NOLS Announces Winter Wilderness Travel Adventures for Adults that Teach Serious Outdoor Skills from Patagonia to Wyoming Backcountry

https://www.prweb.com/

Travelers gain sea kayaking skills navigating Patagonia’s coastline and immerse in local culture on NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) 14-day expedition (photo by Jordan Cranch/NOLS).

This winter, NOLS is challenging adults with an array of skill-building expeditions, including kayaking on Chile’s coastal fjords.

Experience has become a travel must-have in recent years with immersive travel topping trend lists. “The hottest souvenir to bring back from a trip is a new skill … enriching [travelers’] lives beyond the trip,” TripAdvisor declared in its 2019 trend report, while Conde Nast Traveler coined the name “Intrepid Journeys” for these “more challenging adventures” characterized by “embracing fears, experiencing discomfort and taking on ambitious physical activities.” And where better to search out the ultimate in transformative, experiential travel adventure than NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School), the leader in wilderness education for more than 50 years.

This winter, NOLS is challenging adults with an array of skill-building expeditions, including the opportunity to escape grey cityscapes for blue waters while kayaking on Chile’s coastal fjords. The 14-day Patagonia Sea Kayaking Expedition is one NOLS adventure geared toward individuals 23 years and older. Offered Feb. 21- Mar. 5, 2020, the course not only transforms beginners into confident paddlers, but will also help develop leadership abilities and cultural competency.

This immersive travel opportunity unlocks some of Chile’s wildest landscapes to explore, including Patagonia’s lush temperate rainforest, abundant waterfalls and even glimpses of the distant glaciers that carved this spectacular region. Knowledgeable instructors help travelers master the fundamentals of paddling. And as the course makes its way along the coast, travelers will also have the opportunity to visit coastal communities and learn about their way of life – and will leave Chile with sharpened leadership and communication skills as well as an appreciation for the dynamic wind and sea conditions of the area.

Additional adult winter courses provide a variety of available destinations, dates and skills. Also in February, a week-long Baja Coastal Sailing course offers another way to reconnect with the sea in winter. Beginning with the basics, this expedition is perfect for the novice sailor looking to get away from the cold and spend days exploring quiet sea coves and relaxing on a beach under the stars. And the New Zealand Sailing adventure, Nov. 23 – Dec. 6, 2019, offers travelers the opportunity to learn diverse skills in a remote coastal landscape rich with unique-to-New Zealand wildlife. Both courses emphasize sailing skills and seamanship while also helping strengthen leadership, communication and decision-making skills.

For those who’d rather embrace than flee winter’s snow and cold, NOLS offers a 12-day Winter Backcountry Touring Adventure in the mountains of Wyoming with three offerings beginning December 29 and February 2 and 16. Starting at the Grand Targhee Ski resort, travelers learn the basics of avalanche assessment before heading into the backcountry of the Tetons, where skiing or snowboarding on fresh powder and winter ecology are on tap. At night, retreat to yurts and self-built snow shelters.

Although NOLS – founded in 1965 by legendary mountaineer Paul Petzoldt – is perhaps best known for its famously rugged gap-year and travel-abroad expeditions for students, all of these winter trips are part of a series of expeditions called “Prime,” grounded in the same philosophy of building high-level outdoor and leadership skill sets while reveling in personal growth and fun, but designed for adults 23 and over. Tuition for the four winter courses ranges from $2,100 to $5,490 per person for 8- to 14-day adventures.

About NOLS:

NOLS (National Outdoor Leadership School) is the world’s leading wilderness school. A nonprofit based in Lander, Wyoming, the school provides students the opportunity to step forward – whether on an expedition, wilderness medicine or custom course. Students of all ages graduate from their courses prepared to lead their communities in a changing world. Graduates have a lifelong desire for leadership, commitment to continued skills development, and ongoing education. Since 1965, NOLS has embraced and explored the unknown through outdoor and classroom-based experiences. To learn more about NOLS, call 800.710.6657 or visit http://www.nols.edu.

BrightFarms To Build Next World-Class Sustainable Greenhouse Farm in Henderson County, North Carolina

https://www.prweb.com/

BrightFarms will expand into North Carolina with a new 280,000 sq. ft. hydroponic greenhouse.

