Value-based primary care provider accelerates growth and physician recruitment

ChenMed logo

ChenMed will open 20 new medical practices in the coming year, adding Cincinnati, Cleveland, Memphis, Orlando, and St. Louis

Having sustained average annual growth exceeding 35 percent since 2010, ChenMed today announced plans to establish multiple Dedicated Senior Medical Centers in each of five new cities, and to substantively grow its current 14 markets. ChenMed will open 20 new medical practices in the coming year, adding Cincinnati, Cleveland, Memphis, Orlando, and St. Louis to transform primary care for tens of thousands of presently underserved seniors. With these openings, ChenMed will have almost 80 centers in 10 states.

“We’re enjoying a record year at ChenMed,” notes Christopher Chen, M.D., ChenMed CEO. “So, as a mission-driven company long focused on revolutionizing primary care for at-risk seniors, we’re self-funding a record number of new centers in 2020. Our proven and scalable approach to primary care is precisely what Medicare-eligible seniors in Cincinnati, Cleveland, Memphis, Orlando and St. Louis need to thrive.”

Unlike traditional fee-for-service medical practices across America, where it’s frequently hard for patients to schedule timely appointments with their primary care physicians, ChenMed primary care physicians make it easy for patients to stay connected with the doctor who knows them best. They earn trust by providing high-touch personalized primary care and give patients their personal cell phone numbers for timely replies to texts or calls. Plus, they welcome walk-in appointments whenever needed by their patients.

“Our bold 2020 expansion means we’re aggressively recruiting outstanding primary care physicians to help us serve at-risk seniors in 19 markets, with even more hires anticipated in 2021. And, as a physician-led, high-growth medical practice, we are currently offering great careers with a fast track to partnership in 10 states,” explains Gaurov Dayal, M.D., president, new markets and chief growth officer at ChenMed.

“ChenMed has been transforming care for seniors for more than 30 years,” Dayal adds. “Our primary care doctors serve an average of just 400 patients each. That’s less than one-fifth the national average of 2,300 patients per primary doctor, and it’s a real quality of care advantage for our seniors – especially for those living with multiple and major chronic health challenges.” Clinicians can learn more @ http://www.chenmed.com/careers/physicians.

Top clinical leaders at ChenMed are frequent presenters at key industry forums, given the company’s pioneering work, and quick-to-scale leadership as a 100 percent at-risk value-based care provider. Recent examples include: America’s Physician Groups 2019 Colloquium, LAN Summit 2019, NEJM Catalyst Dinner 2019, Cain Brothers’ 2019 Annual Healthcare Innovation Conference, Oliver Wyman Healthcare Summit 2019, SHSMD Connections 2019 Annual Conference, and BMA Medicare Advantage Summit 2019.

Plus, ChenMed continues to educate physicians about the tremendous promise of value- over volume-based primary care. During 2019 alone, ChenMed has hosted or presented at more than 50 invitation only events for primary care doctors interested in learning about the viable pathways to risk as encouraged by Alex Azar, United States Secretary of Health and Human Services (HSUS), and by Seema Verma, administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

More time with patients means better outcomes

The proven ChenMed approach is simple and vital to Medicare-eligible seniors, many of whom are living with major and multiple chronic health challenges. ChenMed primary care physicians average 10 times more face-to-face time with their patients than a typical physician does. Instead of the national average of just 20.3 minutes of direct time yearly with patients, ChenMed patients in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Virginia benefit from average time with their doctor exceeding 200 minutes annually.

“The more doctors see their patients, the better they know them. And the better they know them, the better chance they have of helping them stay healthy by catching small issues before they turn into big ones,” underscores Dr. Chen.

Important personalized care benefits for ChenMed patients include:

  • Door-to-doctor transportation, if necessary.
  • Having the cell phone number for his/her ChenMed primary care physician for timely and informed help whenever a health concern might arise.
  • Walk-in appointments.
  • Unlimited visits.
  • On-site cardiology, medication dispensing, imaging, labs, acupuncture, and more.
  • Healthy lifestyle classes.
  • Almost all costs of care covered by fixed Medicare and/Medicaid reimbursements that are enhanced by Medicare Advantage supplemental insurance.

