Interventional Pain Management Specialist Dr. Kaliq Chang with Atlantic Spine Center offers tips on symptoms, causes and prevention of common back pain trigger

Dr. Kaliq Chang

Various risk factors for degenerative disc disease can’t be changed, including getting older and having a family history of the condition. But other risk factors are modifiable, such as obesity; heavy lifting or physical work; smoking; back injury; and sports participation.

It would be logical to assume that degenerative disc disease – one of the most common spine problems in older adults – is actually a disease. However, this progression of changes in spinal discs due to injury, wear and tear, and aging isn’t a disease at all, but a sometimes-preventable condition that can lead to chronic pain, according to Kaliq Chang, MD, of Atlantic Spine Center.

“To understand degenerative disc disease, it’s helpful to understand the spine’s anatomy,” Dr. Chang says. Spinal discs sit between bony vertebrae, enabling us to bend and flex as well as cushioning much of the stress of day-to-day movement on our spines. Gradual changes in any area of the back or neck from degenerative disc disease – often dubbed the “degenerative cascade” – can lead to lost fluid in the discs, torn outer layers, or the growth of nerve fibers.

“All of these changes can result in chronic pain,” explains Dr. Chang, an interventional pain management specialist. “Additionally, other spine problems can occur as disc deterioration continues, including bone spurs, herniated discs and spinal stenosis. When this deterioration is severe, your range of motion can become limited. Knowing symptoms and getting an accurate diagnosis is important to help slow or stop the damage.”

Causes of degenerative disc disease

Various risk factors for degenerative disc disease can’t be changed, including getting older and having a family history of the condition, Dr. Chang notes. But other risk factors are modifiable, such as obesity; heavy lifting or physical work; smoking; back injury; and sports participation.

Quickly identifying the condition can rely on knowing its symptoms, which include pain in the low back, buttocks, thighs or neck; pain that worsens when sitting, bending, lifting or twisting; pain that feels better when walking, changing positions or lying down; periods of severe pain that improves after days or even months; and numbness, weakness or tingling in the legs.

“The chance of developing degenerative disc disease – or a severe case of it – is certainly heightened in those who don’t practice healthy lifestyle measures, such as smoking or gaining excessive weight,” Dr. Chang explains. “Clearly, we can’t eliminate all our risk factors for the condition, but proactively protecting our spine is possible by controlling the risk factors we can.”

Preventing degenerative disc disease

What can you do to help prevent degenerative disc disease? Dr. Chang says these measures include:

  • Drinking water: Consuming plenty of water can help keep discs strong and pliable, also helping you avoid weight gain that could tax your spine.
  • Eating right: Healthy foods such as leafy green veggies, whole grain pastas and breads, fish, nuts and dairy products all help nourish the bones, including spinal vertebrae supporting discs.
  • Scheduling physical activity: Regular exercise contributes to blood and nutrient flow to back muscles, which support the spine and discs. As a bonus, exercise triggers the release of pain-soothing chemicals known as endorphins.

“Treatment options for degenerative disc disease are typically conservative, combining tactics such as physical therapy or steroid injections,” Dr. Chang says. “If these techniques don’t work and pain remains severe, or bowel or bladder function is affected, then surgery may be required for some patients. Talk to your doctor to come up with a plan that best suits your needs.”

Customers should know that all the frames are carefully checked when they arrive at the laboratory and they are checked again before being delivered. The lenses are fitted by trained optical technicians who carefully perform numerous lens accuracy checks during the assembly process. Before being shipped to the customers, all the products must pass six steps of quality inspection. Ito Hospital and Incubit Initiate Co-Development of Thyroid Nodule Detection System

Ito hospital, a specialized hospital for thyroid disorders treating over 370,000 patients yearly, and Incubit Inc., which undertakes practical implementation of image recognition utilizing deep learning technology, have commenced development of a thyroid nodule detection system that recognizes the size and location of nodules and will automatically generate an ultrasound scan report which will support doctors with diagnosis.

This system is a promotion of medical implementation of AI technology, focusing on reducing the time it takes for laboratory technicians to write up reports after the ultrasound examination. This will reduce the time that each patient has to spend in the hospital, thus enhancing patient satisfaction while maintaining the accuracy of the report. We hope that continuing this research will ultimately result in more people receiving earlier treatment.

In recent years, the number of patients receiving ultrasound scan examination has been increasing globally, however it is still a comparatively costly procedure making it hard to collect a large sum of data. On the other hand, Japan has an outstanding number of case data as the price of an ultrasound scan examination is much more affordable due to it being covered by the national health care system. Expectations are high not just in practical use but from an academic standpoint as this research will utilize this rich set of data.

