Semper Fi Fund Serves as Largest Charity Partner 8 Years Running

News Image

“All of us at the Fund are humbled and inspired by the athletes who choose to represent and support the Fund by raising money for our critical mission, as well as all the staff and volunteers who support them. It’s always a weekend to remember!” – Karen Guenther, President, CEO, and Founder

With the 44th annual Marine Corps Marathon in Arlington, Virginia, this weekend, the Semper Fi Fund is anticipating bringing its largest charity partner team ever to “The People’s Marathon.” The event marks 8 years of the Semper Fi Fund (SFF) being the Marathon’s largest charity partner, with more than 750 athletes.

“The Marine Corps Marathon is always one of the highlights of the year for all of us at the Fund,” said Karen Guenther, President, CEO and Founder of the Semper Fi Fund. “Last year, we had more than 400 Community Athletes, and we raised over $500,000 in support of our mission. We’re hoping to exceed that at this year’s event! All of us at the Fund are humbled and inspired by the athletes who choose to represent and support the Fund by raising money for our critical mission, as well as all the staff and volunteers who support them. It’s always a weekend to remember!”

Team Semper Fi (TSF), the Semper Fi Fund’s adaptive sports program for wounded, ill and injured Service members, will also have its largest showing to date at the 44th Marine Corps Marathon, embodying the team’s motto “Recovery Through Sport.” TSF will have 10 athletes running the MCM 50K, 80 running the full marathon, 23 hand-cyclists, and 31 athletes running their first marathon. Rob Jones, a USMC veteran, motivational speaker, Paralympic athlete, and candidate for the VA 10th Congressional District 2020 election will be running the 50K for Team Semper FI.

The weekend includes a pre-race pasta dinner, which this year will be hosted by actor J.W. Cortes, known to television viewers as Detective Alvarez in Gotham and Agent Suarez in The Blacklist.

“I’m honored to be joining my brothers and sisters at the 44th Marine Corps Marathon,” said Cortes, who in 2017 ran both the 10k event in the Marine Corps Marathon and the New York City Marathon, both in support of the Semper Fi Fund. “I’m proud to be lending my support to the Fund, which is doing amazing work in providing assistance to those who have given, and continue to give, so much to us.”

The keynote speaker for the Semper Fi Fund’s annual pasta dinner will be General Joseph F. Dunford Jr. General Dunford served as the 19th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the nation’s highest-ranking military officer, and the principal military advisor to the President. He also served as the 36th Commandant of the Marine Corps from 2010 – 2012, the 32nd Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps from October 2010 – December 2012 and was the Commander of the International Security Assistance Force & US Forces Afghanistan from February 2013 to August 2014.

Miss D.C. for America 2019, Megan Eunpu, will also be running the MCM 10K. With her charity, Operation XYZ, Megan will be running the MCM 10K, and is hoping to raise over $2,500 for the Semper Fi Fund as well as Service members and their families. The Semper Fi Fund is honored to be the first non-profit to receive Operation WYZ’s support.

“The Semper Fi Fund has already done so much for injured Veterans, and their Families,” said Eunpu. “having a charity to run in support of fuels the fire even more! That is why I created Operation XYZ and am so proud to support the Semper Fi Fund for the first operation.”

The Marine Corps Marathon is the largest marathon in the world that doesn’t offer prize money, instead choosing to celebrate the honor, courage and commitment of all finishers. Over the years, it’s become known as “the best marathon for beginners.” SFF has 78 community athletes running their first marathon this year.

Those wishing to join the Fund October 27 can register online by visiting http://www.semperfifund.org/marine-corps-marathon-2019.

For press information and to arrange interviews with J.W. Cortes, Megan Eunpu, or any of the athletes running for the Semper Fi Fund, please contact John Schiavi, Semper Fi Fund, at john.schiavi@semperfifund.org or 781-354-6826

Unruly Launches Active Play Coding Program for Elementary and Middle Schools

Kids using Unruly Splats in Classroom

Kids using Unruly Splats in Classroom

“We design our experiences to include physical play at the core of coding with classmates. Kids naturally create their own games on the playground, so we want to bring their creativity and rule-making to learning the fundamentals of code.”