About ChenMed

For seniors most in need of care, high-quality health care often is beyond reach. ChenMed brings concierge-style medicine — and better health outcomes — to the neediest populations. ChenMed is a privately owned medical, management and technology company that currently operates 59 primary care medical practices for diverse populations of seniors. A provider of choice for some 20 Medicare Advantage health insurance plans, ChenMed brands include Chen Senior Medical Center, Dedicated Senior Medical Center, and JenCare Senior Medical Center.

Results of ChenMed’s high-touch approach to primary care are impressive, as illustrated in the Modern Healthcare cover story (Oct. 20, 2018), which reports, “Indeed, ChenMed’s approach has resulted in 50 percent fewer hospital admissions compared with a standard primary-care practice, 28 percent lower per-member costs and significantly higher use of evidence-based medications.” Inspired by ChenMed Chairman and Founder James Chen, M.D., Ph.D., the company has been serving low-to-moderate-income seniors with multiple complex chronic conditions for over 30 years. The company’s passion for community service was recently underscored when ChenMed invested more than $500,000 to underwrite more than 9,000 employee hours of pre-Thanksgiving volunteer work completed for outstanding community organizations. Survey Reveals Truth Behind All-Time High Medical Sales Employee Satisfaction

News Image

This year, we found medical sales employee satisfaction is at a record-breaking high. – Karyn Mullins, president at MedReps.

A new survey by MedReps (http://www.medreps.com), a career site for medical sales representatives, revealed Syneos Health, Teleflex, and CONMED as the overall best medical sales companies to work for in 2020.

The 9th Annual Best Places to Work in Medical Sales survey polled over 1,200 professionals from the MedReps community to identify which medical sales companies are currently the most sought-after in the industry.

The survey results also identified the qualities and values most important to medical sales reps today, which led to them voting for their favorite company. In 2020, medical sales reps value work-life balance (83%), supportive and collaborative co-workers (53%), and trustworthy leaders (53%).

“This year, we found medical sales employee satisfaction is at a record-breaking high,” said Karyn Mullins, president at MedReps. “An incredible 90% of medical sales respondents say they’re satisfied with their jobs. We believe this jump is a result of employers focusing on various factors impacting employees, specifically a positive corporate culture through growth opportunities and the ability to make a difference in others’ lives.”

At Syneos Health, employees are developed with a purpose in mind. Leaders frequently show their teams the bigger picture to keep employees inspired and driving forward through challenging work.

“Syneos has a positive company culture allowing individuals to develop and thrive,” one Syneos Health employee explained. “The culture is driven and we’re consistently problem-solving to find ways to create value for our clients. To support this culture, leadership offers clear direction and maintains an honest and open relationship with employees.”

Teleflex also puts people at the center of all it does — one of the most notable commonalities between our winners.

“A key component of our culture is our core values and people are at the center of everything we do,” Mike Cummings, Vice President Human Resources, The Americas at Teleflex, shared. “This hasn’t been a one-year change; this has been a multi-year cultural transformation that people can see and feel.”

Growth opportunities are one of the top two reasons CONMED employees voted for their company. Lisa McCallister, the Talent Acquisition Manager at CONMED, says its leadership’s belief in growing both vertically up the ladder and horizontally to learn new skills impacts employees most.

“Our growth has allowed us to expand our sales force, which created new sales and sales leadership positions. We were able to promote many internal sales reps into those roles,” she explained. “We also believe in moving horizontally to learn and grow. Someone can switch from marketing to finance or HR to sales. When you perform and your strengths align, we always look to continue to grow you in many areas of the organization.”

Notable findings from the survey include:

  • 35% of respondents say the best part about their job is the ability to make a difference/impact.
  • Only 17% said positivity is an important leadership characteristic. Instead, they want them to be honest and trustworthy.
  • A mere 11% of respondents said they are in an active job search.
  • When asked, “What is the best part of your job?” 24% of respondents said “opportunity for growth.”

“Job satisfaction correlates with a low number of medical sales reps actively looking for new jobs, which is pleasantly unusual,” Mullins said. “However, to become a Best Place to Work in the eyes of your employees, it’s still critical to focus on and continually evolve the people-aspects of your organization.”

