Vaping Linked to Infertility; Fertility Expert Weighs In

Fertility CARE (Center of Assisted Reproduction and Endocrinology): The IVF Center provides patient-centered, evidence-based, and individual customized reproductive care in a comfortable and compassionate setting.

Dr. Mark Trolice underscores the harmful effects of vaping on fertility.

“There is a misconception that e-cigarettes are safe to use during pregnancy. Anyone on their fertility journey should avoid the use of nicotine altogether.”

A study recently published in the Journal of the Endocrine Society suggests that women who use e-cigarettes may face difficulties in becoming pregnant, and that exposure to vaping could cause permanent health complications for the fetus [1]. Dr. Mark Trolice, Director of Fertility CARE: The IVF Center, notes that smoking regular cigarettes is already contraindicated for women seeking to become pregnant, and that vaping should be as well. “E-cigarettes are probably just as harmful to pregnancy and fertility as traditional cigarettes because they both have similar amounts of nicotine,” Dr. Trolice said. “There is a misconception that e-cigarettes are safe to use during pregnancy. Anyone on their fertility journey should avoid the use of nicotine altogether.”

In the new study, which was conducted by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, mice were exposed to smoke from electronic cigarettes five times a week. This smoke exposure equaled the amount of smoke inhalation received by people who smoke e-cigarettes regularly. After four months of testing, researchers found that the exposed mice experienced what were described as significant delays in pregnancy and implantation [2].

Implantation, notes Dr. Trolice, is the first stage of pregnancy when the embryo adheres to the wall of the uterus and begins receiving oxygen and nutrients from the mother. The director of the new study indicated that while more research is needed, it seems likely that e-cigarette exposure in utero can cause lifelong changes to the fetal DNA and to fetal immune cardiovascular and nervous systems in mice [3].

These findings, says Dr. Trolice, come on the heels of a series of recent announcements of a mysterious and potentially fatal respiratory illness tied to vaping. As of mid-October, U.S. health officials had confirmed 33 deaths and 1,479 confirmed and probable cases so far. Kroger Company, Walgreens Boots Alliance Inc. and Walmart Inc. have said they would stop selling e-cigarettes in their stores, and the Chinese ecommerce firm Alibaba Group has announced that it will stop selling e-cigarette components in the United States [4].

The journey to fertility,” says Dr. Trolice, “can be stressful, particularly for those who experience difficulty in conceiving. It is recommended to engage in healthy stress reduction activities such as exercise, yoga, and meditation – vaping is not one of them.”

“I strongly urge everyone—particularly those who might desire future childbearing—to stay away from vaping,” said Dr. Trolice. “It is a momentary fad that could ruin both your health, your opportunity to naturally conceive in the future and the health of your baby.”

PMB celebrates grand opening of Goodyear Medical Plaza, formerly a movie theater, in Goodyear, Ariz

News Image

PMB converted the former Dickinson Palm Valley 14 movie theater at 1325 N. Litchfield Road in Goodyear, Ariz., into the 50,000 square foot Goodyear Medical Plaza.

PMB is proud of this beautiful facility and the innovation, collaboration and creative solutions that went into this exciting adaptive reuse project.

PMB, one of the nation’s leading real estate owners and developers across the continuum of care, is pleased to announce the completion of Goodyear Medical Plaza, a uniquely challenging adaptive reuse project that converted a 50,000-square-foot 1980s-era multiplex movie theater to a modern medical use.

A grand opening celebration for the project, which is currently 90 percent leased, is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, Oct. 24.

The repurposed facility is located at 1325 N. Litchfield Road in Goodyear, immediately west of the Abrazo West Campus, a 188-bed acute-care community hospital and Level 1 Trauma Center operated by Phoenix-based Abrazo Community Health Network.

“PMB is proud of this beautiful facility and the innovation, collaboration and creative solutions that went into this exciting adaptive reuse project,” says Mark Toothacre, President of the San Diego-based firm.

“The finished product incorporates high-profile features that rival new, build-to-suit medical office buildings, but our strategic adaptive reuse approach delivered a gorgeous facility on a construction schedule half that of a ground-up project. The newly repurposed project creates proximate, modern medical office space further providing growth space for Abrazo’s affiliated medical group.”

Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord also praises the project.

“We are so excited to see the former cinema building come to life again,” Mayor Lord says. “Goodyear Medical Plaza is a perfect example of repurposing an empty building and turning it into vibrant office space. The newly revitalized structure enhances the area and brings new jobs and opportunity for growth to the Goodyear Medical Innovation Corridor.

“We are fortunate to have these talented physicians and medical businesses offering quality healthcare to our residents. Thank you PMB for your continued investment in Goodyear.”

