Bryan O’Rourke, CEO of Vedere Ventures, a mergers and acquisitions advisory and investment firm focusing on the health club, fitness, and technology space, today announced the successful conclusion of an engagement involving the strategic sale of three award-winning Georgia based Gold’s Gyms to two different reputable strategic buyers. His expertise and experience were truly valuable to our team and we would highly recommend working with him.”

I am not surprised our long-time friend Gordon sought his insights and support.”

O’Rourke had this to say about the transaction and representation of Johnson and his health clubs, “It is a great honor to work with such reputable people. DuPont launches all-round ingredient solutions for plant-based innovation

With our solutions, food companies can produce delicious and safe foods that are good for health and the planet today. The focus is on making even better use of resources, improving access to nutrition and exciting consumer taste buds.

DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences has built a new plant-based solutions portfolio to help food producers meet the growing demand for healthier, more sustainable foods and beverages that are meat and dairy-free. The portfolio – a comprehensive launch pad for new product development – will be presented at Food Ingredients Europe 2019, where a selection of innovative plant-based concepts will give visitors a taste of the potential.

The global sales growth forecast for the plant-based sector is huge. As more consumers choose a flexitarian, vegetarian or vegan diet, Euromonitor estimates the market total value at USD 23 billion with growth rate close to 9%.

Innovation beyond meat and dairy alternatives

Among millennials, the desire for healthy and sustainable food solutions is also moving the market beyond plant-based alternatives that mimic meat or dairy. The rise of fermented products is a prime example of that. Through the fermentation of numerous vegetable bases, manufacturers can create exciting new tastes and textures.

“Using our plant-based solutions, food manufacturers can redefine existing products or create entirely new categories that give consumers a wider range of choices. If the plant-based movement is to have a long-term impact on health and sustainability, we need to provide more options so consumers can quickly identify their personal preferences and speed up change in their purchasing habits,” says Sonia Huppert, Global Marketing Leader for Plant-Based Health at DuPont.

A comprehensive portfolio – ready to sample

The DuPont plant-based solutions comprise a comprehensive portfolio of plant proteins, cultures, probiotics, enzymes and stabilizing solutions that deliver all-round nutritional and functional benefits.

At Food Ingredients Europe, visitors to the DuPont stand will be inspired by a range of tasty plant-based samples developed by a chef: flammable tacos, favourite ‘fish’ soup, croque mon père, vegetable protein on a mushroom landscape, iced caffe latte, and a creamy dessert with granola. All exclusively made with animal-free ingredients.

The plant-based opportunities link with the DuPont platforms for digestive health and clean label solutions, which the stand will also highlight.

Solving tomorrow’s challenges today

“We all talk about the need to secure the global food supply for the future. With our solutions, food companies can produce delicious and safe foods that are good for health and the planet today. The focus is on making even better use of resources, improving access to nutrition and exciting consumer taste buds,” says Huppert, with reference to the DuPont ‘Invent a Better N:OW’ campaign.

► The DuPont team invite visitors to join their tasting sessions at Food Ingredients Europe on 3-5 December 2019 in Paris. The sessions will be held each day at 11.30am and 2pm on the DuPont stand, number 6C90.

Technology platforms unite to offer a full-stack tech suite for health and fitness innovators

News Image

“We jumped at the opportunity to bring together a collective that, when combined, would allow any company to create a digital product designed to engage and retain their users, whether they’re in the studio or at home.” – asensei CEO Steven Webster

Today asensei, Feed.fm, Mux and WEEL announce the launch of a full suite of technology designed to offer a complete solution for digital fitness experience creators.

As more and more Connected Fitness products hit the market, the opportunity exists for a technology stack upon which companies can differentiate their products and decrease time to market. This partnership was forged to address that gap and combine key technical elements in one holistic package. With a simple plug-and-play solution that includes video streaming, music licensing and streaming, and body sensor technology, any company can harness the competitive edge they need.

The partnership includes:

asensei: asensei offers a Connected Coaching™ platform that understands human movement and movement coaching through patented (app)arel technology, which integrates motion capture and real-time coaching into sport clothing. This allows asensei to provide customers real-time feedback from world-class trainers and athletes on their form and technique as they practice their favorite sports or fitness activities on their preferred equipment. For apparel and equipment brands, Connected Coaching from asensei turns education into engagement, and ensures customers aren’t simply moving, but improving.

Feed.fm: Music is core the workout experience and is proven to drive improved outcomes for exercisers. Feed.fm’s platform makes it easy for brands to seamlessly harness the power of music to engage and empower their users. The company tackles three major challenges when it comes to integrating popular music in apps, on websites, or in physical spaces: music licensing and curation, white label technology integration, and real-time analytics.

Mux: Mux is an API-first video platform designed to make world-class video streaming and analytics possible for any development team. For a connected fitness product, it’s imperative to deliver a seamless video streaming experience for the viewer at home or on the go. Mux delivers this with its advanced encoding services and ability to distribute video across different bandwidths, form factors, and devices.

Weel:The world’s leader in the research, development and manufacturing of wearable electronics, WEEL’s electronics are core to the asensei Connected Coaching experience. Their tech makes it easy for apparel manufacturers to integrate motion capture sensors into their apparel, compatible with the asensei Kinetic Capture(TM) technology that enables real-time coaching and feedback. By partnering with WEEL, asensei is able to shorten the time to market for existing apparel brands to create smart apparel.

“At asensei, building products on our Connected Coaching platform has given us first-hand experience of all the technical challenges at play when developing a connected fitness experience that is absent the watchful eye of a trainer or coach,“ said asensei CEO, Steven Webster. “We jumped at the opportunity to bring together a collective that, when combined, would allow any company to create a digital product that doesn’t just meet the bar of existing Connected Fitness products, but raises the bar to include real-time coaching of correct form and technique.”

