Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer Updates its Clinical Immunotherapy Treatment Guidelines for Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma

SITC Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines

“Through initiatives like the SITC Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines, SITC seeks to provide an important and well documented resource of information to oncologists and other clinical care providers so that they can achieve the best outcomes for their patients,” said SITC President Mario Sznol, MD.

Motivated by the substantial progress in translational and clinical research and improved clinical outcomes seen in recent years, the Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer (SITC) today published updated Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines for the treatment of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma.

The Society for Immunotherapy of Cancer consensus statement on immunotherapy for the treatment of advanced renal cell carcinoma (RCC),” authored under the guidance of the SITC Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines Renal Cell Carcinoma Subcommittee, provides oncologists and other advanced practice providers an updated clinical roadmap to treating this disease with immunotherapies approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), including the promising class of therapies known as checkpoint inhibitors.

“Immunotherapies using interferon-alpha and interleukin-2 have been the only available options for initial treatment of patients with advanced renal cell carcinoma for the past couple of decades and some patients have benefited tremendously,” said Michael B. Atkins, MD, co-chair of the SITC Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines Renal Cell Carcinoma Subcommittee. “Now that checkpoint inhibitors are FDA-approved and available for a broad population of patients, our SITC subcommittee developed this manuscript to help provide medical oncologists with expert guidance for incorporating various immunotherapy agents and regimens into their practice.”

The SITC guidelines are comprised of consensus expert recommendations that serve to inform clinicians about all aspects of patient management for advanced renal cell carcinoma during immunotherapy. Updated to reflect the U.S. FDA approval of checkpoint inhibitors as front-line treatments for renal cell carcinoma, the publication includes consensus statements on treatment selection and sequencing, the use of predictive biomarkers and appropriate patient testing, and the management of adverse events. Published in the Journal for ImmunoTherapy of Cancer (JITC), the society’s open access, peer-reviewed online journal, the guidelines are an update to the society’s previously published renal cell carcinoma treatment recommendations from November 2016.

“One of the most important objectives for SITC is to disseminate the latest advances in cancer immunotherapy research,” said SITC President Mario Sznol, MD. “Through initiatives like the SITC Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines, SITC seeks to provide an important and well documented resource of information to oncologists and other clinical care providers so that they can achieve the best outcomes for their patients.”

The SITC Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines are a collection of unbiased consensus statements developed by leading experts to help oncologists determine when and how to best use immunotherapy to treat their patients. SITC has published Cancer Immunotherapy Guidelines on cutaneous melanoma, prostate and bladder carcinomas, head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, non-small cell lung cancer and hematologic malignancies. Additional guidelines are in development covering acute leukemia, lymphoma, multiple myeloma and immune-related adverse events.

Join Free Webinar to Learn More about these Guidelines with Leading Experts

Oncologists, nurses and other members of the cancer care team can continue their learning by participating in a free SITC webinar dedicated to discussion of the HNSCC guidelines on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2020, at 11 a.m. EST. The following experts will present during the free webinar and lead a question-and-answer session with participants: Michael B. Atkins, MD (Georgetown-Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center); Dena Battle (KCCure); David McDermott, MD (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center); and Brian Rini, MD (Vanderbilt University Medical Center).

Mediaplanet and Healthcare Experts Team Up to Spotlight Important Health and Safety Tools This Flu Season

News Image

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that influenza claims the lives of between 12,000 and 61,000 annually and a shocking 80,000 in 2017.

As flu season continues, Mediaplanet today announces the launch of this December’s edition of “Fighting the Flu.” This campaign spotlights the dangers of the influenza virus, which is extremely common and, in some cases, deadly. Healthcare experts and other advocates point to key steps to prevent the flu, especially among children, as well as how to care for those who are ill.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that influenza claims the lives of between 12,000 and 61,000 annually and a shocking 80,000 in 2017. Some experts say an influenza pandemic in the future is possible, which is why researchers are working hard to create new and more effective treatments to fight the illness. In the meantime, experts across the board urge everyone who can get the influenza vaccine, as it is the single best defense there is against the virus. Experts also advise washing hands often and thoroughly with soap and water, disinfecting all surfaces, and avoiding contact with the nose, eyes, and mouth.

