Coppermine and Blue Ocean Complete Renovation of 55,000 Square Foot Racquet and Fitness Facility at the Pikesville DoubleTree Hilton

This Pikesville location enhances Coppermine’s ability to serve the community and bring exceptional fitness and racquets programming for all ages.

Coppermine Racquet & Fitness, in partnership with Blue Ocean, recently completed a major renovation of their Pikesville facility. The project was expansive and included the construction of a new fitness area, locker rooms, restrooms, showers, lounge area, group fitness studio, and yoga studio.

Like many other fitness- and sports-oriented businesses, at the onset of COVID-19 in March, Coppermine and Blue Ocean were forced to temporarily close the Pikesville location. Determined to enhance the member and guest experience in the future, the partnership moved forward with the comprehensive renovation during this period. After three months of work, the project is complete and ready to welcome its members back.

According to Coppermine’s Regional Manager Sean Rehak, the renovated facility features state-of-the-art cardio equipment not typically found in health clubs. Treadmills are equipped with Preva®, onboard software app by PreCor™ that delivers a personalized fitness experience that tracks workout duration, distance, intensity, and calorie burn. The interactive utility also allows users to log into their own web and entertainment apps, including On Demand channels featuring their own choices in music, video, comedy, news, and sports.

Only every other piece of equipment is available for use, so distancing happens naturally. And currently, we are offering our classes at 25–50% capacity.”

Home Instead Senior Care Announces 2020 CAREGiver℠ of the Year

Maria “Dani” Frank of Whitehall, Pennsylvania., is the 2020 Home Instead Senior Care North American CAREGiver℠ of the Year. For Home Instead, the world’s leading provider of in-home care for older adults, there is no bigger accolade for the organization’s more than 65,000 professional CAREGivers℠.

“She is the CAREGiver everyone wishes to have,” explains Kimberly Koze D’Amico, owner of the Home Instead Senior Care office serving Allentown and Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.

Ms. Frank, who immigrated to the U.S. in 1974 from Portugal with only the belongings her family could fit in their suitcases and $500 in their pockets, has spent her life in consideration of others. In addition to 20 years with Home Instead, she has worked at her local hospital, returned to Portugal to care for her ailing parents and extended family, and even cared for own husband until he passed of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2013.

“When I have a client, I always put myself in their place,” describes Ms. Frank. “I take care of them the way I want to be taken care of or the way I’ve cared for my family. Everything I’ve gone through in my life – losing mom and dad, losing my husband – this job gives me strength to keep going and lets me know that life is truly worth living.”

That inspiring, selfless spirit is not lost on the estimated 100-plus clients Ms. Frank has cared for in her tenure as a Home Instead CAREGiver, especially one of her most recent and beloved clients, Mae. Shortly before she passed, Mae shared in her own words what Ms. Frank meant to her when Mae nominated her for this very award.

“I knew right away when I met Maria that she was going to help me. Now I wait at the window, watching for her to come in the evening. I don’t ever worry because I know Maria will always be here. When my angel Maria comes floating in the front door, I know everything will be alright…I’m tired more these days and I’m having a harder time with everything. I don’t want to go to the hospital anymore. Whatever happens to me in the end, I wish I could take Maria with me. I hope she will just stay with me and take care of me. She tells me she will always be here with me. I feel better when Maria is with me and I know with her here, I will be able to stay at home until the end. She helps me to not feel so afraid.”

Ms. Frank spent Mae’s final hours with her. And keeps Mae’s words from her nomination with her as a treasured gift.

“They developed a pretty close personal relationship,” recalls Mark, Mae’s son. “To my mom’s understanding, Maria was Home Instead.”

For Home Instead, today marked the first time since the award’s inception in 1997 that the highly anticipated announcement of its recipient was made virtually.

5 Ways to Protect Yourself from the Heat


While summer is usually a time for gathering with loved ones, this year, things are looking a little different. Even so, older adults are still finding ways to enjoy the outdoors – whether walking around the block, hosting a socially-distanced backyard barbecue or tending to the garden. Though time outside can improve mental and physical well-being, it’s especially important for seniors to be mindful of the season’s heat and humidity.

Extended exposure to the sun poses a risk for any age, and older adults can be particularly sensitive. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 36% of heat-related deaths in the U.S. were attributed to individuals over 65. There are a variety of reasons for this. The physical changes and various medical conditions associated with aging can make it more difficult to notice when they feel hot, to sweat effectively or circulate blood properly.

“After many months spent indoors, many are ready to get out and enjoy some fresh air and sunshine,” said Lakelyn Hogan, gerontologist and caregiver advocate at Home Instead Senior Care. “While spending time outside is a seasonal perk that we should all take advantage of, it’s important for seniors to be mindful of the heat and take proper safety precautions to avoid dehydration, exhaustion and other more serious side effects.”

When temperatures start to climb above 90 degrees, people should be wary of the potential implications of extreme heat and take preventative measures to safeguard themselves from heat-related illnesses and health risks. To help prepare, Hogan recommends the following tips to enjoy warmer weather while staying safe:

  • Stay hydrated. Dehydration is a common risk for many aging adults, especially in the hotter months. While the Mayo Clinic recommends drinking at least eight glasses of water a day, seniors may need more to offset medications or conditions that make them more predisposed to dehydration. It’s best to consult with a doctor about the correct amount before making any significant changes.
  • Fuel your body. Not all water intake needs to come from a glass. When it’s hot and humid outside, swap heavier meals with lighter options that feature lots of fruits and vegetables. Foods like cucumbers, tomatoes and strawberries are not only nutritious – they contain large amounts of water and can curb feelings of fatigue throughout the day.
  • Plan accordingly. Before you set out on your next outdoor adventure, review your local forecast for extreme heat alerts. When temperatures are high, stay indoors, or consider early morning or dusk when its coolest to enjoy open-air activities. If you or a loved one are outside and begin to feel unwell, stop and find a shady spot near trees or water to rest.
  • Dress to impress. Stay cool and fashionable this summer by accessorizing with items that help beat the heat. Pair loose-fitting, light colored clothing with sunglasses and a hat. And, don’t forget to protect yourself by applying sunscreen of 15 SPF or higher, at least 30 minutes prior to going outside. Reapply as directed.
  • Stay informed. With temperatures rising, it’s important to take notice of warning signs and know the right way to respond. If you or a loved one are experiencing symptoms of heat stroke or exhaustion, such as nausea, headache, dizziness or confusion, call 911 immediately for medical assistance.

When the appropriate precautions are taken, summer can be fun for all, and outdoor activities can be a safe way for older adults to connect with loved ones while keeping social distance in mind. But your safety should always come first. If it’s too hot, consider keeping yourself busy with fun, solo indoor activities, such as maintaining a potted garden inside, starting a scrapbook or watching a classic summer film.
