM Supply Chain Week, ‘Health Care Supply Chain: Advancing Health Care Through Clinical Integration,’ our survey found these Best 50 providers are not only pushing for greater levels of automation and standardization within supply chain processes, but also for ways to drive integration with clinical processes.”

GHX Best 50 supply chain leaders identified two primary initiatives that will support the move to value-based care:

Better Use of Data and Standards to Support Value-Based Care

The shift to a value-based care model requires that the healthcare industry finally understand the true cost of delivering care, including the costs of products, which products deliver the best outcome at the best price, and how to reduce clinical variation around what works best for the patient. Standardized supply chain data allows all stakeholders to understand the relationship between the cost to deliver care and the outcomes achieved. Standardization enables supplier and provider organizations to take a more strategic and informed approach to a broad range of clinical and financial systems, including EHRs, patient billing, recall tracking, value analysis activities and comparative effectiveness research. For example, GHX Best 50 provider Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System (FMOLHS) is using standardized and enriched supply chain data to better understand the cost of providing patient care and how variation affects both cost and quality.

Supply Chain and Clinical Systems Integration

The integration of supply chain and clinical systems will become increasingly critical to reduce variation in costs and quality and accelerate the necessary adjustments to improve outcomes. To account for the products used during a care episode, prepare for recalls, and capture a greater percentage of case charges, healthcare must ensure the systems supporting every aspect of care are connected and able to share timely and accurate data. For example, Stanford Health Care has created tighter integration between its supply chain and clinical systems, which allows supply chain professionals and physicians to collaborate on standardization and cost reduction initiatives

GHX Best 50

To select the Best 50, GHX evaluates the performance of more than 4,100 hospitals in the U.S. and Canada currently connected to the GHX electronic trading exchange. Annually, GHX identifies the top 50 healthcare provider organizations that are driving down costs and improving operational performance based on key utilization and exception management metrics during the calendar year. The 2018 Best 50 were announced in February 2019.

Simple Interact and Health1 Technologies Automate Data Push from Online Intake Forms to Centricity EMR and Centricity Practice Solution

News Image

We are able to complete what used to be a 20-minute task in less than 5 minutes now.

Simple Interact and Health1 Technologies announce the availability of a solution which automatically pushes patient intake forms from Simple Interact into Centricity™ EMR, a secure platform for capturing and storing patient and medical institution records and sharing them with other stakeholders. Data, including discrete medical history, demographics, contact information, and PDFs, is uploaded faster and more reliably.

With this new capability, medical facilities using Centricity Practice Solution and Centricity EMR report at least 75% reduction in data entry time. Instead of manually entering data, staff review patient-entered data before pushing it to the appropriate Centricity EMR forms in the patient chart. In addition, patient demographic and contact data, as well as PDF copies of the completed forms, are uploaded into Centricity Practice Solution.

“We have been using this new data push capability for several months now and are thrilled with the results!” said Nita Machado, Practice Manager at North Dallas ENT. “Our Medical Assistants are able to complete what used to be a 20-minute task in less than 5 minutes now. Within the Centricity EMR system, we can review the data entered by a patient in one jumbo form and approve each section to be copied over into our individual Centricity EMR forms. We finally have a streamlined, paperless patient intake process that has allowed us to increase provider utilization while reducing costs related to staff time, ink and paper.”

Simple Interact reports that its Integrated HIPAA Compliant Forms service results in:

  • Greater than 50% of new patients fill out forms ahead of time.
  • Greater than 75% reduction in data entry time per new patient visit.
  • Increased provider utilization.

“We are very excited to have partnered with Simple Interact on creating this solution,” said Rahul Patel, Partner at Health1 Technologies. “Improving patient and staff experiences is a central goal of our work and we think that automation of data upload to Centricity EMR will accomplish just that. This solution will provide our clients with a powerful tool which will help medical practices grow, while still providing their patient with the highest quality care.”

“Time is in short supply for healthcare staff and automating repetitive tasks is a huge value add,” said Ravi Kalidindi, CEO, Simple Interact. “Achieving data push capability for Centricity EMR requires deep system level expertise. We found a great partner in Health1 Technologies and are very proud of the robust data push framework we have built together. Centricity EMR users will be impressed with the amount of data we can push and the resulting workflow improvements.”

About Health1 Technologies

Health 1 Technologies was founded over a decade ago in 2006 by Jennifer Monahan and Rahul Patel to fill a specific need in the small physician practice space. Our initial goal was to be the practice’s “one stop shop” for all issues or services. We felt practices were often caught in the middle of vendor “finger-pointing” and didn’t know to whom to turn. Rahul Patel’s technical & revenue cycle background and Jennifer Monahan’s clinical background blended perfectly to offer that solution. Both Partners are involved in the daily operations of the organization along with an extremely experienced and knowledgeable team.

Today, we host our client systems in our data center, provide medical billing services, and continue to expand on our range of services that are directly linked to the optimization of the Electronic Health Record and Practice Management into the physician practice, while providing direct leadership in the various quality program regulations. We look forward to the next decade of service to our clients and the healthcare industry as a whole.

Stay Alert to Stay Safe from Deadly Skin Cancer

https://www.prweb.com/

Angie Seelal, RPA-C

Practicing skin awareness is key to making sure that our moles are non-cancerous.

It’s a real concern: The CDC reports that rates of melanoma – the deadliest form of skin cancer – more than doubled between 1982 and 2011 and continue to rise. “Practicing skin awareness is key to making sure that our moles are non-cancerous,” observes Angie Seelal, a Certified Registered Physician’s Assistant specializing in Dermatology with Advanced Dermatology PC. “Staying alert supports early treatment and peace of mind.”

Moles’ connection with melanoma is due to the role of melanocytes – pigment-producing skin cells. Melanocytes are where melanomas develop. And clusters of melanocytes are what form moles. “However, most moles are harmless,” notes Seelal. “Almost all of us have them. The key to mole safety is keeping track of risk factors and changes in number or appearance.”

While melanomas make up a minority of skin cancer cases, they provoke the most concern because they are the most lethal, forecast to cause more than 7,000 deaths this year in the United States, according to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).

“Paramount to successfully treating melanoma is early detection,” explains Seelal. “If it is allowed to progress, it can metastasize and spread to other organs, becoming especially dangerous. On the other hand, early treatment is extremely effective: If we begin before there is any spread to the body’s lymph nodes, the five-year survival rate is 99 percent.”

Moles – medical name “nevi” – fall into two categories: 1. common moles and 2. atypical or “dysplastic” moles. “Most people have between ten and forty common moles,” notes Seelal. “The common moles share certain characteristics: They are round and smooth, with a distinct border. They are small, maxing out at about the size of a pencil eraser. And they are one color: usually pink, tan, or brown. Atypical moles, on the other hand, are larger and may have an irregular color, surface, and/or border.”

“More than 50 common moles and atypical moles are risk factors we need to be aware of,” continues Seelal.

And increasing melanoma awareness remains important: “Half of melanomas are self-detected,” explains Seelal. “The earlier the patient spots it, the better the outcome.”

With that in mind, Seelal offers the following advice:

5 Tips for Mole and Melanoma Safety

1. Use a Body Mole Map for monthly self-checks: “Establish a baseline and then monitor for changes,” advises Seelal. “People can print a Body Mole Map off of the AAD’s web site and use it to diagram moles and other marks. This is an effective reference during monthly self-checks for changes that require medical evaluation.”

2. Learn your A, B, C, D, and Es: “There are five factors to remember during self-exams,” says Seelal. “Asymmetry, or an irregular shape. Border, or an uneven edge. Color – a mix is a concern. Diameter, or a change in size. And evolving or changing over time. Any of these warrants an immediate doctor’s visit.”

3. Monitor more than moles: “Melanomas are not limited to moles,” explains Seelal. “In fact, up to eighty percent occur in other areas. During self-checks, we need to stay alert for all skin changes, including color, texture, itching, bleeding and oozing. If any occurs, it’s time for a trip to the doctor’s.”

4. Schedule regular evaluations: “In addition to many common moles or the presence of atypical moles,” notes Seelal, “genes and environment also elevate melanoma risk. Factors include fair skin, childhood sunburns, and personal or family skin cancer. Those with higher risk should see the dermatologist regularly – as often as every three months for those with a combination of factors.”

5. Practice ‘safe sun’ – all year long: “Summer passes, but the sun still shines,” emphasizes Seelal. “The AAD reports that about only half of U.S. adults regularly stay protected. With ninety-five percent of melanomas linked to UV exposure, we need to get this number higher: use sunscreen, seek shade, and wear protective clothing. And absolutely no indoor tanning.”

