Northwest Vista College in San Antonio Takes the Lead in Saving Lives

NVC President Dr. Ric Baser Giving O-Negative Blood

“We want to be a resource for students. It’s important not just to come to campus and ask for blood. If you are putting blood on our shelves, we want to put food on the shelves of your food pantries,” said Vanessa Gonzales, a donor recruitment consultant with the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center.

In honor of National Donor Day Feb. 14, Northwest Vista College not only educates students, but also saves lives in San Antonio.

Since 2016, through blood drives on campus, 3,775 donors helped to save 11,325 lives, according to the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center.

In 2019, NVC had its biggest year and 1,288 students, employees and faculty donated blood – a 31% increase from the previous year. From 2016 to 2019, the five campuses that make up Alamo Colleges had 7,269 donors give blood, which resulted in saving over 21,000 lives. During a typical semester, there are several blood drives at each of the campuses – Northwest Vista College, San Antonio College, St. Philip’s College, Palo Alto College and Northeast Lakeview.

But there are more lives to be saved. And now is an even more critical time. To start off the year, the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center experienced a shortage. Typically during the holidays, donations decline and many college campuses are closed. Students are a big supplier of blood. Several local hospitals had trauma cases recently that used dozens of units of blood, wiping out inventories.

Approximately 60% of the population is eligible to give blood at any one time, but less than 5% of those who are eligible actually make a donation. While all blood types are needed, the demand is especially high for type O-negative donors. O-negative donors make up just 7% of the population, but because O-negative blood can be used for any patient in an emergency, 12% of the orders from South Texas hospitals are O negative.

To encourage more students to donate, NVC and its sister colleges are taking on a new challenge. Each campus has a goal to snag about 10% of its daytime enrollment. In return, the South Texas Blood and Tissue Center will match the amount of blood given for food or supplies for each campus’ food pantry. In the last few years, food pantries were started at Northwest Vista College, San Antonio College, St. Philip’s College, Palo Alto College and Northeast Lakeview to respond to the rising need of students not able to eat on a daily basis.

“We want to be a resource for students. It’s important not just to come to campus and ask for blood. If you are putting blood on our shelves, we want to put food on the shelves of your food pantries,” said Vanessa Gonzales, a donor recruitment consultant with the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center.

UN Foundation Shot@Life Campaign’s Statement on President’s FY21 Budget

While we remain grateful for the Administration’s commitment to Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, we are concerned that deep cuts to overall global health programs will restrict the impact of the Gavi investment and undermine the global immunization work of our UN partners.

President Trump recently released his budget for fiscal year 2021. For the fourth consecutive year, his budget proposes substantial, damaging cuts to foreign affairs, global health, and global child vaccine programs. Overall, the budget calls for a 22% cut to development and diplomacy, slashes USAID global health programs by $3.1B, and significantly reduces funding for the global child immunization programs Shot@Life supports.

Specifically, the budget would:

  • Slash funding for global polio and measles programs at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), by $11M and $9M, respectively.
  • Significantly decrease global polio funding for the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID).
  • Eliminate funding for UNICEF, the United Nations’ agency responsible for protecting the health and wellbeing of tens of millions of children, the majority of whom live in the most fragile places around the world.
  • Dramatically restrict funding for other multilateral programs at the World Health Organization (WHO).

That said, one aspect of the budget related to child immunization deserves strong praise. Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, will begin its next 5-year strategic cycle in 2021 and is seeking at least $7.4 billion from global donors to realize its ambitious goal of immunizing an additional 300 million children between 2021-2025. This achievement would bring the total number of children Gavi has helped immunize to 1.1 billion since its launch in 2000.

Shot@Life commends the Administration for proposing full funding for Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, at $290M for FY2021. We also applaud the Administration for committing the government to a multi-year pledge at that funding level, which will support Gavi with $290M through FY2023. This is a welcome announcement and Shot@Life would like to thank Administrator Mark Green, head of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), for supporting a multi-year pledge that will save children’s lives while leveraging support from other government, civil society, and private sector donors. During the strategic period, recipient countries will also contribute at least $3.6B in co-financing and self-funded vaccine programs.

On February 25, 120 Shot@Life advocates from across the country will come to Washington, D.C. for our 2020 Champion Summit to ask their members of Congress to fully fund global child immunization programs. While we remain grateful for the Administration’s commitment to Gavi, we are concerned that deep cuts to overall global health programs will restrict the impact of the Gavi investment and undermine the global immunization work of our UN partners. All bilateral and multilateral global health programs must be fully funded so that we may halt outbreaks at their source, protect Americans at home and abroad, and save millions of children from preventable illness.

AMSYS Group Announces Acquisition of HealthConnexx

AMSYS Group, a 17-year old Houston based company, announced the acquisition of Virginia based HealthConnexx, a healthcare technology company that connects providers, patients, payers, pharmacies, and pharmaceutical companies to prescription medication information to enable better clinical outcomes through real-time data. The HealthConnexx RxConnexx platform is the first-to-market real-time patient data exchange platform for medication and benefits data, an essential component of value-based care and a critical on-ramp for the emergence of precision medicine.  The RxConnexx platform provides access to 80% of the US population and 93% of insured patients and delivers the data to stakeholders in a secure and standardized format that can be consumed easily and efficiently.

The Annals of Pharmacotherapy reports that the estimated annual cost of drug-related morbidity and mortality resulting from non-optimized medication therapy was $528.4 billion, equivalent to 16% of total US health care expenditures. This enormous annual cost is due to over prescribing, prescribing drugs that conflict with the efficacy of other drugs, not using generic alternatives, lack of medication adherence, and other market factors. But the cost of drug market inefficiency is also a personal one:  the Kaiser Family Foundation indicated that among those currently taking prescription drugs, 24% of adults and 23% of seniors say it’s difficult to afford their prescriptions, and 10% indicated it was “very difficult.”

Moreover, this inefficiency is caused by the inability of providers to access timely, accurate and complete medication information.  “Given our fractured healthcare system, this creates frustration and is next to impossible for many providers to control today. HealthConnexx alone has access to a real-time data-as-a-service platform with meaningful insights, and that’s why our solution is unique,” said M. Todd Hardman, founder and CEO of HealthConnexx.  “Workflow doesn’t save lives, actionable information does. The RxConnexx platform provides the industry with a trusted, use case specific data exchange service for real-time access to medication history and adherence information that’s essential to lower costs and enable desired outcomes in the emerging value-based care system,” he added.

RxConnexx is available as a data-as-a-subscription model (DaaS) for health plans, managed care organizations, medication therapy management (MTM) programs, HUB Services companies, hospitals and health systems, all of which uniquely benefit from data provided by retail pharmacies, payers, and PBMs.  One of the core benefits of RxConnexx is its real-time prescription benefits system that provides eligibility, formulary status, member pricing, and coverage alerts, and can suggest alternative, possibly lower-priced options with the same therapeutic benefits.  Thru our integrated ePrescribing platform, these capabilities dramatically reduce the traditional friction associated with the prescribing of specialty or high cost medications.

“Prescription price transparency is critical to preventing ‘sticker shock’ at the pharmacy. RxConnexx has access to over 270 million covered lives and all major pharmacy networks, which can positively impact medication adherence and patient safety,” Hardman added. “Care providers are swimming in data, yet starving for actionable information, and we can feed that need,” he added.

The acquisition of HealthConnexx bolsters the AMSYS Group’s offerings in the healthcare technology marketplace.  AMSYS’s Transwise division provides transcription services, insurance verification, IT services, and medical billing and coding to healthcare providers. The group’s AmChart division uses blockchain technology in the clinical data management space and maintains a secure database of 20 million patients globally.

“AMSYS’s pioneering work in healthcare technology and information management, including blockchain and AI, was the initial impetus in wanting to know them better. During our conversations, we both quickly realized that our cultures and devotion to reducing healthcare costs and improving outcomes were missions that we could better achieve together,” said Hardman, who has spent his career in healthcare, including posts at Johnson & Johnson and Surescripts.

“There are significant opportunities for improvements that we are now better positioned to address. We are excited to have the strength and experience of AMSYS Group as a catalyst in our mission,” Hardman added.

“Our strategy is to find and acquire synergistic companies into our healthcare portfolio to solve issues across the industry spectrum,” said AMSYS Group CEO Ken (Khalid) Parekh. “Todd and his team have demonstrated their ability and desire to remove market frictions that are the underlying cause of healthcare inefficiency and burgeoning costs.  We share that vision and are excited to provide significant value to all the major players in the US healthcare ecosystem,” he added.

Local virtual reality company and Magnolia Bakery team up to bring sweet Valentine’s Day surprise to seniors

“Collaborating with Magnolia Bakery to deliver this special custom video is sweet, and seeing the residents at Stone Hill marvel at Sarah’s baking and enjoy the cupcakes first-hand is the best Valentine’s Day gift we could imagine.” – Kyle Rand, Cofounder and CEO of Rendever

Rendever, a virtual reality company focused on reducing social isolation and depression amongst the senior population, teamed up with Magnolia Bakery to bring an unforgettable Valentine’s Day experience to the Stone Hill at Andover assisted living community.

For some seniors, visiting their favorite bakery or even baking their favorite Valentine’s Day treats may no longer be an option, but this year it became a virtual reality for the residents at Rendever’s 125+ senior living clients across North America. Thousands of seniors now have access to a behind-the-scenes tour of Faneuil Hall’s bustling Magnolia Bakery store and kitchen, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Magnolia Bakery’s General Manager, Sarah Wallace, widely known for her recent appearance on Food Network’s Holiday Baking Championship, also showed step-by-step instructions for their famous vanilla cupcake recipe – complete with a gourmet buttercream rose decoration on top. Not only did seniors at Stone Hill at Andover get to partake in the 360° experience of Magnolia Bakery, they also got to enjoy the cupcakes and meet Sarah in person for an extra sweet VR session.

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring this unique Valentine’s Day VR experience to our clients,” said Kyle Rand, co-founder and CEO of Rendever. “It’s exciting every time we produce and share something new, but this partnership with Magnolia Bakery is especially meaningful. They have built such a warm and inviting brand, so it was no surprise that working together has been fantastic. Collaborating to deliver this special custom video is sweet, and seeing the residents at Stone Hill marvel at Sarah’s baking and enjoy the cupcakes first-hand is the best Valentine’s Day gift we could imagine.”

“I’ve always been a huge fan of the impressive work that Rendever is doing to improve the lives of seniors,” said Sarah Wallace, General Manager of Magnolia Bakery in Boston. “Being able to share my love of baking with these residents and seeing their faces light up throughout the afternoon was an incredibly rewarding experience.”

Rendever cofounder, Kyle Rand, and Magnolia Bakery’s Sarah Wallace are both Rochester, NY natives pursuing their passions in Boston. When Kyle approached Sarah about bringing the Magnolia Bakery experience to seniors during a holiday that celebrates love and connection, she was immediately all in. In just four days, Rendever filmed, edited and uploaded the video experience to the Rendever VR platform to be used in time for Valentine’s Day.

This was the first time a professional baking experience was available on the platform. Other experiences include checking off bucket list items like visiting the Eiffel Tower or revisiting meaningful places like a childhood home.
