Scottsdale Institute CNIO and CMIO Summits Explore Care Standardization

Bringing together our member CNIOs and CMIOs released remarkable energy and excitement about harmonizing the CDS-supported care process – a collaboration so vital to standardizing care across the nation.

Chief Nursing Information Officers (CNIOs) and Chief Medical Information Officers (CMIOs) from 26 leading healthcare organizations gathered Sept. 18-20 in Chicago for the Scottsdale Institute 2019 CNIO and CMIO Summits to discuss care standardization, how to reduce the cognitive burden of the EMR, data quality, documentation, managing CDS content and improving clinician satisfaction.

The CNIO and CMIO Summits were hosted by Scottsdale Institute, a not-for-profit membership organization of health systems advanced in IT, and sponsored by Impact Advisors, a healthcare IT consultancy, and LogicStream Health, a leading provider of clinical process improvement and control software. As Scottsdale Institute’s first combined CNIO/CMIO agenda, the Summits placed special emphasis on developing strong partnerships between CNIOs and CMIOs and resulted in a single, combined white paper.

The CNIO/CMIO Summit Report, “Care Standardization: Why and How to Make this Work,” highlights the conversations and lessons learned from the event. A copy of the report is available for download through the Scottsdale Institute, Impact Advisors and LogicStream Health websites.

“Scottsdale Institute’s mission is to convene the right executives to discuss the right issues facing healthcare leaders in today’s fast-paced, tech-enabled world,” says Janet Guptill, Executive Director of the Scottsdale Institute. “Bringing together our member CNIOs and CMIOs released remarkable energy and excitement about harmonizing the CDS-supported care process – a collaboration so vital to standardizing care across the nation.”

“We were excited to be a part of this Summit, as many takeaways and next steps emerged from the discussions and collaboration around the topic of care standardization,” said Angela R. Tiberio, MD, Physician Executive at Impact Advisors. “Attendees agreed that serving as a CMIO or CNIO places them in a unique position to very positively impact some of healthcare’s biggest challenges, including optimizing processes for maximal quality, safety, value and access, as well as provider and patient satisfaction. Attendees identified several key focus areas for the future, including continued venues for CMIO/CNIO collaboration; benchmarking and analytics to demonstrate “success”; addressing clinician/physician burnout; and advancing the overall profession. We look forward to seeing where these conversations lead us over the next year and beyond.”

“The burden of variation in clinical documentation and the lack of standardization is clearly a problem for healthcare providers today,” said Luis Saldaña, MD, CMIO LogicStream Health. “The Summit was a highly productive forum for numerous leading CNIOs and CMIOs to connect and share excellent insights about ways to address this problem in their respective organizations. As a group, we committed to continuing the conversation and advancing our collective efforts to set the standard for driving improvement across all of healthcare.”

Resist the Cost-Cut Bias and Invest for Success – Industry Analysis by Loyale Healthcare

In a changing marketplace, Hospitals and Health Systems must approach their 2020 planning and budgeting differently

To use the words of one Loyale client, “Spending money is not bad if it generates incremental EBITDA.” – Kevin Fleming, CEO, Loyale Healthcare

In business and in life, when funds are tight it’s tempting to conclude that the best solution is to spend less. In practice, though, a preoccupation with reducing expenses can blind us to the potential for smart new investments to not only reduce expenses in other areas, but to improve our overall financial condition.

Basically, hospitals, health systems and other providers have two levers to pull when challenged by inadequate financial performance. They can reduce expenses by cutting programs and investments in hard assets and/or reduce the cost of labor (one of the largest contributors to healthcare’s costs). Or they can spend on systems and solutions that allow them to attract new business and revenue.

Before examining how each of these levers can be used to optimize operating and financial outcomes for healthcare providers and their patients, it’s necessary to consider the condition of the industry and the priorities that healthcare executives are facing in a dynamic and rapidly changing marketplace.

