Global Wellness Institute Releases 2nd White Paper in its “Understanding Wellness” Series

https://www.prweb.com/

The wellness economy is now a $4.2 trillion global industry, yet the growth has been largely a private sector phenomenon and off the radar of most government leaders, policymakers and economic developers.

The Global Wellness Institute™ (GWI), a nonprofit research and educational resource for the world wellness industry, today released the second white paper in its “Understanding Wellness” series. The white papers are designed to serve as primers for policymakers, businesspeople, researchers and students on how wellness has become a major force around the world and the ways it will evolve in the future.

This second paper, “Opportunities and Impacts of the Wellness Economy for Regional Development,” outlines the ways a growing wellness industry can facilitate development and growth in countries, regions and communities around the world.

READ THE WHITE PAPER HERE

“The wellness economy is now a $4.2 trillion global industry, yet the growth has been largely a private sector phenomenon and off the radar of most government leaders, policymakers and economic developers,” explained Ophelia Yeung, GWI senior researcher and coauthor of the series.

“We think it’s time governments around the world start paying more attention to this crucial sector, not only because it enables economic development, competitiveness and growth, but because it has massive implications in the arenas of health, urban planning, environmental and cultural sustainability, workforce equity and diversity, social and cultural affairs, and much more,” continued Katherine Johnston, GWI senior researcher and coauthor of the series.

Wellness is now over half the size of global health expenditures, which were estimated at $7.3 trillion in 2015*. As an industry, wellness is a major force in the global economy—close in size to the information and communications technology (ICT) industry and larger than the sports, pharmaceuticals, and travel and tourism industries.

Expect in-depth, digestible analysis on the following topics:

Wellness is an economic growth driver.

  • Employment creation and small business development
  • Promotion of locally sourced, produced and branded products
  • Women’s empowerment and benefits to families

Wellness improves public health.

  • Mitigating rising healthcare costs
  • Improving health equity by engaging wellness workers in the community
  • Addressing the growing mental health epidemic
  • Harnessing indigenous wellness knowledge, traditions and modalities

Wellness supports the protection of natural and cultural assets.

  • Environmental protection
  • Preserve and celebrate local culture and heritage
  • Mitigate tourism-related challenges

Safety Tips for Seniors During Fire Prevention Week

In observance of Fire Prevention Week, Home Instead Senior Care wants to help older adults identify potential fire risks in their homes. For family members or family caregivers, Fire Prevention Week is the perfect time to have a conversation about fire safety with aging loved ones, as they may be particularly vulnerable in the event of a fire.

For example, over time, a decrease in sensory skills can make it difficult for seniors to identify signs of a fire. They may not smell natural gas or burning food. Vision impairments can contribute to depth perception issues, increasing risks related to placing flammable items near open flames, such as candles or stovetops.

“As we age, it’s natural that we lose the full-capacity of our senses,” explains Lakelyn Hogan, Gerontologist and Caregiver Advocate at Home Instead Senior Care. “Because their senses can’t protect them like they once could, we must take time for extra precautions to help seniors protect themselves in other ways from fire risks.”

Additional factors that can put seniors at increased risk include memory loss and limited mobility. Memory loss can be a dangerous factor when a senior forgets to turn off the oven, blow out a candle or clean out the lint drawer in the dryer. For those with mobility challenges, they may need assistance to evacuate in the event of a fire, especially for those living in a multilevel dwelling, such as an apartment where elevators will not be in use and they must exit by stairs.

Home Instead Senior Care offers these five tips to help reduce the risk of fire loss in your home or the home of a loved one:

  • Install Senior-Friendly Smoke Alarms – Smoke alarms are imperative in ensuring the safety of a senior in their home. Family members should conduct routine checks on smoke alarms to make sure they are working. Consider installing alarms that use voice-technology to alert of a fire. Hearing a voice may be more distinguishable for a senior than a beeping noise.
  • Use Candle Alternatives – Candles create great fire risks in the home. They are easily forgotten. Wall plug-in lights are a smart alternative to open-flame candles for seniors to decrease the risk of catching nearby objects on fire.
  • Make Fire Extinguishers Accessible – Do not store fire extinguishers in hard-to-reach places or out of sight from the kitchen. Seniors should keep fire extinguishers in easy-to-reach places where they can get them quickly.
  • Keep Outlets Clear – Electric malfunctions are a leading cause of house fires. Make sure to keep flammable items away from outlets. Also, do not plug too many devices into an outlet. This is especially true in the winter months, when electricity use is high and people put up seasonal decorations.
  • Set-up an evacuation plan – For seniors with limited mobility, or those that live alone, establish a plan for evacuation in the event of a fire. Practice that plan to make sure your aging loved one knows how to get out. This may include getting neighbors involved to ensure someone is available and prepared to assist in the event that evacuation becomes necessary.

https://www.prweb.com/

Jessi Freitag and Wade Brooks from LivBar, with Susan Schechter (middle) OOC Board Treasurer

LivBar is honored to be recognized by the Oregon Organic Coalition. We take great pride in making our bars organic and hope to use this award to further educate consumers about the benefits of supporting organic products.

LivBar was named “Processor of the Year” by the Oregon Organic Coalition in the 2019 Organic Awards for Excellence. To be considered for this prestigious award, nominees are required to qualify in a variety of categories, including innovation in organic practices; service to the industry; expansion of organic business opportunities; and overall achievement in the state’s organic trade.

The recipients of the 2019 Oregon Organic Coalition (OOC) Awards for Excellence were presented awards by OOC leadership during a statewide tour of recipient individuals and organizations. Susan Schechter, OOC Board Treasurer, presented LivBar’s award in Salem to CEO Wade Brooks and Director of Marketing and Operations Jessi Freitag.

Brooks said, “LivBar is honored to be recognized by the Oregon Organic Coalition. We take great pride in making our bars organic and hope to use this award to further educate consumers about the benefits of supporting organic products.”

“We’d like to thank the Oregon Organic Coalition for their support of organic companies like LivBar,” Freitag said. “Everyone at LivBar is passionate about living and buying organic and also sustainability practices, such as compostable packaging. Together we can make real change in the consumer packaged goods industry!”

LivBar is setting a new standard for energy bars by creating a bar that is made from organic, whole food in a planet-friendly compostable wrapper. LivBar recently publicly challenged energy bar juggernaut CLIF Bar, and the bar community at large, to switch to compostable packaging in addition to all-organic ingredients. LivBar also does not use a co-packer and instead hand-bakes every bar in Oregon, creating and keeping organic product manufacturing jobs in the state.

This latest award for LivBar comes directly on the heels of the company’s nomination as one of the top gluten free snack bars by the Gluten Free Awards and their win as “Entrepreneur of the Year” from SEDCOR. Earlier in the year, LivBar was awarded “Most Mindful Consumer Packaged Good” by the Mindful Awards.

LivBars are currently available online at Amazon Prime, Amazon Subscribe and Save, direct from the LivBar website (http://www.livbar.com), and in hundreds of stores including Erewhon, New Seasons Markets, Market of Choice, Zupan’s, Garden Bar, and Roth’s Fresh Markets.

Oi’s Message of Positive Protest Turns Environmental Passion into Action

“Positive protest can generate lasting change,” says Helen Robinson, CEO of Oi. “Together we can help to change the environment. The average woman uses 11,000 tampons and pads in her lifetime. Switching to organics, or the reusable cup can remove millions of tons of waste from the environment.”

A recently conducted Oi survey of feminine hygiene users showed 94% agreed that organic tampons and pads are better for the environment than traditional synthetic products

Following the recent massive global protests against pollution and environmental destruction, Organic Initiative (Oi http://www.oi4me.com ) today released results from a survey that found people with periods are ready to take simple steps to protect the environment.

Company CEO and cofounder Helen Robinson also notes that through those actions, millions of tons of waste from traditional tampons and pads containing chemicals, synthetics, and chlorine bleaches can be removed from the earth and oceans.

The U.S. survey was conducted with 560 feminine hygiene users and 4 focus groups. It found that once they realized what was in their products, 94 percent of those surveyed said they strongly or somewhat agreed that organic tampons and pads would be better for the environment. Also, 85 percent strongly or somewhat agreed that organic cotton was better for their health.

Oi is a New Zealand-based company with a product range made from pure, 100% certified organic cotton tampons and pads, and a form-fitting Oi Cup, reusable for up to three years. Since launching in New Zealand in 2015, and the U.S. in 2018, Oi and Robinson have had a singular mission…to take plastics out of hygiene products, beginning with feminine hygiene.

Oi leadership also wanted to educate the market about what was in their tampons and pads. “Our packaging needed to work hard for us and was inspired by protest placards for change. Our packs carry positive protest messages, including “pure inside, nothing to hide,” “biodegradable is not debatable,” and “safe, not synthetic.” We see environmental placards in the hands of a new generation demanding action. This is one way we can all make a difference.” says Robinson.

The company backs up its core messaging with a firm commitment to doing what is best for the earth. Oi’s packaging is biodegradable, and even the pad wrappers are made with cornstarch to break down upon composting. To date, Oi has removed more than 30 million tampons and pads made from non-biodegradable synthetics from the environment.

“We believe the way to generate lasting change is through positive protest,” says Robinson. “Our message is that together all of us with periods can help to change the environment. Consider that the average woman uses 11,000 tampons and pads in her lifetime, switching to organics, or the reusable cup, can take millions of tons of waste out of the environment.”

A growing recognition of the value of products like Oi has helped to propel the organic tampon marketplace to significant growth over the past year. Analysts predict the product category in the U.S. will reach nearly $34 billion by 2025.

Oi also addresses three other issues of importance to people with periods: comfort, safety, and cost. Cotton is one of the softest and naturally absorbent products on the market – able to absorb almost 27-times its weight in liquid. Oi also tackles the issue of affordability by making the product accessible to a broad range of consumers. Oi is sold in stores like Walmart and CVS that emphasize everyday low prices.

“We want people with periods to know they can have it all when it comes to feminine hygiene products like Oi,” said Robinson. “We want to make it super easy to stop polluting the planet, as well as provide a product that works, that is safe and comfortable and based on customers’ feedback, better for their health. If we can get just one hundred people a day to switch to organic feminine products, in a year, we’ll remove more than 7,300,000 tampons and pads and millions of tons of waste from the environment – that will be something to celebrate!”

Olympian Rowdy Gaines Makes a Splash for Orlando Swimmers

The legacy of swimmer Rowdy Gaines has just grown even larger. The three-time Olympic gold medalist and International Swimming Hall of Famer is leaving his impact on Orlando-area swimmers: he just helped to bring an Endless Pools® Elite model to their local YMCA for technique and endurance training.

Gaines has a decades-long history with Endless Pools; he’s owned two of their models to help him stay active from the convenience of home. A familiar face to swim fans for his analysis on the ESPN and NBC networks, Gaines also serves as Vice President, Aquatics, for YMCA of Central Florida, which operates 22 locations across six counties.

Said Gaines, “Everyone in the YMCA of Central Florida community owes a great debt of gratitude to the team at Endless Pools. Their top-of-the-line Elite model will put world-class training opportunities within reach for the widest possible swath of Orlando residents.”

The partnership between Endless Pools and the YMCA of Central Florida will include live-streaming events; viewers around the world will be able to watch Gaines offer technique training tips using the Endless Pools current. Additionally, Gaines will personally coach young swimmers in the up-close, hands-on environment afforded by Endless Pools’ swim-in-place technology.

“Everyone here at Endless Pools shares my admiration and respect for Rowdy,” said Endless Pools General Manager, Darren Pearse; “He was an early adopter of our swim-in-place technology and continues to be one of the sport’s most ardent advocates. He had an infectious passion for bringing an Endless Pools Elite model to Orlando’s recreational swimmers and future Olympians, and we’re thrilled to see our joint passion project come to fruition.”

The Endless Pools installation resides on the swim deck of the Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando. Alongside its lap-pool programs, the YMCA will use the Endless Pools adjustable swim current for endurance and technique training. By permitting in-place swimming, the Endless Pools current creates unprecedented opportunities for real-time stroke correction. The pool features an underwater Swim Mirror to help swimmers monitor their hand entry, pull through, and shoulder rolls with immediate feedback.

The Endless Pools Elite model features the company’s smoothest current with the fastest top speed. The current adjusts from near-zero speeds for beginners to a challenging sprint pace of 51 seconds per 100 yards. The Elite model has been installed at universities including Penn State, USC, and Auburn as well as at the corporate headquarters of swim gear brands Speedo USA and ROKA. An Endless Pools Elite model is also available for swimmers at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The pool’s grand opening will be part of the 2019 Renovation Dedication Celebration on Tuesday, October 8, 2019, at 10:00 am, at the Rosen YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando, Florida.

ABOUT ENDLESS POOLS

Established in 1988, Endless Pools has served tens of thousands of satisfied pool owners in more than 100 countries. Best known for their adjustable current for swimming in place, the Endless Pools product line features residential and commercial models for recreation, athletic training, family fun, physical therapy, and more. Founded on a belief in the power of water to inspire, invigorate, and rehabilitate, Endless Pools is now part of Watkins Manufacturing Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Fortune 500 company, Masco Corporation (MAS). National Experts Call on the American Public to Recognize Public Health Crisis and Take Action During National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month

https://www.prweb.com/

You can save a life!

Our growing Survivor Network is a testament to the fact that immediate bystander CPR and defibrillation greatly increases the likelihood of survival from sudden cardiac arrest.

October is National Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness Month. Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a public health crisis. It strikes 1,000 people each day in the U.S. alone. Thousands of lives could be saved each year if more people understood the critical importance of bystander intervention with CPR and the use of automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation urges the public to take some simple steps to be prepared.

Sudden cardiac arrest is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating. Usually, there is no warning. It strikes people of all ages who may seem to be healthy, even children and teens. When SCA happens, the person collapses and doesn’t respond or breathe normally. They may gasp or shake as if having a seizure. SCA leads to death in minutes if the person does not get help right away. Survival depends on people nearby calling 911, starting CPR, and using an AED as soon as possible.

Today, only 1 in 10 victims survives. But when bystanders give CPR and use an AED at the scene, as many as 5 in 10 victims survive. And, since sudden cardiac arrest most often occurs at home, laypersons will most likely be called upon to help save the life of a loved one.

Here’s what everyone needs to know:

Survival from SCA depends on the quick actions of people nearby who call 911, start CPR and use an AED to restart the heart. Specifically, they should:

  • Recognize sudden cardiac arrest. If a person is unresponsive and not breathing normally, assume it is SCA.
  • Call 911 and follow dispatcher instructions.
  • Start CPR. Push hard and fast on the center of the chest at a rate of 100-120 beats per minute (e.g., to the tune of “Baby Shark” or “Staying Alive”).
  • Use the nearest AED as quickly as possible to restart the heart.

“Our growing Survivor Network is a testament to the fact that immediate bystander CPR and defibrillation greatly increases the likelihood of survival from sudden cardiac arrest,” said Mary Newman, MS, Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation president. “And, since most cardiac arrests occur in the home, taking time to learn CPR and how to use an AED could mean the difference between life and death for a loved one.”

About the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation

The Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation is a national community benefit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to raising awareness about sudden cardiac arrest and saving lives.
