Loma Linda University Health study reveals lower rates of cancer and early death in Adventists

The findings…strongly suggest that these health advantages may be available to all Americans who choose similar diets, in addition to other well-known prudent lifestyle choices such as regular physical activity, avoiding smoking and care with body weight.

A recent Loma Linda University Health study found lower rates of premature death and cancer in Seventh-day Adventists, a Protestant denomination long known for health promotion, compared with individuals in the general U.S. population. Published early online in CANCER, a peer-reviewed journal of the American Cancer Society, the study also found similar results when limiting the analysis to Black Adventists and the Black general population.

Health behaviors promoted by the Seventh-day Adventist Church include not smoking, eating a plant-based diet, regular exercise and maintaining normal body weight. Previous research suggests that Seventh-day Adventists have lower risks of many cancers, heart disease, and diabetes, and in California, live longer than individuals in the general population. Results vary by cancer type, however, with little published data for Black individuals.

To provide additional insights, lead researcher, Gary Fraser, MBChB, PhD, and his colleagues compared death rates and cancer incidence between a national Seventh-day Adventist population and a representative sample of the U.S. population. Specifically, the researchers analyzed data from the nationally inclusive Adventist Health Study-2 and a U.S. Census population, and they adjusted for differences in education, location of residence, and past smoking habits so that these factors would not explain any of the results.

The team found significantly lower rates of death from any cause, as well as a lower incidence of all cancers combined in the Adventist population (by 33% and 30%, respectively), and lower incidence rates specifically for breast, colorectal, rectal, and lung cancer (by 30%, 16%, 50%, and 30%, respectively). Death rates and incidence of all cancers combined were also significantly lower among Black Adventist individuals compared with Black individuals in the U.S. Census population (by 36% and 22%, respectively).

“This is the first confirmation of previous reports, now using national populations. Further, we were able to control for differences in tobacco use by excluding any currently smoking non-Adventists, and adjusting for past smoking and time since quitting in previous smokers,” Fraser said. “In addition, this is the first report that includes a comparison among Black individuals alone.”

Fraser noted that the findings do not clearly identify the causes of the health benefits experienced by Adventists, but other studies have provided evidence that the plant-based dietary habits chosen by many Adventists are one important factor.

According to Fraser, Adventist vegetarians have less overweight, diabetes, hypertension, elevated blood cholesterol, coronary heart disease, and several cancers compared with Adventist non-vegetarians, who themselves are lower than usual consumers of animal foods.

“The findings in this report comparing all Adventists—vegetarians and non-vegetarians—to average Americans are largely as expected,” Fraser said, “and strongly suggest that these health advantages may be available to all Americans who choose similar diets, in addition to other well-known prudent lifestyle choices such as regular physical activity, avoiding smoking and care with body weight.”

RMA of Connecticut Announces Fertile Yoga Program Reduces Stress and Increases Hopefulness in Women Going Through Infertility Treatment

RMA of Connecticut team including Dr. Spencer Richlin present research at ASRM announcing Fertile Yoga program reduces stress and increases hopefulness in women going through infertility treatment.

RMA of Connecticut team including Dr. Spencer Richlin present research at ASRM meeting.

“Given that many patients stop infertility treatment prematurely due to stress and feelings of discouragement, the techniques used in our Fertile Yoga program could ultimately provide patients with the emotional energy and skills necessary to continue with fertility treatment.,” said Dr. Richlin.

Research conducted out of RMA of Connecticut, a leading fertility practice whose exceptional quality and care helps couples and individuals grow their family, shows that Fertile Yoga reduces stress and increases hopefulness in women undergoing fertility treatment. The study was authored by RMA of Connecticut staff members including Dr. Spencer Richlin, a partner and Surgical Director, Robin Mangieri, CEO, and Lisa Rosenthal, a registered yoga teacher and a patient advocate. The results of the study were presented at the ASRM conference in October.