PMB pursued the unique conversion in response to the need for Class A medical office space in this highly constrained on-campus market. The new building expands the Abrazo West Campus wound care program, and provides such outpatient services as imaging, multi-specialty care, internal medicine, pain management, wound care and physical therapy.

PMB retained the former theater’s generous 12-foot wide common hallways to create a patient-centric public corridor and added a beautiful and completely reworked building entry. PMB also took advantage of the 22-foot ceiling heights to create open spaces with great future flexibility.

In this adaptive reuse, PMB mitigated a number of challenges, including:

  • Space planning around load bearing demising walls between theaters by carefully planning clinical pods
  • Reconfiguring the common and tenant areas to eliminate elevation changes in the existing floors.
  • Modifying an extremely dated theater exterior to create a stylish, modern appearance with a dramatic building entry.

Goodyear, Arizona is a dynamic and rapidly growing city, recently ranked No. 22 as one of the “Best Places to Live” in the U.S. by Money.com. The city continues to put its name on the map with award-winning companies choosing to call Goodyear home including Fortune 500 companies such as Amazon, Microsoft, Nike, DaVita Inc., HD Supply and Darden Restaurants. PMB in yet another industry-leading company investing in the Goodyear community to positively impact health and well-being.

The project team included globally recognized architect SmithGroup and Arizona-based general contractor AK-SAR-Ben Companies Inc.

Hospital Billing Practices are Under a Microscope and Providers are Responding to the Public and Political Scrutiny

https://www.prweb.com/

Healthcare providers are learning that aggressive patient collection tactics damage their brands and alienate healthcare consumers

With patients on the hook for so much more of the cost, a provider’s reputation matters. Suing patients to collect from them and other aggressive collection tactics have no place in a business-building strategy. – Kevin Fleming, CEO, Loyale Healthcare

In recent months, U.S. news media have been paying closer-than-usual attention to the ways hospitals bill and collect from patients. The issues range from surprise bills to overzealous collection methods that have gone so far as to seize paychecks and tax refunds – even claim homes. This scrutiny has fueled mounting public anger, prompting U.S. lawmakers to launch an investigation into provider billing practices. The focus of this anger has also expanded to include the private equity owners of some U.S. healthcare companies.

These forms of behavior turn the provider-patient relationship on its head – from care giver to financial adversary. Even more damaging, aggressive collection tactics frighten prospective patients. Concerned and uncertain about what they will owe and how they will pay for the care they need; many decide to skip care entirely. Research results vary on this topic, but the number of people who avoid or delay care because of concerns about their ability to afford it range from fifty percent to sixty-four percent.

There are two sides to this story. Healthcare providers are in a tough spot, too. They are expected to deliver exceptional clinical care and required to meet high regulatory standards. At the same time, they are struggling to collect from financially burdened patients with systems that were developed decades ago to collect from insurance companies. The solution to this problem, it seems, depends on providers’ willingness to abandon adversarial tactics and embrace a more personal, compassionate approach.

Healthcare in a Consumer-Driven Market: Brand Matters

You may have heard the expression, “there’s no such thing as bad publicity”, but ask any executive in an industry that relies on the good will of the buying public and they’ll tell you otherwise. Trusted companies like Disney, Apple, Nike and others spend untold millions in time and money to maintain, protect and grow brands that cultivate long-term consumer relationships. How these companies are perceived in the marketplace is fundamental to their continued success.

Healthcare now finds itself in a similar spot. When the insurance companies did most of the paying, a hospital’s brand was primarily clinical in nature and the financial experience didn’t matter that much. Patients chose the providers that were in their plan’s network, the provider delivered treatment and the payer paid. But now that patients are on the hook for so much more of the cost, they’re behaving differently. Suddenly, a provider’s reputation matters. In such an environment, suing patients to collect from them and other aggressive collection tactics have no place in a business building strategy.

Instead, more and more providers are developing consumer-centric, retail-like experiences. Recognizing that patient preference will be the principle driver of volume and revenue, they’re reimagining the patient experience from new, much larger perspectives. HCA Healthcare is one example. One of the largest and most successful healthcare brands in America, HCA is focused on constantly improving the patient’s financial journey.

Loyale Healthcare has partnered with over 12,000 healthcare facility customers representing in excess of $50 Billion in annual net patient revenue and forty million patient encounters. With a focus on delivering end-to-end functionality, our solution supports six key patient financial elements, all of which contribute to improved patient financial experiences and provider brand value:

1.    Price transparency – One of the biggest problems facing the healthcare industry’s transition into a consumer-first operating model is its pervasive inability to provide patients with reliable upfront estimates for care. In every other purchase decision we consumers make, price is one of the most important considerations. Until now, healthcare has been exempt, but those days are numbered. The government and powerful new competitors like Haven Healthcare, CVS Health and others will see to that.