Each year, the Health Care Executive Group publishes its HCEG Top 10, the product of a two and a half day interactive discussion among 100 healthcare executives representing providers, payers and technology partners. At this year’s gathering, participating executives ranked the following challenges, issues and opportunities as their top 10 for 2020, which we’ve summarized below.

The Top 10 Challenges, Issues and Opportunities Healthcare Executives Will Face in 2020

  • 1. Cost and Transparency – Strategies to “address the growth of medical and pharmaceutical costs and impacts to access and quality of care”
  • 2. Consumer Experience – “Assuring that all consumer interactions and outcomes are easy, convenient, timely, streamlined and cohesive”
  • 3. Delivery System Transformation – “Scaling coordination and delivery system transformation of medical and non-medical services…to overcome barriers…and effect better outcomes”
  • 4. Data & Analytics – “Leveraging advanced analytics and new sources of disparate, non-standard, unstructured, highly variable data to improve health outcomes, reduce administrative burdens and support transition from volume to value…”
  • 5. Interoperability / Consumer Data Access – To… “Bring value of aggregated data and systems on a near real-time and cost-effective basis to all stakeholders equitably”
  • 6. Holistic Individual Health – “Identifying and improving the member / patient’s overall…well-being for a frictionless and connected healthcare experience”
  • 7. Next Generation Payment Models – “Infrastructure and programs for a more collaborative and equitable approach to manage costs…”
  • 8. Accessible Points of Care – “Telehealth, MHealth, wearables, digital devices, retail clinics, home-based care, micro-hospitals”
  • 9. Healthcare Policy – “Dealing with current healthcare policy regulation, political uncertainty/antagonism…”
  • 10. Privacy / Security – “Staying ahead of cybersecurity threats…to enhance consumer trust in sharing data”

Based on the conclusions of this and a variety of other industry organizations and analysts, it’s clear that patients – the consumers of healthcare – are the dominant consideration for healthcare in 2020. Healthcare’s consumer age, described by PwC as The New Health Economy, is at last upon us. Consumers, with the support of regulators and a motivated administration are looking for a different kind of healthcare experience and it’s very different from what many of us are used to.

We have written extensively about the market phenomena driving the ascension of the consumer. From high out-of-pocket expenses associated with increasing prices and high deductible health plans, to the dramatically shifting expectations of Millennials, to the emergence of new lower-cost competitors launched by proven customer-first organizations. These and other marketplace dynamics are compelling patients to look for better value and more convenience, even if it comes at the expense of a provider relationship.

With the understanding that healthcare providers must find a way to compete in this new, more consumer-centric marketplace, planning and budgeting for 2020 calls for a more balanced approach to managing costs and optimizing revenues. In this environment, healthcare’s tendency to rely too heavily on cost-cutting carries significant risks. Risks that will intensify as the consumer marketplace becomes more firmly established.

Cost Cutting that Makes Sense

At the outset, we’ll state flatly that merely cutting costs is folly. The risks are too great. Of course, scrutinizing costs is a best practice in any high functioning enterprise. But doing so can be a formidable challenge for large, complex organizations like a health system. With broad investments in people, equipment, real estate, compliance and technology systems, identifying real “fat” in the ecosystem can seem impossible. And in an increasingly competitive marketplace, the consequences of cutting into the “lean” can actually exacerbate the financial problem.

Healthcare providers have at least two constituencies to consider when looking to cut costs; their patients – the above-mentioned consumers; and their associates – particularly their physicians and other clinical and administrative employees. For-profit systems must also consider shareholders. Each of these stakeholders has high expectations; the patient for competent, preferably exceptional care; the doctors and nurses for adequate staffing, competitive compensation and a livable workplace experience. And, when applicable, shareholders expect a return on their investment.

With consumers wielding greater influence on provider revenue than ever before, it doesn’t make sense to reduce costs that could have an impact on accessibility or the patient experience. Similarly, already overburdened clinicians are facing unprecedented burnout and turnover. This is no time to cut costs that could impair their experience or productivity.

