AP Breaks Ground on the Aurora Family YMCA at Wheatlands

News Image

This project was possible with two metro districts, one designated recreation authority and a nonprofit to come together for the good of the community.

On a chilly afternoon on an empty lot, Adolfson & Peterson Construction (AP) – along with YMCA of Metropolitan Denver, the Wheatlands Park and Rec Authority, Barker Rinker Seacat Architecture (BRS), donors and community members – broke ground on the new Aurora Family YMCA at Wheatlands.

This 40,000-sf facility, designed by BRS, will directly support individuals and families with new and expanded Y programs for healthy living, aquatics safety, childcare, education and teen leadership. It will feature a wellness studio, group x studios, cycling studio, party and community room, competition pool and teen area.

“This afternoon we break ground on the Aurora Family YMCA at Wheatlands and we celebrate the vision, advocacy and commitment of everyone here and behind the scenes,” said Kimberly Armitage, VP of Strategic Growth and Membership for YMCA Metropolitan Denver. “This project was possible with two metro districts, one designated recreation authority and a nonprofit to come together for the good of the community. And, it shows how this unique partnership – one that has never happened in the state of Colorado – can venture outside the box and deliver a resource that is both positive and transformative.”

The Y will be a resource for all surrounding residents and will seek to help low-income and minority families to bolster health outcomes, reduce drop-out rates, improve academic success, and promote child safety.

Handtevy Launches Pediatric Resuscitation Software in Epic’s App Orchard Marketplace

Pediatric Emergency Standards, Inc. is pleased to announce that its award-winning pediatric resuscitation management software, Handtevy Hospital, is now available on Epic’s App Orchard Marketplace. Epic clients can take advantage of Handtevy Hospital, powered by SMART® and FHIR® technologies, to standardize resuscitation care, reduce medication dosing and administration errors, and improve clinician confidence when treating the critically ill or injured child.

“The initial moments of a resuscitation are when errors often occur, placing children at risk for uncoordinated and unsafe care,” said Peter Antevy M.D., CMO of Pediatric Emergency Standards Inc. “Rapid access to precise treatment information and real-time verification of high acuity medications is crucial when seconds matter and lives are at stake.”

The HIPAA compliant software runs natively within the EHR, displaying alongside Epic’s Code Narrator, automatically extracting patient specific data such as age, weight, and allergies. Handtevy delivers precise medication dosing and administration instructions that mirror the hospital’s formulary and standardizes patient care for the healthcare system. Interventions are rapidly recorded in real-time from a workstation computer or a mobile device using the streamlined platform.

Handtevy Hospital promotes patient safety along the continuum of care. It is the first-of-its-kind application to provide a time-stamped, comprehensive treatment summary, accessible in read-only format to all downstream clinical teams while the case is still in progress. This is reflective of the company’s core mission when it was founded a decade ago.

“Pediatric resuscitations are stressful for even the most skilled healthcare providers,” said Allison Antevy, CEO of Pediatric Emergency Standards Inc. “We are excited to support hospital teams by making their extremely difficult job easier and safer during a pediatric resuscitation.”

This partnership is a significant progression for the Handtevy platform as it creates a seamless linkage with one of the largest EHR vendors, used in thousands of hospitals across the country. Handtevy’s Integration with Epic follows the recent announcement of integration with Cerner Millennium®.

About Handtevy – Pediatric Emergency Standards, Inc.

Handtevy is a revolutionary pediatric resuscitation system that provides a customized integrated software solution to healthcare providers who treat acutely ill children or adults. The nationally acclaimed system is used in all 50 states by EMS and hospital systems and allows professionals to quickly and safely treat acutely ill children and adults with ease and confidence. Shamrock Sports & Entertainment teams up with Maine Tourism & Norway Savings Bank to present re-imagined Winter Festival, Carnaval ME

Portland’s Eastern Prom

“We welcome Carnaval ME to the world of winter festivals! As thousands of Mainers have enjoyed Carnaval de Quebec thru the decades, we look forward to collaborating with Carnaval ME to drive mutually rewarding promotion and experiences,” said Carnaval de Quebec Commercial Director Marie-Eve Jacob.

In the 1920s, thousands of visitors flocked to Portland to enjoy a winter spectacle of ice castles, sculptures, sled dogs, ski jumping and other outdoor festivities to celebrate the season. A century later, the party is back.

