Northwest Houston gains an Edge on health

CorePower Yoga is Coming to Chapel Hill

CorePower Yoga, America’s leading yoga studio, is expanding its presence in the Triangle later this winter with a new studio opening in Chapel Hill’s Eastgate Shopping Center. This will be the fourth location in the region, making it even more convenient for students to experience the community, consistency in practice, and the variety of classes offered at CorePower Yoga’s fitness studios.

The Chapel Hill location will be open seven days a week with classes offered throughout the day, beginning at 6 a.m. and ending at 8 p.m. The new studio is approximately 3,437 square feet and will be equipped with two large studios and men’s and women’s spa-inspired changing rooms, showers, vanity areas and lockers.

Four class formats will be offered including CorePower Yoga 1, CorePower Yoga 2, Hot Power Fusion and Yoga Sculpt. Formats range in style, difficulty and flow to fit every experience level. All classes are designed to fire up strength, ignite intention and build the core.

First Holocaust Survivor Climbs Kilimanjaro at Age 83

When things became arduous, Shaffir heard his father’s words, ‘Never give up.’

On August 24, 2019, Nat Shaffir was on top of the world.

He had reached to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, the tallest peak in Africa. His body was physically exhausted, but his spirit was overjoyed.

“I was in seventh heaven,” Shaffir recalled.

This was not the first struggle that he has had to overcome.

Shaffir is a Holocaust Survivor – the first to successfully climb Kilimanjaro.

HIS EARLY YEARS    

In 1942, when Shaffir was just five years old, a priest showed up at his family’s dairy farm in Romania. The priest knew the family well. He visited weekly for donations. But this time, he was accompanied by a police officer and two soldiers.

“These are Jews,” the priest said to the officer.

The military confiscated the farm and cattle. The family was forced to relocate to the Jewish ghetto in Iasi. There, Shaffir lived in poverty in a crowded room with his two sisters and parents. His parents were given manual labor jobs while he and his sisters were forbidden to attend school.

His father was later taken away to a distant labor camp, leaving young Shaffir to care for the rest of the family. Before he left, his father told him that things would get harder.

“Never give up,” his father said.

Those three words have kept Shaffir going for his entire life.

CLIMBING KILIMANJARO

Mount Kilimanjaro stands 19,340 feet above sea level. Climbing the peak does not require any technical skills or special equipment. But it is a formidable test due to its extreme altitude. Reaching the top takes physical fitness and determination.

Shaffir kept a slow but steady pace on the mountain. He encountered adversity on some parts of the terrain. He also struggled to eat on nearly the entire hike due to a loss of appetite, one of the common symptoms of altitude sickness.

“Climbing Kilimanjaro at my age was tough,” Shaffir admitted.

But when things became arduous, he heard his father’s words, “Never give up.”

He knew that he would make it to the summit.

“Nat had great endurance and determination,” said lead guide Raymond Mandari of Ultimate Kilimanjaro. “Climbing Kilimanjaro is a big accomplishment for anyone, but for an 83-year old, it is remarkable.”

INSPIRING OTHERS

Shaffir climbed Kilimanjaro to inspire others to challenge themselves to do the same, to conquer their own metaphorical mountains.

He has a message for those that find themselves in troubling times. “To people who are experiencing hardship, difficulties, atrocities, and hate – never give up.”

Russian soldiers liberated Iasi in 1945. By then, 32 members of Shaffir’s family had died in Nazi concentration camps.

Shaffir moved to the United States in 1961. He and his wife have five children and 12 grandchildren – all of them named after family members lost during the Holocaust.

Frame Park is the First National Demonstration Site to be Awarded Four NDS Designations


“We make a concerted effort to find ways to better respond to the community’s needs, especially when it comes to health and wellness,” according to City of Waukesha Parks, Recreation & Forestry (WPRF) Director Ron Grall.

Frame Park in Waukesha, Wisconsin is the first National Demonstration Site to be awarded four designations. This signature city park will allow the community to enjoy an outdoor adult fitness space and an inclusive playground that offers the six elements of play in a naturalized setting.

“We make a concerted effort to find ways to better respond to the community’s needs, especially when it comes to health and wellness,” according to City of Waukesha Parks, Recreation & Forestry (WPRF) Director Ron Grall. When proposed with the idea of becoming a National Demonstration Site, they gladly accepted the challenge. Out of the 30 playgrounds in the park system, they chose Frame Park to be the site for this project, as it is heavily-used and recognizable by the community and regional area. As the department reviewed the NDS designation options, they found it difficult to leave anything on the table as they each can offer unique benefits to the community in a variety of ways. The team reached out to Minnesota Wisconsin Playgrounds of Minneapolis, MN, to make their dreams come true. As a team trained in National Demonstration Site design, Minnesota Wisconsin was thrilled to be a part of the project.

Once extensive equipment plans were formalized with the NDS goals in mind, decisions needed to be made regarding the disposition of their existing playground equipment. Waukesha identified a way to bring the “joy of play” to communities in need by partnering with the Kids Around the World (KAW) program. KAW “harvested” and refurbished the old playground equipment with the end goal of relocating to a poverty-stricken area of the world. Following the playground “harvest”, WPRF held a “community build” September 3-5 with 182 community volunteers participating to bring their new space to life! The new play and fitness space also features a fully accessible poured-in-place rubber surfacing that exceeds current “fall factor” standards.

Grand Opening is scheduled for September 18, 2019 from 5-7 PM (CDT). Each National Demonstration Site designation area will be hosting individual activities, NatureGrounds will have a tree planting, DJ entertainment, community picnic, and tree identification; Outdoor Adult Fitness will have personal trainer sessions demonstrating safety tips and how to use the equipment; Inclusion and Play On! playground will have game sessions utilizing activities found in 2Play Together and Play On! to show families and the community how they can best utilize the play space. Waukesha plans to continue to program the space by adding the activity books to their public library for community use and will host a personal trainer session once a month from September to November.
