Remote Administration Considerations for Conventional and Computerized Clinical Outcome Assessments, Upcoming Webinar Hosted by Xtalks

Xtalks Life Science Webinars

Indeed, the use of remote administration solutions for COAs is likely only going to increase. Understanding the nuances behind these methods of data collection is vital in the future of clinical research.

As the COVID-19 pandemic spread, research teams worldwide quickly adapted study plans to safely continue research whenever possible. While some observational studies were put on hold entirely, other therapeutic trials were continued with many or all study activities occurring remotely. In some cases, clinical sites were able to remain open with temperature checks, hand washing and social distancing. Where feasible, remote administration of clinical outcomes assessments (COAs) was implemented in order to minimize the loss of data.

What were momentary adaptations have led many clinical trial teams to look longer-term at remote administration options and consider the value of virtual, decentralized, or direct-to-patient clinical trial study designs. Indeed, the use of remote administration solutions for COAs is likely only going to increase. Understanding the nuances behind these methods of data collection is vital in the future of clinical research.

In speaking with sponsors, license holders, technology partners and IRBs, our team has gained many perspectives and will share insights into successful implementation of remote COA administration for both computerized and traditional assessments. In this webinar, the speakers will outline important lessons learned to help guide participants’ teams through remote assessment solutions, as well as specific adaptation options for computerized and conventional assessments.

Join Chris Edgar, PhD, Senior Vice President, Clinical Science, Cogstate, Paul Maruff, PhD, Chief Science Officer, Cogstate, Eric Siemers, MD, Distinguished Medical Adviser, Cogstate and Pamela Ventola, PhD, Senior Science Director, Pediatrics and Rare Disease, Cogstate in a live webinar on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at 1pm EDT.

Cosmetic Dentistry from an Expert Ensures Treatments Meet Patient Needs, says Dr. Sahar Verdi of Dental Specialists of California

Dr. Sahar Verdi of Dental Specialists of California

Some patients may have limited amounts of time to get their teeth looking the way they want but skilled dentists will understand how to best accommodate those situations

A June 8 article on Harper’s Bazaar Arabia reports on a plethora of tips for brides-to-be, and patients in general, who are seeking teeth whitening treatments. The article notes that those wanting optimal results should not wait until right before their big event as the best results generally come from multiple treatments that require a few weeks to achieve their full impact. The article notes that this is not to say that professional teeth whitening treatment won’t offer immediate results – rather, it’s that patients will achieve their best results if they work with their dentist over several visits as this can deliver the right shade across all their teeth as well as a healthy look and feel. Board-certified Periodontist and Cosmetic Dentist Sahar Verdi, D.D.S. of Dental Specialists of California largely agrees, saying that professional-grade teeth whitening treatments vary and that while multiple treatments do have a higher chance of delivering the results that patients ultimately want, patients can sometimes achieve dramatic results with a single treatment. She adds that deciding factors include the skill of the dentist as well as how advanced the treatment is.

Dr. Verdi says that professional teeth whitening often comes in multiple forms, including both in-office and take-home kits. Both options work very well for the majority of patients, she adds, while combining treatments may even further enhance final results. On the topic of patients who may be concerned about how long it takes for a procedure to achieve its maximum impact, such as soon-to-be-brides, Dr. Verdi notes that, provided patients have realistic expectations.

Beyond a dentist’s abilities and access to advanced treatment, Dr. Verdi notes that a patient’s lifestyle and dental care will also play a significant role in how well a whitening treatment may work. Dr. Verdi says that skilled dentists will be able to figure out which approach, or approaches, best suit a patient through careful examination. Even if it turns out that veneers or other prosthetics are necessary, there’s almost always an effective teeth whitening solution for patients and it’s simply up to the dentist to figure out what that is.

Dr. Verdi adds that, regardless of patients’ dental issues or timeframes, there’s always a solution she can provide to ensure all patients can finally get the healthy and beautiful smiles they dream of.

David N. Maine, M.D., Becomes President & CEO of Mercy Health Services

Dr. David Maine, President & CEO, Mercy Health Services

Dr. David Maine, President & CEO, Mercy Health Services

“Dr. Maine is uniquely qualified to bolster and further expand Mercy’s award-winning clinical programs, enhancing Mercy’s singular position as an independent, Catholic health system with statewide reach,” said Sister Helen Amos, RSM, Executive Chair of the Mercy Health Services Board of Trustees.

