Natreon receives a US Patent on a plant-based Terminalia chebula extract

Natreon, a nutritional ingredient company, is proud to announce the grant of a U.S. Patent (US 10,500,240) on Terminalia chebula. This newly granted patent expands Natreon’s strong patent portfolio to a total of 24 active patents, as well as 40 published clinical trials.

The primary claim in this patent is, “a method of treating osteoarthritis in a mammal, comprising administering to a mammal in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising a Terminalia chebula extract comprising a hydrolyzable tannoid blend, said blend comprising about 8-25% by weight chebulagic acid based on the total weight of the extract and about 15-30% by weight chebulinic acid based on the total weight of the extract.” The secondary claim is “a method of reducing pain and inflammation in an individual with osteoarthritis in need thereof, comprising orally administering to the individual in need thereof a therapeutically effective amount of a composition comprising a Terminalia chebula extract comprising a hydrolyzable tannoid blend, said blend comprising about 8-25% by weight chebulagic acid based on the total weight of the extract and about 15-30% by weight chebulinic acid based on the total weight of the extract.” The published randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical study tested 100 subjects with joint discomfort. Based on the information from which this patent has been issued, the results have shown a significant reduction in WOMAC, KSI, and VAS scores for pain and stiffness.

Omega Women’s Leadership Center Names New Director Abby Graf Subak


At a time when growing women’s leadership is so vital to creating a climate for positive change, we are thrilled about the skills and excellence Abby will bring to the OWLC, and our shared commitment to advancing women’s voices and impact.

The Omega Women’s Leadership Center (OWLC) has selected Abby Graf Subak to be its new director. Graf Subak has devoted her career to developing progressive nonprofit organizations, including working with such esteemed nonprofits as 92nd Street Y, Idealist.org, and Arts Gowanus (Brooklyn, NY). She brings to the OWLC extensive experience in community building, program development and implementation, strategic planning, fundraising, training, and organizational development.

At Arts Gowanus, Graf Subak transformed the organization from a 1-event, 3-volunteer operation into a major presence for artists and community members with year-round programming, more than 25 active volunteers, and thriving fundraising. While the director of organizing at Idealist.org, her accomplishments included launching a global initiative of people acting on their good intentions and making a difference in their communities. As a consultant for the 92nd Street Y in Manhattan, she developed programs to engage global constituencies in women’s leadership initiatives. As a consultant for the #GivingTuesday philanthropic campaign, she ran a project funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to collect and share everyday people’s stories of generosity, with the goal of inspiring others to also give back. Earlier Graf Subak worked at Public Conversations Project, an Omega partner, and she has served on several community service boards. She is the mother of two teenagers.

“I feel incredibly honored to join Omega and the OWLC team at such an important time in history for women to be stepping up into positions of leadership,” said Graf Subak. “I have long admired Omega’s nonprofit work, and the substantial impact the OWLC has had on countless women around the world,” concluded Graf Subak.

South Carolina Promotes Play and Recreation Statewide Funding and Training Initiative


South Carolina Recreation and Park Association (SCRPA), PlayCore, GameTime, and Cunningham Recreation are aligning resources and strategically partnering to promote best practices in parks and recreation, provide quality education, and arm communities with evidence-based resources.

Parks are essential to creating healthier, happier societies across generations. Complimentary professional development events hosted by PlayCore’s Center for Outreach, Research & Education (CORE) will be held starting March 24-26 at three locations across South Carolina. These interactive education symposiums will help participants effectively fuel their community’s passion for play and recreation and empower stakeholders to become champions for high quality outdoor play and recreation environments that meet the diverse needs of children, families, and communities in these modern times.

Attendees will be inspired by unique design and program innovations, leadership case examples, and strategies to creatively consider the needs and goals of their community. The content and hands-on learning activities will equip participants in developing strong advocacy messages of how investing in parks and recreation positively impacts the quality of life in communities across South Carolina.