The print component of “Fighting the Flu” is distributed within today’s edition of USA Today in Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, South Florida, New York, and Washington DC/Baltimore markets, with a circulation of approximately 200,000 copies and an estimated readership of 600,000. The digital component is distributed nationally, through a vast social media strategy, and across a network of top news sites and partner outlets. To explore the digital version of the campaign, visit: https://www.futureofpersonalhealth.com/campaign/fighting-the-flu/

The family of a young mother who lost her life after a weeks-long battle with an aggressive strain of flu virus, shares her story within the publication, in the hopes their tragedy will encourage others to take important prevention steps. Kendra Mann-O’Brien was a healthy mother of two when she caught the virus, which progressed rapidly and, despite life-saving efforts, eventually claimed her life. Her mother, Joan, is now an outspoken advocate for the flu vaccine, which is the single best way to prevent the spread of the illness and its associated complications.

Online, celebrity doctor, Dr. Oz, shares his best tips for flu prevention and care. In addition to getting the vaccine and regularly washing hands, Dr. Oz advises making healthy choices to strengthen and support the immune system. “Sleeping for seven to nine hours a night is a good way to do this, since sleep is an important regulator of immune function,” he says, continuing, “Eating lots of fruits and vegetables and other foods rich in vitamin C, vitamin B6, and vitamin E will also help your immune system.”

This campaign was made possible with the support of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Families Fighting Flu, National Foundation for Infectious Diseases, American Hospital Association, American Heart Association, American Red Cross, Healthline, Commonwealth Care Alliance, National PTA, American Lung Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, HealthyChildren.org, Consumer Healthcare Products Association, American Pharmacists Association, Medical News Today, Prevention.com, Dr. Oz, Luden’s, Chloraseptic, CleanWell, Nissin Foods, Carmex, and Dollar Tree.

NeoTract Designates Dr. Adam Shrewsberry as UroLift® Center of Excellence

News Image

“This designation recognizes Dr. Adam Shrewsberry as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing safe and effective treatment to patients with BPH,” said Dave Amerson

NeoTract, a wholly owned subsidiary of Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE:TFX) focused on addressing unmet needs in the field of urology, today announced that Adam Shrewsberry M.D., Tennessee Urology in Oak Ridge, TN, has been designated as a UroLift® Center of Excellence. The designation recognizes that Dr. Shrewsberry has achieved a high level of training and experience with the UroLift® System and demonstrated a commitment to exemplary care for men suffering from symptoms associated with Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), also known as enlarged prostate.

Recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines, the FDA-cleared Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to BPH. The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue.

The UroLift Center of Excellence program is designed to highlight urologists who are committed to educating their patients on BPH and the UroLift System as a treatment option and consistently seek to deliver excellent patient outcomes and experiences.

“This designation recognizes Dr. Adam Shrewsberry as a UroLift Center of Excellence for his commitment to providing safe and effective treatment to patients with BPH,” said Dave Amerson, president of the Teleflex Interventional Urology business unit. “We are pleased to see the continued acceptance of the UroLift System as a standard of care treatment that may allow men to discontinue the use of BPH medications and improve their quality of life.”

Over 40 million men in the United States are affected by BPH, a condition that occurs when the prostate gland that surrounds the male urethra becomes enlarged with advancing age and begins to obstruct the urinary system. Symptoms of BPH often include interrupted sleep and urinary problems and can cause loss of productivity, depression and decreased quality of life.

Medication is often the first-line therapy for enlarged prostate, but relief can be inadequate and temporary. Side effects of medication treatment can include sexual dysfunction, dizziness and headaches, prompting many patients to quit using the drugs. For these patients, the classic alternative is surgery that cuts, heats or removes prostate tissue to open the blocked urethra. While current surgical options can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patients with permanent side effects such as urinary incontinence, erectile dysfunction, and retrograde ejaculation.

About the UroLift® System

The FDA-cleared UroLift System is a proven, minimally invasive technology for treating lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The UroLift permanent implants, delivered during a minimally invasive transurethral outpatient procedure, relieve prostate obstruction and open the urethra directly without cutting, heating, or removing prostate tissue. Clinical data from a pivotal 206-patient randomized controlled study showed that patients with enlarged prostate receiving UroLift implants reported rapid and durable symptomatic and urinary flow rate improvement without compromising sexual function*1,2. Patients also experienced a significant improvement in quality of life. Over 100,000 men have been treated with the UroLift System in the U.S. Most common adverse events reported include hematuria, dysuria, micturition urgency, pelvic pain, and urge incontinence. Most symptoms were mild to moderate in severity and resolved within two to four weeks after the procedure. The Prostatic Urethral Lift procedure using the UroLift System is recommended for the treatment of BPH in both the American Urological Association and European Association of Urology clinical guidelines. The UroLift System is available in the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada, Mexico and South Korea. Learn more at http://www.UroLift.com.