Today’s consumers are searching for produce that’s fresher, safer and responsibly grown. It’s the reason that locally grown food has become the #1 purchase driver in produce for supermarkets.

BrightFarms, the No. 1 brand of locally grown packaged salads, will expand into North Carolina with a new 280,000 sq. ft. hydroponic greenhouse. Once complete, the farm will create 54 “green-collar” sustainable agriculture jobs that all pay a living wage and offer industry-leading health benefits and training.

The new greenhouse will grow a variety of salad greens and herbs including spring mix, spinach, baby kale, romaine, arugula and a variety of other innovative greens not typically seen in traditional supermarkets.

By growing produce close to its consumers, BrightFarms delivers its local, pesticide-free baby greens to supermarkets in as little as 24 hours of harvest, about a week faster than leafy greens grown on the West Coast. By growing indoors, the farms create ideal growing environments for plants to thrive and to maximize food safety.

The new greenhouse will add to BrightFarms’ network of local, sustainable greenhouse farms; serving local markets including Charlotte, N.C.; Winston-Salem, N.C; Greenville, S.C.; Spartanburg, S.C.; and Atlanta. Existing farms already in operation are in Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Illinois.

“Today’s consumers are searching for produce that’s fresher, safer and responsibly grown. It’s the reason that locally grown food has become the #1 purchase driver in produce for supermarkets,” said Steve Platt, BrightFarms CEO. “We are incredibly grateful for the support from Governor Cooper and the North Carolina Department of Commerce and look forward to bringing local, pesticide-free leafy greens to North Carolina and neighboring states.”

“This is exciting news for Henderson County,” said N.C. Senator Chuck Edwards. “We welcome BrightFarms’ new jobs and investment to Appalachia’s agricultural community.”

“BrightFarms has made a tremendous investment in our state,” said N.C. Representative Jake Johnson. “I know they will be very successful in Henderson County and the workforce is ready to support them.”

In addition to the North Carolina Commerce and Economic Development Partnership, key partners in the project include the North Carolina General Assembly, North Carolina Community College System, Blue Ridge Community College, Henderson County, Agribusiness Henderson County, City of Hendersonville and Conserving Carolina.

Nike Tennis Camps Wraps Up Another Excellent Year, Summer 2019

Nike Tennis Camps wraps up a successful 2019 season.

Nike Tennis Camps wraps up a successful 2019 season.

Coming off a very successful year, Nike Tennis Camps looks to continue the momentum of 2019 by providing quality, fun tennis camps for campers to return to year after year and provide new locations for junior and adult tennis players to improve their game.

As a staple division of the company, Nike Tennis Camps looked to build on its long-standing overnight tennis camps that have been running for more than 10 years including: Amherst College, Lawrenceville School, USD, Duke, Stanford and Lake Tahoe at Granlibakken Resort. Other strong locations such as MIT, Minnesota and Michigan State all saw significant spikes in camper popularity.

While the growth of top tier, long standing locations was a large focus, Nike Tennis Camps also looked to grow their day tennis camp market. The additions of Fayetteville High School, Middlesex School, Quail Ridge Country Club, Jack Kramer Club and Agawam Hunt Club were solid additions that look to have strong growth in 2020. Quail Ridge/Middlesex led the charge by bringing in over 375 campers that left players and parents looking forward to next year, “Great team, the coaches are professional, they support and nature my kid’s passions. My boy’s skills got sharpened and of course, he had a lot fun. We will be back next year” says a parent of a Quail Ridge camper.

Nike Tennis Camps also introduced three new programs to their summer junior tennis programs this year: U10 (10 and Under Tennis), Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) and USTA Tournament Challenge (offered at Amherst College).

U10 locations were able to create groupings for under aged campers to use lower compression balls (red, orange and green dot) so they are easier to hit, allowing kids to get to the ball and develop optimal swing patterns. Nike Tennis Camps and UTR have developed a special partnership where campers that are enrolled for camps at a specific camp location get to create or develop their UTR score. UTR has become increasingly popular for tennis players to improve their skills and evaluate their matches.