The study included 55 women of various ages who were undergoing different types of fertility treatments and at various stages. The women were asked to complete a questionnaire before and after taking the Fertile Yoga class for a maximum of 4 months. The questionnaire included questions regarding stress, sadness and levels of hopefulness on a zero to 10 scale, where zero indicated no evidence of stress, sadness or hope and a 10 meant the highest level of stress, sadness, and hope.

Dr. Richlin says, “Given that many patients stop infertility treatment prematurely due to stress and feelings of discouragement, the techniques used in our Fertility Yoga program could ultimately provide patients with the emotional energy and skills necessary to continue with fertility treatment.”

Fertile Yoga is open to the public and is a free program for patients going through various stages of infertility treatment. Fertile Yoga combines two techniques, which include a one-minute mantra: “I am strong, healthy, resilient, hopeful, capable and fertile,” and seven movements of the spine, which include forwarding flexion, backbend extension, lateral left bend, and lateral right bend, left rotation twist, right rotation twist, and axial extension.

The researchers did not use a clinical diagnosis to determine scales of sadness, stress and hope but instead highlighted purposefully outcomes by the way the women felt. Their findings indicated a statistically significant decrease in stress and sadness and an improvement in overall hopefulness after taking the yoga class, in all age groups. The students reported that they were likely to continue to use the mantra and spine movements during their infertility journey.

Omega Announces Annual Nonprofit Retreat Grant Opportunity Aimed at Strengthening Social Impact

Nonprofits face immense challenges, from scarce resources, to regulations, to staffing. Typically the first thing to go, when trying to meet daily pressures, is dedicated time for planning.

Omega Institute, a nonprofit educational organization, today announced it is accepting applications from fellow nonprofits for its 16th annual Strengthening Communities Summit. The summit is part of a long-standing program, Nonprofit Retreats at Omega, which awards working retreat grants to organizations addressing social, economic, environmental, and cultural challenges in the Hudson Valley, and beyond. The application deadline for 2020 grants is January 27th.

“Nonprofits face immense challenges, from scarce resources, to regulations, to staffing. Typically the first thing to go, when trying to meet daily pressures, is dedicated time for planning,” said Carla Goldstein, president of Omega. “We are proud to be able to give back to our extended community by supporting the work of our nonprofit peers, many of whom provide a safety-net to the most vulnerable people among us.”

Omega partners with the New York Council of Nonprofits (NYCON) on this program, which since 2005 has served more than 5,000 people from close to 350 organizations. Grant recipients come for 3-day/2-night, self-led, working retreats and receive access to all amenities on Omega’s 250-acre Hudson Valley campus. Funding includes simple accommodations, meals, and a private meeting space. Past recipients have used their time at Omega in many ways, from strategic planning and cultivating leadership, to reflection, team-building, and problem solving.

While at Omega, organizations also participate in the Nonprofit Clinic, a free one-hour consultation with NYCON for support in any aspect of nonprofit health—from financial management to resource development, strategic planning, and board and leadership development. Additionally, summit participants can contract with NYCON for more robust retreat planning services and facilitation assistance.

Danielle Weisberg, director of child welfare services at Westchester Institute for Human Development, attests to the value of her agency participating in the summit program. “You really won’t find another experience like this. Between the bucolic setting, the warmth of the staff, and the indescribable energy that surrounds you, Omega is an ideal setting for nonprofits to step away from their daily responsibilities and transform a part of their organization and culture.”

The Nonprofit Retreats at Omega program is generously supported by the Dyson Foundation and Rose & Kiernan, Inc.

Maddyn Launches CBD Oil Wellness Line with Focus on Transparency and Education

Maddyn's premium CBD wellness line includes mint-flavored tincture, topical recovery cream, and capsules.

Maddyn’s new hemp-derived CBD wellness line includes mint-flavored tincture, topical recovery cream, and capsules.

Our Farm to Life standard…allows us to be completely transparent about how our products are made and what’s inside.

Jim Heidenreich and Rolf Sannes are believers in the potential benefits of CBD oil, especially when it comes to the daily recovery needs of active individuals like them. While they saw tremendous potential after the passing of the 2018 Farm Bill, which made hemp-derived CBD legal on the federal level, they also saw rapid growth in the category lead to “information overload” that quickly became a potential barrier for those new to CBD. This is what prompted Heidenreich and Sannes to create Maddyn, a new line of hemp-derived CBD oil products with a focus on transparency and education, now available exclusively online.

Maddyn offers high-quality plant-based ingredients in its product line, including organically grown hemp from Colorado, with all products independently tested to ensure quality and consistency. The new line includes the following products: Relax & Revitalize Full Spectrum CBD Oil Tincture flavored with natural mint; Renew & Recharge Broad Spectrum CBD Crème enhanced with arnica, cocoa butter, eucalyptus, and lavender; Relax & Revive Full Spectrum CBD Capsules with turmeric.

“We created Maddyn for those we call ‘Everyday Warriors’- people who are balancing work and life with the daily activities they love,” says Rolf Sannes, co-founder of Maddyn. “Our customers are seeking recovery for their mind and body to keep doing everything they love without compromise. Maddyn offers them safe and natural solutions they can trust to help with their daily recovery needs.”

While many new CBD brands are emerging with potentially confusing claims and product information, Maddyn focuses on complete transparency and education across all touch points. In addition to a complete listing of ingredients, each product package includes a QR code linked to current lab results on the website. The site will also be an educational resource for consumers, featuring a blog dedicated to CBD related content and other topics of interest such as wellness, exercise, and lifestyle.

“Our Farm to Life standard means we work directly with our U.S. farming partners to ensure we use the very best plant varietals and ingredients in all of our products, which are crafted in small batches to ensure quality and consistency,” says Jim Heidenreich, co-founder of Maddyn. “This allows us to be completely transparent about how our products are made and what’s inside, which will help customers feel at ease about adding CBD oil products to their daily routines.”

To help ignite a conversation around hemp-derived CBD oil products, Maddyn is inviting Instagram users to celebrate #HempDay every Wednesday during the month of December. To enter, participants must follow @MaddynLife on Instagram, “like” their weekly #HempDay-themed post, and comment on why they make hemp-derived CBD oil products part of their daily routines. One winner will be selected each week to receive a gift pack that includes Relax & Revitalize Full Spectrum 300 mg CBD Oil Tincture and Renew & Recharge Broad Spectrum CBD Crème (retail value of $129.98). The sweepstakes begins on Wednesday, December 4 and runs through Wednesday, December 25. For official sweepstakes rules and details, visit http://www.maddyn.com or follow @MaddynLife on Instagram.

Maddyn products are now available to purchase exclusively online at http://www.maddyn.com, with free shipping included on all orders and a 30-Day Money-Back Guarantee on first-time orders. As a bonus, customers can receive 35% off their first purchase for the holidays by subscribing to Maddyn’s e-newsletter now through December 31.

About Maddyn

Maddyn is a premium line of hemp CBD infused and plant-based protein products designed to enhance the lives of active individuals by providing natural and trusted solutions for their daily recovery needs. The company was founded in 2019 by Jim Heidenreich and Rolf Sannes – entrepreneurs who share a passion for fitness and enthusiasm for hemp CBD products. Maddyn launched its first products online in the fall of 2019, including hemp CBD infused tinctures, capsules, and recovery cream, with plans to expand into other products. Maddyn entered the marketplace during a time of significant growth in the hemp-derived CBD category, with many new brands emerging with potentially confusing information and product claims. The company’s core mission is to disrupt this status quo by offering higher quality plant-based products that are crafted specifically for recovery – and to bring these products to the public with unmatched education and transparency. With its Farm to Life standard of crafting products in small batches using only the highest performing ingredients, consumers will feel better using the product and can trust how they are made.