It’s No Spoiler to Say that Good Dental Habits in Youth can Lead to a Lifetime of Bright Smiles, says Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental

Dr. Payam Bostani’s Burbank office treats dental patients of all ages.

It’s not a spoiler to say that poor dental hygiene is a surefire path to very real tooth loss as children mature into adulthood and beyond.

A November 15 article on MSN reported on Frozen and The Good Place star Kristen Bell’s lighthearted threat to her children that their teeth would fall out should they reveal Frozen 2 spoilers at school before the movie’s release. The acclaimed young mother of two, noted for her wicked sense of humor, stands by the warning, claiming the children have as of yet not spoiled one of 2019’s most anticipated movies, avoiding a possible Disney lawsuit. Burbank-based dental center Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental says that, no matter what a parent might say, movie-star’s children do not actually have to worry about leaked storylines leading to missing teeth. On the other hand, it’s not a spoiler to say that poor dental hygiene is a surefire path to very real tooth loss as children mature into adulthood and beyond.

Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental says that parents would do well to teach proper dental hygiene habits to their young children as starting early helps to build lifelong habits that minimize the chances of developing adverse oral conditions such as gum disease or discolored teeth later in life. The dental center adds that parents who are unsure of what constitutes proper brushing and flossing techniques are encouraged to talk to their dentist, but the general rules include brushing teeth for approximately two minutes about 15 to 30 minutes after every meal. The center adds that flossing is also essential in cleaning out areas that are either difficult to reach or inaccessible to a toothbrush and rinsing with an alcohol-free mouthwash may also be a good idea.

The dental center notes that prevention is, of course, the goal, but even patients who diligently stick to their dental routine can still come down with various dental ailments. This is why regular dental exams and cleanings are an essential part of a good oral health regimen, says Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental. When bad things happen for any reason, however, the dental center says that Dr. Payam Bostani and his team are ready to offer the best in skilled and compassionate care at his Burbank office for patients of all ages.

The dental center explains that grown-up patients whose basic oral health may be sound but who are unhappy with the appearance of their teeth are also in luck, as advances in cosmetic dentistry and teeth whitening can transform a smile. In short, the center notes that whether patients are looking to treat an issue or avoid one, today’s dentists offer a range of options.

Diablo Magazine Announces The 2019 Threads of Hope Recipients

Diablo magazine December 2019 Threads of Hope issue

Diablo magazine December 2019 Threads of Hope issue

The mission has always been to help the sick and the poor. It’s no different today.

Diablo magazine’s December issue highlights five local heroes who are changing their communities for the better through their volunteer work. This year’s Threads of Hope honorees include a doctor who treats patients for free, a photographer who captures families’ precious moments, a nonprofit founder helping Tri-Valley teens, a proponent of foster care youth, and a woman dedicated to making seniors’ dreams come true.

Karen Henrich of Moment By Moment has spent 14 years providing photography to thousands of Bay Area families. She takes portraits of terminally ill children or those with a life-impacting condition and their families to capture the love, hope, and courage they express during the most difficult of times. The photo session can be extremely therapeutic and the photographs have incredible ongoing meaning.

Tom Wallace of Order of Malta Clinic of Northern California was a neurologist for half his life. Now, at age 89, he continues to treat thousands of patients at a clinic where he has volunteered four days a week since 2014. He states, “The mission (of the Order of Malta) has always been to help the sick and the poor. It’s no different today.”

Edie Henchey of Youth Homes Auxiliary has always loved retail and recognized the fundraising strength that thrift shop sales could afford a nonprofit helping foster children. Since 2014, the thrift store she manages has raised $100,000 each year; 100 percent of the sales directly benefit the children, making available birthday gifts and backpacks with school supplies and even some excursions.

Sharon Beswick Pappas of An Elderly Wish Foundation is a retired register nurse of 42 years having specialized in gerontology. Her sincere desire continues to be to help the elderly. Pappas has been volunteering with the organization for almost 20 years and they have granted some 200 wishes to date.

Linda Turnbull, founder of Teen Esteem in 1994, leads a team of 15 trained speakers who address issues relevant to students. The goal is to give kids confidence to make better choices for themselves.