“Music is a key part of any workout – there’s a scientifically proven link between the right music and improved physical performance, but more importantly for health and fitness platforms there’s a direct improvement in retention and frequency of use when workouts have the right soundtrack,” said Lauren Pufpaf, COO of Feed.fm. “We couldn’t be more thrilled to be working with this group on combining all of the key elements that can help any health or fitness brand get the right technology and expertise to bring their platform into the homes of users even more quickly.”

“Offering crystal clear video, regardless of the device, brings an experience to life and can help any user feel that they’re right in the classroom with their favorite trainer or instructor, even if it’s the middle of the night,” said Eric Elia, Head of Strategic Accounts at Mux. “We’re passionate about helping platforms of all kinds find their audience through streaming video, and we’re so excited to be working with this group to help bring the visions of so many health and fitness brands to life, no matter where their user lives.”

“One of the challenges for wearable technology is that it requires a multitude of sensors that disappear into familiar and fashionable apparel and to do so at scale. The value-add of WEEL to the partnership is that we can have an apparel partner come to us to enable them to create “smart” apparel at scale that looks and feels like their own brand.” added Michael Corbett, GM of WEEL Technologies. “We are excited to work with this group to deliver an all-in-one tech solution for health and fitness platforms that delivers the best possible experience for their user, every day.”

The companies are available for briefings at the Digital Fitness and Active Brands Summit in Los Angeles, December 4-5 and CES in Las Vegas, January 7-9.

About asensei

The asensei experience is enabled through (app)arel, compression apparel infused with Kinetic Capture, allowing asensei to guide, monitor and correct your practice with real-time feedback. asensei is changing the way aspiring athletes practice sport and fitness, by letting them progress along their own path as they follow coaching programs from sporting heroes.

Loma Linda University Health study finds tobacco use and air pollution exposure increase odds of tuberculosis by far greater than 50%

Smoking is still very much an issue that contributes to tuberculosis, and that risk is compounded by air quality and life choices.

A study recently published by researchers in both Loma Linda and Laos PDR found that respiratory health and rates of tuberculosis in low-income communities may be severely impacted by controllable external factors. Tuberculosis (TB) — a curable and preventable disease — is now the world’s leading cause of death from an infectious agent, surpassing HIV and AIDS.

The study — published online by the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health — found that, in Laos PDR, for every additional source of exposure to air pollution, the odds of TB go up 47 %. Sources of air pollution considered included exposure to smoked tobacco, secondhand tobacco smoke, and smoke from indoor cooking fires, burning crop waste and burning trash outside.

This study explored what exposure to multiple sources of air pollution did to impact rates of TB. Researchers hope the findings will lead to the engagement of multiple sectors of the society beyond healthcare — including agencies working on tobacco control, environmental health, policy makers and civil groups — in promotion of respiratory health.

“We often see the same issues in lower income communities here in the US,” said Anne Berit Petersen, PhD, MPH, RN assistant professor for Loma Linda University School of Nursing and the study’s lead author. “If we look at these factors in terms of poverty, we’re seeing a lot more avoidable cases of tuberculosis in poorer communities. Often the places with the poorest air quality have the most impoverished people,” she said.

The study reported that more than half of the world’s TB cases in 2017 came from the Western Pacific region. In Laos, “the high rates of tobacco use and use of polluting biomass fuels for cooking (e.g., wood, charcoal, crop waste, dung) represent significant risk factors for TB,” the study stated.

Titled, “Smoked Tobacco, Air Pollution, and Tuberculosis in Lao PDR: Findings from a National Sample,” the study focused on a population in Laos PDR.

The study, which was funded by grants from the National Institute of Health, included data from more than 9,700 subjects from across Laos PDR, representing more than 2,800 households, and the findings suggest that the risk of poor respiratory health would be decreased greatly if air quality were improved. Petersen says these findings may compare to similar concerns in San Bernardino County and California.

“While the types of air pollution may vary, we’ve seen similar relationships here — people living in communities with poorer air quality, from, for example, traffic-related air pollution, also have higher rates of tuberculosis,” Petersen said. “Smoking is still very much an issue that contributes to tuberculosis, and that risk is compounded by air quality and life choices.”

We treat a wide range of clinical diagnoses affecting the back, neck, shoulder, elbow, wrist, hand, hip, knee, ankle, and foot. From injuries, sprains, and post-surgical rehabilitation, we focus on pain reduction, helping you reclaim your mobility and strength.

Our customized sports rehabilitation programs focus on functional activities and sport specific training. We also help with injury prevention, management, and education, stretching programs, and sport & team-specific conditioning and training.

  • Industrial Rehabilitation

The Apex Comprehensive Occupational Management and Prevention (ACOMP®) is a full-spectrum industrial strength program that addresses every aspect from prevention to injury resolution. Our facilities have warehouse environments, allowing for unlimited job simulations and work-specific tasks. We also offer Work Hardening, Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCEs), Ergonomics, Injury Causational Analysis, and Job-Site Analysis.

Manual Therapy is exactly what it sounds like: the application of a specific skilled treatment, manually performed by the therapist. This type of therapy helps increase range of motion, induces relaxation, helps control pain, and reduces swelling or mobility restrictions.

  • Vestibular Rehabilitation

Individuals having problems related to dizziness and balance will likely benefit from Balance Therapy. Treatments may involve manual therapy and exercise-based therapy to help improve the vestibular balance system, while other exercises may be needed to improve balance control and reduce the risk of falling.

During the screen, a licensed therapist will meet with you to discuss your condition and provide a brief assessment of your physical and functional abilities. The information collected will help provide insight into the best medical options for you.
