Survey Finds EMS May Not Be Prepared to Treat Children for Deadly Sepsis – the Leading Cause of Death of Infants and Small Children Worldwide

It is extremely worrying to learn that a majority of EMS are often not starting lifesaving treatment in the field, because the data consistently show that early sepsis treatment saves lives and improves outcomes.

Today, Sepsis Alliance and the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians (NAEMT) released the results of their Pediatric Sepsis and EMS survey. The survey found that only 41% of emergency medical services providers (EMS) are very confident in their ability to recognize the signs and symptoms of sepsis in children. This is in contrast to the majority (82%) of EMS who are very confident in recognizing pediatric asthma. Sepsis is the body’s life-threatening response to infection.

In the United States, sepsis takes the lives of more children than pediatric cancers and accounts for 100,000 pediatric emergency department visits each year. Yet, only 54% of survey respondents are very aware of sepsis symptoms in children. In addition, 66% of respondents do not often initiate treatment in the field for pediatric patients with sepsis.

“It is extremely worrying to learn that a majority of EMS are often not starting lifesaving treatment in the field, because the data consistently show that early sepsis treatment saves lives and improves outcomes,” said Rom Duckworth, LP, award-winning EMS Educator, career Fire Captain with 30 years of experience, and Sepsis Alliance Advisory Board member.

“Recognizing the signs and symptoms of sepsis in our youngest patients should be a priority for EMS organizations, to increase practitioner confidence,” said Dr. Katherine Remick, Emergency Pediatric Care Medical Director, NAEMT. “NAEMT, in partnership with Sepsis Alliance, is committed to providing prehospital practitioners with the education to recognize and treat sepsis in the field.”

The Sepsis Institute, an online learning platform created by Sepsis Alliance, and the Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) teamed up to launch Sepsis: Pediatric First Response, a training module to help teach prehospital and emergency medical clinicians how to identify, assess, and begin treatment for pediatric patients with sepsis. The training module, presented by Duckworth, features two case studies and expert commentary by Charles Macias, MD, MPH, Chief Division of Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Vice Chair of Quality & Safety/Chief Quality Officer, UH Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital.

The module also includes introductory remarks from the late Edward J. Gabriel, MPA, EMT-P, CEM, CBCP, who served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Incident Command and Control, Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This training module is offered for continuing education credits for physicians and nurses.

“The partnership between Sepsis Alliance and CHA is a valuable extension of the work of children’s hospitals to significantly reduce and better manage sepsis in children through our Improving Pediatric Sepsis Outcomes collaborative,” said CHA Chief Operating Officer Amy Knight. “We’re excited to widen our spread of evidence-based practice to any provider caring for children. Early recognition and intervention are critical to better outcomes.”

The Sepsis: Pediatric First Response training module has been funded in part with Federal contract funds from the Department of Health and Human Services; Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response; Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), Division of Research, Innovation, and Ventures (DRIVe). Additional support for the training module and accompanying video was provided by the Del E. Webb Foundation.

Sepsis Alliance also released a companion video to the training module. The video, targeting emergency providers and parents, portrays a real-life story of a pediatric sepsis case with expert interviews incorporated from Duckworth and Dr. Macias. The video also includes expert insights from Runa Gokhale, MD, MPH, Medical Officer, Division of Healthcare Quality Promotion, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

San Diego Start-up and UC San Diego Researchers Announce Study Results of Infection Control Technology to Eliminate Stethoscope Pathogen Transmissions

News Image

The study results confirm the DiskCover System elevates stethoscope hygiene and sets a new standard in patient safety. The DiskCover System will also save a tremendous amount of time for busy doctors and nurses who struggle with thoroughly cleaning stethoscopes before and after each exam.

AseptiScope, Inc. and clinical researchers from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine announce study results that confirm aseptic medical grade barriers, when applied to stethoscopes before clinical examinations, eliminate patient exposure to harmful bacteria, including the superbug MRSA. In the controlled study published today in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, investigators evaluated the presence of harmful bacteria and human contaminants on unprotected stethoscopes compared to stethoscopes that were covered by single-use barriers. When applied to stethoscopes, the barriers prevented the growth of infectious anaerobes, yeasts and antibiotic-resistant bacteria, including vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), extended spectrum beta-lactamase producing Escherichia coli, and multi-drug resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stethoscopes are known to harbor dangerous pathogens and should be cleaned for at least one minute with an alcohol- or bleach-based disinfectant before and after each patient interaction. However, as evidenced by abundant stethoscope contamination studies, disinfection procedures are infrequently or inadequately performed. The risk of infectious disease transmission is of significant concern to the healthcare system, as nearly 700,000 U.S. cases of hospital acquired infections (HAIs) were reported in 2015. HAIs significantly increase hospital length of stay, cost of care, use of isolation procedures, and high mortality rates.