The USTA Tournament Challenge at Amherst College was a one-of-a-kind program where campers were able to enroll for a 2-week camp. The first week was dedicated to mental and skill development to prepare for the tournament weekend. Players then got to experience competing in an official USTA tournament over the weekend. The second week is devoted to further fine-tuning skills based on what was charted during the USTA matches. When asked about her daughter’s experience, a parent nothing but positive comments, “My daughter had another wonderful week at camp. She loves the on-court time with coaches who care about her and want to help her improve.”

Coming off a very successful year, Nike Tennis Camps looks to continue the momentum of 2019 by providing quality, fun tennis camps for campers to return to year after year and provide new locations for junior and adult tennis players to improve their game. They will look to add more adult locations, offer more junior tennis camps in the winter and spring, and continue to build the day camp business.

Campers, Parents and Coaches interested in receiving more information regarding 2020 Nike Tennis Camps can visit http://www.ussportscamps.com/tennis or give us a call at 1-800-645-3226.

Pelican Water Systems In-Home Services Now Offered in Oklahoma City

News Image

Pelican Water Systems, now a part of Pentair, is delighted to expand its signature in-home services to Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and the surrounding areas of Edmond, Bethany, Yukon, and Moore. With a simple phone call, residents interested in Pelican water filtration and softening systems can schedule a complimentary consultation from a certified water expert. Pelican Water in-home water consultants travel to your home in a mobile retail center that contains everything necessary to test and treat your home drinking water. The mobile retail center includes a stocked mini showroom, a water test station, and industry-leading Pelican Water products to remedy individual water quality problems.

Oklahoma City sources its public drinking water from seven distinct surface water reservoirs in the surrounding five counties, including Canton Lake in northwest Oklahoma and Sardis Lake in southeastern Oklahoma. The high concentration of minerals in the surrounding landscape contributes to water hardness in city residences, and a combination of regional drought and aging infrastructure can affect water quality. When Pelican Water experts visit a home, they take the time to test the water sample for a variety of cosmetic and quality concerns that are common in and around Oklahoma City.

Approximately 70,000 homes around Oklahoma utilize private wells, which are not monitored by the EPA. An in-home service appointment represents a holistic testing and treatment solution for families with private wells or municipal drinking water. Pelican Water trained professionals discuss budget, water quality, and lifestyle with each customer to arrive at the most effective and affordable water treatment system for their needs. Experts correctly size and securely install a new system in just three days so Oklahoma City residents can rest easy with higher-quality, great-tasting water.

Oklahoma City families concerned about their general water quality can now call and schedule a free in-home consultation. All installations in Oklahoma City are performed with white-glove service, and every Pelican Water in-home consultation is backed by a 90-day labor guarantee. For a full list of locations where in-home services are offered, visit the Pelican Water in-home services page.

About Pelican Water Systems

Pelican Water Systems provides professional knowledge and leading technologies in whole house water filtration, countertop water filtration systems, UV bacteria disinfection systems, and salt-free water conditioning systems. Pelican Water’s mission is to help families enjoy cleaner, safer, better-tasting water in their homes in an environmentally friendly way. Pelican Water is proud to offer under-counter reverse osmosis systems that are small enough for practical use in RVs and marine vessels. Acquired by Pentair in February 2019, Pelican Water continues to be the global market leader in salt-free water treatment technology. Team Novo Nordisk – World’s First All-Diabetes Pro Cycling team

https://www.prweb.com/

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes professional cycling team, will race its eighth season with a roster of 16 athletes from 12 countries.

“2019 has been a banner year for the team. It has been a season where teamwork clicked race after race, month after month, and we are looking forward to building upon this momentum with ambitious objectives for 2020,” Team Novo Nordisk CEO and Co-Founder Phil Southerland said.

Team Novo Nordisk, the world’s first all-diabetes professional cycling team, will race its eighth season with a roster of 16 athletes from 12 countries. Two new riders, Hamish Beadle (NZL) and Gerd de Keijzer (NED), will be part of Team Novo Nordisk’s 2020 roster.

“2019 has been a banner year for the team. It has been a season where teamwork clicked race after race, month after month, and we are looking forward to building upon this momentum with ambitious objectives for 2020,” Team Novo Nordisk CEO and Co-Founder Phil Southerland said. “As we race around the globe, we get the chance to work directly with the diabetes community and this impact is proving priceless. Witnessing those moments gives us a great sense of pride and it is humbling to receive that support and gratitude from the diabetes community. Together we are changing diabetes.”

To become a member of Team Novo Nordisk, all athletes must have type 1 diabetes. Since its launch in December 2012, the organization has focused heavily on identifying and developing endurance athletes from around the world with diabetes, building junior and development squads currently totaling 30 athletes. Both of Team Novo Nordisk’s new athletes are products of its development program. Beadle’s selection was announced in September.

In addition to Beadle and de Keijzer, Team Novo Nordisk proudly announces it has extended contracts with standout riders Andrea Peron (ITA) and Charles Planet (FRA). Planet’s extension was announced earlier this month.

“Andrea had a nice season and I am proud of his results along with his positive attitude. I believe his results were partly due to the addition of Peter Kusztor, who has a tremendous ability to rally the guys around protecting Andrea,” Team Novo Nordisk General Manager Vassili Davidenko said. “We’ve known Andrea for nearly a decade, and he has always delivered on his dreams. He dreams of winning a professional race; hopefully, we can make that dream come true together.”

Peron helped lead Team Novo Nordisk to its most successful season to date by earning nine top 10 finishes including third on Stage 1 and eighth overall at the Tour of Estonia, eighth on Stage 7 of the Tour of California, and eighth on Stage 3 of the Tour de Pologne. The last two results serve as Team Novo Nordisk’s first top 10s at World Tour-caliber races.

“By far my proudest memory of the year were the two top 10s. I always enjoy a race where the start list is the best in the sport,” Peron said. “It was a big year for me, both with strong results and with the birth of my son. All of this served as a boost and I want to thank my coach, Federico Fontana, who also deserves credit for this season.”

While new to the roster, the 25-year-old de Keijzer raced three seasons with Team Novo Nordisk’s pro team from 2014-2017. The Dutchman briefly stepped away from the professional ranks before returning in 2019 to Team Novo Nordisk’s development squad to gain experience. Based on his results, he earned a spot back on the pro team for the 2020 season.

“It is extremely hard to earn a professional contract in bike racing, so I’m proud of this. For the 2019 season, I had one goal and that was to show the best me both on and off the bike. It was probably one of the best years I’ve had in cycling and I can’t wait to continue this growth into next year,” de Keizer said. “I spent time with the development squad years ago and being back this past season made it clear how it has grown in professionalism and strength. All of Team Novo Nordisk raise each other to a higher level and that’s what you need within a successful organization.”

This season, the Team Novo Nordisk men’s professional squad competed in four World Tour races: UAE Tour, Milan-San Remo, Tour of California and Tour de Pologne. The squad wore jerseys at each of the World Tour stage races and placed a historic four riders in the breakaway at Milan-San Remo.

Across 24 races in 15 countries, Team Novo Nordisk had its most successful season to date including two top 10s at World Tour races, podium results at the Tour of Estonia and Tour of China I, and more than two dozen top 10s overall. Standout results include Planet earning the Most Active Rider jersey at the Tour of Pologne, the team’s first overall World Tour jersey in its seven-year history. He also wore the Intermediate Sprint jersey for four days at the UAE Tour, the King of the Mountains jersey for three days at the Tour of Pologne, and the Most Courageous Rider jersey following the opening stage of the Tour of California. David Lozano (ESP) won the overall King of the Mountains jersey at the Tour of Taiyuan while Sam Brand (GBR) wore the King of the Mountains jersey for one stage at the Tour of Estonia.

“Looking ahead, I want to see some victories. We’ve gotten a taste of success this year with a record number of podium appearances, which has translated into a massive confidence boost throughout the entire organization,” Southerland said. “From a scientific standpoint, we had a big year of data collection, and now we can make some small interventions that we believe will help level the playing field for our riders. These small gains could be real difference-makers for the 2020 season, which serves as the 99th year since the discovery of insulin. It is a big year for us, a big year for people with diabetes, and it is our chance to do a big leadout so that 2021 can be the best year for everyone affected by diabetes around the world.”

The full 2020 roster includes:

Hamish Beadle – NZL

Oliver Behringer – SUI

Mehdi Benhamouda – FRA

Sam Brand – GBR

Stephen Clancy – IRL

Gerd de Keijzer – NED

Joonas Henttala – FIN

Lead Singer of Five Finger Death Punch, Ivan L. Moody’s Health and Wellness Company, Moody’s Medicinals, Debuts New Product Online and In-Person at The Grove in Las Vegas

Photo advertisement of Moody's Medicinals featuring Ivan Moody

Ivan Moody for Moody’s Medicinals

Moody’s Medicinals specializing in both cannabidiol (“CBD”) and non-CBD health and wellness products launched its first trailblazing line of high-quality products in June 2019. Today, they announced that a new range of sugar-free AM and PM shots, as well as a new personal CBD diffuser pen that can be enjoyed in three new formulas are now available online at moodysmedicinals.com. They will also be available in-person at an exclusive launch event in Las Vegas, attended by Ivan L. Moody.

The three new formulas for the personal diffuser pen are: Relax (made with organic blackberry and blueberry waters), Energize (made with organic grapefruit and orange waters) and Silver Bullet (made with menthol and mint with vitamin B12 and ginseng).

The Moody’s Medicinals AM Shot is a refreshing Raspberry Lemonade flavor and the PM Shot is a calming Lemon Iced Tea flavor. Both shots are certified pure CBD.

Ivan Moody realized that Moody’s Medicinals, as a health and wellness innovator, could provide better ingredients, quality, and potency across its products. “Moody’s Medicinals was created to support me whether I’m on the road, at a shoot, writing music, or just living life. Everyone knows that life is demanding, and that’s what Moody’s Medicinals helps the most with – life,” said Moody, creator of Moody’s Medicinals.

Five Finger Death Punch’s world-renowned lead vocalist, Ivan L. Moody, created the company because taking CBD helped him personally manage his anxiety symptoms, PTSD, and OCD. However, he noticed a gap in the marketplace concerning the extreme amounts of additives the competitors used. He set out to deliver a variety of CBD & non-CBD health and wellness products that do not contain sugars, alcohols, and unnecessary additives.

The official launch event for the new products will be at The Grove (4647 Swenson St, Las Vegas, NV 89119) on Saturday, November 2 at 1:00 p.m. This corresponds with the kickoff for Five Finger Death Punch’s U.S. headlining arena tour (through December 15 before heading overseas in the new year). The best-selling rock band’s two exclusive shows in Las Vegas are on November 1 and 2 at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino (4455 Paradise Rd., Las Vegas, NV 89169).

“Whether it’s our AM and PM shots to help you start and finish the day calm and focused or if you use it to tame anxiety like I do, they’re special products. They keep me sustained when I’m unable to eat on a fixed schedule when I’m on the road, and anything that helps you manage your appetite is an obvious plus,” added Moody.

All of the Moody’s Medicinals product lines, including the new products, are available for purchase online at MoodysMedicinals.com.

The company continues to comply in full with all federal, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations as the company develops its CBD/hemp extract product lines. Moody’s Medicinals is a registered trademark of ILM Distribution, Inc.

Addressing the Physical and Emotional Tolls of the Pigment-Loss Condition

Chris Byrne, RPA-C

In most cases, vitiligo appears in corresponding patches on both sides of the body – “generalized” or “nonsegmental” vitiligo. However, cases of “segmental” vitiligo can also occur, affecting one side alone.

Jon Hamm attributes the blotches of white skin that appeared on his hands to a megadose of stress: He had recently taken on a big role – playing the uber-alpha drinking, smoking, philandering Don Draper in the smash hit Mad Men. In his thirties at the time, Hamm developed vitiligo. “It starts without warning,” notes Chris Byrne, a certified registered physician’s assistant specializing in dermatology with Advanced Dermatology PC. “Stress combined with an underlying autoimmune condition may trigger its onset.”

A “convergence theory,” says the nonprofit Vitiligo Research Foundation, could explain why up to two percent of us suddenly start to lose melanocytes: Some combination of stress, toxins, disease, and genes causes the death of those pigment-producing skin cells, leaving behind patches of white skin, whose appearance is especially noticeable against darker skin tones.

In most cases, vitiligo appears in corresponding patches on both sides of the body – “generalized” or “nonsegmental” vitiligo. However, cases of “segmental” vitiligo can also occur, affecting one side alone. The American Academy of Dermatology classifies those two types further: localized vitiligo affects a small area; generalized vitiligo progresses to more widespread patches; and universal vitiligo, the most rare, causes almost all skin to lose pigment.

“As with Jon Hamm,” observes Byrne, “it commonly begins on the hands. Once begun, generalized vitiligo typically starts and stops, seemingly at random. Unfortunately, research has not yet uncovered a vitiligo ‘off’ switch.”

“In most cases,” continues Byrne, “vitiligo does not cause other physical symptoms. But the emotional and psychological tolls can be severe. Early diagnosis can give patients the greatest access to treatment choices.”

In those rare cases of universal vitiligo, patients may opt to lighten the limited remaining pigmented skin. However, most patients – if they choose to treat localized or generalized cases – elect a means of adding color.

With that in mind, Byrne makes the following suggestions.

6 Answers to Help Choose a Vitiligo Treatment

1. When does makeup make sense? “Half of vitiligo cases start under the age of 21,” notes Byrne. “For children with the condition, adding color with makeup, skin dye, or self-tanners can be healthy choices, as they do not have the possible side effects of other treatments. This may also appeal to those who want a temporary, ‘as needed’ approach without side effects.”

2. What about topical corticosteroids? ”These are most effective when used early, before there is widespread pigment loss,” says Byrne. “In particular, treatment may help repigment areas of the face. Some caveats include the need to monitor for side effects, as skin atrophy can occur when used for more than a year.”

3. How can light and lasers help? “Phototherapy – UVA and UVB treatments – can help add color to more extensive areas,” explains Byrne. “For small areas, lasers can be particularly effective, with seventy percent seeing improvement. Patients should be fully informed regarding outcome, as color gain can gradually fade.”

4. What can combination therapy do? “‘PUVA’ refers to the use of psoralen – either in topical or oral form – in conjunction with UVA light treatment,” describes Byrne. “This is a long-term treatment, typically involving weekly sessions for a year. Up to seventy-five percent of the time, there is pigment gain on the face and body, including the torso and upper arms and legs. With this approach, it’s important to monitor for side effects, including vision changes. And sun protection is essential.”

5. When can surgery be considered? “Transplanting pigmented skin,” says Byrne, “can be effective but should only be considered for adults with ‘stable’ cases – that is, no pigment loss for at least six months. And surgery also carries the risk of side effects.”

6. Are new treatments on the way? “This is a hopeful time,” notes Byrne. “New topical treatments are showing promise in current research. We had exciting news this summer regarding the topical agent ruxolitinib, and the third phase of its clinical trial is now underway.”

“Vitiligo patients,” Byrne emphasizes, “need the support of caring specialists who can empower them to make informed choices.”

Over 3,400 runners from 17 different states and six different countries came together to participate in the Surfing Madonna Beach Run, which was sponsored in part by Herman Cook Volkswagen of Encinitas.

The Surfing Madonna Beach Run, which took place on Saturday, October 26, 2019, in Encinitas, California, was a resounding success for all involved, allowing the annual event to keep its title as the “Largest Race on Sand” from the Guinness Book of World Records.

Over 3,400 runners from 17 different states and six different countries came together to participate in the race, which was sponsored in part by Herman Cook Volkswagen of Encinitas.

Among those runners were multiple participants from countries such as Mexico, Canada and England. The runners were assisted throughout the day by a dedicated and hard-working group of 364 volunteers.

The runners enjoyed a scenic beach run of either 5 kilometers, 10 kilometers or 12 kilometers, starting at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas and then heading up the coast to Beacons Beach and Ponto Beach before heading south to Swami’s Beach.

Before the race started, participants were treated to two dances performed by the University of California San Diego dance team, which is ranked 10th in the nation.

After the race, participants were gifted a carved wood medal, a race shirt, a race mug and treats galore. They were also treated to a live performance by local Encinitas musicians, Bucket Ruckus.

Proceeds from the event are being used to support the Surfing Madonna Beach Run and its Oceans Project efforts to protect the coastline.

Those efforts are one of the main reasons Herman Cook Volkswagen chooses to sponsor the race, as everyone at the dealership is committed to supporting the local beach community and the efforts taking place to preserve the beauty and health of those beaches. Herman Cook VW is grateful to be a sponsor of the event and is proud of all the runners and spectators who came out to participate.