Edtech company, Unruly Studios, is bringing their passion for combining physical activity with learning the basics of coding to schools. This Fall, the company launched their one-of-a-kind STEM learning tool and school bundles in schools across the US and Canada.

To encourage kids to be active while they code rather than sitting at a desk, the company created Unruly Splats – super-durable, programmable devices that light up, make sounds, and sense when they are stomped on. Students code Splats using the company’s block-coding app on a Chromebook or tablet to create their own games and play them with classmates. Students have created fun-to-play games like radioactive whack-a-mole, animal relay races, and obstacle courses around school desks to name a few.

Bryanne Leeming, CEO of Unruly said, “We originally envisioned Splats as a way for kids to learn to code at home, but since we announced the product earlier this year, we have had an incredible response from schools. We learned that teachers and principals are looking for an affordable, effective STEM tool and their students love the idea of programming games.”

While visiting elementary and middle schools, Leeming noticed that coding tools like robots and other STEM products frequently sitting unused on a shelf gathering dust.

Leeming explained, “I talked to over 150 principals who told me that many of their teachers are not experienced in computer programming or have never been trained to teach it. As a result, many STEM tools go underutilized. We realized there was a need for ongoing training and just-in-time support to help teachers integrate coding and STEM into their existing curriculum. To meet this need, we created a school plan that bundles our Splats and block coding app with live online training, lesson plans, support videos, and an online community where teachers can share and learn from each other.”

Throughout the development of Unruly Splats and the school plans, Leeming worked closely with Dr. Amon Millner, Olin College professor and co-founder of Scratch, a block-coding language developed at the MIT Media Lab. He played a key role in developing the block-coding system on the Unruly Splats App and provided insights into the needs of educators. Millner also helped create a series of video tutorials for educators using Unruly Splats to familiarize them with the Unruly App and the basics of coding concepts.

Millner explained, “We design our experiences to include physical play at the core of coding with classmates. Kids naturally create their own games on the playground, so we want to bring their creativity and rule-making to learning the fundamentals of code” We also developed a growing library of lesson plans that align with NGSS, CSTA, and PE standards for grades 1-7 to ensure that our offerings add value to a variety of school experiences.”

To kick off the launch of their school plans, Unruly is announcing a Twitter sweepstakes contest open to any school teacher or administrator in the US and Canada. They are giving away a 12-Splat 1-Year School Plan valued at $1,200. The contest is held on their twitter account and runs until October 31st, 2019.

Unruly Studios has already seen the contest take off in the first few days. Leeming stated, “It’s been great to see enthusiastic entries from teachers and hear their creative ideas for Splats! For example, we have had a ton of excitement from PE teachers who are thrilled to bring Splats to their PE classes.”

About Unruly Studios: Unruly Studios is an edtech company that empowers students to learn critical STEM skills through active, social recess-style play! Their flagship product, Unruly Splats, are super-durable, programmable devices that light up, make sounds, and sense when they are stomped on. Splats were designed as an affordable school-wide tool that integrates easily into a variety of elementary and middle school learning spaces, including: STEM, PE, Technology classes, Libraries, After-School Programs, and Makerspaces.

Pelican Water Systems, now a part of Pentair, is excited to announce the expansion of their signature in-home services to Nashville, Tennessee, and the surrounding areas of Berry Hill, Brentwood, Hendersonville, and Goodlettsville. Pelican Water now enables customers to schedule a free consultation from a certified water expert with just a phone call. Pelican Water in-home water consultants arrive in a mobile retail center that is stocked with everything necessary to treat and test all types of home drinking water — a mini showroom, a water test station, and a selection of Pelican Water products to address individual water quality issues.

Metro Water Services, the primary water utility of the larger Nashville area, sources public drinking water from the Cumberland River. Trained Pelican Water consultants test water on-site in order to determine what specific quality and cosmetic issues might be present in any home’s water supply. Ten percent of Nashville residents drink private well water, which is unmonitored by the EPA and prone to contamination. An in-home service appointment presents a comprehensive solution to water quality issues like water hardness or rotten smells that are more common in rural areas surrounding Nashville.

Homeowners in Nashville can address concerns of worsening water quality due to aging infrastructure or regional drought with a convenient and completely free consultation. Pelican Water experts take the time to consider each homeowner’s budget and discuss the ideal customized water filtration system for the unique water quality issues found in the sample. Families in Nashville can enjoy higher-quality, great-tasting water in just three business days. Pelican Water systems are easy to install on their own, but having a professional correctly size and securely install a system brings an added peace of mind.

Nashville residents and homeowners and families concerned about their water quality can call today to schedule a free in-home consultation. Dedicated Senior Medical Centers Offer Affordable VIP Care

https://www.prweb.com/

Dedicated Logo

We’ve been transforming care for at-risk seniors for more than 30 years, because our doctors earn more trust.

ChenMed, a nationally recognized physician-led primary care provider serving seniors in Florida and seven more states through more than 60 locations, today announced grand opening for the third of three Dedicated Senior Medical Centers in Palm Beach County. The new Dedicated centers — located in underserved Delray Beach, Greenacres and Riviera Beach neighborhoods – honor seniors with affordable VIP care that delivers better health.

In stark contrast to traditional fee-for-service medical practices across America, where it’s frequently hard for patients to schedule timely appointments with their primary care physicians, Dedicated doctors make it easy for patients to stay connected with the doctor who knows them best. They provide high-touch personalized primary care, giving patients their personal cell phone numbers for timely replies to texts and/or calls. Plus, they welcome walk-in appointments whenever needed by their Medicare-eligible patients.

“Our expansion into Palm Beach County means more healthy days for thousands of deserving seniors – especially those living with multiple and major chronic health challenges,” says Christopher Chen, M.D., CEO of ChenMed. “We’ve been transforming care for at-risk seniors for more than 30 years, because our doctors earn more trust. They better detect and manage high-risk diseases. Plus, they reduce hospital admissions by investing substantively more time with every patient.”

Jason Barker, Regional Market President for 26 Chen and Dedicated Senior Medical Centers throughout Florida concurs, noting that “our primary care doctors serve an average of just 400 patients each. That’s less than one-fifth the national average of 2,300 patients per primary doctor, and it’s a real quality of care advantage for our seniors.”

The current and rapidly growing Dedicated Palm Beach County clinical team already includes:

ChenMed’s five-year investment in Palm Beach County is expected to exceed $60 million as the senior-focused practice provides intensive primary care for up to 8,000 seniors. Initially, the three Dedicated centers in Palm Beach County will employ about 60 full-time workers, including front desk, Medical Assistants, RN case managers, and physicians – the vast majority of whom will be hired locally.

The Dedicated Centers in Palm Beach County are located at:

  • Greenacres – 4998 10th Avenue North (corner of 10th and Haverhill)
  • Delray Beach – 5848 West Atlantic Avenue
  • Riviera Beach – 3002 Broadway Avenue

Ribbon cutting at Riviera Beach, Wednesday, October 23

  • When:         10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  •                      10:30 to 10:45 a.m. VIP tour
  •                      10:45 to 11:15 a.m. official welcome and ribbon cutting
  • Who:            ChenMed founder James Chen, M.D., Ph.D.
  •                      ChenMed Chief Medical Officer Gordon Chen, M.D.; Riviera Beach
  •                      Councilwoman Dr. Julia Botel and Councilman Douglas A. Lawson
  •                      Dedicated doctors, diverse community leaders and 150 to 200 seniors

More time with patients means better outcomes

The Dedicated center concept is simple and vital to Medicare-eligible seniors, many of whom are living with major and multiple chronic health challenges. Dedicated primary care physicians average 10 times more face-to-face time with their patients than a typical physician does. Instead of the national average of just 20.3 minutes of direct time yearly with patients, Dedicated patients benefit from average time with doctor exceeding 200 minutes annually. The more doctors see their patients, the better they know them. And the better they know them, the better chance they have of helping them stay healthy by catching small issues before they turn into big ones.