Today’s study results strongly suggest the applied barriers enable sterile contact with patients and protect from transmission of bacteria, viruses and yeasts that might contaminate stethoscope diaphragms.

“Stethoscope contamination introduces an unnecessary risk of infectious disease transmission,” said Dr. David T. Pride, Associate Professor of Pathology and Medicine and Principle Investigator on the UC San Diego study. “Although we have ongoing work to further address the risk of contamination, this effectiveness study demonstrates a potential patient safety benefit can be achieved using a barrier approach.”

AseptiScope is poised to launch its novel system that addresses stethoscope contamination in early 2020. The wall-mounted, touch-free AseptiScope DiskCover™ System dispenses a disk-shaped barrier in about a second to stethoscopes, creating an aseptic surface during patient examinations. In addition to a clean surface, the barrier is designed to also maintain high quality acoustics clinicians require.

“The study results confirm the DiskCover System elevates stethoscope hygiene and sets a new standard in patient safety,” said Scott Mader, CEO and President of AseptiScope. “The DiskCover System will also save a tremendous amount of time for busy doctors and nurses who struggle with thoroughly cleaning stethoscopes before and after each exam.”

Tampa health care expert unveils health care plan using artificial intelligence, genetics, medical case management to save taxpayers $1.4 trillion per year

News Image

“I realized that in order to be taken seriously, I needed to take my plan directly to the American public, so that’s what I am doing,” said Roberts. “At the end of the day, the focus of my plan is on improving cost-effectiveness, while also improving the quality of care delivered.”

TAMPA, Fla. – Local health care expert and medical case management consultant Paul Roberts has spent two decades working to develop more efficient ways to improve healthcare, and now the 47-year-old is attempting his most ambitious task – to reform America’s health care system.

“There’s no question about it, our healthcare system is broken and that really is something that all Americans can get behind, regardless of their political ideologies,” said Roberts. “It affects all of us and we need to address it before costs skyrocket even more.”

According to Roberts, his alternative plan will save tax payers an estimated 40 percent over Medicare for All, while enhancing the overall quality of care.

Roberts calls his plan Coordinated Care for All, and while it is modeled somewhat like a single-payer government-managed healthcare system, there would be no mandate to participate. Private sector competition would continue by allowing people to opt out. The plan could also be easily adopted for use in the private sector as well.

Roberts’s plan focuses on several key areas including prediction of risk, education, prevention, cost containment, efficiency, and medical case management, combining all of these target areas of focus with a centralized computer system, while utilizing artificial intelligence and voluntary genetic input to predict risk.

Coordinated Care for All would combine technology, artificial intelligence and genetics to identify and target the following:

  • Prediction of risk: Predicts risk based on genetic predisposition (voluntarily submitted), family history and current medical status
  • Education: Provides education to the patient on how to prevent development or deterioration of a particular condition
  • Prevention: Emphasizes the importance of preventing disease through moderation in diet and exercise
  • Efficiency: Consolidation of medical records (though privacy must be maintained), Telemedicine (to improve access to care), Implementing medical case management (which is voluntary and based on patient consent) will expedite a patient’s recovery process
  • Cost Containment: Pharmaceutical legislation (as with substance abuse and large increases in the prices of medication), Improved standardization of hospital/surgery center billing practices, Efficiency lowers costs

According to Roberts, while all of this can be applied to a model for a single-payer source (Universal Healthcare), the same ideas can also be also applied to the private sector. Additionally, the allowance of pre-existing conditions and competition within the private healthcare sector are inclusive in the plan.

To promote his plan, Roberts has taken big steps. Originally, he tried working with lawmakers, but when that process resulted in slow results, he decided to invest more than $250,000 into the production of a feature-length documentary film called “Diagnosing Healthcare,” which is set to be released this spring.

Since beginning his push, Roberts has been gaining momentum. The Case Management Society of America published an article focusing on his plan in their latest issue of their flagship magazine, CMSA Today. Additionally, Roberts was recently interviewed about Coordinated Care for All on American Medicine Today, and next month Roberts is scheduled to speak at the Synapse Innovation Summit at Amalie Arena in Tampa Feb 11-12.

“I realized that in order to be taken seriously, I needed to take my plan directly to the American public, so that’s what I am doing,” said Roberts. “At the end of the day, the focus of my plan is on improving cost-effectiveness, while also improving the quality of care delivered.”

Accumen’s 3DR Labs Partners with Resonance Health to Expand its MRI Analysis Services

“We are excited to partner with Resonance Health to provide our clients with this additional resource for mining valuable diagnostic data from their MRI images,”

Accumen Inc., the leader in healthcare performance, announced today that its 3DR Labs, LLC company is partnering with Resonance Health Limited (ASX: RHT) to provide FerriSmart magnetic resonance imaging- (MRI-) based liver iron concentration reports for its clients.

FerriSmart uses artificial intelligence (AI) to analyze MRI images and deliver a liver iron quantification result within seconds. This technology allows liver iron concentrations to be monitored effectively and efficiently for individuals with confirmed or suspected systemic iron overload, patients with thalassemia or sickle cell anemia who require regular blood transfusions, and recipients of artificial heart valves who may experience an increase in systemic iron levels over time.

“We are excited to partner with Resonance Health to provide our clients with this additional resource for mining valuable diagnostic data from their MRI images,” said Accumen President and CEO Jeff Osborne. “3DR is already working with 900 hospitals in the United States, creating three-dimensional images from their MRI and computed tomography scans. We consider FerriSmart Reports to be a natural extension to the comprehensive MRI analysis services that we already offer to our 3DR clients.”

“We are delighted to partner with 3DR Laboratories and significantly increase the number of patients who can benefit from our non-invasive, MRI-based FerriSmart technology. This important liver iron concentration information can provide invaluable insights and help to guide their treatment options,” said Resonance Health CEO Alison Laws.

“Iron deposition disorders, such as sickle cell disease and thalassemia, are a significant health problem not only in the U.S. but worldwide. 3DR is thrilled to partner with Resonance Health in delivering a safer, easier and less expensive AI-based technology to help care for these patients,” said 3DR Labs Chief Medical Officer Robert L Falk, MD.

Sickle cell disease is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders, characterized by hard, sticky, c-shaped red blood cells. These red blood cells die early, so they are always in short supply. They also tend to cause blood clots, which can result in pain, infection, acute chest syndrome and stroke.1 The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that sickle cell disease affects approximately 100,000 Americans and millions of people throughout the world.2

Thalassemia is a group of inherited disorders in which there is reduced hemoglobin levels, decreased red blood cell production and anemia.3 They are sub-divided into alpha-thalassemia and beta-thalassemia depending on whether the mutation occurs on the alpha or beta chain of the hemoglobin molecule.4 The incidence of symptomatic cases of beta thalassemia is estimated to be approximately 1 in 100,000 individuals worldwide.3

Resonance Health has received 510(k) clearance for FerriSmart from the US Food and Drug Administration, a CE mark from the European Medicines Agency, and regulatory clearance from the Therapeutic Goods Administration in Australia.

About the Physician of Excellence Program

The Orange County Medical Association (OCMA) Board, when venturing into the Physicians of Excellence (POE) program, recognized the fact that all physicians meet a standard of excellence simply by the fact that they have completed the training and education necessary to become medical doctors. However, there are some who go above and beyond in serving their profession and patients, and as a result, the OCMA Board believed that by creating the POE program it would be able to recognize and honor those physicians.

Now in its fifteenth year, the POE program has become recognized as a fair and unbiased selection process identifying those physicians in the community who have exhibited the skills, training and commitment to their patients and the community to stand out above their peers as physicians of excellence. While the program certainly doesn’t honor all those in the county who would rightfully qualify, OCMA believes the program does an excellent job of selecting the utmost deserving on a year-to-year basis.

Plus, because the CEREC process is fully digital, there is no need for bulky impression trays or messy impression material. This means patients do not suffer from gag reflex or jaw aches in preparation for their dental crowns.

With CEREC, Dr. HagShenas simply scans a patient’s teeth using an intraoral camera. From the images he captures, a dental crown is digitally designed entirely on a computer. The crown is manufactured via the CEREC dental milling machine at the dentist’s office in under an hour and the patient is fitted with their new tooth in the same visit. CEREC technology creates extremely personalized and well-fitting restorations. Once Dr. HagShenas places the crown, if properly maintained through regular dental visits, it can last over a decade.

Although many fear that it is painful to have a crown put on a tooth, patients at Silicon Valley Smile Solutions boast about the comfort and kindness Dr. HagShenas displays at every visit. For those nervous about going to the dentist, he offers sedation dentistry to ease any treatment. “I’m very scared of pain,” Serena, a patient of Dr. HagShenas, explains while recalling her dental crown treatment with sedation dentistry. “Dr. HagShenas put me under, which was fantastic. I was out for most of the treatment, and I had no pain afterward.”

Dr. HagShenas prides himself on keeping the most advanced technology in his office. In addition to CEREC, Dr. HagShenas has invested in a full mouth cone beam CT scanner, BIOLASE® laser dentistry, the latest intra-oral scanning and digital technology, as well state-of-the-art HD intraoral cameras. This technology allows Dr. HagShenas to provide patients with the highest level of care and most accurate results, whether he’s placing dental crowns or full arch dental implants.

About VirTrial

VirTrial is a telemedicine company providing a stable, long-standing virtual care management (VCM) platform to transform the clinical trial industry. The platform combines video, text, and email allowing pharmaceutical companies and CROs to create patient centric Decentralized Clinical Trials (DCTs) by replacing some study visits with virtual visits.