2.    Payment planning – When a patient knows early what their care is likely to cost, and how much their out-of-pocket will be, they can plan for the expense. With Loyale’s Affordability Workbench™, patients have access to multiple payment options that include discounts for early or prompt payment; short-term, no interest payment schedules; or longer-term payment plans through a third-party lender. Serving themselves online, or working with hospital staff, patients can get the care they need while focusing on payments they can afford, not just worrying about what they’ll owe.

3.    Personalized digital & human communications – Patients are often slow to react to traditional hospital billing communications. Whether sent by mail, email or online over the hospital’s patient portal, form letters do nothing to engage patients or provide the clarity they need to understand and act on their financial obligations. Loyale’s personalized digital communication platform, on the other hand, automatically segments patient populations. By integrating with patient preferences, we then deliver the right messages at the right frequency over the right channel – email, text, chat or by initiating a human conversation.

4.    One Bed. One Bill – Ask most patients and they’ll tell you… they’re confused, frustrated and angry about their healthcare bills. “It was one stay in one bed for one thing. Why did I get eleven bills?” With the Loyale platform, Providers can now consolidate bills into one, comprehensive virtual “bill” presentation that patients can understand and act on. Loyale’s underlying technology takes care of making sure the payments get where they need to go.

5.    Seamless, holistic experiences – Healthcare has long separated patient experiences into two different categories; the clinical and the administrative/financial. But patients will tell you that they have just one care experience, and that experience includes every interaction the patient has with the provider, every time. That’s why Loyale integrates with the Provider’s clinical portal. Additionally, its provider-facing portal gives hospital staff and call centers the patient’s account view for easy problem solving.

6.    Provider facing tools to improve productivity and increase revenues – Beginning well before treatment, the Loyale patient financial engagement platform collects and aggregates data to qualify patients. Then the system automatically generates intelligent workflows that reduce staff work and improve the probability of patient payment. Additionally, the tool’s highly configurable reporting and dashboard functionality is now giving health systems the “best visibility into patient-pay revenue cycle they have ever had”. This invaluable business intelligence is making it possible for leadership to find and promote best practices and tackle underperforming practices.

By delivering patient-first financial experiences, healthcare providers across the country are finding that patients are eager to engage. This leads to dramatic increases in patient self-service, reduced costs for traditional paper billing and collections and higher patient-pay revenue. Best of all, it responds to patient expectations for transparency, clarity and inclusion. By partnering with them in the financial dimension of care, healthcare can now provide patients and their communities with healthcare financial experiences they can understand and control.

The alliance will not only allow us to offer more value to our readers through a greater breadth of information on ACCC activities and research, but will also increase ACCC’s visibility and impact in the oncology and value-based care fields.

HMP, a leader in health care events and education, today announced that its peer-reviewed publication, Journal of Clinical Pathways®, has formed a strategic partnership with the Association of Community Cancer Centers (ACCC), a leading education and advocacy organization for the cancer care community.

Through this alliance, readers of the journal will benefit greatly from regular columns from ACCC and its membership on topics such as multidisciplinary approaches to care delivery, reimbursement issues, trends in cancer care, the evolving practice of oncology pharmacy, and integrating new technologies and therapies into practice. In addition, ACCC will gain significant reach to more value-based cancer care decision-makers through the journal’s robust print and digital distribution channels.

“We are very pleased to collaborate with ACCC,” said Kara A. Journal of Clinical Pathways addresses the potential of clinical pathways to address rising health care costs, mitigate patient risk, reduce variability, and achieve better, more predictable clinical outcomes. In this unique publication, physicians, payers, and health care executives share methods, insights, and results of projects to design, implement, evaluate, and update clinical pathways in their organizations. Journal of Clinical Pathways is specifically positioned to address the design and implementation of value-based care approaches; the use of clinical and real-world evidence to drive treatment decision-making; and the early learnings and experiences of managed care professionals and health care organizations as they implement new models for achieving high-value care. “The advertising campaign is well-suited to the integration of Health Quest and Western Connecticut Health Network,” said Michael Samuelson, vice president of marketing and internal communications for Nuvance Health. “The advertisements depict Nuvance Health’s relentless drive to uncover new ways to help the community be healthy and stay healthy,” he said.

“We’re an organization comprised of imaginative people who never settle, attracting those who have the courage and agility to forge new and better paths together, the ingenuity to reinvent, the curiosity to ask questions and the empathy to truly listen to patients, families and community members,” Samuelson said.

Launching in mid-October, the campaign includes a television commercial, radio spots and print ads running throughout Connecticut and the Hudson Valley, in addition to billboards and digital display ads in shopping malls, transportation hubs, movie theaters and more.

Nuvance Health was formed April 1, when Western Connecticut Health Network and Health Quest Systems Inc. combined. The system’s seven hospitals and 2,600 doctors serve an area that encompasses about 1.5 million residents.
