Piada Expands Menu to Include Keto, Paleo and High-Protein Options, Making it More Inclusive for all Guests

Keto BLT Salad

“These new additions to the menu make Piada more accessible to all Guests,” said Chris Doody, Piada founder.

Piada Italian Street Food welcomes everyone to its table with the debut of its new lifestyle menu items, including keto, paleo and high-protein options, which guests can order online only starting today at mypiada.com/order.

“These new additions to the menu make Piada more accessible to all Guests,” said Chris Doody, Piada founder. “Whether Guests have a restricted diet for health reasons or are just trying to establish different eating habits at the start of the new year, these new dishes open up the menu for everyone to enjoy something at Piada.”

By offering these new menu items online only for in-store pickup, Piada’s culinary team can ensure precise measuring and preparation of the food. This allows for accuracy in every dish, giving Guests exactly what they want.

The new lifestyle items include:

  • Keto BLT Salad – Roasted bruschetta tomatoes, whole milk mozzarella and four pieces of crispy pancetta crumbled onto a bed of chopped romaine, tossed in Piada’s signature house-made creamy parmesan dressing.
  • Paleo Berry Balsamic Salad – Creamy avocado and fresh sliced strawberries mixed with red cabbage and spinach tossed in their new berry balsamic dressing.
  • Protein Bowl – Piada’s all-natural white meat chicken is topped with whole milk mozzarella, house-made basil pesto and roasted bruschetta tomatoes, served aside roasted broccoli and sautéed zucchini and mushrooms. It’s packed with 50 grams of protein in each bowl!

Piada fans with restricted diets or specific dietary preferences understand and appreciate the importance of measuring and handling ingredients carefully when preparing paleo and keto dishes. To ensure the accuracy and safety of these new dishes, Piada works with MenuTrinfo®, a nationally recognized allergen and gluten-free company, to train their staff.

“Over the last few years, we took a step back from our growth agenda to refocus on our core values and getting it right for our Guests,” said Doody. “Maintaining the quality of our core menu items like our Piadas and signature pasta dishes will always be a priority, but we are constantly looking for ways to tweak and improve our menu so that all feel welcome.”

Later this month, Piada will introduce a revamped version of their gluten-free, vegetarian/vegan Power Bowl featuring roasted vegetables, avocado and pickled onions over a bed of warm quinoa.

Throughout the year, Piada plans to introduce additional items to its menu to fit a variety of lifestyles, so Guests should keep their eyes peeled for what’s coming next!

About Piada

The restaurant’s premium fast-casual concept, which offers Guests an array of healthy (and indulgent) options from a selection of more than 30 toppings, is centered around the Piada. Piadas are made up of a thin-crust dough, which is freshly baked on a stone grill and filled with a selection of Italian-inspired ingredients, then hand-rolled to perfection. Other signature menu items include Piada’s salads made with fresh ingredients and craveable pasta dishes made with their house-made sauces.

As a chef-driven concept, Piada’s food is cooked under classic culinary standards and emphasizes using ingredients that are fresh and of the highest quality. Recipes are inspired by traditional, simple Italian cooking techniques and highlight flavors like basil, rosemary and San Marzano tomatoes.

Piada was inspired by the roadside family-run street food carts and markets found in Rimini, Italy, and the company’s first restaurant opened in 2010. Headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, Piada has 40 locations throughout Ohio, Indiana and Michigan, Kentucky, Pennsylvania, Minnesota and Texas. For more information, visit MyPiada.com or follow Piada on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

Highmark Fights Opioid Stigma, Promotes Workplace Recovery with Shatterproof

Our collaboration with Shatterproof will help fight stigma so that opioid use disorder is viewed as a chronic disease, rather than a moral failing. –Highmark president Deb Rice-Johnson

Highmark announced that its employer-based members have access to new virtual education and advocacy tools that combat stigma associated with opioid use disorder (OUD) and promote recovery in the workplace. These new resources, which are a value-added service for Highmark group customers in Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia, are offered in collaboration with Shatterproof. Shatterproof is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to reversing the addiction crisis in the U.S.