Patients who come to Ito hospital will undergo the ultrasound scan examination after the doctor’s preliminary diagnosis. Expert laboratory technicians, will scan the thyroid gland using ultrasound, capture the images and make a report. Based on the type and size of the nodules found, the lab technicians will attach the captured images to the report, which includes the location of the nodule in accordance with the thyroid. This report is used by the doctors to diagnose the thyroid disorder. As the report is currently all made manually, it takes up a large portion of the entire examination process, which is what inspired this cooperation between Ito Hospital and Incubit Inc (hereafter Incubit).

In order to create this system, a large sum of ultrasound scan images will be anonymized, and the location of nodules will be annotated under Ito hospital’s supervision. Incubit will take the annotated images and develop a deep learning AI model that can detect the nodules and measure the sizes from the ultrasound scan images. By combining the model’s result and the locational information in the image, the position of the nodules within the thyroid will be pinpointed and also stated in the report. We plan to complete development of the automatic ultrasound scan result reporting system by 2021 to be used in Ito hospital.

About Ito Hospital

Ito hospital has been specializing in thyroid disorders since 1937 under its core principal, “To Help and Accompany People Suffering from Thyroid Disorders”. As an institution with years of experience, we are actively involved in academic research, studying long-term treatment progress and rare cases, the findings of which are published globally, as well as applied to our day to day work.

We have been and will always continue to devote ourselves to treating thyroid disorders.

About Incubit

Incubit undertakes the challenge of solving industry specific problems alongside the leading companies of Japan adopting the latest technology. We’ve worked in the fields of medicine, bio tech, space, geology and manufacturing with notable achievements, by virtue of our earnest approach towards solution deployment.

Our current focus and strength is image recognition using deep learning technology, nevertheless, our enthusiasm always lies in finding the best possible solution providable.

nView Expands its Leadership Team

The assessment solutions being used professionally today are simply not working, so we embrace the opportunity to bring better, evidence-based solutions to the market.”

nView, a leading behavioral health solutions company, is pleased to announce the appointment of Maurice Rosenbaum to the role of Chief Product Officer. As the company expands its portfolio of software solutions, Rosenbaum will be responsible for incorporating the rapidly changing dynamics of the behavioral health market into nView’s product and company growth strategy. Rosenbaum will report directly to nView CEO Jim Szyperski.

“As we add depth and breadth to our portfolio of behavioral health solutions, Maurice’s deep healthcare expertise and proven record of building and deploying software solutions accelerates our mission to improve the accuracy and speed by which healthcare professionals, educators and research organizations identify and diagnose behavioral health conditions,” said Jim Szyperski, CEO of nView. “Maurice has built and run several businesses, so we are fortunate to have him as a real partner on our senior team. I am delighted to be working with him as we collectively grow our leadership team at nView and make our behavioral health solutions more accessible to professionals and individuals who need assistance. The assessment solutions being used professionally today are simply not working, by virtually any statistical measurement, so we embrace the opportunity to bring better, evidence-based solutions to the market.”

Prior to nView, Rosenbaum founded and ran HealthSystems, a value-added reseller for GE Centricity Practice Solutions, which in 2017 he sold to a company backed by private equity. Under Rosenbaum’s leadership, HealthSystems became recognized for outstanding quality, service, training and support. Before founding HealthSystems, Rosenbaum was Vice President of Marketing, Sales and Support for Sentinel Digital Technologies, a $3.4M consulting organization for physician practices. “I’m pleased to join the nView leadership team at a time when the behavioral health market is experiencing explosive growth,” said Maurice Rosenbaum, Chief Product Officer at nView. “Particularly under value-based care payment programs, the patient’s mental health is deemed equally as important as their medical health, which is putting extreme pressure on behavioral health provider community. At nView, we are able to help physicians more accurately and efficiently identify and diagnose individuals who need assistance, thus helping more people get the care they need faster, which is something that personally motivates me.”

Highly respected for his healthcare technology expertise and as an entrepreneur in solutions for the physician practice management and electronic medical record (EMR) industry, Maurice is a frequent speaker on technology, and advocate for healthcare technology innovation. Rosenbaum earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Tulane University in New Orleans, where he also studied biomedical engineering. Active in many community organizations, he is a long-standing member of TAG Health Board of Directors (Technology Alliance of Georgia), Medical Group Manager’s Association (MGMA), and the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS).
