PAINWeekEnd in Charleston, South Carolina, Offers CE/CME Education to Address the Opioid Abuse Public Health Crisis

News Image

As more and more of the fog is lifted from the opioid crisis that we face as a nation, it is extremely important for healthcare professionals to stay abreast of best practices in pain management…

PAINWeekEnd on November 16 at the Charleston Marriott, 170 Lockwood Blvd., in South Carolina, will be an educational and exciting program providing busy clinicians and allied healthcare practitioners with 6.0 hours of relevant, practical instruction in the management of chronic pain.

Charleston County, South Carolina, had the 3rd highest amount of pain medications dispensed in the entire country from 2006 to 2012. During that span, South Carolina dispensed almost 2 billion opioid pills. Where do healthcare professionals even begin to attempt to improve patient care, and ultimately save lives? At PAINWeekEnd, faculty member Mark Garofoli, PharmD, MBA, BCGP, CPE, will present Pain Management at Ground Zero. He states, “As more and more of the fog is lifted from the opioid crisis that we face as a nation, it is extremely important for healthcare professionals to stay abreast of best practices in pain management in order to prevent the countless speedbumps (such as limited time and patient mindsets) from swaying one away from improving patient care. I look forward to helping PAINWeekEnd attendees wrap their minds around the vast amount of information, and misinformation, within not only the ‘opioid crisis’ but the War on Drugs overall as we know it, or think we know it.” Dr. Garofoli will also present Thug Drugs, a rapid-fire review of dozens of common substances of abuse.

Other course topics to be offered at PAINWeekEnd Charleston include The Gang that Couldn’t Shoot Straight: Reconsidering the CDC Guideline; Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathic Pain: Evaluating Treatment Options; Migraines and More; and Osteoarthritis Pain: Past, Present, and Future.

Commercially supported activities—addressing a range of product, disease state, and medical information topics—will also be presented.

For more information about this or other regional conferences, and to register for $129, go to the PAINWeekEnd website. BONUS: PAINWeekEnd registrants may register for the 2020 PAINWeek National Conference, September 8-12, in Las Vegas, for $200 off the regular online published price.

Dr. Brock Pumphrey Offers LANAP and LAPIP Laser Procedures to Treat Gum Disease Around Teeth and Implants

https://www.prweb.com/

Dr. Brock Pumphrey

With the LANAP and LAPIP protocols, we are able to address the very real and serious problem of gum disease while also keeping our patients comfortable due to their minimally invasive nature.

Dr. Brock Pumphrey of Atlanta Center for Advanced Periodontics, Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry is now certified in the LANAP and LAPIP protocols. Dr. Pumphrey is on the leading edge of periodontics, treating patients with a minimally invasive laser treatment with favorable and predictable results to save their teeth and implants and help regrow bone lost to periodontitis peri-implantitis.

“Our top priority is your dental health and smile, and part of that commitment includes incorporating state of the art technology and cutting edge techniques to provide the best results possible for our patients,” said Dr. Pumphrey. “With the LANAP and LAPIP protocols, we are able to address the very real and serious problem of gum disease while also keeping our patients comfortable due to their minimally invasive nature.”

The LANAP protocol can be performed in as little as one treatment session, and is safe to use on patients with health concerns such as diabetes, heart disease, and hemophilia, without discontinuing medication. It is the only scientifically proven laser gum disease treatment FDA cleared to regenerate the bone and tissues lost to gum disease.

The LAPIP protocol is a first line treatment approach for failing implants or peri-implantitis as it addresses the underlying causes affecting the health of both the bone and the gum tissue around the implant. A fiber the width of 3 human hairs is inserted between the implant and the gum. Laser energy kills bacteria, vaporizes cement, and stimulates stems cells found in your bone to reduce the bacterial infection and promote healing.

Gum disease is a chronic bacterial infection that rarely has any symptoms in its early stages. Despite the lack of symptoms or pain, the disease can still cause serious damage to your mouth, leading to loss of teeth, which has been tied to decreased lifespan. Additionally, several other serious illnesses like cancer, heart disease and diabetes have suggested links to gum disease.

