Nash Family Dentistry Provides Stable Dentures to Jackson, MS with Implant Supported Dentures

Drs. Kenneth and Jonathan Nash, Dentists Serving Jackson, MS

Drs. Kenneth and Jonathan Nash Restore Chewing Power with Implant Supported Dentures in Jackson, MS

Functionally, a dental implant can be restored to act as a natural tooth. You can eat what you want to eat with it and you treat it as a natural tooth, flossing and brushing it every day.

Denture-wearing patients in Jackson, MS can stabilize their prosthesis at Nash Family Dentistry through implant supported dentures. Dental implants give denture-wearers a more stable, comfortable and oftentimes permanent new smile as a solution to missing teeth. Implant supported dentures offer numerous benefits to patients over traditional dentures, bridges or flippers.

“The implant is simply a titanium screw that fits into the space that is left from missing teeth,” says Dr. Jonathan Nash. “Functionally, a dental implant can be restored to act as a natural tooth. You can eat what you want to eat with it and you treat it as a natural tooth, flossing and brushing it every day.”

Implant supported dentures are designed to look, feel and function as close to natural teeth as possible. With just two to four dental implants placed into the jawbone, a lifelike prosthesis can be attached and held firmly in place by the implants. Depending on your needs or what the dentists recommend, this new implant supported denture can be permanently attached or allowed to be removed at night or for cleaning. With either option, implant supported dentures provide patients with many benefits, including:

  • No slipping, shifting or falling out
  • Restoration of 55 to 90 percent bite strength
  • Retained facial appearance
  • Improved comfort
  • Lasting many years

Dental implants work by placing a biocompatible titanium post to the jawbone where teeth are missing. With implant supported dentures, only two to four implants are needed, and they are placed in areas of the jaw with the most bone, often making bone grafting treatments unnecessary. Once fully healed, these implants can support a denture by “snapping” into it, making it stable in the mouth. Traditional dentures only provide patients with around ten percent bite strength, but when attached to dental implants, patients are restored with up to 90 percent of their natural biting and chewing power.

For many patients, implant supported dentures are a life changing solution to missing teeth. Being able to bite, chew, talk and act comfortably in front of others drastically improves self-esteem and lifestyle. Nash Family Dentistry also can replace individual missing teeth with implants and treat peri-implantitis, an infection of the gum tissue around implants, so patients are able to protect their dental implant investment. To make implant supported denture surgery more gentle and easier for patients, the dentists offer soothing sedation dentistry, including oral sedation and nitrous oxide.

Those interested in securing their dentures with implant supported dentures in Jackson, MS are encouraged to contact Nash Family Dentistry by calling 601-634-1812 or visiting http://www.vicksburgdentist.com.

Children’s Tumor Foundation Announces FDA Accepts Submission for Selumetinib as Treatment for Neurofibromatosis and Grants Priority Review

News Image

“We believe that FDA approval of this treatment will not only help our patients, but will also open the door to increased interest in NF, as a validation of the power of working together to find cures for patients who most need them,” said Annette Bakker, PhD, Children’s Tumor Foundation President.

AstraZeneca and MSD (Merck) announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has granted acceptance to file status of its application for the MEK inhibitor selumetinib, for use in patients with plexiform neurofibromas, a common manifestation in the disease neurofibromatosis type one (NF1). The FDA’s acceptance of the application is a major milestone for selumetinib becoming the first ever approved treatment for NF patients. This follows previous designations from the FDA granting the treatment orphan drug status as well as breakthrough status, and now enters the drug into the FDA’s approval pipeline. The FDA also granted priority review, and a PDUFA (Prescription Drug User Fee Act) has been set for the second quarter of 2020.

This application follows comprehensive clinical testing of the drug in patients at the National Cancer Institute (NCI), a division of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In those clinical trials, over 70% of NF patients with inoperable plexiform neurofibromas saw tumor size reduction anywhere from 20-55% in size. In addition to both visible and actual tumor reduction, patients reported higher-quality physical function, improved mobility, and enhanced emotional and psychological status.

The first use of MEK inhibitors as a potential treatment for NF tumors came from an early-stage discovery by Children’s Tumor Foundation (CTF)-funded researchers, who showed that the repurposed oncology drug selumetinib could affect NF tumor size. Positive early clinical results were first reported at CTF’s annual scientific NF Conference in 2015, as well as in a subsequent publication in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Collaborative efforts among the NCI, the NIH, the NFRP-CDMRP (Neurofibromatosis Research Program of the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs), NTAP (Neurofibromatosis Therapeutic Consortium), and CTF ensured that this ‘MEK Story’ proceeded efficiently and expeditiously through proactive and strategic coordination, which included patient input in the mix. A soon-to-be-published paper on this unique collaboration, and its potential application for other disease areas, will appear in EMBO Molecular Medicine. Other types of MEK inhibitors are also now in clinical trial, including mirdametinib from SpringWorks Therapeutics, a company which CTF helped spin off from Pfizer.

“Today’s announcement from AstraZeneca and MSD/Merck is a huge step towards our ultimate dream – approved treatments for neurofibromatosis,” said Annette Bakker, PhD, President of the Children’s Tumor Foundation. “We believe that FDA approval of this treatment will not only help our patients, but will also open the door to increased interest in NF, as a validation of the power of working together to find cures for patients who most need them.”

Founded in 1978, the Children’s Tumor Foundation is the world’s largest nongovernmental funder of all forms of neurofibromatosis research in the world. Its collaborative and open-data research model has catalyzed new discoveries and in recent years helped triple the number of clinical trials for NF, identified new drug candidates for both NF1 and NF2, and established a unique worldwide consortium focused on pain.

Neurofibromatosis is a genetic disorder that affects 1 in 3,000 births of all populations equally, and causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body. Its devastating effects can cause blindness, deafness, bone abnormalities, disfigurement, learning disabilities, disabling pain, and cancer.

ASHA Becomes Part Of New Global Forum Focused On Hearing Loss

The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) has been accepted as a member of the new World Hearing Forum, a global network of stakeholders established by the World Health Organization (WHO) to promote ear and hearing care worldwide.

A major Forum task will be facilitating the implementation of World Health Assembly resolution WHA70.13 on “Prevention of deafness and hearing loss” http://apps.who.int/gb/ebwha/pdf_files/WHA70/A70_R13-en.pdf?ua=1 and supporting member states in that regard.

“We thank WHO for accepting ASHA as a Forum member and as such, we look forward to being active and collaborative,” ASHA President Shari Robertson, PhD, said. “Ample challenges to hearing health exist worldwide that warrant attention and action. It is exciting and encouraging to think they stand to be met by Forum members’ collective commitment and expertise.”

According to WHO, approximately 466 million people globally live with disabling hearing loss, 34 million of whom are children. The health agency also says 1.1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss due to exposure to noise in recreational settings and the use of personal audio devices—a number that is expected to grow considerably “unless action is taken to prevent and treat hearing loss” in WHO’s estimation.

Before becoming a Forum member, ASHA advised WHO on its Make Listening Safe campaign which, in concert with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations agency that facilitates international connectivity in communications networks, unveiled recently the first ever global standard for safe listening to personal audio devices:

https://www.asha.org/public/hearing/Noise-and-Hearing-Loss-Prevention/

Known as the WHO-ITU Global Standard for safe listening devices and systems, it recommends 80 decibels as the maximum safe level for adults using a personal audio device for 40 hours weekly, and 75 decibels as the safe maximum for children for the same amount of usage time. The standard stems from several years of research, input, and discussion by a cross-section of stakeholders from around the world.

Since the 1970s, hearing experts in the United States have cited 85 decibels as the maximum safe listening level, a limit that originated from what was considered safe for workers in occupational settings.

“ASHA recommends adhering to the new WHO-ITU safe listening standard when it comes to personal audio device use,” ASHA President Robertson said. “Among other things, it was developed with the use of such a device in mind instead of the experience of exposure to noise in an occupational setting.”

The World Hearing Forum opening Membership Assembly will be held December 4-5, 2019 in Geneva, Switzerland.

About the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA)

ASHA is the national professional, scientific, and credentialing association for 204,000 members and affiliates who are audiologists; speech-language pathologists; speech, language, and hearing scientists; audiology and speech-language pathology support personnel; and students. Cosmetic Town Explores the Growing Trend of “Medical Tourism” on CosmeticTown.com

Cosmetic surgery continues to be popular in the United States as 1.8-million cosmetic surgical procedures were performed in 2018. While patients continue to undergo cosmetic procedures all throughout the United States, the final price can be quite costly thanks to any fees charged by the doctor or the facility, anesthesia fees and the extent of the work that needs to be performed to achieve the desired results. Because of the high cost of plastic surgery procedures in the United States, there are a large number of patients traveling overseas to undergo cosmetic surgery because of lower prices. The growing medical phenomenon of traveling abroad for cosmetic surgery is known as “medical tourism”.

According to the senior editor of Cosmetic Town, “Medical tourism is growing in popularity as patients conduct research on the areas of the world where cosmetic surgery is available for lower prices. Many American patients like to travel abroad to have plastic surgery because they are able to have the treatment away from the view of family and friends. Because of the growing number of patients practicing medical tourism, we recently devoted a week of our news stories to exploring why more people are traveling abroad for cosmetic surgery.”

As with any type of cosmetic surgery procedure, there are some risks involved with medical tourism. The senior editor stated “patients should be aware of the fact that there are many countries that do not have the same medical standards as the United States. The doctors performing cosmetic surgery do not always have the same medical standards as doctors in the United States. The doctors might not be board-certified and the facilities may not be properly licensed for the procedures they offer. Because of these factors, patients need to do research to learn more about the doctor or facility they are interested in visiting in order to ensure their own safety.”

When asked if medical tourism is a passing fad, the senior editor said “Cosmetic Town has been observing this growing medical trend and it does not look to be slowing down anytime soon. That’s one of the reasons our news team devoted a week to stories exploring the reasons why patients are responding so positively to medical tourism. A well-informed patient is a patient that is prepared and knowledgeable about having their procedure of choice. Medical tourism is fine as long as the doctor in question is board-certified and experienced in providing natural and long-lasting results.”

About Cosmetic Town

Cosmetic Town is an online cosmetic medicine publication whose mission is to share knowledge, inspire people and improve lives though cosmetic medicine. The website features doctors who were endorsed and highly recommended by their peers. Its reliable and streamlined database allows users to easily access the cosmetic surgery information they need with just a click of a button.