Shamrock Sports & Entertainment, in partnership with Maine Office of Tourism and Norway Savings Bank, will transform the Eastern Prom in Portland into a winter wonderland, with activities and attractions to appeal to Mainers and visitors alike. The inaugural 3 day festival, scheduled for January 30 through February 2, 2020.

The Carnaval Maine celebration kicks off with the Bicentennial Winter Ball on Thursday, January 30 to mark the 200th year of Maine’s statehood. Throughout the festival, art installations, illumination shows, a rail jam competition and special igloo soiree events will take place. Professional ice sculptors will wow the crowd with live events, offering a world-class experience of people of all ages. Bites and Brews will bring award-winning chefs and craft brewers together like Allagash and Luke’s Lobster for made-in-Maine pairings sure to delight the most discerning palates.

“Winter is an important season in Maine attracting nearly 6.5 million visitors and about $200 million in lodging sales alone. Combine that with the food, retail and recreational opportunities people come here to experience and the economic impact of winter tourism is significant,” said Steve Lyons, director of the Maine Office of Tourism. “We believe Carnaval Maine will be a new experience that will drive visitation and be an added boost to our winter economy.”

“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to provide support via our Presenting Partnership of Carnaval ME and specifically the Illumination experiences. Winter is particularly magical with snow-filled landscapes and exciting activities. The Carnaval Illumination Experience will bring color and joy to the Promenade. We look forward to playing a role in making Carnaval ME a memorable event for our growing communities,” said Patricia Weigel, President and CEO of Norway Savings Bank.

The tradition of celebrating Winter from the end of January till mid-February has been around for a long time. In Quebec City, the world’s snow capital, the first major winter carnival made its debut in 1894.

On the heels of a 2019 Portland Pops event on Portland’s Eastern prom featuring the beloved Portland Symphony Orchestra and recent news of partnership with PGA to bring the Live & Work in Maine Open to Falmouth Country Club in June of 2020, Carnaval ME becomes the 3rd annual event to be managed, owned, operated and marketed by Shamrock Signature, a division of Shamrock Sports & Entertainment focused on LIVE experiences. “At Shamrock Sports & Entertainment we are very excited to bring to life an epic event that will celebrate Maine being a State for All Seasons, contribute to the local economy and support our community of award winning artists, breweries and chefs to be enjoyed by locals and visitors alike,” said Shamrock CEO, Brian Corcoran.

New Study Led by Leading Spine Surgeons Lanman, Cuellar and Rasouli Shows Cervical Artificial Disc Replacement Safe in Outpatient Setting

Three of the nation’s preeminent spine surgeons, Drs. Todd Lanman, Jason Cuellar and Alexandre Rasouli, of Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles, served as the principal investigators in a new study published November 7 in the international peer-reviewed Spine journal.

The paper entitled ‘The Safety of Single and Multi-Level Cervical Total Disc Replacement in Ambulatory Surgery Centers’ evaluated the safety profile of single and multi-level cervical artificial disc replacement, known as ADR, performed in an outpatient setting.

All three leading medical professionals, Lanman, a spinal neurosurgeon, and Cuellar and Rasouli, orthopedic spine surgeons, investigated the increasing proportion of spine surgery performed in ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) vis-à-vis an analysis of consecutive cervical ADR surgeries over a 9-month period, including multi-level and revision.

The pre-, intra- and post-op data recorded during the study took into account age, gender, body mass index, tobacco use, the presence of diabetes, level and procedure, OR time, EBL, complications, discharge site, occurrence of re-operation, hospital admission or any medical complication or infection taking place over a 90-day period.

There were 147 patients who underwent 231 treated levels of ADR, including 71 single-level and 76 multi-level, or ADR in more than one disc level, comprised of 69 at two levels of the cervical spine, 6 at three levels and one at four levels.

The average age of those who participated in the study was 50, 71 of those patients were female, while 76 were males. None were insulin-dependent diabetics, four currently used tobacco, while 16 previously had used it. The average time of anesthesia was 88 minutes, and 90.3% of patients were discharged directly home, while nearly 10% went to an after-care facility.

The study authored by Lanman, Cuellar and Rasouli concluded that ADR surgeries are safe to perform in an Ambulatory Surgery Center, or outpatient setting, contingent upon an efficient surgical team and careful patient selection criteria.