Here, technology offers the greatest promise for reducing expenses. Leveraging automation, artificial intelligence and data-driven insights, the workflows that make a health system or hospital work can be made more efficient and less costly. At the same time, these more efficient systems enable the provider to deliver a demonstrably better experience to patients – and to the people who care for them.

The key is to use technology that doesn’t add to healthcare’s already tangled clutter of disparate systems. By partnering with companies like Loyale Healthcare in the area of patient financial engagement, providers are able to integrate multiple systems to deliver vastly better patient experiences while gaining invaluable business intelligence. By unifying systems and the unstructured, highly variable data they capture, providers find that they are able to make dramatic reductions to their billing and collection costs and set the stage for revenue growth.

Making the Case for Smart Investments to Preserve, Grow Margins

We have already hinted at the smartest budget moves in preparation for 2020, smart investments – principally in technology that optimizes existing systems to specifically address each of the priorities, challenges and opportunities in the HCEG Top 10 list above.

In our own experiences working with some of America’s largest healthcare providers, we’ve demonstrated how integration-enabled optimization can lead to millions in cost take-outs. Further we’re showing that the additional revenue opportunities made possible by better patient engagement and end-to-end transparency make the “expense” associated with a Loyale partnership an excellent business investment.

Some cost- and margin-conscious healthcare executives are hesitant to make these investments because in certain instances some of their largest investments have actually presented shorter-term inefficiencies. Electronic Healthcare Records (EHR) systems are an example.

No healthcare executive would argue that they should not have made the investment in their EHR system. The question now is how to better leverage the system’s considerable breadth to create a more consumer-centered organization. Loyale Patient Financial Manager is one such system. By integrating the EHR with multiple systems affecting the patient’s financial experience, we’re extracting more value from the EHR and empowering providers and patients with a digital front door they actually want to use.

Technology to improve patient engagement is just one area where smart investments promise favorable financial returns and set the course for addressing healthcare’s challenges and priorities. Others include:

  • Investments in ambulatory surgical centers and other lower-cost facilities.
  • Telehealth and other digital care delivery models with relatively low costs and expanded scale
  • EHR systems: Despite the above-mentioned potential for creating inefficiencies, these systems are essential to the delivery of care in the modern healthcare setting. When optimized, however, EHRs can be a critical component in the delivery of holistic, patient/consumer-centered care that considers every dimension of the care experience.

To use the words of one Loyale client, “Spending money is not bad if it generates incremental EBITDA.” As the American healthcare industry braces for another year of political and regulatory volatility, we can be sure that consumers’ expectations of us will only intensify. Lower-cost competitors and potential competitors like Haven Healthcare, CVS Health, Walgreens Health and Walmart Health are making preparations to meet those consumers where they are. The rest of the industry must be prepared to do the same.

American Nurses Foundation Partners With Compass One Healthcare To Help Improve Nurses’ Health And Well-Being

American Nurses Foundation

Despite vast knowledge about health and wellness, the health of the average nurse is worse than that of the average American.

Today the American Nurses Foundation announced that leading health care support service company Compass One Healthcare has joined the Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation™ (HNHN) Grand Challenge as a partner to improve the nutritional habits of America’s four million nurses.

HNHN is a social movement that engages more than 500 partner organizations and over 130,000 participants to act in five key domains – physical activity, rest, nutrition, quality of life, and safety – to transform the health of the nation by improving the health of nurses. Compass One Healthcare will help expand the nutritional focus with new content and challenges to engage more nurses in HNHN.

“As the largest and most trusted group of health care professionals, nurses’ health and well-being is vital to the health of our nation,” said the Executive Director of the American Nurses Foundation, Kate Judge. “The research shows that when clinicians are healthy, they provide better council to patients about healthy behaviors and can help create healthier communities. We believe our efforts with and through Compass One Healthcare can make a significant difference in the health of our nurses. We are grateful for their commitment to the nursing profession.”

Despite vast knowledge about health and wellness, the health of the average nurse is worse than that of the average American. Nurses everywhere tend to have a less nutritious diet. In a 2019 HNHN survey, 72% of nurses who responded said they have three or less servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Only 13% said they eat the recommended five servings of fruits and vegetables daily. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that all individuals eat between three-to-five servings of whole grains and five-to-nine servings of fruits and vegetables daily. In the same survey, 30% of nurses said they don’t feel they have access to healthy food choices at work.

