Why prostate cancer screening is the best Valentine’s Day gift for the man you love

News Image

Men, who skip prostate cancer screenings believing prostate cancer won’t happen to them, are tempting fate. Why take this risk when there are reliable screening tools for detecting the disease early?

The key to preventing or catching prostate cancer early is preventive care by screening for the disease. So, make this Valentine’s Day a show of love for your man, convincing him to put his health needs first starting with scheduling a PSA test.

Would you like to make this Valentine’s Day extra special for the man you love? Instead of a gift card or another box of chocolates, give him the gift of life by scheduling a prostate cancer screening.

Prostate cancer – the silent killer

Prostate cancer has the unfortunate distinction of being the second leading cause of cancer diagnosed in American men and the second leading cause of cancer death in men as well.1 It’s true that prostate cancer, sometimes called the silent killer, often grows slowly yet quietly with few if any symptoms. As a result, it’s not unusual for men to die with prostate cancer instead of from it. However, prostate cancers can become aggressive, spreading beyond the prostate glands’ boundaries, threatening a man’s life.

That’s why prostate screening is critical to catching this disease at an early, more treatable stage before it advances or spreads. When found early, before it metastasizes beyond the confines of the prostate gland, prostate cancer is highly treatable, with a 99 percent survival rate, which is incredible.2 I want men to know that the odds of this happening are significantly increased when men get screened for prostate cancer beginning at age 40 and yearly from then on.

Men, who skip prostate cancer screenings believing prostate cancer won’t happen to them, are tempting fate. Why take this risk when there are reliable screening tools for detecting the disease early?

What is prostate cancer screening?

Prostate cancer screening is a quick and simple blood test done at a doctor’s office and a vital tool for detecting this disease. The screening test is called a PSA test which stands for prostate-specific antigen, a protein found mainly in semen and made by both noncancerous and cancerous cells of the prostate gland. Tiny amounts of this protein are released into the bloodstream.

Unfortunately, beginning in 2014, due to changes made in prostate cancer screening recommendations, the incidence of prostate cancer in the United States has increased by 3% each year and almost 5% per year for more deadly advanced-stage prostate cancer.3

As a urologist caring for men with prostate cancer, this is a huge concern. My goal has always been to educate men and their loved ones about this terrible disease, helping save more men’s lives. Accurate prostate health information for men is crucial. When men are knowledgeable about and understand the risk factors associated with prostate cancer, instead of feeling scared, I want them to feel equipped with the awareness of what they can and can’t control. From there, the goal is to inspire men to schedule yearly prostate cancer screenings and make positive lifestyle changes to help reduce their risk.

I’ve had the privilege of treating men with prostate cancer worldwide. Unfortunately, many men are often reluctant to see a doctor, especially for urological symptoms that may indicate prostate cancer. These symptoms may include a weak urine stream, pain or burning when urinating, or seeing blood in the urine. But, these same symptoms may not be prostate cancer. Instead, they could be noncancerous problems such as an enlarged prostate known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or from prostatitis, an inflammation of the prostate. However, the only way to know for sure is to see a urologist for a definitive diagnosis. If it’s prostate cancer, hopefully, it’s still contained within the prostate gland and has not spread to lymph nodes or bones, making treatment more challenging.

Bottom line

If the man you love has concerns about screening for prostate cancer, encourage him to talk to their urologist. Then, go with him to the appointment so you can learn yourself why taking this necessary test is essential for keeping him healthy.

In conclusion, the key to preventing or catching prostate cancer early is preventive care by screening for the disease. So, make this Valentine’s Day a show of love for your man, convincing him to put his health needs first starting with scheduling a PSA test. That way, you can increase the odds of celebrating many more future Valentine’s Days together, thanks to having a healthy prostate.

Spine Surgeon Introduces Novel Method for Treating Chronic Back and Neck Pain

LIFT: Meditations to Boost Back Health is a new series of instructional meditations created by spinal and orthopedic surgeon, Ken Hansraj, MD, to improve spine health, help lessen chronic neck and back pain, and provide an alternative to surgery and medication.

