Drs. Elizabeth Felts Randall and Charles Felts Attend the 105th Annual AAP Meeting

Periodontists Drs. Felts and Randall believe in continuous training and education so they can stay current in the industry and better serve their patients.

Chattanooga, TN based periodontists, Drs. Charles Felts and Elizabeth Felts Randall, along with their entire staff, recently attended the 105th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) in Chicago, IL. The AAP Annual Meetings are designed for attendees to learn, share experiences, and network with fellow periodontists, staff, and dental professionals. The team at Chattanooga Periodontics and Dental Implants brought back what they learned at this event to better serve their patients.

This year’s AAP Annual Meeting featured over 50 courses and 100 speakers for attendees to learn from. One keynote speaker, Dr. Jack Cochran, spoke on the challenges facing all healthcare providers and how periodontics can adapt to the shifting health policy landscape. The meeting took place over four days and offered attendees more than 25 hours of continuing education credits.

Chattanooga Periodontics and Dental Implants offers leading periodontal and dental implant care. Periodontists Drs. Felts and Randall believe in continuous training and education so they can stay current in the industry and better serve their patients. The practice offers cutting-edge treatments, including:

  • LANAP® laser gum disease treatment
  • Gum recession treatment
  • Dental implants
  • Oral plastic surgery
  • IV sedation

As experienced periodontists, Drs. Felts and Randall offer modern dental implant solutions, including TeethXpress® full mouth dental implants. Considered the gold standard solution to replace missing teeth, dental implants mimic the function and appearance of natural teeth after they have been lost or extracted. TeethXpress is a revolutionary approach to tooth replacement for patients who have lost all or most of their teeth. By securing a bridge of lifelike new teeth to dental implants, Drs. Felts and Randall can restore virtually full function and appearance to a patient’s smile.

To make the dental implant surgery easier for patients, this team of periodontists offers IV sedation, which both Drs. Felts and Randall are certified to administer. With IV sedation, the TeethXpress full mouth dental implant process becomes easier as patients can experience reduced dental fear and anxiety, and typically have no memory of the procedure.

2019 Mary Pazdur Award Presentation

Dr. Pelusi is a caregiver who has exerted a dynamic influence on advancing the quality of care for patients with cancer.

At the 7th annual JADPRO Live conference, representatives from the Advanced Practitioner Society for Hematology and Oncology (APSHO) presented the second annual Mary Pazdur Award for Excellence in Advanced Practice in Oncology to Jody Pelusi, PhD, FNP, AOCNP®, of HonorHealth Research Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Dr. Pelusi, a nurse practitioner, educator, and clinical trial sub-investigator with more than 40 years of experience caring for patients with cancer, accepted the award from John A. Gentile, Jr., Chairman of Harborside, and Tina Harris, MS, NP-C, AOCNP®, chair of the APSHO Awards and Recognition Committee, on stage at JADPRO Live. The early afternoon award presentation ceremony included a video highlighting Dr. Pelusi’s work that had been filmed on location in Arizona.

First and foremost a champion for her patients and their families, Dr. Pelusi has been a pioneer in countless “firsts” in Arizona throughout her career. Among other achievements, she co-founded the state’s first oncology chemotherapy course for nurses, developed the first family caregivers training program, developed the first and longest running cancer support group, coordinated the establishment of the oncology services department within Indian Health Services at the Phoenix Indian Hospital, and developed the first mobile program for cancer screening and early detection to individuals in extremely remote rural areas of Arizona.

According to Dr. Pelusi’s nominator for the award, colleague Gayle Jameson, RN, MSN, ACNP-BC, AOCN®, “She literally changed the landscape of access to oncology care in Arizona.”

In her nomination essay, Ms. Jameson, who has been Dr. Pelusi’s colleague for several decades, described her as a caregiver who has “exerted a dynamic influence on advancing the quality of care for patients with cancer and enhancing safe practice, but also has never lost her passion to educate nurses, health care providers, and the community on the unique needs of our dear oncology patients and their families.”

