Benchmark Wellness Management President and COO Co-Chairs FriendshipWorks 35th Anniversary Gala Celebration

Not enough can be said about the positive effect of human connection – the invaluable gift that FriendshipWorks has provided for 35 years to Boston-area seniors -Denise McQuaide, president and COO, Benchmark Wellness Management

Benchmark Senior Living, a human connection company and leading provider of senior living services in the Northeast, today announced that Benchmark Wellness Management President and COO Denise McQuaide, serving as co-chair for the FriendshipWorks My Friend, My World anniversary gala celebration and fundraiser on Nov. 21, 2019, helped raise nearly $375,000 for the organization. McQuaide served as co-chair with Andrea Cohen, co-founder and CEO of HouseWorks.

FriendshipWorks is a Boston-based, non-profit human connection organization. For the past 35 years, the company has addressed one of the key issues affecting older adults, social isolation, by offering a variety of volunteer-driven programs, including Friendly Visiting and Friendly Helping, Medical Escorts, PetPals, Relaxing Through the Arts and MusicWorks, La Cadena de Amistad and the Elder Low-Vision Initiative to seniors in the Boston area. These programs make it possible for seniors of all income levels to attend their medical appointments, get their medications, receive help with small tasks, partake in art or music therapy or simply enjoy a visit from volunteers at no cost to them.

Benchmark is partnering with FriendshipWorks for its Newton area communities as an extension of its own mission to elevate human connection and provide purposeful programming. For example, Chestnut Park at Cleveland Circle, a Benchmark assisted living and memory care community in Brighton, Mass., has been a longtime participant of the FriendshipWorks PetPals program through which residents enjoy weekly visits from a canine. Each week a group of residents participates in exercises with the dog and its owner, increasing their activity and engagement.

In 2018, Benchmark, along with the MIT AgeLab and GE Healthcare, co-sponsored the global In Good Company Optimal Aging Challenge and funded a $5,000 grant awarded to FriendshipWorks for its role in addressing social isolation and loneliness among those over 50.

“Research overwhelmingly shows us that organizations like FriendshipWorks can help overcome social determinants of health – such as lack of social supports, poor nutrition and inadequate transportation – that contribute to preventable ER visits and hospital re-admissions,” says McQuaide. “Something as simple as someone to say hello to regularly or knowing a visitor will stop by can help break a debilitating sense of isolation and loneliness. Not enough can be said about the positive effect of human connection – the invaluable gift that FriendshipWorks has provided for 35 years to Boston-area seniors.”

McQuaide has over 30 years of executive health care experience, having previously served as vice president of post-acute care for Mount Auburn Hospital. Prior to that, she served as president of Brickstone Senior Living and COO of Hebrew Senior Life. She also served as senior vice president of operations for New England for Genesis HealthCare, overseeing 60 hospital-based and community skilled nursing facilities and five assisted living communities.

About Benchmark Senior Living

Benchmark is a leading provider of senior living communities in the Northeast with nearly 6,500 associates and 61 communities. Founded in 1997 by Tom Grape, Benchmark offers independent living, assisted living, memory care and continuing care retirement communities in eight states. The company was named to FORTUNE magazine’s Best Workplaces for Aging Services list in both the first year it was published, 2018, and in 2019, ranking number five among senior living companies with 50 or more communities. The company has been named to The Boston Globe’s Top Places to Work list every year of the 12 years it has been published. It also has been consistently recognized as a top workplace by Boston Business Journal, Hartford Courant and Hartford Business Journal and as one of the healthiest employers by the Boston Business Journal, Providence Business News and Hartford Business Journal. The Disease That Can Change Your Life & Take Your Vision

West Boca Eye Center Brent Bellotte MD

West Boca Eye Center Brent Bellotte MD

For the ultimate diabetic eye-health treatment and preventative management, the advice of leading ophthalmologist Brent Bellotte MD is second to none.

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), 21.3 million US citizens have been diagnosed with diabetes. Estimates from the CDC state that another 7.2 million are undiagnosed, and an incredible 84.1 million have prediabetes— a pre-cursor to the disease where blood glucose is elevated but not to levels where the condition is diagnosed. With those figures, it’s no wonder the disease is one of the most common online searches when it comes to ill health.