Ken Hansraj, MD, the Spine Surgeon who brought international attention to the global health problem of “Text Neck,” introduces LIFT: Meditations to Boost Back Health, a new series of instructional meditations created to improve spine health, help lessen chronic neck and back pain, and provide an alternative to surgery and medication.

Countless people around the world are suffering with chronic neck and back pain and the treatment is costing the global economy an estimated billions of dollars each year. In addition, the current opioid crisis in the U.S. has many looking for an alternative to medication for relief of chronic pain. Research and clinical application support that meditation can significantly reduce pain. LIFT: Meditations to Boost Back Health were designed by a medical physician to help in pain management and to provide the tools to protect the spine and improve wellbeing.

“As a spinal surgeon, I have spent my life treating chronic pain. I have seen many people sometimes suffer needlessly because of improper posture, poor habits, and mind-set,” said Dr. Hansraj. “Chronic pain, especially back pain, can negatively impact a person’s quality of life, but there are alternatives to medication. I have seen first-hand the profound effects of meditation and it inspired me to create the LIFT meditation program to help the many people around the world afflicted with neck and back pain.”

LIFT: Meditations to Boost Back Health is a six-part program developed and led by Dr. Hansraj to help improve neck and spine health, shift focus, and provide an alternative therapy to surgery and medication.

Through each LIFT meditation, Dr. Hansraj takes listeners on a journey through various scenarios of directed thoughts and suggestions to lead the imagination toward a relaxed, focused state to help cleanse physical and emotional burdens. The LIFT guided meditations are designed to help listeners become better in tuned with their bodies and to better recognize everyday postural forces that can cause back and neck pain. Throughout the program, Dr. Hansraj teaches techniques to release tension and pain and help listeners improve wellbeing.

“I believe in whole-body wellness, preventative care, and treating the spine as the principal indicator of general health,” said Dr. Hansraj. “As part of a holistic approach, I recommend meditation to my patients as a supplemental therapy.”

LIFT: Meditations to Boost Back Health was produced by Greg Knowles, James Fallon, and Joe Costable at the award-winning Bimperl Studio. Grammy award winner Darlene Koldenhoven and Juilliard professors Kendall Durelle Briggs, Emi Ferguson and Forrest Gore rendered the beautiful supporting music.

LIFT is available on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, iTunes, Pandora, Deezer, and can be sampled at DrKen.HearNow.com

The Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon invites the community to its upcoming event weekend from Saturday, April 22 to Sunday, April 23, 2023. More than a run, the event promises to be an all-out celebration the entire community can enjoy.

“Expect more fun this year! We have a bigger and better weekend planned with the return of the full marathon, and new attractions for the whole family,” said Aaron Zeigler, CEO & owner of Zeigler Auto Group, the Marathon’s main sponsor.

Then Sunday, there will be plenty of areas to celebrate and cheer on runners along the route, finish line, and during award presentations. Community members can also volunteer for the event, or simply enjoy all the fun the Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon has to offer.

For the first time ever, the marathon will include a run through Western Michigan University’s Waldo football stadium, among other iconic landmarks. The 10K and 5K walk/run will also continue to feature popular mile marker stops such as the Bacon Station, the Gummy Bear Forest, the Pickle Pit and more.

“We feel so fortunate that so many of our partners, from Downtown Kalamazoo and the greater Kalamazoo area, share our vision for Driving a Healthy Community! With April 22nd and 23rd kicking off spring, getting outside and having fun at a community celebration is something anyone can be a part of and all will enjoy!” said Carrie Drake, Zeigler Kalamazoo Marathon race director.

The Stryker Experience is also set to return at the finish line, this family-friendly celebration is free and open to the entire community. It will include a kids area, DJ, refreshments from a variety of food vendors; and adult beverages courtesy of sponsor Imperial Beverage and Short’s Brewing.

OHM Fitness Locks in Expansion Plans for Colorado, Kansas & Missouri & Awards 7 Additional Franchise Licenses in Last 30 Days

OHM Fitness Brings EMS Fitness Across U.S.