Another of Dr. Pelusi’s colleagues said, “Dr. Pelusi is an excellent mentor, and I have always looked to her for guidance in my own oncology career. I admire her versatility, resourcefulness, and creativity. She has been and continues to be an inspiration for all who have had the pleasure of knowing her and working with her.”

APSHO will begin accepting nominations in December for the third annual Mary Pazdur Award for Excellence in Advanced Practice, which will be presented at the 2020 JADPRO Live conference, October 14-17, in Minneapolis. The winner will receive an honorarium and an all-expenses-paid trip to the 2020 conference, as well as recognition at the meeting and in the Journal of the Advanced Practitioner in Oncology (JADPRO).

About the Mary Pazdur Award for Excellence in Advanced Practice

The annual award, created in honor of Mary Pazdur, RN, MSN, is given to an APSHO member who consistently demonstrates exemplary leadership and outstanding contributions to clinical practice, research, or education in the hematology/oncology field. GoMarketing’s CEO Richard Uzelac, Announces New Americans with Disabilities Act Website Compliance Services

Americans with Disabilities Act screen grab from GoMarketing.com

ADA Website Compliance Services by Richard Uzelac’s GoMarketing

Compliance to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) is not an option, it is the Law. – Richard Uzelac

“ADA Website Compliance is not an Option; it is the Law.”

“We have been following the drama around the Americans With Disabilities Act Website Compliance Law for over two years. After the Domino’s Pizza case went to the Supreme Court, and Domino’s lost the suit, things got serious, ADA Compliance was real, and it was here to stay,” said Richard Uzelac, CEO of GoMarketing. “Before that case’s outcome finalized, we had continued to work as we had, with high quality Search Engine Optimization (SEO) for our Clients. Good SEO almost equated to ADA Compliance. In fact, in many ways ADA is simply better SEO Optimization, “ Richard Uzelac added.

The team at GoMarketing decided to offer specific ADA Website Compliance Services to their Clients, and any business that wanted to become compliant. Compliance is basically adjusting the site to be usable for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind, and Partially Blind.

“In early 2019 we were approached by quite a few Companies that wanted bids and pricing for website Americans with Disabilities Act compliance. In some cases, the companies gave us the fees others were charging for compliance and we were astounded at the astronomical prices,” said Richard Uzelac. “Companies with thirty-page websites were getting quotes of $20,000 or more to get their sites ADA Compliant. We saw quite a bit of price gouging going on because business owners simply did not know what was involved and what it took to become compliant. Many owners were terrified to become the next sued company in their space,” added Uzelac.

GoMarketing offers several programs designed to meet the needs of any company and their websites. The process to compliance is usually straight forward and it is clearly explained with no mystery to our Clients.

Analysis: Analyzing the current website and identify all issue the site has that is keeping the site from becoming compliant.

Development: Developing the backend and frontend code and content of the website to meet ADA Compliance, this includes providing changes to the site for the Deaf, Hard of Hearing, Blind, Partially Blind.

User Adjustable Interface: GoMarketing uses a proprietary software that enables all users to modify their experience of being on the site to meet their own individual needs.

Here are examples of just some of the items addressed during ADA Compliance Optimization by GoMarketing:

  • Logical overall layout of the site and navigation
  • Forms are logical and follow a pattern throughout the website.
  • No auto-submissions of forms, all must have an action performed to be submitted.
  • Images: Adding Titles, Captions and/or Alt-Text to each picture that explains what is on the picture to someone with sight impairment.

Videos: Adding closed captions to all videos for the hearing disabled to understand what is being communicated in the video. Also, ability for all users to pause, stop or replay a video.

  • Audio Transcriptions: For recorded sound media, adding the transcription text from the media to the page or quickly reachable by a link for the hearing impaired.
  • Keyboard Accessibility: The website must be navigable by just a keyboard, without the use of a mouse or similar.
  • Easy to read Text, Contrast, and Sizing.

These are just a sample of the requirements for ADA Website Compliance.