For information on the LANAP and LAPIP gum disease treatments, call Atlanta Center for Advanced Periodontics, Cosmetic & Implant Dentistry at (404) 982-4797 for an appointment.

“In spite of recent advances in medical care, adults with Down syndrome continue to face very significant challenges, including a markedly increased risk of Alzheimer disease. We hope that this work will lead to better treatments for older people with Down syndrome,” said Brian Chicoine, MD

On the Advocate Lutheran General Hospital campus, Park Ridge, Illinois, Advocate Medical Group Adult Down Syndrome Center researchers are enrolling adults with Down Syndrome who are older than 25 in the Longitudinal Investigation for Enhancing Down Syndrome Research Study (LIFE-DSR). The goal of the study is to better understand the health issues people with Down syndrome face as they age, particularly their risk for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

“In spite of recent advances in medical care, adults with Down syndrome continue to face very significant challenges, including a markedly increased risk of Alzheimer disease,” said Brian Chicoine, MD, site principal investigator for Advocate Health Care and cofounder and medical director for the Advocate Medical Group Adult Down Syndrome Center. “We are excited to be participating in the LIFE-DSR study and hope that this work will lead to better treatments for older people with Down syndrome.”

Diagnosing Alzheimer’s is complex, particularly in people with Down syndrome. With no single test currently available, diagnosis is based on an individual’s history, physical examination and cognitive testing. The LIFE-DSR study will observe adults with Down syndrome to validate tests of cognition and function designed specifically for adults with Down syndrome. The clinical trials network will also collect blood samples from all study participants to aid in the development of blood tests for Alzheimer disease.

The clinical trials network is sponsored by Alana Foundation and biopharmaceutical companies, AC Immune and Lundbeck with $3 million in initial funding. LuMind IDSC Foundation directs the clinical trials network. Through a research grant, Advocate received more than $300,000 from LuMind IDSC to participate as the first clinical trial site in Illinois.

“We believe that the clinical trials network will open up greater access to clinical research for people with Down syndrome and that is why LuMind IDSC is excited to be providing funding and leadership for the first study in the network, the LIFE-DSR study,” said Hampus Hillerstrom, LuMind IDSC chief executive officer.

Researchers will enroll more than 270 adults with Down Syndrome older than 25 in the LIFE-DSR study nationwide and follow them for two years. Eligible study subjects must have a study partner, and both must provide consent to participate. Participants who enroll through Advocate Health Care will be compensated $50 for each completed visit (three total) and reimbursed for up to $50 for travel costs for visits.

“We’re pleased to collaborate on this innovative trial designed for patients with Down syndrome,” said Katie Wozniak, director of specialty research for Advocate Research Institute. “It is a privilege to serve this important community and to partner in efforts that may advance their future care and diagnostic testing.”

Shady Grove Fertility (SGF) to Host Donor Egg Treatment Informational Seminar in London, 3 November 2019 at the Grosvenor House Hotel

More than 85 percent of participants in SGF’s Shared Risk 100% Refund Program for Donor Egg Treatment take home a baby. The rest receive a full refund* to pursue other family building options.

Shady Grove Fertility (SGF), a leader in reproductive medicine, will be hosting a complimentary patient seminar in the UK to discuss their renowned International Donor Egg Program. Shady Grove Fertility Founder and UK Program Director, Michael J. Levy, M.D. will outline the donor egg treatment process and discuss the specifics about this integrated program that allows patients to access exceptional services provided locally by multiple, local clinics and the donor egg registry available only at SGF.

Among the many benefits of SGF’s program, couples and individuals choose a medically, genetically, and psychologically prescreened egg donor who is ready to cycle and donate, without the wait. While SGF’s donor registry de-identifies the donors, the donor registry provides prospective recipients (the intended parents) with a wealth of information about the donor, including, in many cases, adult photos.