“I could feel the suit working my muscles in a way I’ve never experienced. The 25-minute, low-impact workout felt easy, yet the results blew my mind. I was sore the next day and felt like I had lifted weights for hours. The suits did all of the work.” – Kathy Franklin

OHM Fitness awards three new territories and seven additional franchise licenses in developing territories in the first month of 2023. The rapidly growing fitness franchise opened its flagship studio last summer and is already set to open EMS fitness studios in eight states.

In January 2023, the following territories were awarded to experienced, multi-unit area representatives:

Colorado

Kathy Franklin secured the area representative rights to the state of Colorado, including 25 franchise licenses. The experienced entrepreneur recently sold her European Wax Center portfolio and was searching for a new opportunity when she was introduced to OHM Fitness. She plans to open at least three locations with her sons learning the business alongside her. She is already searching for ideal retail locations in the greater Denver area.

“I was initially skeptical, so I invited my three sons to join me to get their insights. The class was so unexpected and so much fun. We felt inspired by the trainers and the energy from the moment we walked in the door,” said Franklin. “As the class progressed, I could feel the suit working all of my muscles in a way I’ve never experienced. The 25-minute, low-impact workout felt easy, and yet the results blew our minds. We were sore the next day and felt like we had lifted weights for hours. The suits did all of the work.”

Kansas & Missouri

Beth and Steve Brown were awarded the area representative rights to both Kansas, including eight franchise licenses, and Missouri with 14 franchise licenses. The married couple will open three OHM Fitness studios themselves and plan to have their first location open by July 2023. Steve is a 10-year seasoned franchisee, having owned multiple thriving European Wax Centers in Kansas and Missouri. The pair was attracted to the franchise because of the experienced founding team and once they experienced the workout, they saw a big opportunity with only 25-minute classes that provide the results of a two- or three-hour workout.

Also in January 2023, John and Janet Mok secured three franchise licenses to expand the OHM Fitness brand into Bergen and Passaic Counties, N.J. The married couple is searching for three ideal retail locations in hopes of opening their first location this summer. They previously owned three European Wax Centers for 10 years, and two Amazing Lash Studios for four years. John ran all day-to-day operations and Janet, a former HBO marketing executive, was involved in the marketing efforts.

In South Florida, Dean Kapneck was awarded four franchise licenses with plans to target opening locations around Fort Lauderdale, Boca Raton and Delray Beach. Kapneck hopes to open his first location in the next six months. He also comes with a successful track record in franchising, having owned and operated 11 European Wax Centers in New Jersey and Maryland. He recently moved to Boca Raton after selling his locations and sees a big opportunity with OHM Fitness.

OHM Fitness offers a high-tech, high-energy EMS fitness experience that packs the benefits of an intense 2.5-hour workout into one low-impact, 25-minute session, producing impressive results with a desirably low rate of wear and tear on the body. Territories in development now include Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, San Diego, South Florida, New Jersey, and Washington D.C. totaling more than 150 future studios.

“At OHM Fitness, we help you beat your brain at its own game,” said Co-Founder & CEO Doug Payne. “Your brain sends electrical signals to your muscles to make them move. But muscles can only contract about once per second or repetition. OHM Fitness lets you use science and technology to actively game the system.”

This low-impact workout has been connected to researched-based benefits such as fat loss, skin health, energy, stress and anxiety levels, muscle strength, and acute and chronic pain.

OHM Fitness is a special first-to-market franchise opportunity for entrepreneurs and experienced franchise industry professionals who are eager to capture their share in the $96 billion dollar fitness industry. The initial franchise fee is $39,000 and the total estimated initial investment ranges from $337,500 to $612,700. GaitBetter, a digital neurotherapeutics company providing a state-of-the-art motor-cognitive virtual reality (VR) intervention for gait rehabilitation and fall prevention, announced today the granting of a new Current Procedural Terminology (CPT®) Category III add-on code 0791T for its technology. The new CPT add-on code is used in conjunction with CPT code 97116 (Gait Training) and will become effective on July 1, 2023. Healthcare providers can submit claims with the new code when they perform a 15-minute gait training session in conjunction with the FDA-listed GaitBetter system. Any clinic providing and any patient requiring gait training will benefit immensely from this new CPT code. This includes, but not limited to, patients with total knee replacement that experience gait impairment, post-acute or chronic neurological patients struggling with motor-cognitive function, or older adults with a history of falls.