Diablo magazine readers submitted nominations for this year’s honorees, and dozens more for other outstanding volunteers. A panel of community leaders select the Threads of Hope honorees. This year’s judges were Jeri Boomgaarden, managing director of donor services and senior development officer, East Bay Community Foundation; Mark Flower, senior vice president and regional managing director, Wells Fargo Private Bank; Gaby Ghorbani, founder and director, Pledge to Humanity; Carole Wynstra, board member, Walnut Creek Library Foundation.

THREADS OF HOPE EVENT

On December 4, all five 2019 Threads of hope honorees will be recognized and celebrated at the Threads of Hope event to be help at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek. TrialScope Launches Clinical Trials Website for EMD Serono

EMD Serono Clinical Trials website

EMD Serono Clinical Trials website

“Both EMD Serono and TrialScope share a commitment to clinical trial transparency, awareness and patient engagement.” – TrialScope CEO Jeff Kozloff

TrialScope, the global leader in clinical trial transparency and disclosure compliance solutions, has worked with EMD Serono, the North American branch of the healthcare business of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, to launch a new website, https://clinicaltrials.emdgroup.com. This site is designed to educate and inform patients, caregivers, the public, patient advocacy groups and healthcare professionals (HCPs) about the clinical trial journey, as well as provide specific information about clinical trials conducted by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, and its affiliates.

In an effort to keep clinical trial participants fully informed, the website provides an overview of the different phases of research, as well as outlines each step the patient will encounter through the clinical trial process. The site also provides access to trial results and other available post-trial information, such as plain language summaries and clinical study report synopses. This is made possible through the TrialScope Engage™ platform that automatically syncs approved clinical trial data from TrialScope Disclose™, the global disclosure system used by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. The site also provides impactful information about clinical research to healthcare professionals, which helps them raise awareness about the importance of clinical trials and discuss potential participation in clinical trials with their patients. An extensive FAQ section, with more than 30 questions and answers, provides a comprehensive overview of clinical trials.

“Both EMD Serono and TrialScope share a commitment to clinical trial transparency, awareness and patient engagement,” said TrialScope CEO Jeff Kozloff. “Together, we sought input from multiple patient stakeholders to develop an informative and well-designed site that will help accelerate patient knowledge, understanding and connections to relevant clinical trial information.”

To ensure that the website content meets the needs of patients, TrialScope and EMD Serono worked with the Center for Information and Study on Clinical Research Participation (CISCRP) to gather feedback from patients and the public. According to CISCRP, 75 percent of the general public is willing to participate in a clinical trial, yet only 30 percent have a basic understanding of what clinical research is. Insights gleaned from people who had previously searched for trials guided not only the content but the manner in which it is presented.

About TrialScope

TrialScope is the global leader in clinical trial disclosure and transparency management technology, supporting 16 of the top 20 industry clinical trial sponsors worldwide. TrialScope provides proven solutions that optimize the efficiency of disclosure activities, maximize trial data transparency, and foster more informed, engaged patients through open research sharing. Translational Study Demonstrates Value of MSOT Imaging for the Assessment of Disease Progression in Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy

In this study we were able to visualize collagen in vivo using MSOT imaging. It suggests its application as a non-invasive, age-independent biomarker for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

DMD is the most common lethal inherited muscular disease occurring in about one of 5,000 male births. While affected boys can develop normally, at the age of 4 to 5 years a loss of muscle mass becomes apparent. By the age of 10, characteristic muscle weakness results in the loss of walking ability and finally in respiratory and cardiac failure. Until now, the assessment of disease progression is based on muscle examinations as well as functional testing. However, physical examinations rely on active cooperation and the individual performance on the day and require a minimum age, which limits their clinical utility.

Imaging approaches such as ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have been investigated as non-invasive and objective disease assessment methods. However, complex scanning protocols limit their application and the need for sedation of very young patients still raises the need for independent easy-to-apply prognostic biomarkers in DMD.

