Rex Gryphon’s Highly-Anticipated Rex Baron Survivors Kitchen/VRex Lounge Opens in South Florida

By creating and mastering the ReStory, a new category in hospitality, our REX posts offer a high quality, healthy and delicious menu with a storied, rustic, new world cross-generational atmosphere that engages and stimulates,”

Ready to excite, astound and surprise residents and visitors this holiday season, Rex Gryphon (RG) Restaurant Group has opened its newest REX (Restaurant, Entertainment, Xperience) destination: Rex Baron Survivors Kitchen/VRex Lounge at Town Center at Boca Raton. “Where the art of food meets the art of survival”, the “nothing like it” interactive, multi-sensory experiential destination meeting place, dining haven, watering hole and hi-tech virtual reality escape lounge is the second in Rex Gryphon’s network of casual, upscale “vigilante posts” set for national expansion.

Rex Baron is perfect for lunch, dinner and late-night dining as well as private celebrations, corporate events, and team building. The destination location is where ‘urbanites’ are encouraged to create and share their own experiences. The food and cocktails surprise, and visits to the hi-tech HD Sports Hangar or ‘Lamborghini-level’ 2,500-square-foot VRex Lounge (with 32 virtual reality and simulation stations) engages survivors (the guests) in “thrill and chill” seeking “bucket list” escapes. Survivor Sundays will feature a variety of programming, including live entertainment, car and motorcycle club meet-ups, fashion shows, art shows, nonprofit fundraisers and more.

Everyone Becomes Part of the New World Re-Story

The 8,500-square-foot avant-garde post-apocalyptic themed restaurant concept — where food, culture, community, interactive tech and art thrive — engages guests (aka survivors) with characters (aka vigilantes, the “good guys…and gals”) who together are building a peaceful, inclusive new world. As its sister outpost to Rex Gryphon’s Mad Rex in Philadelphia, the South Florida outpost is named for its own lead vigilante Rex Baron and features a collection of authentic fashion-infused vigilante persona art exhibits (clothed in post-apocalypse recovered remnants of Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Prada, John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Isaac Sellam and Carol Christian Poell couture) each with their personal stories.

Guests themselves become part of the South Florida post’s ReStory (Rex Gryphon’s term for restaurant story), as they dine and get to know more about Rex Baron and his 18 vigilante character personas (nine men and nine women) who each play an impactful role in the New World. Under Rex Baron’s leadership, the vigilantes are helping create a sanctuary for all survivors (including the animals) by protecting them against a lawless society while replenishing the earth, health and wellness in the New World. To help survivors spot and learn about each vigilante boasting “style so good it intimidates,” guests will be provided a pocket-size gallery guide as an app is currently under development.

“By creating and mastering the ReStory, a new category in hospitality, our REX posts offer a high quality, healthy and delicious menu with a storied, rustic, new world cross-generational atmosphere that engages and stimulates,” shared hospitality industry veteran Michael Norris who leads the development of Rex Gryphon’s vigilante posts. “By debuting this holiday season, there will be a lot more entertaining opportunity for South Florida residents, businesses and visitors from Miami to Stuart.”

Food Amongst the Art…and Conversation

Driven by Rex Gryphon Culinary Director Ralph P. Fernandez and Rex Baron Executive Chef MJ Smith, the Survivors (Scratch) Kitchen’s Modern American cuisine is based on classic world techniques with new and old-world flavors with a focus on high-quality locally-sourced ingredients; fresh vegetables and highest-grade organic meats, seafood, poultry and spice blends and “unusually served” themed cocktails.

Guests indulge in a Survivors Menu inspired by Mother Nature and the human instinct of eating well and spoiling palates. Seated at literally the “hottest tables” in town, diners can be their own chef, cooking at their table on a 600-million-year-old Pink Himalayan Salt Block heated to 350C or a Black Lava Rock heated to 650C. An in-house butcher brings out the finest steaks, seafood, poultry and gives guests tips on personal seasoning and block/rock cooking that offers many health benefits. To prepare their meals, those choosing the Hunters (Meat, Poultry, Seafood) Table cooked on the Black Lava Rock or Foragers (Vegetable) Table cooked on the Pink Himalayan Salt Block, select from three collections of signature gluten-free sauces: Vigilante (Meat), Outpost (Fish) and Grasslands (Vegan).

For the Adventurous to the Classic Food Lover…A Varied Menu for Every Preference

Executive Chef MJ Smith shares that there are plenty of vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options on the menu, with allergens noted by each dish. Starters include Fried Green Tomatoes, Steakhouse Chips, Cauliflower Bites, and Buffalo Chicken Dip. Featured salads include the REX Southwest Wedge, Ancient Grain and Grilled Caesar. Chef selections that wow include the Prime Rib Melt, Laporte Pan Seared Scallops and Southwestern Rigatoni. In addition, there Is the Rex Baron Burger, Survivor Vegan Burger and a Way Beyond Burger. Signature sides include Sherry Shallot Fingerling Potatoes, Crispy Smashed Potato and Smoked Gouda Mac & Cheese.

All of this can be topped off by Rex Baron’s choice of 16 signature cocktails, some emboldened with fire, others presented in post-apocalyptic barware or a few playfully “administered” in Camel Back “Survivor Bags” perched on rolling frames. The latter enables guests to move to and from the indoor sanctuary and outside terrace dining, the VREX Lounge, and the HD Sports Hangar. Among the most popular libations are Flame Thrower, The Vigilante, Tea-Rex, Gryphon, Ginslinger, Survivor Espresso and Salvation Sangria.

Begin or Finish Dining with a Virtual Reality “Bucket List” Escape

With Never Before 5k VR Encounters Available to the Public

When guests want to step out of their world and their day-to-day routine to replenish or invigorate, they can step into the VRex Lounge (with full-service bar) for their choice of Oculus, Valve Index and XTAL experiences. Venturing generations beyond the tech available at arcade-level experiences, the Rex Gryphon VRex Lounge advances this hospitality genre by featuring never before 5k virtual reality encounters available to the public. Rex Gryphon’s latest-generation VRex Lounge is the only public VR venue in the world offering the XTAL, the world’s first VR headset with AutoEye and embedded Leap Motion with 5k resolution. Exclusively outfitted for Rex Gryphon by VRgineers based in Prague, the VRex Lounge brings to the U.S. the company’s highest level patented technology Vrgineers develops solely to deliver the highest level simulations for corporate, medical, pilot and aviation trainings.

At the VR bar and the intimate VR Chamber located behind glass waterfalls, guests can take a walk in space, venture on a safari, leap from a plane, dive the oceans, walk with dinosaurs, swim with the turtles in the Galapagos, pilot a plane, hit the track in a high-performance race car, tour cities and countries, etc.

“We are excited to welcome Rex Gryphon’s newest Vigilante Post to Town Center at Boca Raton,” shared Town Center General Manager Sal Saldaña. “We are certain this vibrant, high-energy new dining and entertainment destination will become an instant favorite for our shoppers and visitors.”

Kyle Hayes, Who Saved His Wife and Unborn Child with CPR, Is Named Winner of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation’s People Saving People Award

Kyle and Jennifer Hayes and family

Kyle Hayes, winner of People Saving People Award, with Jennifer, Micah and Matthew

If not for Kyle, Micah and I would not be alive today. His quick actions in calling 911 and starting CPR not only saved one life, but two.

Kyle Hayes, of Eastvale, California, has been named winner of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation’s People Saving People Award for saving the lives of his wife, Jennifer, 34, and their unborn son with CPR. The announcement and award presentation took place at the Cardiac Arrest Survival Summit on December 13 in Seattle, WA.