“The most common cancer is skin cancer,” concludes Seelal. “But it’s treatable. Practicing skin awareness can help us stay safe and keep calm.”

Groundbreaking National Study on PrEP Use to Prevent HIV Acquisition Among Transgender MSM

“Our study suggests that bio-behavioral HIV prevention methods, such as PrEP, should be made available to transgender MSM. Findings support the full inclusion of transgender MSM in biomedical HIV prevention services and research,” notes study co-author Dr. Sari Reisner.

A groundbreaking study from The Fenway Institute published in the most recent issue of Journal of the international AIDS Society is the first to investigate the use of pre‐exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and the risk behaviors that indicate its use to prevent HIV among transgender MSM (men who have sex with men) nationally. Although HIV infection in the U.S. remains a serious public health concern—particularly among MSM and transgender people—HIV-related research in the transgender community has largely focused on transgender women (those assigned a male sex at birth who have a trans-feminine gender identity). The study’s findings indicate that PrEP and other bio-behavioral research on HIV prevention efforts should include transgender MSM, who are currently excluded from PrEP trials. Additionally, further guidance is required from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to inform PrEP continuum and care delivery.

Several studies have shown that transgender women are disproportionately affected by HIV infection relative to their cisgender peers. However, researchers have only recently started to evaluate HIV risk among trans-masculine people who have sex with cisgender men or share needles for hormone or recreational drug use. “Transgender MSM have been invisible in both transgender HIV prevention efforts and in cis MSM prevention delivery;” notes study co-author Dr. Sari Reisner, Director of Transgender Health Research at The Fenway Institute and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. “Our study suggests that bio-behavioral HIV prevention methods, such as PrEP, should be made available to transgender MSM. Findings support the full inclusion of transgender MSM in biomedical HIV prevention services and research.”

The study, titled “High risk and low uptake of pre‐exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV acquisition in a national online sample of transgender men who have sex with men in the United States,” was conducted online from November 2017 to December 2017. This national study included 857 transgender MSM between the ages of 18 and 60 (65.3% were under 30). Participants were surveyed to determine their HIV risk, PrEP use, and their bio-behavioral and psychosocial factors (depression, hazardous alcohol and drug use, dating/relationship status, and more). Participants must have self‐reported receptive anal sex or frontal/vaginal sex with a cis male sex partner in the past six months. The racially mixed group was 69.7% white, 25.5% mixed or other racial identity, and 4.8% black. Additionally, 22.1% of all participants reported Latinx heritage. All participants had been assigned female sex at birth and currently identify on the transmasculine spectrum (71.6% as male/transgender man, 28.4% as non-binary, and 32.6% as gay).

The study found that 84% of participants recognized that PrEP use was a way to prevent HIV acquisition. Approximately 55% reported higher risk factors which indicated a greater need for PrEP use. These included where they met their sex partners, not having sex exclusively with cis men, greater number of partners, and high alcohol and drug use. However, only one-third of those in the study had ever taken PrEP.

There could be a number of factors influencing lower PrEP use including a lack of health insurance, poor access to HIV testing, or delays in using prevention methods. Additionally, transgender MSM face the dual stigmas of both gender and sexual minority statuses (with higher levels of stigma for non-binary individuals). As such, they may have unique vulnerabilities that differ from cis MSM. Significant increases in HIV risk were found for those who identified as gay (vs. not), those with mental health and substance abuse issues, those in polyamorous relationships, and those stigmatized by their cis male sex partners.

Since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first oral drug for PrEP use in 2012, it has proven to be a safe and effective method of HIV prevention. While the CDC has PrEP indication guidelines for several populations in the HIV epidemic, transgender MSM is not one of them. Therefore, it is likely that this vulnerable group is being overlooked by medical providers due to the gap in CDC guidelines and research. This study included a large national sample size of transgender MSM—an at‐risk population about which little is known. Findings clearly show that transgender MSM will not only benefit from access to PrEP but also that HIV prevention research should include this population in future research. The study also demonstrates a need for greater education and public health interventions around the risk factors and vulnerabilities specific to this group.

The study “High risk and low uptake of pre‐exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV acquisition in a national online sample of transgender men who have sex with men in the United States” is available online: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/jia2.25391