SGF, a pioneer in offering an IVF treatment financial guarantee for donor egg, makes treatment affordable through their exclusive Shared Donor Egg Program and Shared Risk 100% Refund Program for Donor Egg Treatment. With an IVF treatment guarantee, participants take home a baby or receive a 100% refund. Combined, these two programs offer patients up to six donor egg cycles for one flat amount at a 40 percent savings. SGF’s Donor Egg Program provides patients with a highly effective treatment to overcome infertility, with a 60 percent clinical pregnancy rate per embryo transfer.

Amanda Segal, SGF’s International Patient Liaison, will be onsite in London to discuss the benefits, success rates, and financial affordability of SGF’s program. Attendees of the free seminar will learn about traveling abroad for treatment, with only two trips required. In addition, former SGF patients will share their experience and journey to parenthood through this unique program.

The event will take place on 3 November 2019 at 18:00 (6 PM – 8 PM) at the Grosvenor House, a JW Marriott Hotel, Burlington Suite. 86-90 Park Lane, London W1K 7TN. Register for the seminar to learn more.

“We feel so fortunate to have found Dr. Levy. He is a wonderfully gifted doctor and so very calm and reassuring throughout the process. We are currently 5 months pregnant and have had such a positive experience with SGF,” shared a former Dr. Levy patient.

BabelBark® Drives Continuity of Care When Hospice Care is Needed

https://www.prweb.com/

BabelBark is a unique digital platform dedicated to connecting families to the many facets of their pet’s life.

BabelBark’s two-way pet journal is a critical time-saving tool that can reduce the stress on the entire care team while aggregating all care providers’ observations on one platform.

BabelBark, Inc., a pet-related software developer, unveiled during the International Association of Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC) conference in October how its asynchronous two-way pet journal assists veterinary care providers and pet parents when hospice care and palliative is needed. BabelBark is the first technology platform to work closely with hospice workers to ensure its pet journal could be easily updated by both medical professionals and caregivers to ensure information can be shared easily in an effort to enhance the quality of life of pets.

Sharing of medical information and overall status of a pet is critical for veterinary hospice and palliative caregivers, as it can make a big difference in the level and quality of end-of-life care.

“It is sad, but in situations where a difficult diagnosis or terminal disease is shared with a pet owner, the stress can be so overwhelming that pet owners easily forget or misunderstand medical guidance,” says Dr. Mary Gardner, BabelBark advisory board member and cofounder of Lap of Love. “We need tools like BabelBark’s two-way pet journal to share updates about the pet’s condition and medical records, send videos of how the pet is acting, and get advice from their veterinary care team. This is a critical time-saving tool that can reduce the stress on the entire care team while aggregating all care providers’ observations on one platform.”

Babelbark’s pet journal includes a list of medications and compliance logs, diet, nutrition, and the opportunity to record weight changes. For example, if a hospice patient visits a specialist and a new diet recommendation or medication is started, every member of their care team on the platform is notified in the pet journal. This makes the continuity of care seamless and efficient.

“The ease of the pet journaling allows for the sharing of information across providers all under one easy to use system, which will revolutionize the way hospice and palliative care providers practice medicine and share their expertise with their clients and patients,” says Gardner.

For more information, a demonstration and a free trial of the BabelBark system, visit http://www.babelvet.com.

Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month Draws Attention to Life-Threatening, Often Misdiagnosed Disease

“Although treatment options exist to help people with PH, early diagnosis is still a problem for many individuals and that is why awareness of the disease is so critical.” – Karen A. Fagan, M.D., PHA Board of Trustees chair and chief of pulmonary and critical care medicine, Univ. of South Alabama

Each November, the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) launches a national campaign to raise awareness about pulmonary hypertension (PH), a progressive lung disease defined by high blood pressure in the lungs that can cause right heart failure and death.

In 2019, Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month focuses on promoting risk factors and symptoms by featuring “PHaces of Hope,” courageous individuals who live with PH. The complex disease is thought to affect an estimated 25 million adults and children worldwide, and can occur among those with left-heart disease, along with other associated conditions such as sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or scleroderma, or from congestive heart issues among babies and young children. The disease is significantly underdiagnosed and misunderstood. For example, many people with PH are misdiagnosed with more common illnesses, such as asthma. Symptoms, including shortness of breath, fatigue and chest pain, are not necessarily specific to PH and can lead to dangerous delays in a correct diagnosis.

Although no cure exists, early diagnosis and proper treatment can extend and improve a patient’s quality of life. In addition, advances in treatment and a better understanding of PH have led to effective therapies, better quality of life and improved survival for many types of PH, once diagnosed.

“Although treatment options exist to help people with PH, early diagnosis is still a problem for many individuals and that is why awareness of the disease is so critical,” said Karen A. Fagan, M.D., PHA Board of Trustees chair, professor of internal medicine and pharmacology, and chief of pulmonary and critical care medicine at the University of South Alabama, Mobile, Ala. “Our campaign targets awareness among those in the medical community as well as patients, since early diagnosis can lead to better outcomes.”

The “PHaces of Hope” campaign celebrates a community of individuals with PH, along with their caregivers and health care professionals, who continue to inspire and empower others.

PHA asks that people in the PH community submit either a short written or video story by filling out a form at PHAssociation.org/ShareYourHope. Stories from the campaign will be shared on PHA’s social media channels and on the PHA website at PHAssociation.org/PHaces.

PHA’s outreach during November includes social media (including its special “PHaces of Hope” campaign), advocacy and educational components to drive awareness and ultimately a cure for PH. More information about PH, the campaign and how to spread awareness can be found at: PHAssociation.org/AwarenessMonth.

PHA is grateful for the sponsorship support provided by Actelion Pharmaceuticals U.S., Inc. for Pulmonary Hypertension Awareness Month.

About the Pulmonary Hypertension Association

Headquartered in Silver Spring, Md., the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) is the country’s oldest and largest nonprofit patient association dedicated to the pulmonary hypertension (PH) community. Pulmonary hypertension is a rare, chronic and life-threatening disease of the lungs for which no cure currently exists. PHA’s mission is to extend and improve the lives of those affected by PH. To achieve this mission, PHA engages people with PH and their families, caregivers, health care providers, and researchers worldwide who work together to advocate for the PH community, provide support to patients, caregivers and families, offer up-to-date education and information on PH, improve quality patient care, and fund and promote research. “Forbes Hospital is one of the region’s best kept secrets for the high quality of its cardiovascular medicine and cardiothoracic surgery programs,” said Dr. Bajona. “It’s a privilege to help continue that tradition and work alongside so many talented and dedicated cardiologists and other clinicians as we expand our footprint as a full service center for cardiovascular care in the eastern suburbs.”

Dr. Bajona specializes in complex heart diseases including aortic stenosis and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), among others, and performs aortic and mitral valve repair and replacements as well as heart transplant procedures.

“Dr. Bajona is an extremely talented cardiac surgeon and physician leader who has demonstrated a unique ability to envision, develop and formalize programs that provide effective, specialized treatment paths for patients,” said George Magovern, MD, chair, AHN Cardiovascular Institute. “His leadership prowess, paired with his clinical practice, will be an invaluable asset for AHN and the local community.”

Tapping into his previous position, Dr. Bajona will also stand up a robust clinical program for the treatment of HCM, a complex heart disease that reduces blood flow and ranks as the top cause for sudden cardiac death in people under 30 years old.

Prior to joining AHN, Dr. Bajona served as the surgical director of the HCM program at the University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. At UT Southwestern Medical Center, he built a nationally-recognized, multi-disciplinary referral center for patients diagnosed with this disease. It was the first certified surgical center for the treatment of HCM in the state.

Certified by the European Board of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery (FETCS), Dr. Bajona is an active member of several national and international professional organizations, including the Society of Thoracic Surgeons, American Heart Association, the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Italian Society of Cardiac Surgery.

A graduate of the University of Ferrara Medical School in Italy, Dr. Bajona completed post-graduate training with fellowships at the University of Toronto, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, New York.