“This partnership elevates Compass One Healthcare’s commitment to support all of the nurses we serve alongside, freeing them up to do what they do best: take care of their patients,” said Compass One Healthcare CEO Bobby Kutteh. “Our expertise in food and nutrition, environmental, patient transport, and other support services provides a unique opportunity to support the Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation Grand Challenge. In particular, we are looking to leverage our Power of Food and Welcome Experience platforms to bolster the health of our nurse partners.”

“In our health care space, nursing is the cornerstone,” said SVP Strategic Partnerships Bart Kaericher. “That’s why this partnership with the ANA’s Healthy Nurse, Healthy Nation is so exciting for us. We can make a huge difference for our nurse partners by offering them healthy and delicious meals and by taking some of the stress off them by providing a safe environment of care.”

Both individuals and organizational partners can learn about the HNHN by visiting hnhn.org.

Dry Eye, Dry Skin & Health Olympics Education Discussed On Sharon Kleyne Talk Radio

Air Date: 9 December 2019

Guest: Anouche Moshari Roberts, M.D., The Liquid Facelift and Laser Center, Northern Virginia

https://www.voiceamerica.com/episode/119096/do-you-suffer-from-dry-eye-and-dry-skin

“We humans,” says Sharon Kleyne, founder and research director of Bio Logic Aqua® Research Water Life Science® in Grants Pass, Oregon and the host of the internationally syndicated radio program, The Sharon Kleyne Hour Water Life Science®/Nature’s Pharma®, The Power of Water® & Your Health sponsored by Nature’s Tears® EyeMist® on VoiceAmerica and produced by Rose Hong, founder and director of Global Dragon TV in Washington, D.C., “have a tendency to take for granted and ignore what is all around us—water. Yet, what is happening to the human body is also happening to the planet earth and the solar system. Have you noticed,” continues Kleyne, “that everything seems out of control? I blame that on the lack of education. So, I decided to start the educational Health Olympics.”

The moment one is born, Kleyne teaches, one begins to evaporate water. “From birth,” Kleyne says, “we should be educating ourselves about our health, about living in rhythm with the planet and the solar system.” Kleyne accuses politicians of not making water a priority, “Dry eye, for example, is vision impairment from birth. The surface of the eye is 99 percent water. It is common sense!” Kleyne insists. “You must drink pure water—one full glass at a time—throughout the day and night. If you don’t drink enough water, dry eye will get worse, and that can lead to additional impairment and potential blindness.” That is why Kleyne invented Nature’s Tears® EyeMist®, pure water technology to supplement the always-evaporating tear film. “We need to improve the water education of our children,” Kleyne says.

Anouche Moshari Roberts, trained as an ophthalmologist, born in Iran, raised in Germany and guiding The Liquid Facelift and Laser Center in Northern Virginia, agrees. “Dry eye is common,” Roberts commiserates. “The good news is you can treat it easily; the bad news is that it can cause vision problems.” Roberts shares that dry eye symptoms include a scratchy feeling, like sand in the eye, stinging, redness and blurred vision. “Also,” Roberts reveals, “children are staring too much at screens. This dries out the oil ducts around the tear film. Children need to be taught to remember to blink regularly. They’re also not drinking enough water during the day.”

Roberts’s The Liquid Facelift and Laser Center offers revolutionary non-invasive i-Lipo body contouring laser treatments, as well as treatments with the Icon Laser by Palomar Medical. Yet, Roberts agrees with Kleyne that it all begins with getting a handle on body water evaporation if one hopes to maintain healthy eyes and skin.

Drinking water, supplementing the eyes with Nature’s Tears® EyeMist®, educating ourselves from birth about water vapor evaporation and supplemental water technology, and embracing the Health Olympics will finally get dry eye, dry skin and blindness under control,” says Kleyne.