The new study can be found here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/31703051

Named a ‘Leader in Health Care’ by the Los Angeles Business Journal, and dubbed one of the top doctors in his field in the L.A. Times, The Hollywood Reporter and Hemispheres Magazine, Dr. Lanman is well respected as one of the leading innovators in artificial or total disc replacement. He serves as the principal investigator on the majority of clinical trials leading to their FDA approvals, and was the first to pioneer Restorative Motion Surgery, returning patients to near or full mobility and motion, by replacing fusions with artificial disc devices.

A majority of his patients include A-level celebrities from the film, TV and theatrical worlds, as well as many sports players and business magnates.

He remains a clinical professor at UCLA for two decades, has published myriad peer-reviewed articles and chapters of books relating to spine medicine, and serves as a frequent medical educator and expert contributor in the media.

2019 AKTIV Against Cancer Benefit Raises a Record $100,000

AKTIV Against Cancer, the organization co-founded by legendary runner Grete Waitz, and Helle Aanesen, today announced that their fifth annual awards luncheon generated in excess of $100,000 in donations, the largest sum ever for the event.

AKTIV Against Cancer, the organization co-founded by legendary runner Grete Waitz, and Helle Aanesen, today announced that their fifth annual awards luncheon generated in excess of $100,000 in donations, the largest sum ever for the event. This year’s awards lunch was held at the New York Athletic Club on Wednesday November 14, and had author, television host, entrepreneur and philanthropist Chip Gaines as the recipient of the AKTIV Against Cancer Award. Gaines accepted the award in memory of the late elite runner Gabe Grunewald, who passed away earlier this year and had become close with Gaines and his wife Joanna. This year’s event was also hosted by motivational speaker, former American professional soccer player, winner of Survivor: Africa Ethan Zohn. Zohn is also a two-time cancer survivor and supporter of the organization.

“It’s bittersweet, for sure, but I was honored and humbled to receive this award. Gabe Grunewald made a lasting impression on everyone who knew her and I have no doubt her story will only continue to serve as an inspiration for others,” Gaines said. “I am determined to continue fighting this fight in her honor and doing my part to help further advance rare cancer research.”

Gaines is the co-founder of Magnolia, a Waco, Texas-based company he started with Joanna in 2003. In 2018, Chip launched Magnolia’s inaugural Silo District Marathon following a chance meeting with past AKTIV Against Cancer Inspiration Award recipient Grunewald. Since then, Chip has helped raise more than $1 million for the Brave Like Gabe Foundation – it is because of these philanthropic endeavors that AKTIV Against Cancer chose to honor Chip Gaines as the recipient of this year’s award.

In addition to the award to Gaines, AKTIV Against Cancer also honored two supporters for their work. Cancer survivor and advocate Aubrey Barr, who has run over 30 marathons with Fred’s Team, including the New York City Marathon and the Boston Marathon. Additionally, longtime Fred’s Team coach Jeff Rochford has trained and coached thousands of Fred’s Team runners across finish lines. Fred’s Team, named in honor of New York City Marathon co-founder Fred Lebow, is Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s running program, which has raised more than $85 million for cancer research since 1995.

The luncheon was supported by Discovery, adidas and the May and Samuel Rudin Family Foundation. Previous honorees of this award include Dr. Jordan Metzl & Kikkan Randall (2018), The Rudin Family & the late Gabriel Grunewald (2017), Meb Keflezighi (2016), and Mary Wittenberg (2015).

Terra Wellington’s Winter Wellness Guide

As the winter season settles in and the busy holidays ramp up, taking care of yourself might move to the back burner. If you have a packed schedule this time of year, it’s easy to think less and less about your own health. Whether it’s watching what you eat or getting enough rest, wintertime has its own healthy living challenges. To give you some winter wellness tips, we have some easy tips for navigating this new season.

A video accompanying this announcement is available at: https://youtu.be/Rx7BQXa7cdc

Telemedicine Can Help Your Family:

Staying well during the busy holiday and winter season includes hand washing on a regular basis. Also, a preventive tactic is to not touch your face. Both of these winter wellness behaviors are some of the simplest ways you can reduce the transmission of germs.

For hand washing, this means cleaning all surfaces of your hands for 20 seconds. You can practice washing your hands with your children so they know how to do it.

But if you or someone in your family does get sick, telemedicine can be helpful for things like the cold, flu, ear infections and other ailments.