Important personalized care benefits for Dedicated patients include:

  • Door-to-doctor transportation, if necessary.
  • Having his/her Dedicated primary care physician’s cell phone number for timely help.
  • Walk-in appointments.
  • Unlimited visits.
  • On-site cardiology, medication dispensing, imaging, labs, acupuncture, and more.
  • Healthy lifestyle classes.
  • Almost all costs of care paid by Medicare, Medicaid and Medicare Advantage insurance.

About ChenMed

For seniors most in need of care, high-quality health care often is beyond reach. ChenMed brings concierge-style medicine — and better health outcomes — to the neediest populations. ChenMed is a privately owned medical, management and technology company that operates more than 60 primary care medical practices for seniors in Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia. Its brands include Chen Senior Medical Center, Dedicated Senior Medical Center, and JenCare Senior Medical Center.

Results of its high-touch approach to primary care are impressive, as illustrated in the Modern Healthcare cover story (Oct. 20, 2018), which reports, “Indeed, ChenMed’s approach has resulted in 50 percent fewer hospital admissions compared with a standard primary-care practice, 28 percent lower per-member costs and significantly higher use of evidence-based medications.” Inspired by ChenMed chairman and founder James Chen, M.D., Ph.D., the company has been serving low-to-moderate-income seniors with multiple complex chronic conditions for over 30 years.

Shopping For A Better Health Or Drug Plan Could Save Hundreds of Dollars, Says The Senior Citizens League

https://www.prweb.com/

Mary Johnson
The Senior Citizens League Policy Analyst

“It’s very important to compare all your health and drug plan options to find your lowest-costing coverage,” Johnson says.

Making the effort to check health and prescription drug coverage during the Medicare Open Enrollment Period, October 15th through December 7th, can pay off in significant savings for retirees, says The Senior Citizens League (TSCL). “The job does not have to be overwhelming,” says Mary Johnson, a Medicare and Social Security policy analyst for The Senior Citizens League. “Free one-on-one counseling is available in every area of the country to check coverage options and to switch to other health or drug plans when a better choice is available,” Johnson says. “Checking coverage is especially important since the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment for 2020 is just 1.6 percent, and will only raise an average benefit of $1,460 by about $23 per month.

According to research by Johnson, prescription drug costs vary significantly between drug plans — by the hundreds or even thousands of dollars — even for common generics. Unlike other services, Medicare does not negotiate drug prices on behalf of beneficiaries. The plan with the lowest-priced drug can be hundreds or even thousands of dollars less than the highest cost plan for the very same drug. Yet the majority of Medicare beneficiaries rarely shop for their best drug plan during Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment Period. Consequently, Medicare beneficiaries in Part D and Medicare Advantage plans overpay for their prescription medications even though less expensive, high quality plan choices are available.

The drugs covered by each plan can vary dramatically, and plans frequently push drugs into a higher formulary tiers which are more expensive, unbeknownst to even the most conscientious consumers. “That can result in a drug price shock next year at the pharmacy counter, unless you nip that in the bud right now,” says Johnson.

Since the start of Medicare Part D in 2006, Johnson has volunteered to help friends, neighbors and family members compare Part D plans and switch to new plans when better choices are available. Doing so often results in substantial savings on drug prices —sometimes hundreds of dollars, lower premiums, and better access to brand and pricey drugs.

How should Medicare beneficiaries prepare for Open Enrollment? Here’s a checklist from The Senior Citizens League:

1.    Review: By now, people covered by Medicare Part D or Medicare Advantage plans should have received an Annual Notice of Changes for 2020 from their current plan. In addition to changes to the premiums, the notice will explain increases, if any, in the deductible, copayments and coinsurance. The notice will tell you where to find information about the pharmacies in the drug plan’s network, and it will refer to “the drug list” or plan formulary of covered drugs which usually can be found online or requested from the plan. “What the notice does not include is a list of the drugs you currently take, the tiers that your drugs will be on in 2020, whether coverage has been dropped for any of your drugs in 2020, or what those drugs will cost if co-insurance is charged,” Johnson says. “Plans will provide most of that information, but it requires calling your plan directly and speaking to someone who can estimate the cost of your drugs in 2020. Once you have this information, it’s very important to compare all your health and drug plan options to find your lowest-costing coverage,” Johnson says.