While it’s positive that so many are researching their well-being, the internet minefield contains many inaccuracies. When it comes to illness and disease, such misinformation could influence or prevent people from seeking the correct advice. Leading ophthalmologist in Boca Raton, FL, Brent Bellotte MD, is committed to helping sufferers and anyone who’s affected or concerned about the condition to understand the facts and take the necessary steps to reduce the chance of diabetes causing life-changing sight problems.

Diabetes And The Eyes

Diabetes is a condition where the body can’t regulate the amount of sugar (glucose) in the blood. There are two forms of the disease: Type I and Type II. The first is where the body can’t create insulin, a hormone vital for the metabolism of sugar. Type II is when insulin isn’t produced in large enough amounts or is ineffective. Both types have an impact on the health of the eye, with a range of risks that come under the umbrella term of “diabetic eye disease”.

When blood sugar rises without being monitored there are both short and long-term effects. The increased levels of glucose can cause blurred vision in the short term—something that usually reduces when the sugars normalize. If the levels are allowed to remain high they can cause damage to the blood vessels at the back of the eye. These can leak, swell, scar, and cause high pressure within the eye itself.

Problems that can occur over time include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, glaucoma, and cataracts. When these diseases are not treated or monitored properly, they can lead to blindness.

Preventative Steps

While this might seem to be cause for alarm, those with diabetes and prediabetes can take positive steps to reduce or prevent such eye conditions from occurring. By far the most effective means to do this is to manage blood sugar levels, reduce any hypertension (a condition that often goes hand in hand with diabetes), take steps to lower high cholesterol, quit smoking, and to have a dilated eye exam on an annual basis.

The latter is a vital method by which any signs of diabetic eye disease can be determined at the earliest stages. At the beginning of a decline in eye health, there may be no symptoms, and only a professional examination of the eye can see the initial minute changes. Working with a specialist eye-health provider, such as Brent Bellotte MD at the West Boca Eye Center, allows for ongoing individual assessment as to the risk factors, current damage, and treatments that might be necessary to ensure the very best vision on an on-going basis.

Professional Assessment For Peace Of Mind

Online information about diabetes and eye health ranges from accurate to the downright dangerous. The evolution of the disease varies in each individual, making the services of a professional eye clinician essential to ensure the best eye health as the condition progresses. When it comes to eyesight, the worst-case scenario of mismanaged diabetes is a complete loss of vision. Even blurred and reduced visual fields are hugely life-changing but, thankfully, this can often be avoided with careful management.

The importance of not allowing misinformation online to cloud a decision to seek professional advice cannot be stressed enough. For the ultimate diabetic eye-health treatment and preventative management, the advice of leading ophthalmologist Brent Bellotte M.D. is second to none. Flat and Healthy Tummy in Six Weeks, Black Friday Special by Dr. Alexandra Chaux, DPT with the Hypopressive Method

Image of Dr. Alexandra Chaux, DPT, Showing Flat Tummy in a Bikini

Dr. Alexandra Chaux, DPT, Hypopressive Method

“The Hypopressive Method has been very successful with all my Clients, especially women with tummy issue after giving birth” – Dr. Alexandra Chaux

The Hypopressive Method

What is Hypopressive?

It is the modern European method of getting strong abdominals in a healthy way. It is a group of rhythmical postures and breathing exercises used to balance the strength and the muscle tone between abdominals, pelvic floor, and the breathing muscles.

The Hypopressive method reduces the pressure in the intra-abdominal cavity responsible for that unwanted belly that does not go away even after thousands of sit ups.

What is the difference between Hypopressives and traditional Abdominals (crunches and sit ups)?

Traditional abdominals make your abdominals stronger and at the same time increases the intra-abdominal pressure, pushes organs down, and weakens your pelvic floor muscles, which increases the chance of having health issues such as incontinence, hernias, sexual dysfunctions, and back pain.

Hypopressives make your abdominal muscles stronger and decrease the intra-abdominal pressure; putting organs back in place, making the pelvic floor muscles stronger, reducing waist perimeter, preventing and resolving health issues including organ prolapsed, diasti rectis, hernias, urinary incontinence, back pain, poor posture, swollen legs, and sexual dysfunctions.

Who can perform Hypopressive?

Those who want to:

  •     Recover their figure after childbirth
  •     Sculpt a smaller waist
  •     Have stronger abdominals/core
  •     Prevent or alleviate urinary incontinence, back pain, and hernias
  •     Have a better sexual life by increasing sensation and orgasms.
  •     Have more energy and endurance

When should you do Hypopressive?

You just need to do Hypopressive one to two times a week for 25-30 minutes for the first 6 weeks. This will give time to the brain to reprogram the abdominal muscles, pelvic floor muscles, and breathing muscles, to teach them to work together at the same time always even when you are relaxed sitting in a comfortable chair.

It is advised to include Hypopressive exercises in your daily routine after the 6 weeks to maximize results.

What are the benefits?

  •     Reduce Waist Perimeter
  •     Improve Sexual Function
  •     Prevent Urinary Incontinence
  •     Enhance Posture and Flexibility
  •     Prevent many types of hernias (Inguinal, abdominal, lumber, etc.)
  •     Create a Lumbo-Pelvic Protection
  •     Reduce back injuries
  •     Improve Cardiovascular Endurance
  •     Boost the Immune System

How do you perform Hypopressive?

Look for a certified Hypopressive health professional to start the healthiest abdominal workout. They are well known in Europe and South America. Learn more at Dr. Chaux’s Blog.

Who should not do Hypopressive?

  •     During pregnancy
  •     High blood pressure
  •     Hypothyroidism

How many health professionals are certified in the Hypopressive method for rehabilitation and therapy (Hypopressive abdominal gymnastics) in the USA?

(Hypopressive Abdominal gymnastics is a certification given just exclusively to doctors, and physical therapists in Spain.)

There is just one health professional in the USA: Dr. Alexandra Chaux, DPT. Dr. Chaux is a Doctor of Physical Therapy in Malibu, California. She went to Spain in January 2014 to get certified specifically to help her patients with abdominal and pelvic issues.

Press: Dr. Chaux has been featured on Romper.com and Univision Television. The results have been outstanding for her clients and students.

Sign-up for her Hypopressive Core 6-Week Video Series 1, normally just $59, now 50% off at $29.

MedCurrent Partners with openDoctor to Enable Seamless Radiology Clinical Decision Support for Ordering Providers

“We partnered with Medcurrent to provide our clients with not only a verified tool but a user friendly Clinical Decision Support Mechanism that meets the AUC mandate,” said Joe Marino, CEO of openDoctor.

MedCurrent Corporation, a global leader in radiology Clinical Decision Support (CDS) solutions, today announced a partnership with openDoctor, a leader in patient scheduling automation and referring provider engagement technology. As a result, MedCurrent’s OrderWise® CDS solution will be integrated into openDoctor’s physician engagement platform to give ordering providers a seamless way to meet the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Appropriate Use Criteria (AUC) mandate for advanced imaging set to begin in January 2020.

As a qualified Clinical Decision Support Mechanism (CDSM) by CMS, MedCurrent’s OrderWise® CDS platform guides clinicians through clinical decision pathways to help them order the right diagnostic imaging tests for their patients at the point of care. OrderWise® incorporates diagnostic imaging guidelines from Intermountain Healthcare (IH), the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) Foundation—all CMS qualified Provider-Led Entities (qPLEs).

“This partnership means that clinicians who use the openDoctor platform to place advanced imaging orders will now have access to a CMS-qualified Clinical Decision Support Mechanism directly in their radiology ordering workflow,” said John Adziovsky, CEO of MedCurrent. “We are very excited to be working with openDoctor to enable physicians to meet regulatory requirements and provide their patients with more appropriate, evidence-based care with seamless end-user experience.”

Through the integration, ordering physicians will be able to access OrderWise® directly within openDoctor’s order entry module. Once the physician identifies a patient requiring advanced imaging tests, he/she will be able to easily launch OrderWise® with a single click. OrderWise® will obtain inputs from the physician and provide evidence-based recommendations on ordering appropriateness. The openDoctor platform will subsequently send the resulting order, with evidence of AUC consultation, to any third-party system in order to complete the end-to-end workflow.

“We partnered with Medcurrent to provide our clients with not only a verified tool but a user friendly Clinical Decision Support Mechanism that meets the AUC mandate,” said Joe Marino, CEO of openDoctor. “Our partnership with Medcurrent strengthens our complete solution offering to contain all the digital tools necessary to automate and accelerate the ordering to scheduling journey for referring providers, imaging centers and patients.”