In addition to the actions taken above to become compliant, GoMarketing offers a new proprietary website program that allows all impaired users to alter their individual interface with the Clients website.

This new ADA User Interface Controller, ADA UIC, allows the blind/partially blind or deaf/partially deaf to adjust the following:

User Accessibility Interface (Foreground App.) allows users to change:

  • Fonts and Font Sizes
  • Site Colors and Contrasts
  • Use a Virtual Keyboard
  • Control Cursor type and size
  • Engage an Online Glossary
  • Stop/Pause Animations/Videos

Artificial Machine Learning (Background App.) supports users with:

  • WAI-Aria 1.1 Compliant
  • Adds Alt tags to Images to Describe them to the blind, auto updated daily.
  • Menus-Made compatible for accessibility software
  • Dropdowns- Made compatible for accessibility software
  • Popups- Made compatible for accessibility software
  • Forms- Made compatible for accessibility software
  • Widgets- Made compatible for accessibility software
  • Icons- Made compatible for accessibility software
  • Buttons- Made compatible for accessibility software

Should you become compliant? Yes, it is now the law to be compliant.

The industries that have been hit the most with ADA Lawsuits so far are:

  • Travel/Hospitality
  • Restaurants/Food Service:
  • Medical/Health
  • E-Commerce
  • Universities/Educational
  • Beauty/Fitness/Wellness
  • Entertainment/Leisure:
  • Insurance
  • Retail Stores
  • Home Services
  • Banking/Financial
  • Real Estate
  • Automotive
  • Government

But when a company from a different field is sued successfully, there seems to be a lot more lawsuits for that industry or field being filed.

“Every week a new industry or field is highlighted in a lawsuit and other companies are soon hit over ADA non-compliance very quickly. The list of industry grows so fast that it can be said ALL industries and fields are now in jeopardy of being sued for ADA violations. Key new industries are Home Services and Professional Services,” offers Richard Uzelac.

Vicksburg, MS Dentists, Drs. Kenneth and Jonathan Nash, Complete Extensive Dental Implant Continuum

Drs. Kenneth and Jonathan Nash, Dentists in Vicksburg, MS

Dentists, Drs. Kenneth and Jonathan Nash, Complete the Implant Dentistry Continuum™

What dental implants do is allow you to maintain the space without losing any more teeth.

Respected dentists in Vicksburg, MS, Drs. Kenneth and Jonathan Nash, complete the fourth and final session of the Implant Dentistry Continuum™. This comprehensive continuing education course provides in-depth lectures and hands-on courses for attendees covering all aspects of dental implants. The dentists at Nash Family Dentistry offer full-service dental implant treatment, both placing and restoring implants for patients who have missing teeth.

The Implant Dentistry Continuum is a four-session course held in multiple cities across the United States. The final course was taken by Dr. Kenneth Nash in Atlanta, GA and by Dr. Jonathan Nash in Nashville, TN. This fourth session focused on patient acceptance and acquisition, who to treat and why, as well as implant complications. Both doctors will participate in a two-day, live patient, hands-on experience follow-up to the continuum. This follow-up course will be held on January 16-18, 2020 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. By attending this continuum, both dentists are able to provide better dental implant care for patients in their Vicksburg, MS office.

“Implants help to maintain the bone in the area where the tooth is missing. What dental implants do is allow you to maintain the space without losing any more teeth,” says Dr. Jonathan Nash. “An implant is just a titanium screw that fits into the space of a missing tooth. After the bone has healed, we restore the implant by placing an abutment and crown over top.”

A dental implant is an effective solution for tooth replacement. Composed of a titanium post inserted into the jaw and a lifelike crown restoration, dental implants restore both function and appearance to the smile. As a surgical procedure, dentists must perform the treatment with precision and care. Once placed and restored, patients can eat, chew, smile and speak with confidence. With proper care, dental implants can last a patient the rest of their life.

Nash Family Dentistry offers patients comprehensive dental care, including advanced dental implant placement and restoration. The practice also offers bone grafting and tooth extraction to help a patient qualify for dental implants. The dentists believe in staying up to date with advanced technology to offer patients the best possible care. Cold Chain Validation Best Practices Including CAR T-cell and ADC Immunotherapies

Cold Chain Validation Webinar

Due to the high volume of interest in the cold chain validation best practices topic, Modality Solutions is providing free on-demand replays of the informative 45-minute webinar.

With more than 35 international cold chain regulatory compliance guidance documents, global standards are becoming more comprehensive and increasingly complex,” said President, Gary Hutchinson. “Our webinar is positioned to help companies build their reputation of reliability with regulators.”

Modality Solutions, biopharmaceutical cold chain engineering firm, hosted a live webinar covering a step-by-step cold chain validation guide to meet and exceed increasingly stringent regulatory expectations including monoclonal antibodies, antibody-drug conjugates, and cell therapies. Targeting complex cold chain biopharmaceutical industry leaders, the September 19, 2019 webinar was well received and attended. Due to the high volume of interest in the topic, Modality Solutions is providing free on-demand replays of the 45-minute presentation. Click here to access the cold chain validation webinar.

Modality Solutions’ principals Gary M. Hutchinson and Daniel J. Littlefield presented the webinar entitled “Cold Chain Validation Best Practices Including Immunotherapy” in conjunction with Pharmaceutical Technology and Business Review Webinars.

Modality Solutions has access to the latest regulatory agency requirements for emerging therapeutics. Personalized therapies employing ADC (Antibody Drug Conjugates) and CAR T-cell (Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-cell), have complex cold chains. This difficulty presents challenges in the transportation, chain of custody, traceability, and storage of the cells, which creates a significant risk in the treatment process. New validation approaches based on regulatory responses to previously submitted immunotherapy cold chains are shared in the webinar.

Four of the valuable webinar learning objectives include:

  • How to integrate stability data and testing for environmental hazards during transport of a drug product into a validation master plan for cold chain distribution.
  • How to qualify your transport lanes with an operational and performance qualification approach.
  • Why ASTM D4169 is no longer enough – with examples of drug product testing for distribution vs. packaging qualification testing.
  • How to put all of the above together for filing and inspection.

“With more than 35 international cold chain regulatory compliance guidance documents, global standards are becoming more comprehensive and increasingly complex,” said Modality Solutions President, Gary Hutchinson. “New therapies, accelerating costs, sustainable technologies, and emerging markets demand validated cold chain networks that consistently produce low-cost and high-quality outcomes for patients–with a minimal variation, delivering value to a company’s supply chain. Our webinar is positioned to help companies build their reputation of reliability with regulators.”

Business Review Webinars (BRW) is a thought leadership portal for business professionals in the pharmaceutical, healthcare, food & beverage, energy, packaging, supply chain, and technology industries. Its goal is to create a high-level discussion between industry thought leaders and business professionals who are actively facing the day-to-day challenges of their respective industries. Topics are based around an editorial plan established by leading editors and analysts.

Bipartisan Legislation Increasing Research Funding to Improve Diagnosis Introduced in U.S. House Following SIDM Research Release

“This legislation moves the research community toward identifying solutions to equip clinicians, patients and their families with the tools needed to arrive at the right diagnosis,” said Paul L. Epner, chief executive officer and co-founder of SIDM.

Congress took steps this month to increase the federal government’s investment in research designed to improve the quality and safety of medical diagnoses. Bipartisan legislation, Improving Diagnosis in Medicine Act of 2019, was introduced by U.S. House Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján (D-NM) and Rep. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) on November 13.

The legislation comes four months after the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM) released new research on Capitol Hill showing that inaccurate and delayed diagnoses are the most common, catastrophic, and costly of all medical errors in the U.S. healthcare system.

According to the bill’s authors, the legislation aims to increase researchers’ capacity to develop and test solutions to improve diagnostic quality and safety. It also establishes an HHS Interagency Council to identify and coordinate healthcare research related to reducing diagnostic errors. Finally, it adds diagnosis as new category to the federal database that formally tracks health research funding.

Last week hundreds of researchers, patients, and clinicians focused on improving diagnosis came together to discuss specific strategies to improve diagnosis in practice and showcase areas in need of increased research at the SIDM Diagnostic Error in Medicine 12th Annual International Conference. Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) announced at the conference his intention to introduce a companion bill in the Senate.

“Diagnostic error is the most common, most costly, and most catastrophic of serious medical errors. Relative to its public health footprint, diagnostic error is the most under-recognized, under-studied, and under-remediated threat to patient safety in our health care system,” said Paul L. Epner, chief executive officer and co-founder of the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine. “Much of the limited research into diagnostic error has focused on defining the magnitude of the problem. This legislation moves the research community toward identifying solutions to equip clinicians, patients and their families with the tools needed to arrive at the right diagnosis. “It is heartening to see Representatives Luján and Bilirakis work together to improve healthcare safety. We look forward to the bill being passed by the House and Senate and signed into law.”

The bill also calls on the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) to establish Research Centers of Diagnostic Excellence and support grants to increase research focused on diagnosis. The Interagency Council established by the legislation would be chaired by AHRQ, with senior-level representation from the National Institutes of Health, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs, the U.S. Department of Defense, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The Council would be charged with developing a federal strategic plan to strengthen diagnostic quality and safety research and report to Congress bi-annually on progress against that plan.

Full text of the legislation can be found here.

About the Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine (SIDM)

The Society to Improve Diagnosis in Medicine catalyzes and leads change to improve diagnosis and eliminate harm from diagnostic error. We work in partnership with patients, their families, the healthcare community and every interested stakeholder. SIDM is the only organization focused solely on the problem of diagnostic error and improving the accuracy and timeliness of diagnosis. In 2015, SIDM established the Coalition to Improve Diagnosis to increase awareness and actions that improve diagnosis. Members of the Coalition represent hundreds of thousands of healthcare providers and patients—and the leading health organizations and government agencies involved in patient care. Together, we work to find solutions that enhance diagnostic safety and quality, reduce harm, and ultimately, ensure better health outcomes for patients. InCore Lapidus System Single-Use Sterile Kit

These single-use kits are a significant advancement for the InCore Lapidus System that will grow in appreciation by health systems that are looking to improve operational efficiencies.

Nextremity Solutions, Inc., a strategic commercialization organization with a focus on the musculoskeletal space, located in “The Orthopedic Capital of the World,” Warsaw, Ind., recently completed the first several cases using its single-use sterile version of the already successful InCore Lapidus System.

The InCore Lapidus System is a three-part construct intended for internal fixation for First Metatarsocuneiform Arthrodesis (also known as Lapidus or First Tarsometatarsal Fusion). The system allows for tri-planar correction through the use of a Targeting Guide that is intended to aid and stabilize angular/rotational correction in all three planes (transverse, sagittal and frontal plane).

Michael S. Lee, DPM of Clive, Iowa stated, “The single-use kit ensures the instruments are always clean and ready for my cases and every drill bit is new and sharp. These single-use kits are a significant advancement for the InCore Lapidus System that will grow in appreciation by health systems that are looking to improve operational efficiencies. I look forward to having these in the OR every week.”

A single-use sterile version of the reusable system was developed as a disposable option for health systems that desire to eliminate the need to sterilize a reusable set and have the ability to use brand new instrumentation with every procedure.

“The single-use kit is a very efficient system for the ASC where I practice and certainly saves our staff time by not having to prepare and then clean typical reusable instruments,” commented John G. Anderson, MD of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Nicholas Dodson, DPM of Valdosta, Georgia said, “The new InCore single-use instrument kit and targeting guide performed exactly like the reusable instruments that I have been using. The transition to the single-use kit was seamless and the quality of the instruments and targeting guide was indistinguishable from the reusable set.”

The single-use sterile version of the InCore Lapidus System is currently in a limited commercial launch.