“Across the communities that we serve, we found that stigma associated with opioid use disorder is widespread,” says Highmark president Deb Rice-Johnson. “And yet, despite that stigma, we found that people want to help someone who is struggling with opioid dependence. Our collaboration with Shatterproof will help fight stigma so that opioid use disorder is viewed as a chronic disease, rather than a moral failing. It will also equip workplaces and our members with the knowledge and resources to start a conversation about opioids and help those in need.”

Through Shatterproof, Highmark’s employer-based members can engage in brief, interactive education modules that explore the science of opioid use disorder; environmental and genetic risk factors; the dangers of opioids; signs, symptoms and evidence-based treatment options; ways to help individuals and families challenged by OUD; and success stories of individuals who are in recovery.

These modules, which take around five minutes each to complete, also provide supplemental videos, fact sheets and other evidence-based resources for those who want a deeper dive on each subject.

“As the opioid crisis has evolved, so has our response,” says Dr. Caesar DeLeo, vice president and executive medical director of strategic initiatives for Highmark. “We remain committed to helping the members and communities that we serve at all stages—from fighting stigma, to preventing dependence, to accessing treatment, to promoting long-term recovery that allows individuals to return to their family lives and the workforce.”

For more information, please visit: https://justfive.org/highmarkblueshield/

The collaboration with Shatterproof is a response to the results of a 2019 community survey that Highmark conducted in each of its core health insurance markets in Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia to better understand the public’s attitudes toward and experiences with opioid dependence. In each of Highmark’s core markets, more than 80 percent of survey respondents said that opioid dependence is mostly or somewhat the fault of the person. Additionally, more than three-quarters of respondents in all markets said that it is important for them to encourage friends, family members or acquaintances to seek care for opioid dependence.

Substance use disorders have wide-ranging consequences for employers, creating challenges related to decreased workplace safety and productivity, increased health care costs, absenteeism, turnover and a smaller pool of available talent. Substance use disorders have an estimated economic impact of more than $400 billion annually in the U.S., according to the National Safety Council (NSC). Large U.S. employers spent more than $2.5 billion annually in recent years on treatment for OUD and opioid overdoses. More than two-third of individuals with OUD are in the workforce, according to the NSC.

The collaboration with Shatterproof continues Highmark’s leadership in responding to the opioid crisis with a comprehensive approach that emphasizes primary prevention, safe prescribing and community supports.

Highmark has implemented a progressively intensive strategy to address the opioid crisis. The first component focuses on prevention by offering effective, non-pharmaceutical pain management therapies at the site of care. The second component of Highmark’s strategy emphasizes safe opioid utilization through new evidence-based medication policies, as well as ongoing monitoring and educational efforts for both members and prescribers. Highmark uses a data-driven approach to monitor members’ prescribing patterns and identify potentially unsafe use of opioids and other controlled substances. The third component centers on identifying members with opioid use disorder and linking them with high-quality, accessible treatment programs. Through these efforts, Highmark has reduced its members’ use and duration of use of opioids.

Throughout the past three years, Highmark and the Highmark Foundation have provided $3 million to community organizations and programs fighting the opioid epidemic in Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia. Recently, Highmark’s Financial Investigations and Provider Review Team was honored with the National Health Care Anti-Fraud Association’s Excellence in Public Awareness Award for its Opioid Epidemic Education Program. Through that program, more than 6,500 students, parents and educators in western PA have been empowered with knowledge and resources to respond to opioid dependence in their communities.

Healthier Generation & Kohl’s Kick Off New Decade on a Healthy Note

“Our goal is to offer great resources and simple solutions for families to make mealtime more nutritious and less stressful,” said Kathy Higgins, chief executive officer at the Alliance for a Healthier Generation.

Today, the Alliance for a Healthier Generation (Healthier Generation) and Kohl’s announced the launch of Eating Healthy at Home – a new campaign and suite of resources to help families take small steps to eat healthier on any budget. Starting today, families will have access to Eating Healthy at Home resources to help set healthy goals for the new year and create healthier habits that can last a lifetime.

Eating Healthy at Home is designed for busy parents and caregivers who want what is best for their families. Designed to relieve stress and boost family well-being, Eating Healthy at Home aims to ensure that the healthy choice is the easy choice for families. Resources, available at no cost at HealthierGeneration.org/eatinghealthyathome, include seasonal recipes, shopping guides, activities and more to encourage healthier eating when at home and at school. All resources are available both in English and in Spanish.