2.    Gather and write legibly: Gather all of the drugs you currently take and carefully make a list, printing the name of the drug, dosage, quantity taken per day, and quantity required per month. Do this for each drug taken. Make sure your writing is legible. Type it into a Word document and print it out if possible. Keep this list on file where you can find it easily. Not only will you need it to compare drug plans, it’s handy to take with you on each visit to your doctor.

3.    Get free, unbiased assistance from a Medicare counselor: You can get great help from a local Medicare benefit counselor who provides free one-on-one counseling through State Health Insurance Programs (SHIPs). Local contact information can be found at: https://www.shiptacenter.org. Call and make appointment now, because Open Enrollment will take more time than usual this year. The Medicare Drug Plan Finder comparison tool which counselors use to compare drug plans and estimate costs has recently been re-designed. “It’s likely to take longer than usual to sort through plans and determine the best choice for clients while all of us are learning how to use the new system,” Johnson says.

4.    Narrow your choices and contact the prospective drug plans directly to confirm details: Once you have picked out three or so plans that look like your best bets, contact the plans directly to confirm the details. This includes coverage of all your drugs, estimated co-pays and co-insurance, which pharmacies participate and other questions you may have.

5.    Switch plans by going through the Medicare website: It’s better to switch plans through the Medicare website than trying to do so directly with the insurer. This way Medicare will make sure your previous plan unenrolls you by the end of the year and your new coverage begins on January 1, 2020 with the new plan. Your SHIP Medicare benefits counselor can help you do this.

Weigh Less Louisville launches Louisville’s only European-Style Natural Weight Loss Program

weight loss center Weigh Less Louisville

Weigh Less Louisville CEO Jeff Rosum

We are excited to offer a program that is actually new and different. No one in Louisville currently offers this type of method. Because it’s all natural, we are probably the only weight loss clinic in Louisville that is able to treat children.

The founders of Optimum Health have announced the opening of their Louisville weight loss clinic, Weigh Less Louisville. The new office opening is in line with the practice’s goal of making health solutions easily accessible to as many people as possible. The clinic is the only provider of the European-style natural weight loss program in the whole of Louisville.

“As a whole, Europeans are generally healthier and don’t suffer from the same rates of obesity as we Americans do. This is what droves us to Europe to study the Europeans lifestyle and their practices of healthy living. We don’t use pills, injections, or surgery. Everything we offer is 100% natural and sustainable.” said Rosum, CEO of Weigh Less Louisville.

The co-founders of Weigh Less Louisville, Jeff Rosum and David Seastedt are published authors on the subject of weight loss and have been invited to speak all over the country on behalf of their natural European weight loss program.

“We are excited to offer a program that is actually new and different. No one in Louisville currently offers this type of method. Because it’s all natural, we are probably the only weight loss clinic in Louisville that is able to treat children. Already we’ve been getting calls from parents seeking help for their children. Previous to the opening of Weigh Less Louisville, there were very few options available in Louisville for children. We are filling that void.” Said Seastedt, co-founder of Weigh Less Louisville.

Right Hand Foundation Launches to Support and Uplift Underserved Communities in Atlanta

News Image

Right Hand Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to aiding families in unstable living conditions, launched last week in Atlanta to support underserved communities, specifically Atlanta-based single mothers and their children. Founded by Courtney Stewart, the manager of Grammy-nominated artist Khalid, Right Hand Foundation provides single mothers and children long-term housing, educational programs and the tools necessary to prepare them for lifelong success. In addition to housing, the foundation offers educational programs that include financial planning, workforce training, health and wellness training, and home transition support to help create a sustainable lifestyle for these women and their families.

Stewart is creating these “Right Hand havens” by purchasing properties in various Atlanta neighborhoods and revitalizing the houses, outfitting them with modern appliances and making them comfortable, rent-free homes for a family to use while they get back on their feet. The foundation’s first property in Historic College Park was recently completed and its newest tenant has plans to move in soon. After some time there, the family will be moved to a property where they will pay minimal rent and eventually, with assistance from the Right Hand team, move on to housing that is within their means.