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop advocacy messages describing why play and recreation is essential to a healthier and happier society.
  • Apply research-based design best practices to create high-quality outdoor play and recreation destinations.
  • Discuss model projects, positive community outcomes, and the health and wellness benefits of inclusion, physical activity, and nature.


While CORE provides statewide professional development services, GameTime, a leading playground designer/manufacturer, will provide up to $2M million in matching funds to assist parks and recreation departments who are members of SCRPA create play and recreation destinations. These sites will be thoroughly reviewed to align with research-based best practices. These projects will serve as National Demonstration Sites (NDS) and as national models for promoting physical activity, fitness, nature engagement, and/or inclusion, and opportunities to participate in data collection and demonstrate community outcomes through an on-site sign with a research QR code.

Each of the four symposiums are designed for mid to upper-level professionals in the fields of park and recreation, landscape architecture, and education. The sessions will offer Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for professionals and promise to be lively, informative, and educational. Lunch and educational resources will be provided by GameTime and Cunningham Recreation.

The DuPont™ Sorona® brand team is challenging designers to think about the full lifecycle of a garment by showcasing a ski jacket where every layer is a spandex-free stretch solution that can be recycled. The ski jacket – using partially bio-based Sorona® fabrics for the inner and outer layers, the insulation, and the faux fur trim – is debuting exclusively at the upcoming Outdoor Retailer Snow Show on Jan. 29-31, 2020 in Denver, Colo., and at ISPO Munich, Jan. 26-29, 2020.

Combining the long-lasting performance of Sorona® fabrics with the concept of circular economy, this jacket is compatible with single stream polyester recycling, meaning the fabrics can have a second life when it’s time to finally retire the garment. Designed by Youngone, this stylish jacket incorporates the recently launched ECOLoft™ FLEX SR insulation based on UNIFI REPREVE® fibers and bio-based Sorona® polymer fibers offering warmth and long-lasting stretch for hitting the slopes time and time again.

Spotify Reveals Top Work-Out Trends and 2020 Predictions to Help Kick-Start Resolutions


The New Year is here and updating workout and self-care routines is likely top of mind. With more than 54 million workout-focused playlists on Spotify, Trends Expert Shanon Cook recently teamed with YourUpdateTV to take a closer look at trends and to share their 2020 fitness and wellness predictions based on current global listening.

Some key highlights from the data:


  • The Most Popular Workout and Wellness type: Listeners have created more running playlists than any other workout type. (Shoutout to Denmark where we see running playlists created at the highest rate!) Yoga follows in popularity, and Sweden might be the world’s most zen nation based on the high number of meditation and yoga playlists Spotify listeners have created. In fact, Swedish listeners create these playlists at a 521% rate higher than listeners in other countries.
  • 2020 Predictions: Focusing on self-care will continue to reign supreme in 2020. Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next”, Lizzo’s “Good as Hell” and Hailee Steinfeld’s “Love Myself” are popular female empowerment anthems on people’s “self-care” playlists. And we saw a 113% increase in streams of meditation playlists in the past year, higher than for any other workout and wellness type. We also saw an increase in streams of pilates (71%) and weight-training playlists (66%),and predict these will all continue to grow in popularity in 2020.
  • Working on Our ZZZzzz’s: Listening to Health & Fitness podcasts increased 145% in the past year. And listeners are falling in love with sleep podcasts. The most popular podcast in the health & fitness category at the moment is Sleepy, where host Otis Gray reads classic stories to help listeners doze off. Sweet dreams!
  • So what songs do listeners sweat to? Eminem’s “’Till I Collapse” is the most-streamed track in workout playlists at the moment. Ed Sheeran’s “I Don’t Care” with Justin Bieber is the second most-streamed workout song, followed by “Dance Monkey” by Tones and I, “If I Can’t Have You” by Shawn Mendes and “Beautiful People” by Ed Sheeran and Khalid.