“On any given day, parents and caregivers are pressed for time and resources are needed to make sure that family meals are healthy meals,” said Kathy Higgins, chief executive officer at the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. “Our goal is to offer great resources and simple solutions for families to make mealtime more nutritious and less stressful.”

Data shows that youth with access to nutritious foods, regular physical activity opportunities and supportive environments for social-emotional health are more likely to see improved health and learning development. Eating Healthy at Home is just one component of the Kohl’s Healthy at Home family wellness initiative that encourages families to prioritize a healthy lifestyle in their homes and wherever their children live, learn and play.

In 2019, Kohl’s committed $2 million to Healthier Generation to launch Kohl’s Healthy at Home and provide families across the country with easy-to-use tools and resources that promote healthier lifestyles for children and youth. Kohl’s donation is made possible through the company’s philanthropic program, Kohl’s Cares, which sells children’s books and toys and donates 100 percent of the net profit from the sale of these items to support the health and wellness of families in our communities.

New and updated resources for nutrition, physical activity and social-emotional health are scheduled to be announced in late 2020 and throughout 2021 on kohlshealthyathome.org. To learn more and access Eating Healthy at Home resources, visit HealthierGeneration.org/eatinghealthyathome.

AltMed Florida Opens its Newest MÜV™ Medical Cannabis Dispensary in Downtown Orlando Saturday, Jan. 4

AltMed Florida Dispensary Design

We’re excited that our new downtown location is near Amway Arena and Orlando’s Church Street Station entertainment district and that we’re part of the revitalization in the area.

AltMed Florida, one of the fastest growing Medical Marijuana Treatment Centers (MMTC) in Florida (source: OMMU), has announced the grand opening of its newest MÜV™ Medical Cannabis Dispensary at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 4, 2020 at 101 S. Garland Ave., Suite 110 in Orlando.

We’re excited that our new downtown location is near Amway Arena and Orlando’s Church Street Station entertainment district and that we’re part of the revitalization in the area,” said AltMed Marketing Director Todd Beckwith. “In addition to serving patients coming into town to enjoy the nightlife and daily commuters, nearby residents can also enjoy this state-of-the-art MÜV Dispensary.”

The downtown location is the second AltMed Florida has opened in the Orlando area – previously opening a MÜV Medical Cannabis Dispensary last May at 1090 S. State Rd. 434 in Longwood, Florida – the company’s first to feature a drive-thru window.

The Orlando MÜV Dispensary will offer an extensive selection of award-winning products including flower, pre-rolls, a wide range of vaporizer pens, metered dose inhalers, topicals, oral sprays, patent-pending encapsulation formulations in its Tinctures, 72-Hour Transdermal patches and transdermal gels. MÜV is also recognized for having one of the widest selections of concentrates for patients needing macro-dosing options.

“Our dispensaries set the standard for quality products, service and overall patient experience at our current locations and we’re excited to offer our premium MÜV medical cannabis brand to even more people as we expand our presence across central Florida…especially along the Interstate 4 Corridor,” said AltMed Florida CEO John Tipton. “Our MÜV dispensaries are unlike anything in the state and we’re excited to invite licensed patients throughout Orange County and the surrounding areas to visit our newest state-of-the-art location in downtown Orlando.”

Like AltMed Florida’s 11 other locations (Apollo Beach, Clearwater, Fort Myers, Gainesville, Jacksonville/San Marco, Jacksonville Beach, Lakeland, Longwood, Sarasota, Tampa and Wellington/West Palm), the new downtown Orlando MÜV Dispensary stands out from others because it’s designed as a premium experience. Think Apple store, with a modern, open-concept design and expert staff with extensive training.

During the grand opening, all licensed Florida medical cannabis patients will receive 25 percent off their entire first purchase and the first 100 patients will receive a MÜV SWAG bag with their purchase. Patients can also order online at MÜVFL.com for express pickup or delivery.

The MÜV brand already has a wide following in other legal medical cannabis markets, including Arizona, where it has won five Best of Arizona medical cannabis awards. MÜV products are sold exclusively in Florida at MÜV dispensaries because, unlike other states, Florida does not allow wholesale of product between license holders – only products that license holders make themselves can be sold in their dispensaries.