“Atlanta is my hometown and to see these communities really suffering was something that resonated with me and I felt the drive and need to assist however I could,” says Stewart. “I have always enjoyed investing in the Atlanta community whether that’s with my time or investing in properties. Revitalizing the houses and using them to help those that need it seemed like the logical solution to blend my passions of real estate and giving back to the community that I love. Right Hand Foundation is the first step in a long journey for these women, and through the holistic approach we take, we are enabling them to become self-sufficient members of the community.”

Right Hand Foundation is not Stewart’s first experience in philanthropy. He has been supporting local Atlanta shelters since 2015 and earlier this year helped Khalid launch his own foundation, The Great Khalid Foundation, an education and arts focused initiative for communities in need. Most recently, The Great Khalid Foundation and the Right Hand Foundation hosted a benefit concert in Khalid’s hometown of El Paso, Texas, for the victims and families of the August 3 mass shooting. The concert, “Khalid & Friends: A Night for Suncity,” raised $500,000 for the El Paso Community Fund.

In order to ensure the right tenants find homes, Stewart is partnering closely with local nonprofits to find families who are a good fit for the program. Through an application process, the tenants will be referred to Right Hand Foundation and begin receiving the assistance they need. On October 10, in conjunction with Homelessness Awareness Day, the foundation hosted a private launch event in honor of their first long-term housing project being completed with notable attendees including Senate candidate Teresa Tomlinson, R&B musician Bobby V, and Linda Wolfe of The Great Khalid Foundation, among others. Photos and interviews are available upon request.

ABOUT RIGHT HAND FOUNDATION:

Right Hand Foundation provides single mothers and children with long-term housing, educational programs and infrastructure to prepare them for independent sustainability. Taking this holistic approach to supporting families in unstable living conditions is critical to preventing homelessness and putting families on a path to thrive. Right Hand Foundation works in underserved communities to uplift and guide future generations. The Foundation plans to build Right Hand “Havens” in communities throughout the country.

ABOUT COURTNEY STEWART:

As founder of Right Hand Management Group and Right Hand Foundation and co-founder of Keep Cool Records, Courtney Stewart leverages a 360-degree approach to all aspects of his business and philanthropy. By sharing a similar spirit and vision to his clients and the causes he supports, the artist manager, record label executive, and humanitarian maximizes every opportunity for success from all angles. This ability to align with artists and collaborate closely not only fostered the breakout of five-time GRAMMY® Award-nominated superstar Khalid, but it also cemented Stewart among the industry’s future leaders recognized on Billboard’s prestigious “40 Under 40” and named as one of Variety Magazines 2018’s Hitmakers.

“The extension of the Bonduelle brand with the new Bonduelle Fresh Picked™ Gourmet Entrée Salads was the perfect opportunity to take what we’re known for – fresh, convenient salads on-the-go – and take it up a notch to appeal to a consumer looking for something beyond the familiar,” said Bonduelle Fresh Americas Vice President of Marketing, Priscila Stanton. “We wanted to challenge the status quo of prepared salads to bring a bit of indulgence to our recipes with premium ingredients you won’t find in other ready-to-eat salads, such as Manzanilla Spanish green olives, shaved aged parmesan or crispy cornbread crumble.”

Each Bonduelle Fresh Picked™ Gourmet Entrée Salad comes ready-to-eat (and customizable) with flavorful toppings separated for optimum freshness, crunch and taste with a bed of fresh greens, such as baby greens, romaine or arugula. Dressings such as apple cider vinaigrette and creamy avocado make for an irresistible combination.

Additionally, the square bowl features the Fresh Air Seal™ process, which extends the shelf life of the salads without preservatives, so they stay fresher longer, allowing health-conscious shoppers the confidence to stock up for the week in just one grocery trip.

Fresh Picked Gourmet Entrée Salads are now available in the produce aisle of Albertsons, Safeway, Vons and Pavilions stores on the West Coast with plans to expand distribution nationally. The salads are available in five varieties:
