‘Best in Wellness’ senior living communities win ICAA NuStep Beacon Award

ICAA NuStep Beacon "Best in Wellness" Award

ICAA NuStep Beacon “Best in Wellness” Award

“It is a pleasure to honor the top 25 wellness communities,” says Jane Benskey, marketing communications specialist at NuStep. “Their recognition of the value and importance of creating cultures where wellness is not a program in a room, but rather a way of life.

COVID-19’s emergence in 2020 upended daily life in senior living communities across North America and made it more vital than ever to nurture wellness for residents and staff. Many communities have embraced wellness as a culture shift in the last decade, prioritizing wellness—and its pursuit—as an essential way of life. Today, the International Council on Active Aging® (ICAA) and NuStep, LLC, honor 25 communities and recognize their “Best in Wellness” achievements with the 2020 ICAA NuStep Beacon Award.

ICAA, a professional association that leads, connects and defines the active-aging industry, supports organizations and professionals that develop wellness environments and services for adults over 50. NuStep is a leading manufacturer of recumbent cross-trainers used in healthcare, senior living and fitness settings worldwide. The longtime champions of active aging and wellness launched their joint annual awards program in 2019 to spotlight “Best in Wellness” achievements in North America’s senior living communities. A culture of wellness permeates community life, supporting residents and staff in engaging as fully as possible in all of life’s dimensions. The award is presented to communities that successfully foster a wellness culture and an environment that supports wellness for all who live and work there.

ICAA defines wellness as “derived from our ability to understand, accept and act upon our capacity to lead a purpose-filled and engaged life.” When we do, “we can embrace our potential…to pursue and optimize possibilities” in life’s key dimensions: emotional, physical, intellectual, social, spiritual, vocational and environmental. These dimensions improve quality of life when they are nurtured and prioritized as a whole.

“It is a pleasure to honor the top 25 wellness communities,” says Jane Benskey, marketing communications specialist at NuStep. “Their recognition of the value and importance of creating cultures where wellness is not a program in a room, but rather a way of life, is having a lasting and positive impact on many lives.” Adds Benskey, “The momentum toward wellness was influenced by innovative leaders, thinkers and doers. The Beacon Award will recognize those who continue to lead the way.”

ICAA’s CEO and Founder Colin Milner notes, “By identifying winning communities as leaders in creating cultures of wellness, the Beacon Award provides a powerful tool for recruiting staff, attracting new investors or adding extra prestige to marketing materials. Each recipient receives a crystal award trophy to display—a symbol of excellence to inspire residents and staff daily.”

Pat Tillman Foundation Opens Registration For 17th Annual Pat’s Run, Presented By TEKsystems

Registration opened for the 2021 Pat's Run

17th Annual Pat’s Run

“While we can’t come together to take to the streets of Tempe this April, we’re still one community focused on one mission: uniting and empowering remarkable service members, veterans and military spouses to carry on Pat Tillman’s legacy,” said Dan Futrell, CEO and 2011 Tillman Scholar.

Registration opened for Pat’s Run, the Pat Tillman Foundation’s marquee fundraising event, presented by TEKsystems. Pat’s Run, a 4.2 mile run / walk with a .42 mile Kids Run, will take place virtually on April 24, 2021.

In partnership with the City of Tempe, Arizona State University and TEKsystems, the Pat Tillman Foundation made a joint decision to hold Pat’s Run virtually in 2021 to prioritize the health and safety of our runners, our volunteers and the community.

“You can share Pat’s values and help support our nearly 700 Tillman Scholars by not just walking and running in your community, but asking your friends and neighbors to join you, no matter where they live.”

Registration costs $42 for the 4.2 mile walk / run. Funds raised benefit the Pat Tillman Foundation and the Tillman Scholars program. Arizona State University alumni can also register for socially distanced Tillman Honor Runs in 13 cities across the country.

All adult registrants for the 4.2 mile walk / run will receive a medal and a sport-tech race tee featuring the 2021 theme, “Give ‘Em Hell,” a line from the ASU fight song that Pat famously uttered to his teammates before beating defending national champions Nebraska 19-0 in 1996. Kids’ race participants will receive a special kids sport-tech shirt and a ribbon.

Registrants can also sign up for special bundles for our new Pat’s Run Challenge Series, including a virtual 10K in August and the Pat’s Run 42 in 40 Challenge, in which participants hike, run or walk 42 miles in the 40 days before Veterans Day. Registrants for each event will receive a t-shirt and medal and those who complete all three will receive a special item.

To learn more and register, please visit http://www.patsrun.org. If you are a member of the media who wishes to arrange an interview with Marie Tillman or Dan Futrell regarding Pat’s Run, please contact Stephanie Kuenn at (773) 495-8278 or skuenn@pattillmanfoundation.org.

How Older Adults Can Remain Physically Active Despite Cold Weather

News Image

Many people have found innovative ways to stay active in their home during the pandemic. Similarly, older adults can be creative when choosing activities to keep them moving while staying in.

As temperatures drop, and snow and ice begin to appear across much of the U.S., many of us will be spending the next few months inside. While passing time relaxing on the couch is preferred by many, it is especially important that older adults remain active during the winter season.

According to the CDC, physical activity can help manage, delay or even prevent many chronic diseases prevalent among adults over age 50. As older adults avoid frigid temperatures and icy conditions, it is crucial to find creative ways to exercise and stay moving while remaining safe and warm indoors.

“While the combination of COVID-19 restrictions and winter weather will make it difficult for older adults to exercise outdoors, staying active is still an incredibly important part of safeguarding overall health for the aging population,” said Lakelyn Hogan, Ph.D., gerontologist and caregiver advocate at Home Instead. “Even though going on a walk or stretching outside may be out of the question for some until spring, there are several other options to get your recommended daily dose of physical activity this season.”

Many people have found innovative ways to stay active in their home during the pandemic. Similarly, older adults can be creative when choosing activities to keep them moving while staying in. Here are a few recommendations for activities and exercises to implement into your schedule this winter:

  • Choose low impact activities. Don’t underestimate the countless health benefits associated with walking. Walk around your home, do light housework and chores for cardio exercise. If able, and while taking the proper precautions, for an additional challenge, walk up and down the stairs for a quick and effective workout.
  • Recreational activities. Recent research from AARP shows that 44% of adults 50 and older enjoy playing video games at least once a month. And gaming systems like Wii, Nintendo Switch and Xbox are great for older adults who wish to exercise indoors. You can even interact with other players virtually, which can be an opportunity to connect with children or grandchildren. GrandPad is another great device option to keep in mind, designed specifically for seniors. For those without equipment or consoles, access YouTube on your smart TV and turn on your favorite artist and do some light dancing or find an age appropriate yoga tutorial.
  • Fitness apps. There are more options than ever before to help maintain your physical health, even from the comfort of your own home. No matter your fitness level or what exercises you find enjoyable, there is an app for you. Consider trying a few options to find the best fit for you and your needs.
  • Bring the gym home. Investing in home equipment is a great and easy way to incorporate cardio and strength into your daily routine. Even light weight dumbbells can help build muscle. And there are many low-cost strength training equipment options available, such as resistance bands. Similarly, ellipticals and stationary bikes can improve cardiovascular health.
  • Attend virtual group classes or activities. For those missing exercising with others, there are several virtual workout classes available online, which you can also stream through your smart TV. These interactive sessions offer something for everyone. Take advantage of classes like the YMCA’s Active Older Adult s or Silver&Fit.

Exercise is beneficial for the mind, body and soul. While COVID-19 restrictions and winter weather will make it difficult for older adults to exercise outside their homes, staying active is still an incredibly important part of safeguarding overall health.

News Image

The miniTREAD is designed to help people of any fitness level, as nearly all Americans sit too much.

Onthemuv®, the company behind the patented miniTREAD ®, knows exercise is necessary; however, our busy lives sometimes keep us from attaining our goals. Enter the miniTREAD. Used while seated, the miniTREAD weighs a mere 23 lbs and fits under any desk. It can be used at any time, thus alleviating the need to “find time” to exercise. When used during the workday, it enhances productivity, engages our muscular system, and keeps us from sitting in one position for too long. Exercising while working, watching television, or simply sitting and relaxing means anyone can multitask efficiently, while getting the benefits of exercise at the same time.

The patented miniTREAD® is a compact and ergonomically-designed cardio device that engages the quads, core, hamstrings and calves. Geared for all fitness levels, this motorized device counteracts the impact of extensive sitting allowing millions of Americans of all mobility levels to get fit from the safety and comfort of their own home.

“The miniTREAD is designed to help people of any fitness level, as nearly all Americans sit too much,” said Hillary New Sinclair, CMO of Onthemuv. “From a marketing perspective, we are looking to interact with busy people who want fitness to naturally merge into their daily lives as they work, read, spend time with family and watch TV. The contest entry types help us better understand our core audience and what’s most important to them about fitness and their lifestyles. Early responses include people sharing that the miniTREAD is easy to set up and use, can help them combat balance issues, be gentler on their joints and more.”

This past year has made fitness and movement more of an acute issue that affects everyone. “The combination of COVID-19 social distancing, gym closures, and binge watching – coupled with the annual weight gain from the holiday season has seriously impacted our health,” Onthemuv.com Co-Founder Patrick Netter. “We sit more than ever which makes fitness harder to achieve. We have less time with virtual school, telecommuting, and the rigors of being home so much. In short, 2020 was such a rough year, so as a company we are starting 2021 with a focus on fitness at home. Whether seated or standing, registrants are encouraged to show their individualism through creative expression or just having fun, while knowing they are on the road to improving their health in the process.”

Today, the company is announcing their “Goodbye 2020, Hello 2021” Sweepstakes. From now through January 17, 2021, two lucky winners will each be able to win a motorized miniTREAD® which enables them to walk while seated, showing off their Goodbye 2020, Hello 2021 MUVes!

Created to coincide with the New Year’s Resolutions that include getting fit and less inactive sitting, the goal of the Hello 2021 MUVes Sweepstakes is to encourage more movement in registrants’ daily lives and to learn more about how the miniTREAD can help with fitness goals. Two lucky winners will be drawn from all registrants, and each Winner will receive a miniTREAD®. The first drawing will take place in early January, with the second drawing will taking place on Monday, January 18, 2021.

The contest is easy to enter and any adult in the U.S. can enter by simply providing their email address. Each Registrant may have over two hundred additional entries in eight (8) different ways. Registrants can get additional entries by:
