Think tank advises on ways to fund the wellness business model in senior living

ICAA Forum Report

ICAA Forum Report on “Funding the new Wellness Model in Senior Living.”

Innovative senior living organizations are repositioning for today’s cultural and economic realities with a new business model: senior living based in a wellness lifestyle, with options for care.

Innovative senior living organizations are repositioning for today’s cultural and economic realities with a new business model: senior living based in a wellness lifestyle, with options for care.

To build the economic foundation of the model, thought leaders convened at the ICAA Forum June 2022, hosted by the International Council on Active Aging®. Based in the wellness philosophy of a purposeful and engaged life for all residents, customers and staff members, Forum colleagues identified 11 funding sources, 21 wellness metrics and five categories of Key Performance Indicators.

“Integrating the wellness philosophy across all departments and services is an investment that brings in new revenue and reallocates current funding,” said Colin Milner, CEO of International Council on Active Aging (ICAA). “It is a catalyst for the longtime goal of crossing departmental silos, and generates a return on health, well-being and satisfaction that results in cost savings, move-ins and new revenue opportunities.”

Wellness drives direct and indirect revenue

The wellness philosophy merges clinical and nonclinical services into a compelling suite of services that is attractive, saves money and staff labor, and opens the door to new revenue sources. Underlying the wellness lifestyle is a range of preventive services along with care.

There are multiple reasons why wellness brings value to the business of senior living:

  • Wellness increases length of stay, stabilizing occupancy, increasing revenue
  • Wellness increases resident independence, reducing staff time and effort
  • Wellness encourages residents/visitors to plan, lead and guide activities, which frees staff time to build partnerships and collaborations
  • Wellness reduces resident need for care, opening beds for hospital and physician short-term stay referrals
  • Wellness focuses on prevention, which opens the door to partnership with Medicare Advantage programs and other prevention-focused programs
  • Wellness creates the environment that brings private-pay nonresidents to programs, dining and health screenings
  • Wellness improves the staff experience; happy, satisfied staff lead to happy, satisfied residents and clients

Wellness outcomes justify investment

Metrics gathered from the nonclinical services, such as resident engagement in lifelong learning, volunteering, physical activity, healthy eating and social interaction connect to research-based associations with improved clinical indicators and functional outcomes. The wellness lifestyle may also be a solution to attracting and satisfying the middle-income market, which could stabilize occupancy over the long-term.

“In terms of the business objectives,” says Milner at ICAA, “length of stay is a Key Performance Indicator (KPI) of great value to senior living. So is resident satisfaction, willingness to refer and a community that attracts people who desire the wellness lifestyle, even when they need care services. Wellness contributes to all of these, as shown in the findings from the ICAA/ProMatura Wellness Benchmarks for Senior Living.”

The ICAA Forum, sponsored by Humana, Keiser, Matrix, SMARTfit, SportsArt and Accushield (the official health and safety partner), opened with an expert panel featuring Beth Burnham Mace, chief economist and director of research and analytics at the National Investment Center for Seniors Housing & Care (NIC), Sean Kelly, president and CEO at The Kendal Corporation, Nora Super, executive director at the Milken Institute Center for the Future of Aging and Nicole Lowery, director, population health strategy at Humana.

Colleagues developing strategies at the ICAA Forum included executives and managers from CCRC/life plan communities, independent living and assisted living properties, memory care and nursing locations, affordable housing and home care services.

Glenda Crumbley’s newly released “From Chronic Pain to Purposeful Living” is an encouraging memoir that finds a determined woman beating the odds

News Image

“From Chronic Pain to Purposeful Living”: a helpful message of hope for those fighting against illness. “From Chronic Pain to Purposeful Living” is the creation of published author Glenda Crumbley, a dedicated mother of four and grandmother of seven who holds a master’s degree in public health.

Crumbley shares, “This book details the struggles of a woman who ultimately defied incurability and the medically unknown for the most part. After being diagnosed with Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) in 1999, Glenda fought to overcome bedridden and regain her place in society. Despite the nature of the incurable disease, Glenda realized without medical provision, she was in for a battle that could ultimately mean doom. In 2004 she began her journey by combing home remedies, trial and error, and prayer.

“However, instead of continually bowing to debilitating symptoms, Glenda had to exchange blows ‘the beast verses the remedy.’ Over time, she regained her sense of freedom. Glenda found that homeopathic remedies were the ‘life changers,’ so she has embarked on a mission to educate and encourage others to utilize health solutions that promotes quality of life.”

Published by Christian Faith Publishing, Glenda Crumbley’s new book will resonate with many who have found themselves trapped by an illness or injury.

Crumbley shares in hopes of helping others on their healing journey and to spread awareness of the potential within homeopathic remedies.

Consumers can purchase “From Chronic Pain to Purposeful Living” at traditional brick & mortar bookstores, or online at Amazon.com, Apple iTunes store, or Barnes and Noble.

Ohm Fitness Plans for 35 Locations in Arizona Over 3 Years

Ohm Fitness Founder Doug Payne and Area Developers Alexis Krisay and Melissa DiGianfilippo

Ohm Fitness the nation’s first fitness franchise to use EMS (electro muscle stimulation) technology wirelessly and in a small group setting, announced today that two seasoned entrepreneurs and marketing executives have purchased the area developer rights to Arizona and are actively selling franchise licenses to open up to 35 locations across the state over the next three years.

Ohm Fitness offers a high-tech EMS fitness experience that packs the benefits of an intense two-hour workout into a low-impact, 25-minute session. The first corporate location opened in Scottsdale at 15029 N. Thompson Peak Parkway in June and already has exceeded initial projections for a member base in such a short period of time.

Alexis Krisay and Melissa DiGianfilippo, founders of Serendipit Consulting, one of the Valley’s top marketing and PR agencies, will now serve as Ohm Fitness Arizona Area Developers and plan to open at least three locations themselves. Serendipit was contracted in 2021 as the agency of record for Ohm Fitness due to the agency’s proven track record in the franchising space. Serendipit is well-known for supporting franchises like Orangetheory Fitness, Modern Acupuncture and Perspire Sauna Studios to name a few.

“While marketing and PR is our true passion and calling, we have always been obsessed with health and wellness and we have learned the ins and outs of franchising over the years by supporting some of the country’s top brands,” said Krisay. “It was obvious to us from early on that Ohm Fitness was going to be the next big thing and we knew we had to be a part of it.”

The duo plans to run their Ohm Fitness business alongside Serendipit Consulting and plans to hire a team to manage the operations of their Ohm Fitness studios and oversee the success of the Arizona region as they bring on more franchisees. They are already searching for real estate for their first locations.

“Every person we’ve introduced to the concept is immediately blown away, and that has led to some very early franchise interest,” said DiGianfilippo. “We are already in the process of vetting qualified franchisees to purchase territories throughout Arizona. We are looking for individuals who have a passion for fitness and preferably have franchise experience.”

Created by several veteran franchisors who built and grew Massage Envy, European Wax Center, and Orangetheory Fitness, Ohm Fitness is the first franchise to deliver small group workouts using the highly-effective electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) through the use of wearable technology called the EMPower Suit. This technology has the ability to produce impressive results with a desirably low rate of wear and tear on the joints, ligaments, and muscles, in comparison to traditional weights and other 2-3 hour conventional workout activities.

At Ohm Fitness, guests are immersed in a high-tech fitness experience with every visit. From the wearable technology to the biometrics that is collected and reported on, to the design of the studio and the music and lighting sequences that are tied to the story of the workout, the Ohm Fitness workout is unlike anything else in the fitness industry. Founding memberships include the “Warm Up” (four classes) for $90 per month, the “Turn Up” (12 classes) for $250 per month, and the “Peak” (20 classes) for $360 per month. Group and private sessions are also available and prices range depending on the number of sessions purchased.

This low-impact workout has been connected to researched-based benefits such as fat loss, skin health, energy, stress and anxiety levels, muscle strength, and acute and chronic pain. While the body’s central nervous system can only send frequency impulses that control 30% of your muscle fibers during an exercise, the EMS technology within the wireless EMPower Suit is able to send impulses to muscle fibers up to one hundred times faster, causing muscles to feel fatigued faster than a traditional weight training exercise, which is how it shrinks a two or three hour workout into just 25 minutes.

Arizona is the first area development license to be awarded and the company has enormous interest from qualified franchisees across the country. Ohm Fitness is well-positioned for rapid growth and financial success with its highly regarded founding and management team, including Co-Founder Doug Payne, Co-Founder Eric Hamann, Director of Ohmgevity Jason Sani and Director of Franchise Development Hogan Zinn, who collectively boast more than 55 years of franchise and health and wellness experience.

Ohm Fitness is a special first-to-market franchise opportunity for entrepreneurs and experienced franchise industry professionals who are eager to capture their share in the $96 billion dollar fitness industry. The initial franchise fee is $39,000 and the total estimated initial investment ranges from $107,150 to $328,000. Feed.fm Study Reveals that Curated Music Increases Customer Retention and Session Times for Digital Fitness Apps

“We all know intuitively that workouts are more fun when accompanied by a great soundtrack, but it’s revealing to see just how dramatic the impact of music is on building a profitable digital fitness business,” said Feed.fm COO Lauren Pufpaf.

Feed.fm, the leader in music services for the fitness industry, today announced the results of its study “The 2022 Mobile App Music Report,” which explored the connection between professionally curated music and its impact on fitness routines across digital fitness apps and connected devices. The data revealed that curated music increases session times and overall retention rates.

Researchers determined that music stations curated by Feed.fm resulted in 3X longer workout session times. In addition to driving an increased length of exercise sessions, music also played an important role in bringing people back more regularly to their fitness regimes. The study consistently found that professionally curated music brought people back to their exercise routines over a 90 day period almost twice as often as those who didn’t listen to in-app music programmed by Feed.fm.

“We all know intuitively that workouts are more fun when accompanied by a great soundtrack, but it’s revealing to see just how dramatic the impact of music is on building a profitable digital fitness business,” said Feed.fm COO Lauren Pufpaf. “Digital fitness companies who make bespoke music an integral part of their experience are going to see increased session times and retention and ultimately higher revenues.”

An overwhelming 93 percent of people say that music makes or breaks a workout and that the right song at the right time is key to improving one’s performance. What were the most popular songs in Feed’s deep dive into exercise data in the first half of 2022? Lil Nas X’s “MONTERO,” Ed Sheeran’s “Shivers,” and K-pop megastars BTS with “Butter,” were fan favorites, as were Olivia Rodrigo’s “good 4 you” and Doja Cat’s “Kiss Me More” (feat. SZA). Generally speaking, songs that were popular, upbeat with strong melodies made the cut for fitness enthusiasts.

Muscle Loss In Seniors Due To Lifestyle Changes, Not Age Says Dr. John Jaquish

News Image

“Strength training is the best preventative and corrective method for age-related muscle loss. No matter your age, you can build and maintain muscle, and to optimally do so requires resistance training,” Dr. John Jaquish

An aging mother he dearly loved was the motivation that sent scientist, inventor, and author Dr. John Jaquish on his deep dive into exercise and fitness. His research revealed that muscle growth can take place for individuals of any age, including those over 60, using the correct strength training regimen and the right nutritional program. His research into optimal muscle-building further showed that the most productive strength training is accomplished by using variable resistance bands and not free weights. For seniors and others seeking the ultimate solution for effectively maximizing muscle and minimizing body fat, Dr.Jaquish details his complete resistance band protocol along with supporting science in his controversial Wall Street Journal bestselling book Weightlifting is a Waste of Time, So is Cardio.

The “2020 Profile of Older Americans” by the ACL (The Administration for Community Living) reports the number of Americans aged 60 and over is 74.6 million. As this population gets older their hormones change and protein is processed less efficiently. They also tend to move less, which leads to muscular atrophy. When strength is lost, gait and balance change — which can increase the risk for falls and subsequent injury.