It was November 9, 2017, and Jennifer Hayes, a pediatric nurse, was 30 weeks pregnant and enjoying a “perfect” pregnancy. That changed in an instant when she collapsed at home in sudden cardiac arrest. Kyle heard her fall and found her in their 3-year-old son’s room, face down, unresponsive, and having a seizure. He immediately called 911 and was instructed by the dispatcher to begin CPR. Moments later, remembering that his neighbor, Russ, a police officer, was trained in CPR, he ran across the street and pounded on the door. Not waiting for an answer, he rushed back and continued CPR. Russ soon followed and took over compressions until first responders arrived.

Five minutes after the 911 call was made, paramedics arrived. Jennifer received 15 minutes of CPR and two shocks with a defibrillator before her heart returned to a normal rhythm. She was taken to a local hospital, but due to her pregnancy, she was airlifted to a hospital with a specialized level of care.

It was determined that the likely cause of her cardiac arrest was eclampsia (when high blood pressure during pregnancy results in seizures). The cure was to deliver the baby. In the early morning of December 10, Micah was delivered by C-section, 10 weeks early. He was not breathing when he was born and weighed only 3.5 pounds. He was intubated and admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

Following her C-section, Jennifer was cooled with induced hypothermia for 24 hours. Four days after her cardiac arrest, she met her new son. Eight days after her cardiac arrest, she was discharged home with a wearable defibrillator and no neurological impairments other than short-term memory loss.

Micah remained in the NICU for 71 days, meeting every milestone along the way. On January 21, 2018, he was discharged home. Today, both Jennifer and Micah are doing well.

Mary Newman, president of the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, presented the award to Kyle. “Everyone is a winner when people nearby act quickly and decisively to help victims of sudden cardiac arrest,” she said. “And so, it was very difficult to select the winner of the 2019 People Saving People Award. But we felt that Kyle’s heroic actions exemplify the critical importance of immediate bystander intervention when sudden cardiac arrest occurs. And the fact that he saved two lives is clearly remarkable.”

In accepting the award, Kyle thanked Russ, the dispatcher, and all those who contributed to saving the lives of his wife and unborn son. He was then joined onstage by Jennifer, Matthew and Micah.

In addition to the award, Kyle received an automated external defibrillator (AED), donated by ZOLL, which the family will give to an organization in their community.

“If not for Kyle,” said Jennifer, who nominated him for the award, “I am confident that Micah and I would not be alive today, doing as well as we are. His quick actions in calling 911 and starting CPR not only saved one life, but two.”

About the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation

Diet ID Becomes Part of Reimbursable Workflow for Medical Nutrition Therapy Providers

This technology will revolutionize dietary assessment.

Diet ID™, a digital health toolkit that makes dietary assessment quick and easy, and facilitates dietary behavior change while saving time and reducing cost, is now established as a reimbursable part of medical nutrition therapy (MNT). Adoption of this powerful innovation can actually enhance the bottom line.

For Dr. John Gobble, DrPH, RDN, LD, FACLM, a provider for Lifestyle Medicine Group in Oregon and Washington, Diet ID has been successful in achieving a 100% reimbursement rate. “Dietary analysis takes up a major portion of my medical nutrition therapy (MNT) interview, a requirement for health plan reimbursement of procedure codes 97802, 97803, and S9740,” he says.

Because diet is the leading predictor of disease risk and all-cause mortality, diet assessment is a critical component of assessing health and overall risk. But traditional methods of diet assessment are time-consuming, tedious, and often inaccurate, all of which compromise outcomes. “The assessment needs to be time efficient and yet accurate enough to show change over time,” says Gobble. “The Diet ID assessment fits the bill. Not only does it take less time to complete than other methods, it also engages the client as we explore better eating habits using the dietary quality score provided by Diet ID.”

Diet ID helps patients succeed by providing quality health service solutions in a competitive marketplace. The tools help give practitioners time back to do what they do best — connect with patients. That’s because Diet provides a frictionless assessment that generates actionable insights in real time, and that flow can be reimbursed.

Dr. Gobble says, “This technology will revolutionize dietary assessment.”

Highmark Notifies Consumers of New ACA Enrollment Deadline Extension

“For individuals who don’t have access to health insurance through their employer or who don’t qualify for Medicaid, this extended deadline provides more time to take action and sign up for an ACA plan,” said Mark Nave, senior vice president of individual and small group products for Highmark.

Highmark is notifying eligible individuals that the time to shop for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has been extended, with the new deadline to enroll in coverage that begins on Jan. 1, 2020 coming at 3 AM EST on Wednesday, December 18, 2019.

“For individuals who don’t have access to health insurance through their employer or who don’t qualify for Medicaid, this extended deadline provides more time to take action and sign up for an ACA plan,” said Mark Nave, senior vice president of individual and small group products for Highmark.

“One of the largest benefits from the passing of the ACA was that it broadened access to health insurance for people who aren’t covered through their job, make too much for Medicaid or couldn’t get covered because they have pre-existing conditions,” he said.

“We encourage individuals in those situations to go to myhighmarkplans.com and shop for a plan that fits their needs before the new deadline of December 18,” Nave said. “It’s important to look not only at the monthly premiums, but to check the network of doctors and hospitals to make sure local, high-quality providers are in your network.”

For 2020, Highmark has introduced new products in western, central, and northeastern PA; lowered premiums; and expanded into new areas. Many plans feature $0 copays on the care members use the most, including two free PCP visits, two free mental health/substance abuse visits, and free telemedicine visits. Most ACA plans even include $0 copays for certain commonly used prescription medications.

Highmark has introduced a new ACA product called Together Blue. This new product offers residents of Allegheny, Washington and Erie Counties lower-cost access to Allegheny Health Network (AHN) doctors and hospitals. This new offering is in addition to Highmark’s other products which include broader access to community provider partners and, for some products, UPMC doctors. Highmark products offer access to UPMC Children’s Hospital.

“AHN is expanding and building new facilities across the region and focusing on bringing care out into the community,” Nave said. “This is bringing access to quality care to more and more locations and to more and more people.”

Together Blue includes plans that offer members free telemedicine services through AHN and American Well, $0 copays for all Tier 1 drugs, $0 copays for preventive vaccines as well as adult vision and dental coverage.

The Together Blue Care Advantage product also offers lower copays for specialist visits and drugs to help members with Congestive Heart Failure, COPD and diabetes better manage their conditions.

“The critical message for consumers as we approach the deadline is to go to http://www.healthcare.gov and shop for coverage that fits their budget and that offers access to the doctors and hospitals that they want. They can also shop directly with Highmark at myhighmarkplans.com,” Nave said. “The most important thing is to get covered.”

In addition, the GWI trumpets evidence-based wellness modalities through its dedicated Wellness Evidence website, making it easy for wellness professionals and wellness seekers alike to access extensive medical research and studies.

“I’m thrilled to welcome Renee and Michelle to the Institute’s Board of Directors. Their vast insights and unique backgrounds will inform many of the programs, initiatives and projects the GWI develops in its goal to positively impact global health and wellness,” said Susie Ellis, chairman and CEO of the Global Wellness Institute.

Moorefield and Floh increase the GWI’s board to 13 members, joining health and wellness-minded leaders such as Dr. Richard Carmona, chief of health innovation, Canyon Ranch and 17th surgeon general of the United States; Sue Harmsworth MBE, founder of ESPA International; and Mia Kyricos, SVP & global head of wellbeing, Hyatt Hotels Corporation.

Moorefield has been part of the GWI organization for years, chairing the successful Wellness at Work Initiative and helping to shape and guide the

The Wellness Moonshot: A World Free of Preventable Disease campaign. Moorefield is also the co-author of Driven by Wellth and is the CEO of Wisdom Works, which is dedicated to building thriving and resilient leaders worldwide. She has worked with thousands of people seeking to lead from inspired purpose and vision, wellbeing and internal balance.

“It’s an honor to be part of an organization that’s mission is to be a transformative platform that amplifies the principles and practices of wellness leadership across industries, geographies and sectors globally,” said Moorefield. “The GWI also shares my personal goal to make wellbeing a priority wherever we work, live and play.