Mercy College Receives New York State Approval to Expand Nursing Program Online and at the Dobbs Ferry, Manhattan and Bronx Campuses

Mercy College

Mercy College is pleased to announce the official approval of the New York State Education Department to expand the College’s nursing programs to provide increased degree offerings online and at the Dobbs Ferry, MercyManhattan and Bronx Campuses. The new degree programs, part of the College’s School of Health and Natural Sciences, were added to help alleviate the nursing shortage in the Tri-State area and across the nation. The expanded programs also provided a seamless pathway for students to continue their education after the former College of New Rochelle (CNR) ceased academic operations in August 2019.

“Mercy College has established a comprehensive nursing program under the guidance of Dr. Deborah Hunt and Dr. Miriam Ford that will provide current and prospective nurses with numerous educational opportunities,” said Joan Toglia, Dean of the School of Health and Natural Sciences. “Mercy bridges the gap between what nursing students learn in a classroom setting and real-life experiences in a health care setting – resulting in sought after job placements of our graduates.”

“Having a quality academic institution like Mercy College anticipate and respond to the needs of the market helps provide economic value to the entire Tri-State region,” said William M. Mooney, Jr., President and CEO of The Westchester County Association. “We are looking forward to working with the College as it helps to fill the region’s nursing shortage.”

Mercy’s four-year traditional nursing program, which launched in 2015 and has been at capacity since its inception, has now tripled in size. The first cohort of 23 students were recognized at a pinning ceremony in May 2019 and on December 20, 2019, the first cohort of 106 teach-out students from the former CNR will celebrate their pinning ceremony.

“There’s great demand for highly trained nurses,” explained Deborah Hunt ‘86, Ph.D., R.N., Professor and Executive Director of Nursing Special Programs, and former Interim Dean of CNR’s School of Nursing and Health Professions. “Mercy is providing nursing programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels as patient demands become more complex and the aging population requires increased levels of care and nurses who practice from a holistic perspective who are able to think critically, utilize current evidence, and promote positive patient outcomes.”

Based on unemployment projections by The Bureau of Labor Statistics, there is an estimated need for more than 200,000 new registered nurses each year through 2026 to help fill jobs vacated by retirees. Mercy is working to combat this decline by increasing the nursing talent in our communities through in-demand undergraduate and graduate degree programs. Undergraduate programs include the Accelerated Second Degree in Nursing, Traditional Nursing (four-year program) and the R.N. to B.S. program. The College also offers opportunities for nurses to earn their master’s degrees in three areas, including Family Nurse Practitioner, Nursing Administration and Nursing Education. The College is planning to offer additional nursing programs in the future and has applied for approval to teach Traditional Nursing in the Bronx.

“It is important to tailor courses for busy nurse professionals,” said Miriam Ford, Ph.D, FNP-BC, Chief Nurse Administrator and Director of Dobbs Ferry and MercyManhattan. “These new program offerings at multiple locations will ensure student success by providing individualized attention, convenient scheduling and small class sizes.”

In addition to new course offerings, the College has created state-of-the-art classrooms that replicate real-world clinical lab and hospital environments. They include the Health Professions Clinical Simulation Lab, Hospital Simulation Lab and a cutting-edge 12,000 square foot space that includes specialized labs designed to simulate different disciplines within a health care facility. In addition, nursing students have access to the Health Assessment Lab which allows them to learn to conduct health assessments in a setting supplied with equipment typically seen in hospitals and clinics.

For additional information on these programs and locations please contact Miriam Ford mford@mercy.edu or 914-674-7865.

It’s amazing enough that the Color Quest YouTube video has over 29 million views, but we’re especially proud that the app has received 5 star reviews from Apple’s Educational App Store and has been the number one trending education app in Google Play,” said John Collins, Stayhealthy’s CEO. “Now with the app passing one million downloads, it really sends the message that parents and children are welcoming the opportunity to learn about health and nutrition at the same time they’re having fun.”