For more information about the new ADA-compliant MÜV Medical Cannabis Dispensary in downtown Orlando, including hours and available MÜV products, visit MÜVFL.com.

AltMed Florida is on pace to open 40 MÜV Medical Cannabis Dispensaries across the state, all supplied by its 200,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art cultivation facility. Visit this link for images of AltMed Florida’s cultivation operations and watch this brief video to see what makes AltMed Florida and its MÜV™ Medical Cannabis Dispensaries stand out.

100 YEARS OF YOGA IN THE WEST — Self-Realization Fellowship Celebrates Centennial Anniversary — Founded in 1920 by Paramahansa Yogananda

What Paramahansa Yogananda brought to the West,” says SRF President Brother Chidananda, “is perhaps one of the greatest gifts to humankind – India’s ancient science of Yoga, the science of knowing the Self.”

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the arrival in the West of Paramahansa Yogananda – regarded as the father of Yoga in the West, whose best-selling classic, Autobiography of a Yogi, continues to be the definitive introduction to yoga meditation for millions of seekers around the globe.

The year also marks the centennial anniversary of Self-Realization Fellowship (SRF), the international society he founded to disseminate his yoga meditation teachings and to foster bonds of cultural and spiritual understanding between East and West.

“What Paramahansa Yogananda brought to the West,” says SRF President Brother Chidananda, “is perhaps one of the greatest gifts to humankind – India’s ancient science of Yoga, the science of knowing the Self, of realizing and experiencing who we truly are, divine souls with unlimited potential.”

A number of commemorative events are being planned in more than 600 venues worldwide for this milestone anniversary, including: a livestreamed inaugural ceremony on January 5 (the birth anniversary of Yogananda); special Centennial Open Houses featuring guided meditations and kirtans (devotional chanting) in mid-January; International Day of Yoga events in June, public lecture programs on the teachings of Yogananda presented by SRF monastics, scheduled for the spring and fall; a centennial-themed World Convocation in July, and a Centennial Commemoration Weekend in September to mark the actual date of Sri Yogananda’s arrival in America on September 19, 1920. Details of the events can be found at https://yogananda.org/srfcentennial.

Background of Paramahansa Yogananda’s Work in the West

Paramahansa Yogananda arrived in America from his native India on September 19, 1920 to serve as India’s delegate to an International Congress of Religious Liberals convening in Boston. His maiden speech, on the science of religion, would later be described by the Congress organizers as “forcible” and “impressive.” His subsequent talks on the universality of religion and the efficacy of yoga meditation would receive media coverage in all the major newspapers in the U.S. and draw thousands of seekers who filled the nation’s largest auditoriums to capacity to hear him speak.

He founded Self-Realization Fellowship the same year as his arrival to introduce to people of all races, cultures, and creeds the ancient science and philosophy of Yoga, that through practice of universally applicable methods of meditation they might realize and express more fully in their lives the true divinity of the human spirit.

During his more than 30 years in the U.S., Yogananda made America his adopted home and sought to bring unity to the world through his focus on the science and universality of religion, and to teach the 5,000-year tradition of yoga philosophy and its techniques of meditation. His pioneering efforts – including his numerous lectures, writings and the many temples and centers he established – have profoundly contributed to the ever-increasing interest in yoga and meditation today, with more than 36 million practitioners of yoga in the U.S. and 18 million people who regularly meditate.

His internationally acclaimed life story, Autobiography of a Yogi, remains one of the most widely regarded spiritual classics, influencing a diverse range of luminaries, from Nobel Laureate Thomas Mann to opera star Amelita Galli-Curci to Beatle George Harrison to Apple Founder Steve Jobs (who left instructions for all those attending his memorial service to be gifted with a copy of Yogananda’s book). Among the many other works by Paramahansa Yogananda are the highly acclaimed commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita, God Talks With Arjuna, and the four Gospels, The Second Coming of Christ: The Resurrection of the Christ Within You; and the three-volume series of Collected Talks and Essays on Realizing God in Daily Life.

From its humble beginnings in Boston, SRF, along with its sister organization Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (which Yogananda founded three years earlier in 1917), has grown over the course of its 100-year history to include more than 800 temples, ashrams, retreats, and meditation centers in more than 60 countries around the globe.

Today, the society, under the direction of its president, Brother Chidananda, publishes Yogananda’s writings, lectures, and informal talks (including the Self-Realization Fellowship Lessons), Self-Realization magazine, and other publications related to his teachings; conducts worldwide lecture tours, retreats, and youth programs; and oversees the SRF Worldwide Prayer Circle, whose members around the world pray for the well-being of individuals and world peace. An annual World Convocation is held each summer in Los Angeles, attracting upwards of 4,000 participants each year. In addition, SRF/YSS annually contributes to many local, national, and international charitable causes.

The Government of India has paid tribute to the life and work of Paramahansa Yogananda on three occasions, most recently in October of 2019 when it issued a special commemorative coin to commemorate Yogananda’s 125th birth anniversary, https://yogananda.org/blog/indias-finance-minister-releases-coin-commemorating-paramahansa-yogananda.

More information about the life and teachings of Paramahansa Yogananda and Self-Realization Fellowship may be obtained from Self-Realization Fellowship international headquarters: 3880 San Rafael Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90065-3298; (323) 225-2471; https://yogananda.org.

A Growing Public Heath Movement That Can Save Thousands of Lives Each Year

Call-Push-Shock logo

Call-Push-Shock social media campaign

By using consistent messaging about sudden cardiac arrest, we can save thousands of lives each year.”

Call-Push-Shock, a social media campaign designed to encourage bystander action in cases of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, is becoming a national public health movement. Results of the initiative, co-sponsored by Parent Heart Watch and the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation and grounded in research by global consumer research firm, StrataVerve, were presented at the Cardiac Arrest Survival Summit in Seattle earlier this month.

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a national public health crisis. About 1,000 people suffer SCA outside hospital settings every day in the U.S. On average, only in one in 10 victims survives. Those who survive invariably received immediate CPR and quick treatment with a defibrillator.

The Call-Push-Shock initiative was developed in response to an appeal from the Institute of Medicine (IOM), now the National Academy of Medicine, urging collaboration among stakeholders to help improve survival from sudden cardiac arrest. The purpose of the campaign is to motivate bystanders to call 911, give CPR, and use AEDs (automated external defibrillators) to help save lives threatened by sudden cardiac arrest. One of the ways to help improve survival, according to the IOM, is for organizations to speak in one voice with consistent messaging aimed at increasing rates of bystander intervention with CPR and use of AEDs.

The Call-Push-Shock campaign is grounded in research conducted for the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation by global consumer research firm, StrataVerve,

focused on public awareness, understanding, and messaging that resonates with laypersons. “We found that when consumer research is evaluated in comparison with data from CARES (the Cardiac Arrest Registry to Enhance Survival), about 14% more lives could be saved each year if bystanders intervened right away,” said Jennifer Chap, principal at StrataVerve.

The following definition was tested among consumers and is recommended for all to use: “Sudden cardiac arrest is a life-threatening emergency that occurs when the heart suddenly stops beating. It strikes people of all ages who may seem to be healthy, even children and teens. When SCA happens, the person collapses and doesn’t respond or breathe normally. They may gasp or shake as if having a seizure. SCA leads to death in minutes if the person doesn’t get help right away. Survival depends on people nearby calling 911, starting CPR, and using an AED (if available) as soon as possible.”

The campaign was launched in June 2018. Assets include a landing page, Call-Push-Shock.org, and a user-friendly toolkit that features a simple explanation of SCA tested among laypersons, an infographic, images created for Facebook and Twitter, videos of “man-in-the street” interviews, and a social media calendar with suggested posts. Assets are available in English and Spanish.

By October 2018, there were 20 co-partners. By early December 2019, there were 35 co-partners. By the end of December, another 15 organizations had expressed interest in joining the campaign.

“We are thrilled that so many stakeholders are joining the Call-Push-Shock movement,” said Mary Newman, Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation president. “We believe that if we speak in one voice across all of our platforms, we can dramatically improve survival from sudden cardiac arrest.”

Martha Lopez-Anderson, Parent Heart Watch executive director, agrees. “We welcome other organizations to join the Call-Push-Shock movement. By using consistent messaging about sudden cardiac arrest, we can save thousands of lives each year.”