The studies conducted at the University Hospital Erlangen (UHE) included tissues, experimental models, as well as 10 boys and 10 healty volunteers, aged 3 to 10 years. Results demonstrate that MSOT can visualize and quantify the distribution and concentration of collagen as a measure for degenerated muscular tissue, demonstrating a biomarker for DMD disease progression. ‘In this study we were able to visualize collagen in vivo using MSOT imaging’, says Dr. Adrian Regensburger, MD at UHE. ‘It suggests its application as a non-invasive, age-independent biomarker for DMD, thereby potentially filling the urgent clinical need for an easy and objective assessment of DMD disease progression and treatment monitoring’.

Christian Wiest, CEO at iThera Medical comments: ‘We are excited to see that MSOT can potentially aid DMD patients suffering from this severe disease. We will therefore continue to drive research for the use of our imaging technology in DMD and to expand its use into related fields.’

Public Health Accreditation Board Awards Five-Year Accreditation Status to Nine Health Departments; Four Health Departments Achieve Reaccreditation

News Image

“Accreditation for local health departments is essential. It is the public’s assurance that their health department is meeting national standards.” — Colleen M. Bridger, Assistant City Manager for the City of San Antonio, Texas

Strong public health departments engaged in effective community partnerships make all communities healthier places to live, work, learn, and play. Striving to fulfill their crucial mission, more and more health departments are placing their work for review against the rigorous national standards set by the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). Today, PHAB announced it has awarded initial five-year accreditation status to nine local health departments and national reaccreditation status to four local health departments. With these decisions, the benefits of being served by a PHAB-accredited health department now reach 81 percent of the U.S. population.

PHAB, the nonprofit, nongovernmental organization that administers the national public health accreditation program, aims to improve and protect the health of the public by advancing and transforming the quality and performance of governmental public health agencies in the U.S. and abroad. To receive national accreditation through PHAB, a health department must undergo a rigorous, multi-faceted, peer-reviewed assessment process to ensure it meets a set of public health quality standards and measures.

“The nine health departments that achieved initial accreditation this week have successfully demonstrated a consistent and continued commitment to improving public health in their communities,” said PHAB President and CEO Kaye Bender, PhD, RN, FAAN. “We celebrate that achievement with them, and we also celebrate with the four health departments that were awarded reaccreditation this week. In achieving reaccreditation, these four health departments are ensuring their communities that they will continue to evolve, improve, advance and become increasingly effective at improving the health of the populations they serve.”

PHAB’s national accreditation program provides standards for state, Tribal, local, and territorial health departments, as well as Army installation departments of public health. Nearly every state in the nation has at least one PHAB-accredited health department within its borders.

“Accreditation for local health departments is essential,” said Colleen M. Bridger, MPH, PhD, assistant city manager for the City of San Antonio, Texas, and former director of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District, which this week achieved national initial accreditation through PHAB. “It is the public’s assurance that their health department is meeting national standards. I’m proud of the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District’s staff and leadership for the way they rolled up their sleeves and jumped into this work. I’ve known for years that San Antonio’s health department is stellar, and this is one more validation of the first-in-class team working every day to protect the public’s health.”

The benefits of being served by a nationally accredited health department also moved northward into Michigan this week, where the residents of Lansing celebrated the accreditation of Ingham County Health Department. Michigan is now home to eight PHAB-accredited local health departments.

“PHAB accreditation is a reflection of a community-wide commitment to 21st century public health,” said Ingham County Health Department Deputy Health Officer Joel D. Murr, MPA. “It’s an achievement and advantage for all of Ingham County. The high standards will drive continuous progress, advancing health and well-being across all segments of our population. The Ingham County Health Department is proud to be a nationally accredited local health department.”

PHAB’s national accreditation program, which launched in 2011 with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has become the national standard for public health in the United States. The credential has now been achieved by 36 state health departments, 243 local health departments, three Tribal health departments, one statewide integrated local public health department system, and one Army Installation of Public Health. Among the local health departments to achieve national reaccreditation this week is Columbus Public Health in Columbus, Ohio.

“Columbus Public Health is proud to be nationally recognized by the Public Health Accreditation Board,” said Health Commissioner Mysheika W. Roberts, MD, MPH. “Reaccreditation recognizes the hard work we do every day in our community to protect the health and improve the lives of residents. We are honored to join other nationally accredited health departments to advance and transform the quality and performance of public health here and across the country.”