The Snack Town All-Stars’ new release, “The Healthy Holiday Mashup”, features a medley of the most popular holiday songs with fun messaging about health throughout. The track is the latest in Stayhealthy Music and Entertainment’s music and dance videos for children that combine active engagement and education about healthy lifestyles. The band’s first release, “The Stayhealthy Shake”, which has over 700,000 views on YouTube (and with the Holiday Mashup now has over 100,000 streams), was developed to meet the company’s ongoing mission of encouraging children to be more active.

Stayhealthy Music and Entertainment was founded by Stayhealthy, Inc., a company dedicated to innovating new ways of engaging, educating and empowering people about their personal health and wellness. The new company has recently signed with Universal Music Group on worldwide distribution for its children’s music.

Horizon Healthcare Services, Inc. Collaborates with HGE Health to help Providers improve the Pulmonary/COPD Health Status of its Members

“HGE Health will offer Horizon members service and support that makes health care work the way it should – better quality care, an improved patient experience, and lower overall costs,” said Robert J. Franzoi, Vice President Healthcare Management for Horizon.

HGE Health, a healthcare technology company that works worldwide with pulmonologists, primary care physicians and patients, will be contracting with Horizon Healthcare Services, Inc., New Jersey’s largest health insurer with approximately 3.4 million members, to collaborate with it on improving the Pulmonary/COPD Health Status of its Members.

With this collaboration, which is being finalized for implementation starting in early 2020, HGE’s technology and remote patient monitoring services will help Horizon members better control their pulmonary/COPD issues, greatly reducing clinical exacerbations, ER presentations, hospital admissions and related medical costs attributable to COPD symptoms.

“This is an exciting opportunity for HGE to accelerate data-driven personalized medicine and help physicians better direct the health and disease issues of their patients while supporting health plans in controlling the cost of that care,” said Michael J. Markus, PhD, CEO of HGE Health. “Horizon is a proven leader when it comes to providing tools to employers and health care professionals that help them improve the health and well-being of their employees and patients. We’re excited to unite our mutual capabilities towards that goal, especially where COPD and pulmonary issues are concerned.”

Based in Philadelphia, HGE Health has built an international reputation in the field of COPD and pulmonary medicine, helping COPD, lung transplant and other respiratory patients and their physicians control pulmonary issues.

A growing and devastating disease, COPD is the third leading cause of death in the U.S. An estimated 12.7 million American adults are diagnosed with the condition every year and an almost equal number are believed to be undiagnosed. Hospital discharges related to COPD typically exceed 700,000 in the U.S. alone. The costs of managing COPD in the U.S. have been estimated to be nearly $50 billion annually, including $29.5 billion in direct healthcare expenditures, $8 billion in indirect morbidity costs and $12.4 billion in indirect mortality costs.

The HGE digital platform and technology-enabled services, called HGE Care, allows pulmonary and primary care physicians to remotely care for a patient from anywhere in the nation, and help patients better understand and manage changes in their COPD symptoms. The HGE Care platform identifies early changes in a patient’s respiratory symptoms and prompts a patient’s own physician to initiate a clinical response, often before patients themselves would have previously sought medical attention. Thanks to daily digital interaction with their healthcare team, patients are better engaged in their own symptom management, and log their symptoms on the HGE Care platform over 80% – 90% of the time. Patients enjoy peace of mind that each day they experience a change from their typical COPD symptoms, their own physician/care team provides same-day feedback, helping patients breathe easier, avoid ER presentations and hospital admissions, and enjoy an improved quality of life, all while reducing overall healthcare cost for patients and health systems.

In collaboration with Horizon and at no cost to its Members, HGE Health will be working with physicians in New Jersey to launch this new program and to identify, onboard, and support Horizon’s Members who are living with COPD and that the program would benefit.

“Helping our members achieve their best health means providing them the support and tools they need to effectively manage their health challenges and HGE will give patients living with chronic conditions that affect their ability to breath, like COPD, a direct and real-time link to their doctors,” said Robert J. Franzoi, Vice President Healthcare Management for Horizon. “HGE Health will offer Horizon members service and support that makes health care work the way it should. Their innovative service model has been clinically proven to meaningfully improve the lives of the patients it serves and lower the overall cost of care by helping reduce emergency room presentations and inpatient admissions. Better quality care, an improved patient experience, and lower overall costs is exactly the kind of solution Horizon eagerly embraces and we’re excited to be among the first health insurers in the nation to contract with HGE Health.”