For example, Hooray Health’s WellCall, a telemedicine service, is available 24/7, every day of the year. For $9.95 a month, you get access to board-certified doctors via phone or video in minutes. And the program is affordable and focuses on wellness. Members also have access to a discount prescription program, which can save you an average of 60 percent at your local pharmacy. And this is also great for that holiday travel because you can access a doctor right away from wherever you are. Currently (as of November 2019), you can also get two months free when you sign up for the year.

Self Care Matters For Staying Well:

According to the Mayo Clinic, stress can make you feel more tired, give you muscle tension, and cause headaches. It can also cause sleep problems.

But it’s important to set aside your own personal time, away from the busy holiday season, to wind down. Yoga, meditation, or massage can help with your winter wellness. Getting 8 hours of sleep at night is also helpful.

Now, if you do get sick with cough and congestion this time of year, you can feel stressed about losing a day of work or squeezing in holiday activities. So, again, look to take care of yourself.

Symptom relief medicine can give your body a break from the cough and congestion to help you power through your day. You could look to Robitussin’s new 12 Hour Tablets. You take one, convenient dose, of the extended release formula and receive 12 hours of symptom relieve from your cough and congestion. Of course, consult your doctor depending on your symptoms. But self care is really important, and it starts with taking care of your health.

Keep Moving During The Winter:

It’s really important to keep your body moving during the winter. You can change up your fitness routine and do new things to keep you motivated. Maybe it’s taking up yoga, going to the gym more often, downloading a fitness app and working out at home.

You should also consider taking a walk outdoors during the day to get the sunshine’s bright light for your body’s health. And winter sports are also an option, like skiing.

Now, for winter personal care, you do want to reduce your body’s wetness to help you stay warm. And to help you not get cold from your sweat, you can look for Ban’s Purely Gentle Roll On Antiperspirant Deodorant. This glides on clear and cuts down on underarm wetness for 24 hours. It’s also non-irritating and gentle on your skin. And it has a unique formula that actually breaks down the sweat so that you don’t have odor.

Exchange Physical Therapy Group & Liberty Humane Raise $100,000 for NJ’s 1st Mobile/Low-Cost Spay & Neuter Program

Physical Therapy Group in Jersey City raises $100,000.00 for local animal shelter

As a board member for Liberty Humane, I was able to see what a profoundly positive impact the low cost spay/neuter program we launched last year had on the residents of Jersey City & Hoboken” said Jaclyn Fulop, owner of Exchange Physical Therapy Group

Exchange Physical Therapy Group teamed up with Liberty Humane Society and raised over $100,000 for the non-profit animal shelter to further expand New Jersey’s first low-cost spay and neuter program that will serve Hudson County.

Exchange Physical Therapy Group with locations in Jersey City, Hoboken and Weehawken, hosted their second major fundraiser at Harborside JC last week, and through ticket sales and corporate donations raised $100,000 to maintain the service through the end of 2020. The November fundraiser is in addition to the $130,000 raised in 2018 to purchase the vehicle and provide for up front costs to operate.

“When we learned about this situation and that a solution was within reach, we immediately knew we had to help,” said Jaclyn Fulop, owner of Exchange Physical Therapy Group. “As a board member for Liberty Humane I was able to see what a profoundly positive impact the low cost spay/neuter program we launched last year had on the residents of Jersey City and Hoboken. We were able to save hundreds of animals lives by purchasing the spay/neuter truck and provided 1502 surgeries, our goal this year is to provide 2,000 surgeries for people in need.”

“I cannot emphasize enough how important this program is in moving our community forward and reducing the number of pets on the streets and in shelters ,” said Irene Borngraeber, Executive Director of Liberty Humane Society. “Of the 6.5 Million companion animals who enter shelters each year only 10% of them are spayed or neutered. That puts enormous stress on our shelter system. Jaclyn’s commitment to making affordable spay/neuter accessible to all moves us significantly closer to a time when every local companion animal has a home.”

For more information on the program please visit https://www.libertyhumane.org/. Eligible pet owners would pay $10 to spay or neuter their dog or cat.

“We are really excited to work with Liberty Humane Society on this project as we know that it can make an important and lasting impact not only for the animals, but the pet owners as well,” said Jaclyn Fulop. “After my dog Chloe passed this October I am going to continue to work hard and fundraise in her memory, as she was truly the inspiration behind this program.”

Liberty Humane in partnership with Exchange Physical Therapy Group will continue to raise funds for this program over the next year. Donations can be made here.