“As the owner of multiple physical therapy clinics and an active user of GaitBetter, I understand the importance of utilizing the most current and accurate coding for our patients’ treatments,” commented Dr. Todd Mason, DPT, founder of Total Fitness Connection. “With the new CPT add-on code 0791T covering the use of GaitBetter during gait training (CPT 97116), we can ensure that our clinics receive the most appropriate reimbursement while also tracking and measuring the effectiveness of the treatment. I’m very excited about the opportunity to bring best practices to my neuro, ortho, and geriatric patients while also strongly differentiating my clinic.”

“This is an important reimbursement milestone for providers who wish to advance gait rehabilitation treatment for patients with gait disorders due to neurodegeneration, and chronic or post-acute conditions,” commented Hilik Harari, CEO of GaitBetter. “The American Medical Association’s decision to issue a new CPT code covering GaitBetter’s intervention is further evidence of the value of our established and proven technology.”

Clinically proven to accelerate more positive outcomes and reduce falls by over 70%, GaitBetter’s innovative solution enables clinicians to tailor therapy intensity and specificity to the unique needs of their patients.

Harnessing AI-based gait tracking, patients play a fun and safe ‘game’ as they see their feet movements projected into a VR environment displayed on a TV screen in front of them. Easily added to any treadmill, patients face virtual obstacles to improve gait while performing complex tasks requiring attention, memory, motor planning and execution to enhance motor-cognitive skills. This innovative dual-tasking approach combined with gamified therapy accelerates outcomes while keeping patients immersed, happy and motivated.

Andrew Demetre, Charleston Fitness Coach, Explains Training Strategy in New Interview

Andrew Demetre a Charleston fitness coach, is excited to announce that he is featured in a new interview with IdeaMensch. In the interview, Demetre describes how he got into fitness, created his business, his unique approach to business, and more.

In the interview, Demetre explains that he moved to Charleston, South Carolina, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Realizing that he was just “wasting away in quarantine,” he quickly learned just how valuable it was to increase the versatility of training programs.

Without access to a gym, Andrew Demetre incorporated calisthenics into his regimen, which didn’t require any weights. After finding success in his own workouts, he was then able to expand his client base to make Zoom calls and house calls before building an at-home gym in his garage.

During this journey, Andrew Demetre, realized that following the “traditional” training model wasn’t necessary anymore. Not only did he find that most of his clients preferred working from home, but they also preferred working out from home.

As he explains in the IdeaMensch interview, all his clients today are bodybuilders with very busy lives. As such, they don’t fit into the traditional definition of someone who lifts weights.

“I’ve spent most of my career in gyms,” said Andrew Demetre in the interview. “I never thought about the possibility of being able to make the same gains at home without even needing weights. That doesn’t mean I don’t incorporate weight training, but I want my clients to know there’s more flexibility than they realize.”

In addition to talking about his journey in fitness, Andrew Demetre explains what his typical day looks like and how he ensures it’s productive, how he brings ideas to life, the trends that excite him, and the habits that make him more productive as an entrepreneur.

IdeaMensch is an interview platform for doers, makers, and entrepreneurs, helping them expand their reach through the publication of their in-depth interview pieces.

In his interview, Demetre, says that word-of-mouth recommendations and marketing are the strategies that helped him to grow his business. He said that building good rapport among clients is important because they’ll often tell others about his business.

This is especially important in the world of fitness, he explains, as he knows his clients won’t be training forever. When they stop working with him, they’ll still bring tons of value to Andrew Demetre’s business by telling others about him.