“Contrary to what is widely believed, seniors don’t have to lose muscle as they age; they can still build muscle with strength training,” says Dr. Jaquish. “ Primarily, muscle declines with age because of changes to lifestyle, not biology. Remaining physically active, good nutrition, and the proper strength training program will protect against muscle loss.”

“Strength training is the best preventative and corrective method for age-related muscle loss. No matter your age, you can build and maintain muscle, and to optimally do so requires resistance training,” says Dr. Jaquish. “Unfortunately, resistance training methods typically recommended involve lifting free weights such as dumbbells and barbells, medicine balls, or using weight machines. These methods are not effective, nor are they safe for seniors or bodybuilders of any age.”

In his book, Dr. Jaquish explains how lifting weights puts pressure on joints and increases the risk of injury. Even for professional powerlifters, this risk increases significantly after the age of 40. For anyone with reduced balance and mobility, past joint injuries, arthritis, and loss of bone density, strength training by lifting heavy free weights is not recommended.

Dr. Jaquish says as a solution to these issues, trainers typically program lighter weights, less frequent workouts, or the use of strength training machines. However, these so-called solutions are counterproductive. Building muscle with resistance training requires heavy lifting, and perhaps even more so in a senior population.

“Training with variable resistance and resistance bands is the superior way. Variable resistance with the right bands and equipment has built-in protective qualities that make strength training for seniors less risky. By allowing seniors to safely lift heavy weight, variable resistance also addresses the hormonal environment that can prevent older adults from building muscle,” says Dr. Jaquish.

In his book, Dr. Jaquish explains that after approximately 40 years of age, serum levels of the hormones responsible for muscle growth begin to decline. By using variable resistance training, one is able to maintain a constant tension and recruit more muscle fiber during lifts, cueing the body to open receptors for the hormones that stimulate muscle growth.

“Variable resistance bands offer a sufficiently challenging level of resistance necessary for triggering the perfect hormonal environment, so seniors get the most out of each training session. This not only makes each lift safer but more effective,” says Dr. Jaquish.

It’s not a given that seniors lose muscle with age. By continuing to strength train, eating a high protein diet, and ensuring a steady intake of all essential amino acids, even older adults can experience a “youthful” anabolic response and grow muscle.

Fort Myers Brazilian Jiu Jitsu School Supports Law Enforcement

In its role as a community provider of hand-to-hand combat training steeped in discipline and respect, City of Palms Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is proud to announce it is the latest affiliate gym in the Adopt A Cop BJJ program. This move is in support of the program’s goal of “ultimately reduc[ing] the incidents of police-involved shootings and deaths” through advocating for law enforcement officers (LEOs).

The Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Advantage for Law Enforcement

The mission of Adopt A Cop BJJ (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu) is to address gaps in police training that often send front-line officers into volatile situations with minimal defense training outside of the Academy. These LEOs are first to interface with the public. They are tasked with assessing and, if necessary, deescalating situations that are in danger of becoming physical confrontations.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training produces skilled grapplers — and a LEO with BJJ-instilled discipline has the skill and confidence to swiftly bring a confrontation under control, making them less likely to resort to lethal force.

The program’s success relies on local BJJ gyms to provide services to their respective communities. City of Palms BJJ has stepped in to be the resource for LEOs in Fort Myers, Cape Coral, and throughout Lee County in Southwest Florida. As an affiliate gym, City of Palms BJJ promises to “Adopt a Cop,” allowing one officer to train for free until they reach Blue Belt status (which typically takes 12 to 18 months). Subsequent officers will be allowed to train for a reduced fee. Their training fees are subsidized by Adopt A Cop BJJ.

How the Public Can Help

While much of the discourse around policing, criminality, and violence focuses on systems rather than individuals, Adopt A Cop BJJ allows local businesses and residents to invest in their neighborhood LEOs and take a concrete step towards improving their communities. City of Palms BJJ is asking the public to consider making a donation via the program website at https://adoptacopbjj.org. Individual officers or City of Palms BJJ may be sponsored by name. Please include your intention to sponsor individuals or the gym in the comments when making a donation.

Renowned Cycling Coach Hunter Allen Launches Project FUERZA; Offers NFTs that Combine Pro’s Power, Other Data with Contemporary Art

Project FUERZA NFT by Jens Voigt

Jens Voigt’s FUERZA NFT tribute to his famous slogan “Shut Up Legs”

We’ve transformed a ton of my crazy power data into NFT art, collected from races like the Tour de France, Tour of California and even my last race ever, my Hour-Record attempt. The outcome is pretty spectacular and quite unique.

Long considered a guru in cycling circles, specifically for his pioneering work in training with power, Hunter Allen is now launching http://www.projectfuerza.com/Project FUERZA: The new NFT collection takes biometric data graphs from athletes at specific races, along with other inspirational materials, and employs world-renowned artists to create unique, authentic NFT artworks that tell a visual-numeric story of that particular race. Cyclists like Peter Sagan, Mark Cavendish, Geraint Thomas, Jens Voigt and many other top pros have already signed on, with many more in the works.

A former professional cyclist, Allen co-developed TrainingPeaks WKO software and led its desktop software team until 2015. He founded Peaks Coaching Group in 1996 and still owns it: Now with 35-plus coaches and 5 international affiliates, they work with cyclists and triathletes of all levels, conducting cycling camps and vacations, and offering 300 pre-built training plans, all based on power. Now, through Project FUERZA, he’s figured out a way to use all that science to create cycling-themed art.

Somewhere within each of the NFTs are numeric and/or graphic representations of the riders’ actual ‘fuerza’ – Spanish for power – output and other metrics recorded during the effort. Along with the NFT itself, all original NFTs will come with a license to view/use the actual data file (discounted additional copies may not), so buyers can deep dive into the numbers behind thrilling moments such as Cav’s victories on the Champs-Elysees or one of Voigt’s legendary breakaway wins, and compare to their own data, etc.

“I am happy and proud to be part of this project. Project FUERZA’s NFTs combine in a unique way the power data from cyclists like me with the artistic imaginations of some incredible artists,” says Voigt. “We’ve transformed a ton of my crazy power data into NFT art, collected from races like the Tour de France, Tour of California and even my last race ever, my Hour-Record attempt. The outcome is pretty spectacular and quite unique.”

Over 1000 FUERZA NFTs are already available for sale on the website, and more are coming in every week from an ever-growing list of artists and athletes across multiple cycling disciplines. The cost for each work is derived from the athlete, race, artist, etc, but they’re available across a huge spectrum of values from $100 to millions to attract every level of buyer from casual enthusiast to major collector.

Plus, for buyers who’d like an even more personal interaction with their athlete of choice, the higher-end NFTs will come with bonuses ranging from personal video calls to in-person rides with the athletes. For instance, an NFT selling for over $300,000 will come with the option to ride with the athlete on the actual route where the biometric data was created for their NFT (along with other bonuses; conditions apply). Alpe d’Huez with Geraint Thomas anyone?

FUERZA NFTs will be available for purchase on the OpenSea NFT marketplace, using your credit/debit card or Ethereum cryptocurrency. Founders are confident their NFTs should also prove excellent investments as their values grow along with cryptocurrency in general.

The idea for these NFTs came from Allen’s own artistic ideas for power data over his 20-plus years analyzing power data: “More than a few times, I have seen the data as art,” he says. “Finally, with blockchain technology, and our world class artists, we have been able to create these inspirational works of art. Hopefully buyers will enjoy their rider’s art on an LCD screen in their home, on a computer or phone screen, and gain motivation from the incredible physical power of the athletes and creative power of our artists.”

And for those curious to see their own data numbers as art, the next phase of development will allow consumers to use their own biometric data and inspirations to work with FUERZA artists to create their own FUERZA NFTs. They’re aiming for early 2023 to launch that service. Watch the website for updates on this and other related news.