David N. Maine, M.D. is the new President & CEO of Mercy Health Services (MHS), effective July 1st, 2020. In January 2020, the Mercy Health Services Board of Trustees named Dr. Maine as Mercy’s future President & CEO following Thomas R. Mullen’s decision to retire after 28 years of successful service. Dr. Maine’s appointment marks the first time a physician has led the hospital and health system in its 145-year history. Mercy Health Services is the parent of Mercy Medical Center, a university-affiliated hospital in Downtown Baltimore founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1874.

“As a longtime Mercy physician leader, Dr. “For more than a decade at Mercy, Dr. Maine has consistently demonstrated clinical and business excellence, compassion for our patients, and a deep personal commitment to our mission and values. He’s exactly the right leader at the right time for Mercy.”

“I am honored and humbled to be selected by the Board of Trustees to follow in Tom’s footsteps as President & CEO of Mercy Health Services,” Dr. David Maine said. “As a result of Sister Helen’s and Tom’s leadership over the years, Mercy is blessed with outstanding physicians, providers, nurses, staff and a strong team of executive leaders all committed to moving Mercy forward for many years to come,” Dr. Maine said. “In addition, Mercy has established itself as the premier physician-friendly health system in the region where physicians feel the freedom to practice medicine in the way they know is best for their patients and that has translated to high-quality care with our patients at the center of everything we do.”

“Mercy has become a strong regional health system through the creation of Centers of Excellence led by renowned physicians who developed nationally-recognized clinical programs and by building a large network of high-quality primary and specialty care sites, downtown and around the beltway,” Mr. Mullen said. “The selection of Dr. Maine is a natural extension of Mercy’s physician-driven culture and our mission to serve patients throughout the region within a community of compassionate care. I wish him the very best as he leads Mercy into the future.”

Dr. David Maine, 43, has served as Executive Vice President for Mercy Health Services since October 2019, responsible for all MHS operations, overseeing the Medical Center, specialty and primary care physician networks, and Mercy affiliates. Prior to assuming the Executive Vice President role, he was Executive Vice President of Mercy’s Physician Enterprise, focusing on the growth of its physician network. Dr. Maine has also served as President of Medical Staff; as Senior Vice President of Clinical Transformation, leading Mercy’s efforts to launch the SurgCenter of Towson; and since 2007, as Medical Director of The Center for Interventional Pain Medicine at Mercy, perennially earning distinction as a Baltimore magazine “Top Doctor”.

Dr. Maine lives in Pikesville, Maryland with his wife, also a physician, and their two children. He was born the son of Jewish-Iraqi refugees who fled Iraq for Europe in 1972 due to the ongoing persecution of the religious minority. With the assistance of the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, an international refugee aid organization, Dr. Maine’s family eventually immigrated to the United States, settling in Rochester, New York in 1974. (Learn more about Dr. David Maine’s story).

Dr. Maine attended local public schools in Irondequoit, New York. He then matriculated at the University of Rochester School of Arts and Science and the University of Rochester School of Medicine graduating in 2002 with Alpha Omega Alpha honors. He completed his residency in Anesthesiology and his fellowship in Interventional Pain Medicine at The Johns Hopkins Hospital and is Board Certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine.

“With Dr. Maine taking the helm, I have no doubt Mercy will continue its special commitment to the poor and underserved and remain a shining beacon of light and hope for our City,” said Baltimore Archbishop William Lori. “We are grateful for Sister Helen Amos’ continuing service as Executive Chair of the Board of Trustees and Mercy’s ongoing promise to remain an independent, locally-governed health system, fully committed to its Catholic identity.”

“Mercy is well-positioned under the leadership of Dr. David Maine as the new President and CEO to carry forward Mercy’s mission and values as inspired by the life of our founder, Catherine McAuley,” said Sister Pat Coward, RSM, Health Ministry Liaison for the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, South Central Community. “We look forward to working with Dr. Maine to continue to further our health care ministry for the people of Baltimore.”

Founded in 1874 by the Sisters of Mercy, Mercy Medical Center is a university-affiliated hospital with a national reputation for women’s health care. For more information about Mercy, visit http://www.mdmercy.com and MDMercyMedia on FACEBOOK and TWITTER.
